I have done the one-year fast from buying clothes. What helped me adhere to my fast was realizing that there will always be something that I want. In fact, there is something that I always want, which means that if I don't buy an item now, I'll always find something later. This worked during the fast (there'll be plenty to like next year) and still works for me now.

How do you do 1year? I keep setting a goal of no shop 2 weeks and I fail within 1 week each time.

    • @scholasticacooney6830
      @scholasticacooney6830 3 года назад +2

@@MrsOZ-nj5ty Here's what helped me: if you subscribe to retailers for deals emails, then unsubscribe. That, for me, was the biggest help in not being tempted. That may have been mentioned in the video - I don't recall, it's been years since I've watched it. As for paper catalogs, I'd leaf thru them and turn the pages down of what I liked, let the catalog sit for a week, and then pitch it w/o looking thru it again - b/c I couldn't remember what I wanted in there, anyway. Or, if it's easier for you, just pitch the catalog as soon as you get it. I am not a shopoholic in the first place, so these practices were not too difficult for me. Since it seems that perhaps you are a shopoholic based on your comment (and my apologies if I interpreted that incorrectly), I'd say for you, since reaching the goal is difficult for even one week, you need to take it one day at a time. Tell yourself "I am not going to buy anything today" and try to stick to that goal. Just take it one day at a time. Also, don't visit the web sites that provide temptation. Oh, and one last suggestion, which you've probably seen before: if you spy something you'd like, wait a couple of days before deciding to purchase; if the thought of the item has not been percolating in those two days, then you don't need and you don't really want it. Good luck!

Dear Audrey, Your video could not have spoken to me more powerfully. Thank you for your insight, wisdom and ability to communicate this truth.
My "no buy" spree began when I planned to move. Looking at all the stuff I had was sobering. Ultimately, I asked myself "If your house was on fire, what would you take with you?" Asking this question, although harsh, did reveal to me what truly matters (clothing or otherwise).
I have since sold or donated items that never brought me a spark of joy (visual or physical).
This has been therapeutic. It was my way of helping my home "lose weight" and refocus on the FEW items that I truly loved.
You are a joy to watch, listen and learn from.
Please continue to teach us your gentle wisdom.

Plus, I had already carefully edited and organized my fall/winter/holiday wardrobe ( thanks to some of your tips). I saved what I loved, consigned and earned $950, and donated what didn't sell. I'm squashing my shopping urge by carefully putting away my holiday clothes, while remembering how much fun I had wearing them! And, I'm reviewing my Spring/Summer clothes and planning outfits. The closet organizer apps made a HUGE difference for me. You can search and find many apps like that, and get one that you like. What it does is to let you upload all your clothing items on the app, specifying what it is, its color, brand, season, etc. Because we don't all have a super organized wardrobe and some of us don't have the space to hang every piece so they're easy to see and find(my clothes are mostly folded and put as different category in a Ikea hanging organizer), so the app lets you to search for a particular clothing item easily, and it lets you view your clothing items by category, colors or seasons. You can also combine your clothes to create different looks and put them in the build in calendar so you know which day you wore what, it's extremely helpful for work if you don't want to repeat your looks too much. It also has a statistics section where you can see how many times you have worn each clothing piece or a look, it helps you to know what your clothing preferences so you can invest in the pieces that you wear more often and are more versatile. It also let's you see the clothing items that you don't wear enough or at all, then you can decide if you want to wear them more often or get rid of them.
It's a lot of work having to take pictures of your clothes, and upload them one by one and specify what they are. It took me about a week to do everything. But once it's done it makes your life so so much easier. It also makes me realize how much I already own, and when I want to buy something I can always go to the app and see if I don't already have a lot of similar items.
It's a late comment but I hope more people see it. I don't say that a lot but the difference it made is life changing. I spent way less time trying to think what to wear and trying to remember what I wore last week, getting dressed is so much easier and fun now, and I really wish more people will benefit from it

I've been so inspired by your channel. Sometime last year I started to really revamp my closet and I've discovered or should I say confirmed "my style" so now I'm really picky about what I buy. I don't shop nearly as often and when I do it's almost always second hand since most of my style is not what's "on trend" anyway. Only rarely do I go out and purchase brand new clothes anymore. And when I do add to my closet I try to get rid of at least one item as well - at some point that will stop or at least slow down since I'm shopping less but also because now my closet is starting to have only items that I love and will wear for longer. This was another great video - thank you.

I really needed this, I shop every time I feel a little sad or irritated. My shopping definitely gets triggered by all those marketing emails/ads/ Instagram and then I too scroll the web just to get a “feel” of what’s new. I’m starting now by removing my credit cards from all the shopping websites.

Goals and lists are two of my favorite things in life. 👏🏻😂 For the past two years I’ve been refocusing on my personal style. It’s such a fun journey!! I had the opposite problem. I would wear things until they died. I cringe to think of some of the sweat stained, paint speckled clothing I wore out and about in my twenties😖😂 Thank you for another great video

This is great advice. I also realized the times I wanted to purchase SOMETHING that "feeling" could be supplanted with a walk which is so much better for me. Plus, walking is free!😁

Thank you so much for this thoughtful video. I am newly committed to a 'no shopping spree' over the next year. I have started decluttering and organizing my wardrobe and found many pieces that I have forgotten that I have mostly because I can't see what I have. I am planning to 'shop my closet' and fall back in love with pieces that I had purchased and also find new ways of putting things together. My goal is to save to 'special items' that I have been wanting to purchase but were beyond my reach due to the amount of 'mindless shopping' I had been engaging in and also travel and building my savings. I think that Pintrest will be a great way to learn to shop my closet and to get inspiration for my wishlist that I am saving for. Thank you for your realistic advice. I can tell that you have learned from previous 'hindering habits' and am happy that I can learn from your advice. Thanks again.

So true, less is more! I bought clothes over the years and never worn them but at the time thought I just had to have them! We all reach for our favourite pieces time and time again and definitely don't need an endless range of clothes in our wardrobe. Great video 😄

So glad this bubbled up on my home page. I recently had weight loss surgery & when I reach my goal weight I will have to replace or tailor nearly my entire wardrobe. I love the idea of being intentional about that.

Amazing channel! I start to subscribe your channel last week and now I can't stop watching your videos. Your channel makes me incorporate 'values' in clothes. You just made me realize to choose quality than quantity because I tend to be able to get more clothes with my limited money. Now, I prefer saving my money first while making wishlist then shop consciously in the big sale season for good pieces with great deals. Thank you, Audrey..

Although I can afford buying more clothes, I am recycling my old clothes. I have realized I have a lot of clothes that are trendy this year. As I have lost some weight I am modifying some and really as you said, don't feel the need to shop a lot.

Browsing or window shopping the trends can occasionally be fun for me as it gives me new inspiration, but I always make it a rule to stick to my list and my budget whenever I go out shopping in person or online. Also, I’m totally behind you on unsubscribing from marketing emails, Audrey! It feels better to only get emails from places or companies that are worth my attention or are of high importance in general. :)

Love this video! You did an excellent job and it's so inspiring! I do thrift shop as a hobby though because I like the thrill of the hunt to find something truly incredible. I only buy if I love something 100% and I know I can wear it with at least 3 other items in my closet, and I can see myself still wearing in 10 years.

Pip's Closet I confess that I’ve been to 3 or 4 thrift stores in the past few weeks hoping to score someone’s Konmarie donations. Six if you count kid consignment shops. Lol! I only bought a cashmere scarf and little black dress, so I feel like I did great! (Ok, and two pairs of pants for kids!)

Very well said Audrey 👍 l have been trying to abide by these rules now. I realized end is last year, that I was getting in to this mode of impulse buying a lot & so this year I have decided and set goal for myself that I'll suppress this urge and not buy any clothes, shoes, handbags or jewellery for myself. And I am thankful to such RUclipsrs like you & Alyssa Beltempo who inspire me in doing so. Honestly I have started shopping my own closet now and it's so fun. Thanks so much for all the tips 😊
