It's so interesting to see what items people keep. I have clothing for over 15 years. The pieces are still in great shape and none were expensive. Truly believe the quality of clothing has drastically declined. We need to pay a good penny for just a little quality and it still only gives you a few years. ☹
My mom bought me my first piece of real gold jewelry when I was 16 or 17. I didn’t realize at the time what a generous gift it was. Two decades later, I am still finding new ways to wear it and style it. I love that it makes me think of my mom every time I wear it.
Things I've had for 6+ years: most of my clothing, tbh. One of the oldest is a broomstick skirt from Walmart circa 1998. It's totally synthetic, and the fit isn't the most flattering, but the colors are the best representation of fall I've ever seen. It sparks SO much joy and I've worn it at least once a year since then. Last fall I paired a blouse with it that I'd never tried before, so there are still new things to be done with it!
I have several items in my wardrobe that are over 20 years old. I have learned that if I buy quality, classic and comfortable items in natural fabrics and solid colours (no pattern) I will wear them until they fall apart.
When I was a working girl in NYC in the 1990s I bought a simple, lined black wool skirt at a boutique in the Bronx near my apartment. It is unadorned, fit me perfectly, perfect length for me. I wore it for decades and will be wearing it again once I get a small tear fixed in the slit on the back hem. That's more than 25 years of wearing this skirt. It's just a foundational piece. I also got the cutest crochet top at that shop that I wore until it fell apart.
I love your advice to pay attention to what you’re drawn to vs. trying to convince yourself to like something. I’ve definitely made some purchases I regret because “everyone” said I needed XYZ in my closet. Now I’m focusing more on what I like and what I naturally gravitate toward. Thanks for the inspiration! ✨
I bought my first cashmere sweater on ebay last year after watching your videos. I always liked the look and feel of cashmere sweater, but never bought one as I live in Houston and the winter is not cold enough to wear cashmere often. But as you shared your experience that you tasted water by purchasing one on ebay, It makes good sense to me. I found a beautiful light pink Ralph Lauren cashmere sweater on ebay for only $25. . It was almost new , no pill at all, fits me perfectly, light weight and super soft. I love it and have worn it every time when the temperature went below 50F. My husband saw me enjoy it so much, he surprised me by buying a brand new red cashmere sweater for me as new year gift! Now I have two cashmere sweaters and they mean something special for me. I am sure I will be wearing them for years to come.
I'm wearing a gorgeous honey-yellow Charter Club cashmere sweater that I found on eBay for £25 'buy now'. It fits perfectly and goes with so much of my wardrobe. I am sure you will enjoy your own sweaters for many many years to come!
@@Teverell I am glad you found such a lovely sweater. Enjoy it! Yes, it is funny that I usually hate cold weather. But now I look forward to occasional cold weather here in Houston to wear my cashmere sweaters.
Things I've kept: a pearl necklace from my Dad on my 16th birthday; a gold locket from my Mom; a gold signet pinkie ring from my Mom; an amethyst broach which belonged to my Grandma; my Louie bag, a college graduation gift; my black Lord & Taylor sling backs (resoled twice); a red wool blazer (YSL) which was my Mom's; 501 Levi's; my engagement party lace dress (now divorced & 25 lbs heavier) sentimental; Converse sneakers (I've collected 11prs in different colors & patterns & wear with everything/personal style choice) and finally a gray wool chesterfield coat with blk velvet lapels I bought myself with my very first after college paycheck 30yrs ago. It's too tight, but I smile every time I unzip the garmet bag it's in... felt so grown up & stylish & confident 😎! It was amazing and the most expensive thing I owned.
My ultimate basic that I never tire of and always replace with its nearest cousin" a simple black below-the-knee skirt. Never anything too narrow, an a-line suits me and is comfortable to walk in. It is suitable for visiting a Mosque or a date night or a business meeting. Can't live without it! Love your content.
*A video on belts, please.* How to choose the one that will complement a wardrobe? What's a versatile belt? How to spot a quality belt? Sizing? I just know you have answers to all of these questions and I absolutely love learning from you 😊
I really enjoyed this walk through your 6 years plus pieces you love. I have a pair of, wait for it, gold sequined Adidas. And you’d think they’d be too much … they are not! They are almost a neutral, albeit a very fun one. I’ve worn them with every possible outfit, including a gown when I hurt my foot! They are getting a bit worn, and since I found them in Paris in 2015 … a replacement is not likely. I will never throw them away. They will forever be a part of my wardrobe … even if they become my housekeeping shoes! ❤️
The gold sequined Adidas sound amazing, one of those pieces that become "YOU" in the most memorable way. If you start reserving them for more "important" occasions, they should last you longer.
You showed extremely sophisticated, demanding pieces. They can be viewed for a long time, they are noble and beautiful. It is something that will not become obsolete in many decades. Audrey, congratulations on your extraordinary taste and style!
I have had two wool blazer and a bow tie blouse for 40 years (I am 57). My parents had the blouse custom-made (bespoke) and the blazer was by a high-end designer and they still fit. They instilled good taste in me from an early age. The navy blue blazer is precisely the short style (to the waist) that we can see in Winter 2022-23 collections, and the other one is a classic black blazer.
More than half my closet is 6 years or older! I have one sweatshirt that's 20 years old in great condition. I'm shocked when I hear YT'ers claim that an article of clothing is old if they've only had it for 1 year. I've been going through a style journey and I do have some pieces that are newer and I'll wear them for many years. Thank you for sharing these items!
Hi Audrey... I bought a beautiful blush pink 100% silk blouse about 5 or so years ago at a tiny little thrift store for $1 (I'm not kidding). Everything about it just works perfectly for me... I've been so happy with it over the years, and hope to have it for many more years to come. 😊
Not quite as an impressive find as for $1 (!!!), but my friend bought a 100% silk cream blouse off a thrift Instagram shop and decided it didn't fit her so she sold it to me for what she bought it for - $15. Such a staple❤️
I’ve got lots of things that I’ve had for more than 20 years! They tend not to be so-called classics as I find that shapes and silhouettes for classics change but one off special pieces that I have never fallen out of love with and which transcend major shifts in fashion and style because they are unique.
Hi Audrey, another great video thank you!❤️I bought my Burberry trench coat 14 years ago and still love it (and look amazing). When I compare the price back then vs now, I cannot believe why I was complaining about how expensive it was🤣
I have a cream zip-up cardigan in my wardrobe that was bought many years ago as part of my first-ever work-wear wardrobe. It's got a shawl collar that can be zipped right up into a turtleneck style, and I still wear and love it, despite its age. It still looks as good as it did when I bought it, which is amazing considering it's acrylic rather than being wool or cashmere or any other natural fibre. I probably (definitely!) have other things in my wardrobe that are equally old because I've never bought anything with the intention of wearing it and then discarding it. Everything I've bought has been with the intention of keeping them for as long as possible, so even if I buy from fast-fashion brands (mainly because they're cheap and I haven't always had the money to spend to buy something pricier), I've bought with more of a slow fashion mentality - and no, I've never sought to maintain a capsule wardrobe, or to become a minimalist. I have to say, though, that I appreciate everything I've learned from you and others about building and maintaining a capsule wardrobe, so I think my own wardrobe is slowly becoming more of a capsule, as I like the idea of everything going with everything else rather than just having one top that goes with one pair of trousers.
Since I am 22 this year, my style was very different 6 years ago. It’s just been about 3 years that I started investing in quality pieces however I have few pieces from my mom’s and grandma’s wardrobe dating back to 1970s-80s.. the oldest piece is a Gianni Versace clutch bag that my grandma had when she was in her 20s.. still in great condition. Love it
I've kept many of my items from the 70s, 80s, 90s, etc and I'm so glad I did. Ignore the people who say to get rid of something if you haven't worn it in a year (or 3, or 5, or whatever arbitrary "rule" they make up). Not only do most things eventually come back in style (hello again acid-washed jeans I last wore 30 years ago!), if it makes you happy just to look at it and touch it once a year, that's enough.
@@roomofmirrorsbest Hello, apologies for the delayed response. That is a difficult question to answer since I collect from here and there and sometimes even thrift However, for everyday wear, I love my trousers from Massimo dutti and Mango(always check the fabric tag). H&M also have good ones sometimes but I personally have not purchased one. If I am talking about shirts and tops, I totally love basic and neutrals and I have few from Armani, Isabel marant, Burberry and Lacoste for polos and few of my daily wear, i thrifted and how lucky for me, I thrifted a Chanel knitted top and wow, I wear it atleast once a week Regardless of the brands, the material/fabric is mostly to be considered while purchasing and since I am from a relatively hot climate place, I go for linens and cotton.
@@Wandertheworldwithme I know right, thank you. The condition is not great but I love taking it for dinners lol I am hoping I could pass it on to my kid if/when I have one.
I have a pair of small gold filigree hoops that belonged to my grandmother that were passed down to me at age 14, 23 years later they are still my favorite piece of jewelry. They've taught me that gold is my favorite, and that small understated pieces really stand out better for me.
I have a pair of black velvet lace up ankle boots that I've had for 23 years. I bought them off the clearance rack at Bottega Veneta shoe shop in New York City on a girls' trip. They were only $78 and I've worn them a million times!
It’s easier for wools, silks, and good jewelry to last a long time. The challenge is finding warm weather clothing that will last. Like you, I’m in South Carolina and live mostly in linen and cotton. After a few years, the fabrics really fade…even in good quality pieces. I’ve had beige linen that looked so tired after four or five years, so it’s not just a color issue.
And let's be honest, if you live in a hot climate, you SWEAT. No amount of careful cleaning is going to keep that item looking pristine for years and years. (If there's a secret to this, I am all ears!) I'm in Virginia, and the amount of 90+ degree days puts me in the same boat. I end up having to create fashionable outfits out of performance sports and hiking gear... or just accept that my cotton and linen items won't last past 3 years.
Wow that was a light bulb moment. 💡 now I understand why in Asia we go through so much more clothes. I buy cotton and they fade. But they do look great and then I make other stuff with them. My friend used to get 6 pairs of Kurtas for the summer n use them n them hand them down.
Items I’ve had for many years and still wear on heavy rotation: Burberry trench (20 years old); Aigner tall riding-style boots - 25 years and counting! I’ve re-soled them 3x, and a pair of simple stovepipe pants from Ann Taylor I’ve had for 25 years which I still wear weekly. I’ve had the zipper replaced 3x. Good quality, classic style and good care are the keys to longevity 😊
For me, almost anything vintage or antique is timeless. For example, if you find a 1950s dress that fits you and flatters you, or a Victorian cameo, you’ll have them forever and they’ll always be in style. 😊
This is true. Something legitimately old will always look more intentional (and therefore more stylish) than something that was trendy just a few years prior (since that looks like you simply didn't notice the trend was over).
I have always been drawn to jackets, so I have been collecting them over the past 10 years or so. I have a black leather Moto jacket that’s been in my closet for about 12 years now, and another plum colored one that I’ve had for eight years. My jackets have served me well even during the pandemic while working from home on zoom. They always look professional, and they’re so versatile. I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one that keeps things for so long. thank you for the encouragement
Things that I've had for over 6 years...too many to count, really! But among them, favorites would be: camel coat, beige trench coat, black straight-leg pants, navy cigarette pants, white linen shirt, black pointy toe ankle boots, cognac riding boots, seersucker blazer, white cotton-linen blazer, navy silk sheath, deep red cashmere turtle neck, and black leather zippered-top tote bag. All of these things have been in my closet for at least 10 years.
I still wear a burgundy velour blazer that I bought at the Ralph Lauren outlet almost 20 years ago. I was just out of college, and it was probably the most I'd ever spent on an item of clothing (not counting formal dresses and such). It's just timeless, and so sharp.
I also have a Navy blue jacket, but from Talbot's with gold buttons. I have had it for years, I can't believe it still looks good and still fits. I will never ever get rid of it. I have light weight wool slacks from Talbot's that are pin tucked. They still look good and I will continue to wear them, although I had put them away for several years when pin tucked pleated trousers weren't in style. I had a Corporate job and had to look professional, so most of my clothing was expensive and has lasted. Unfortunately there are pieces I had to get rid of because, well, I am just not a size 4 or 6 anymore and never will be. I have several silk scarves that will always be in my wardrobe and several delicate gold pieces of jewelry my husband gifted to me that are perfect 20 years later. I have only started to purchase fast fashion during Covid. It is serving it's purpose and I do not feel bad if I have to discard them when the style or wear of them is gone. I have a lot of fast fashion Summer tops that I have cleaned out of my closet and each time I look at them, I say, "What was I thinking?" LOL (I am saving to donate when the weather warms up.)
I have one item (cotton Benetton overalls) which I got in high school (abt 30 years ago 😁) and I still love them and I’m still wearing them once in a while: it’s just then it was an outfit for every day style, and now it’s a fun “vacation mode” style item ☺️ I also used to buy jewelry I loved at first sight and most of them I’m still loving after 10-20-30 years and don’t buy much anymore cuz I literally I have accumulated most of my favorite styles already 😄.
I grew up with poor quality shoes, so 3-4 years ago when I bought myself a pair of genuine leather flat black ankle boots, I had no idea I'd still be wearing them today. Now I need to educate myself on how best to clean and take care of them, but I will never go back to buying $20 shoes again. I also have a cream colored thin knit sweater that I've had for probably 12 years that I just pulled out the other day and paired with a midi skirt. It works with almost any bottoms and I can wear it 9 months out of the year where I live.
You’ve always been a delight but recently, your channel has come into a new level of form. Your demeanour, your style and presence have reached an entirely new level of sophistication and elegance. You. Are. Rockin. Bravo!
A few things I've owned for a long time that come to mind are blue ballet flats, a white lace dress and romper, a beautiful maxi floral dress, a pair of black converse sneakers, the perfect fitting long sleeve black shirt and black ballet flats. Still going and I've worn all of them so much.
I have two pairs of shoes that are now more than ten years old and that I still wear (sometimes more often in certain years than others): a pair of brown leather Born lace-up brogues that look great with ankle pants and jeans and a slightly slouchy pair of black leather heeled boots. I regularly moisturize, polish, and waterproof leather footwear, and I keep the boots stuffed with old socks and magazines to maintain the shape. I think I'll have these for a while yet. Great video! Thank you!
First, I will never ever get tired of the boot story! Second, that black blouse looks fab on you, dear. So you. My "keepers" are scarves and jewelry. If something turns out to be a happy piece, it stays. I have a silver ring of twisted strands my friend made that I still adore after 15 years.
Audrey, have you thought about adding a navy blazer with silver detail, since you use navy so much over many years? That way you preserve your other blazer! 😍
You didn't specifically reference it in the video, Audrey, but I love the cream and black cardigan that you wear, starting at 9:07. It's so very elegant, and it suits your style perfectly.
I'm surprised that you get so many of your items from Ebay. (Or did.) Would love to hear more about that. Aren't you afraid it won't fit or look right? Also interested in what you get on Etsy, and how you find buying from there.
I love what you said knowing what you like and not talking yourself in or out of it. I think is so key to know what it is that we like because is our style vs what is been pushed to us because is trending or some we like is wearing it. I have a pair if boots that was an impulse purchase, but I have been wearing for years now and don’t see myself ever getting rid of it. Thanks for sharing 💕
Hi Audrey! Great video 💖 I just want to encourage you to keep all these beautiful things, even as you time goes by & styles inevitably change - the cut of items we think of as classics come & go. My style was very preppy in college (a long time ago) & now I wish I would have kept all those loafers , pleated trousers, button down shirts & blazers that were expensive to me at the time. I am keeping the riding boots I bought 5 years ago no matter what!
I'm not really even into fashion but I've somehow found myself watching three of her videos in a row because she's just kind of pleasant and soothing to listen to. But hey, I'm picking up some things. How did I get here? I'm meant to be WFH. 😂
As I started writing this, I thought I would be talking about one pair of boots. But then I kept remembering more and more items that I have had for many years, some for more than 4 decades! Those would be the designer silk or cotton scarves I purchased in London the summer I was 16 yo, plus a beautiful dark brown leather clutch with a real suede lining. I have a pair of hand-stitched cognac leather tassel loafers from about 1990. The boots I was thinking of are from the late 90s. I actually needed a pair of warm winter boots, but I fell in love with these unlined leather ones and bought them instead. Never regretted it. They have been to the shoemaker's a couple of times for resoling, etc. but they will be with me forever. Two coats I have, circa 1990, a dark green trench coat, and a double-breasted navy wool overcoat. My basic belt is a reversable brown / black one I have had for 15 years.
I have this black velvet embroidered blazer that I’ve had for 10 years now. When I originally purchased it, it was a huge spurge, even though it was 2nd hand. Still, every time it’s part of my outfit someone compliments it. When I’m wearing it, it feels so me! It’s a piece that’s classic, and I know I still have many years left.
I have also kept key high end pieces that I take very good care of so that I may wear than for many years. I am 57 years old and love continue to evolve my personal style I love your videos because you remind me of my younger self. ❤️
I have a green sweater that is 30 years old My grandfather bought it for my mother Now she gave it to me It is still in a very good condition I love wearing it
Thank you for sharing Audrey ✨ i have a dark purple alpaka coat with a silk lining which I bought around 10 years ago. It was half prize but still more than I ever payed for clothing and back then a bit too small. I have worn it very often and in day to day situations eventhough it is very chic. It still looks like new, no signs that it has been worn at all.
I love my Bvlgari zero 1. Got the first set in year 2000. lol quiet a long time ago. Like you said, I kept on being gravitated to it, so as years go by, I collected more items from this collection. I really love every single piece I own and wear them often. I put on one set yesterday to a house concert performed by Jesse Blumberg. You might know him. NY times commented he is a golden toned baritone. He really is! I feel so blessed to be able to see him perform in person.
About 30 years ago I invested in two very high quality gold chains, one in white gold and one in yellow. I wear them both all the time with a variety of pendants. They finally taught me that I needed to quit buying vermeil and just save for solid gold pieces I truly love that would be carefree and last like those two chains. I may have fewer pieces, but the ones I have I can put on and leave on and not worry about taking them off to shower or swim, and I know they will last a lifetime and beyond.
I got a second hand orange silk J Crew blouse with mother of pearl buttons in my early 20s for work wear. It has helped me get 4 -5 jobs it still fits and I love it. It's just looking a bit worn out now .
I only buy fine jewelery on ebay. The safe way to do it is to look for makes you can find in shops in your area and that you can recognize from photos. Unlike vintage bags, they are truly precious and the prices are lower than New not higher.
GREAT VIDEO! I love my "old" classic pieces that never go out of style! I think when a woman knows what best suits her body and personality---changing style really does not dictate---except to up-date what is already in her wardrobe, because it is still all about what best suits her body and personality! When you buy good quality garments to begin with---they are more than worth the years of comfort, wear, and satisfaction you get from them. This my mother taught me from early on. Years before the "skinny jean" was popular, I came across a pair of black sweat pants with a tapered leg---and fell in love! It was perfect for my body type and personality, and I still have them today---they look so classic and not at all like sweatpants! PERFECT for cold northern weather, when even Springtime can still be cold. When it is appropriate, I even wear certain pieces untill they are literally thread-bare before I actually discard them, or save them to use as a pattern to have made over! They are like old and faithful friends I can't part with!
I admire how intentional you are about the items you invest in! Your talk about shoes reminded me about your video where you show how to recognize quality construction in shoes; that video was so helpful, as are all of your videos! ❤️ To change up the button color on your navy blazer, you could always try finding a button cover to fit overtop of it; that way, you can change the appearance whenever you want! Or you could always sew on a new button and save the gold one for when you want back again.🤗
Audrey, this was super helpful. I own a pair of slightly wide, slightly cropped slacks and the light 💡 bulb just turned on. Why am I waiting to wear them to an “event”? The fabric is so light I can wear them with a simple bit of styling duh 🙄. It’s so hot where I live I forget to even think about black slacks. Lol. Your favorite items are beautiful and you’re so right prices are a lot higher now. I’m learning patience and I just started shopping thrift in my area to find nicer shoes. Happy Sunday 😎🌵🤎
I have an off white wool blend pointelle sweater that I got over 15 years ago at Express of all places. When I bought it, I felt like it really captured my style and it still does!
Both my black winter jacket and brown NorthFace jacket have been in my possession since graduating high school (give or take a year or so). Of course, I also have to mention my Clarks loafers which have also stayed in my wardrobe since either junior or senior year of high school. I started out back then with a closet full of things that were comfortable, but didn't really have anything going for them style wise. That, plus I was also deep into my habits of buying things from fast fashion brands, so needless to say that I didn't really save anything for long- 2 or 3 years being the longest. In all honesty here, I don't have many regrets when it comes to how my style has evolved. It was much needed for me to stop being wasteful and practice slowing my shopping habits.
Speaking of H&M shoes, I have this pair of bottaga look alike from the hm premium collection that still looks gorgeous after 2 years of extensive wear. Focus on quality, not the brand
I've got a purple cardigan in an age 13-14 that is now at least 15yrs old! It originally had a fur trim on but I removed that and now use it as a basic cardigan. I don't wear it as much as I would like to but that is mainly because up until recently purple wasn't a colour I'd buy very often but I have since learnt it really suits me so the cardigan will be out much more once I'm back in normal post pregnancy clothes again :). I also have a camisole from the 1910s that has been passed down through the generations that can still be worn today however it has started to take on a yellowish hue and needs the straps replacing so that is something on my to-do list to get it back up to scratch again!
I have a pair of knee high wedge Aquatalia waterproof boots that I think I have worn out. I must have put 100,000 miles on them, and they are starting to feel uncomfortable on the inside. But OMG, they were the most comfy things ever and saved my feet more times than I can count. They looked great with everything. I have been trying to replace them, but haven't had any luck finding an identical pair.
When I was 15 to 20 I was fortunate to receive several high quality gifts, I didn´t realize then how precious they were. Some of them I kept and I still use: a pair of cashmere cardigans, one orange-brown and one wine colored, a pair of gold pendant earrings, a black baby alpaca long coat I bought in a trip to Peru, among others. All of these I-ve had for more than 20 years, they still look great! Audrey, I would love to know where you bought that cream and black sweater you are wearing around min 9.
Great video-question: What brand are the pants? If you have time could you share some brands that have something similar? I’m always having a hard time finding the perfect pants.
I have things that are +20 years old and all look fabulous because they were all elegant designer pieces.Clothes today are really nothing like the quality of yesteryear. This has rekindled the thought that I need to buy a sewing machine and make simple things.
Really enjoyed this video - I’m just restarting my closet, and I’m about to try a seasonal capsule wardrobe for the first time ad it wasps helpful to see how you went about adding these items and what you looked for!
Ironically the things that have lasted the longest in my closet are synthetic. I have a 10 year old faux leather jacket, and I love it and wear it to death. Every time I put that thing on, I get so many compliments, especially from the gf, she must like the bad girls lol But the other thing was a pair of 10 dollar faux suede soft ankle boots I got when I still shopped at Walmart. They've lasted for over 5 years and only now are nearing their end and that's only because I've abused them in winter. I would say it's how you take care of things that counts, but for me it's pure dumb luck. I thrift everything these days cept the delicates , and I've found some real hopefully life long treasures. I really appreciate the things you've taught me about fabric and construction, they're invaluable.
Wow, you're lucky. I've never gotten more than two years out of anything faux leather (always peels, or goes sticky, or just disintegrates). I've had good luck with other synthetics though (e.g., acrylic sweaters).
I have pieces that have been in my closet for years. I am not into trends, as I was, when I was a young girl. I like the classic styles, because they always look so pretty.
Hello Audrey, I love your videos. Being more mindful about buying new items for my wardrobe is a real goal of mine. Recently I spent a morning looking through some nearby fashion boutiques. I prefer boutique shopping to department stores and I'm lucky living in a part of Florida where there are small very individual boutiques. Being super picky about what to buy, I went in 4-5 different shops and looked but did not buy anything! I also didn't try anything on, just looked through what's new, and held some things up to me in a full-length mirror. My reasoning was that I wanted to see what is new and in style, but not purchase anything that wouldn't work with what I already have. Or worse yet, be sorry I bought something, and want to return it. I hate returning things to shops, even if they have a fair return policy. 'Just feel it isn't fair to the shops. I did get an idea of what I might buy, especially when I got home and looked at what I already have. So here's my question: how do you manage looking and trying things on when you don't want to buy yet? Thanks for your advice!
I’ve been binge watching your videos as I try to create a new closet (I’ve been relegated to scrubs and sneakers for 20 years, now I’ve retired and after ditching them find I have little left). Thanks for your tips as I start a new season in life👏
As I am old enough to be your grannie I just wanted to say 'You have taught me to think before I buy'. I always have thought in a scatter gun way, now I think 'How does this work with my other clothes'. it makes for a smaller, more beautiful and sustainable wardrobe.
Hi Audrey, Really enjoyed your video,... I love how thinking things thru as you do makes so much sense, and also makes the most of ones time and efforts, when planning a wardrobe. You speak of a variety of items, yet in each case they are valuable as a distinct part of your wardrobe. Very cool!! Mahalo, mililani ❤️
I agree, really good pieces last a long time and don't go out of "style." Classic choices are always best. I love your station! Thanks for sharing your style journey.
Hi, Audrey, I think you are a very nice lady and exceptionally good at what you do. I wished I was as structured as you are, and as thoughtful about every step you take. I enjoy so much watching you from Amsterdam, where i live.. I am French and love your classical undertone. Good luck! Keep being serene, beautiful and helpful! Scarlett
Keep being your beautiful self and setting a good example for us all! My favorite item in your whole wardrobe is your splendid shawl you have been featuring quite a lot in the past. Love it!
Funny enough my oldest item is a pair of olive green summer pants in polyester material but with a beautiful texture and the fit is perfect. The kick is they are from H&M!!! I agree to study what you feel good in and not buy what you should have in your closet: I prefer short jackets vs regular blazers that I feel shorten my silhouette! Cannot find the black pants made of light wool that you did find: I am hesitant to buy clothes on Ebay or Etsy...I find the best deals in charity shops like SPCA or my local Women Centre store as people are more generous in donating good quality clothes and these shops having usually limited space mark the prices low! forget Savers or similar in Canada: overpriced and no quality items anymore!!!!
Hi Audrey , great content as always . I like the style of the black pants at the end of the video . You said you got them on eBay , could you share the brand ? I love the pants every time you wear them .It’s so hard to find a nice pair of pants for petite women , I’m also petite 5’2” 26/27 waist . I know you use a tailor to shorten your pants , which is advise I’m ready to try . Do you have any recommendations for pants that are similar ? One of my oldest pieces that I love and have had for years is gray boiled wool coat from LL Bean , I get most of my outwear from LL Beans , they do outwear very well and I live close enough to the flagship store in Freeport Maine so it’s easy to go try different sizes on . .
This is such a great video! A lot of things I’ve owned have been passed along or donated due to size fluctuations from having a kids, but some things I’ve have for multiple years are: - Barbara Bixby jewelry that my mom gave me 15 years ago.. the “Algerian love knot” necklace that BB designed for “Casino Royale”. - Semi-precious stones necklaces that I got at Middle East shops in Seattle when I was a teen/ young adult. I love a good gemstone necklace made of Aventurine or Jade. - a denim jacket that I thrifted 15 years ago and still wear as a layering piece - heavy Chico metal boho belts. I love throwing them over dresses for a boho chic look - silk scarves & pashmina scarves ... I wear a scarf nearly every day! - hats.... I have wool cloche hats, floppy sun hats, and wide fedoras. My most expensive one was a $150 Lack of Color (Australian wool) that I thrifted for $80. The one I’ve had longest is a study Safari/ Adventurer hat that I got at Disneyland from the Indiana Jones ride, 15 years ago.
I have quite a collection of Chico belts from quite a few years old, they really dess up plain classics dont they? I esp love the large oval stone and metal ones I never saw them anywhere else. Worn over a minimal dress I look like no one else and with an hourglass figure they bring in too.large waists.
Fortunately, there is an Eddie Bauer store in my neighborhood. I found a well made 650 fill power down coat on sale this month. I will be keeping and wearing this for a long time.
I agree with not shying away from things you naturally gravitate to. I've found that sometimes it's pure luck too. As I get older I try to be more conscious of items I purchase, but even then I think sometimes an "over thought" purchase could end up being "not right". Some of my favourites that I've had for a decade were all items I bought because I liked it and its quality has lasted by chance (and proper care etc.) - I certainly wasn't thinking "oh these are the best quality" when I was in my 20s 😂
About 80% of my clothes are more than 5 years old. The 20% are relatively new only because I had to let go of the ones that either are too worn or don't fit me anymore. I still have pieces from 20 years ago. I don't buy clothes anymore unless I need to for a special occasion otherwise I make do with my familiar and comfy clothes. Fine jewelry, I only started collecting recently so my pieces are all bought within the past 2 years but I plan to keep them for forever.
Thank you for another wonderful video. I have settled into my comfort zone which was my style 30 years ago. The color palette has changed to creamy pale tones with black and gray. I have also returned to vintage jewelry.
Hi Audrey, thank you for this lovely video. I’ve noticed your makeup looks so well in the past videos. Is it possible you could do a video showing the “how”? I think it makes you absolutely beautiful. Xoxo
Loved this video so much. I have a pair of shoes my ex gifted me 12 years ago. I still love them, please don't tell this to boyfriends that came after him 😊
Thank you Audrey again, for giving great advice. I've held onto a few pieces in my wardrobe for practically a decade because they've served me so well. Among shoe wear: A pair of red Coach brand mid calf boots with kitten heels. Perfect fit, very well made, and just the right 'pop' of color to my favored palette of grey/black tailered paints. They were super comfortable; I say 'were" because sadly the sole which was a rubberized material, eventually cracked completely and no amount of glue could repair them and every shoe repair shop I've shown them to tell me it's a custom job that's beyond their expertise. i even tried contacting Coach for advice on where/if I could get them re-soled, and got no response.
I have a skirt in tartan from 1998, and another skirt in red tartan from 2001🤪still wear them, love them, I am 40 now; also I have several pairs of shoes and some accessories (scarfs and bags, and jewelry) from my 20th and as all of them were classics pieces I still wear them and they are not outdated at all
It's so interesting to see what items people keep. I have clothing for over 15 years. The pieces are still in great shape and none were expensive. Truly believe the quality of clothing has drastically declined. We need to pay a good penny for just a little quality and it still only gives you a few years. ☹
It’s greed. 😏
When I declutter my closet it is usually the newer items I get rid of. The older items are better made and still in good shape.

@CCRider don't get rid of them
I have several items in my wardrobe that are over 20 years old.
I find cashmere all the time at the local thrift stores. Luckily there have had plenty of cold days!
OMG---the old Chesterfield coats! Pure class! And the classic sling-backs with a rounded toe--- harder now to find in genuine leather!
Sizing?
I just know you have answers to all of these questions and I absolutely love learning from you 😊
I've just did a little search and seems that you already have a video on belts. I shall watch that 😊 thank you
I really enjoyed this walk through your 6 years plus pieces you love.
That sounds really lovely! What a great purchase - and $1?! Wow!!
ITALIAN SHOES fit me PERFECTLY! I LOVE Ferragamos...but ALL Italian shoes I've tried fit differently than those from China & are great!
Hey do u mind sharing bits of where u find quality pieces? 🤍🤍
That’s so cool that you have your grandma’s purse from when she was young. How cute.
@@roomofmirrorsbest Hello, apologies for the delayed response.
That is a difficult question to answer since I collect from here and there and sometimes even thrift
However, for everyday wear, I love my trousers from Massimo dutti and Mango(always check the fabric tag). H&M also have good ones sometimes but I personally have not purchased one.
If I am talking about shirts and tops, I totally love basic and neutrals and I have few from Armani, Isabel marant, Burberry and Lacoste for polos and few of my daily wear, i thrifted and how lucky for me, I thrifted a Chanel knitted top and wow, I wear it atleast once a week
Regardless of the brands, the material/fabric is mostly to be considered while purchasing and since I am from a relatively hot climate place, I go for linens and cotton.
@@Wandertheworldwithme I know right, thank you.
The condition is not great but I love taking it for dinners lol
I am hoping I could pass it on to my kid if/when I have one.
I end up having to create fashionable outfits out of performance sports and hiking gear... or just accept that my cotton and linen items won't last past 3 years.
for the linen and cotton pieces in otherwise good condition, consider dyeing them to refresh
Wow that was a light bulb moment. 💡 now I understand why in Asia we go through so much more clothes. I buy cotton and they fade. But they do look great and then I make other stuff with them. My friend used to get 6 pairs of Kurtas for the summer n use them n them hand them down.
Absolutely, me too!
I also live in a warm climate and I find that Garnet Hill has great, quality lighter weight dresses and tops.
How much did it cost you to resolve them?
@@haveasmiletoday2814 $30 each time!
Loved this video! I too shop this way, I always buy things I intend basically to keep forever if possible.
I have one item (cotton Benetton overalls) which I got in high school (abt 30 years ago 😁) and I still love them and I’m still wearing them once in a while: it’s just then it was an outfit for every day style, and now it’s a fun “vacation mode” style item ☺️
I also used to buy jewelry I loved at first sight and most of them I’m still loving after 10-20-30 years and don’t buy much anymore cuz I literally I have accumulated most of my favorite styles already 😄.
Great video! I’ve had a pair of wide leg black pants forever and they’ve been such a great basic for my wardrobe.
@@kimberlyperrotis8962 Ahhhh! I had some of those, from Nine West from oh about the year 2000 & I got rid of them 😭
I'm not really even into fashion but I've somehow found myself watching three of her videos in a row because she's just kind of pleasant and soothing to listen to.
Never ever get rid of that blazer!
Can you recommend a source for the light weight wool pants. I have been searching for a while without success.
I have also kept key high end pieces that I take very good care of so that I may wear than for many years. I am 57 years old and love continue to evolve my personal style I love your videos because you remind me of my younger self. ❤️
My heather grey too with flowy short sleeves has been in my closet for ten years. It never goes out of style!
I have a green sweater that is 30 years old
My grandfather bought it for my mother
Now she gave it to me
It is still in a very good condition
I love wearing it
What a beautifully sentimental piece to have!
I've had my linen shirts for 20 years and my favorite winter shoes for over 5 years
I got a second hand orange silk J Crew blouse with mother of pearl buttons in my early 20s for work wear.
I have a classic camel hair coat I purchased 30 years ago. It is in perfect condition. I love it as much as the first day I bought it !
Navy blazer with gold buttons. I can wear it to😉🌷
I have an off white wool blend pointelle sweater that I got over 15 years ago at Express of all places.
I have found that finding a good tailor for my pants has been a total game changer. It's quite incredible what that can do to your outfit.
Such a pleasant rich smooth English, it's a true pleasure to listen to you
Great video-question: What brand are the pants? If you have time could you share some brands that have something similar? I’m always having a hard time finding the perfect pants.
I have things that are +20 years old and all look fabulous because they were all elegant designer pieces.Clothes today are really nothing like the quality of yesteryear. This has rekindled the thought that I need to buy a sewing machine and make simple things.
Love your way of talking. It's very gentle and easy to observe. Thank you for the great tips!
I went to NYC this past weekend and bought my first vintage skirt and jewelry. Thank you so much for the inspiration!
Every time I put that thing on, I get so many compliments, especially from the gf, she must like the bad girls lol
But the other thing was a pair of 10 dollar faux suede soft ankle boots I got when I still shopped at Walmart.
Hi Audrey,
Really enjoyed your video,...
Scarlett
Keep being your beautiful self! My favorite i
Keep being your beautiful self and setting a good example for us all!
I am with you on the quality shoes & boots. I highly recommend Nordstrom Rack.
A lot of things I’ve owned have been passed along or donated due to size fluctuations from having a kids, but some things I’ve have for multiple years are:
- Barbara Bixby jewelry that my mom gave me 15 years ago.. the “Algerian love knot” necklace that BB designed for “Casino Royale”.
- Semi-precious stones necklaces that I got at Middle East shops in Seattle when I was a teen/ young adult. I love a good gemstone necklace made of Aventurine or Jade.
- a denim jacket that I thrifted 15 years ago and still wear as a layering piece
- heavy Chico metal boho belts. I love throwing them over dresses for a boho chic look
- silk scarves & pashmina scarves ...
I love classic staples.
I also used to have blazer I loved looking to replace it was also cornerstone
Hi Audrey, thank you for this lovely video. I’ve noticed your makeup looks so well in the past videos. Is it possible you could do a video showing the “how”? I think it makes you absolutely beautiful. Xoxo
Loved this video so much. I have a pair of shoes my ex gifted me 12 years ago. I still love them, please don't tell this to boyfriends that came after him 😊
My beautiful navy woollen coat is 22 years old and I m still wearing it
Thank you Audrey again, for giving great advice.
I must say, your voice is so calming and beautiful, sometimes I use your video to be my sleeping asmr ❤️
I have a skirt in tartan from 1998, and another skirt in red tartan from 2001🤪still wear them, love them, I am 40 now; also I have several pairs of shoes and some accessories (scarfs and bags, and jewelry) from my 20th and as all of them were classics pieces I still wear them and they are not outdated at all
For me, what I have held on to for decades are hats, capes, and clogs. Thank you!
I just love your brown boots so much
I just love everything you post! You spark joy!
