I looked into building a jet-powered paramotor years ago. Basic research showed that the jets that could produce any usable thrust were very expensive, and they used fuel at about 20 x the rate of a reciprocating engine. That means you would have fuel for 5 minutes. Add to that the incredible noise they make, and their incredible cost and I concluded it just wasn't feasible.
I would have to agree with TheTimboChannel's post completely . Humans for the most part, are afraid to face the unknown , and happy to walk around with the "world is flat" mindset with everything to never change. Thank God for the few who CAN see outside the box and strive to make it happen. Good job Guys!
This jet pack, an open, cement runway, and luigi's smallest parachute -- a marriage made in, well, heaven:
It was the first time anyone had ever flown a jet powered parachute. The fellow couldn't have been more experienced. The pilot, Allan Hewitt is the same one that jumped off a high rise in Hong Kong for a Batman movie. He was a member of the Red Devils in England and a very accomplished stuntman. It was a brave and frightening thing when he took off in this test project. This flight was a proof-of-concept project for a future stunt.
As is the norm with turbojets, the engine is air cooled; the compressor is right behind the air inlet and before the air is blown into the combustion chamber it is blown through and around the parts that need cooling (such as the bearings). The hot exhaust gets diluted by the surrounding air pretty quickly, from a dozen feet behind it feels like a hurricane in a sauna but it's not harmful for brief exposure. The exhaust outlet on the jet's body is very hot, so...don't touch it.
The backpack frame is fiberglass reinforced plastic, engine mounts are aluminum extrusions. It's a turbojet so it's electrical needs are minor; the fuel pump is electric and the pump controls and throttle and data logger are electric, but the power comes from burning kerosene/diesel/JetA. If you want a truly electric jet, figure on a heavy extension cord 'cause it's going to need lots of current. Maybe an electric prop pack would do you?
...the main reasons I don’t feel I need (or even want) an AT2000 are [A] in some cases, the writers/director/producers may want this jetpack concealable, and this unit folded flush in “rocketeer” mode is about 5” thick and a foot long, where the AT2000 is about the size of a frat house party keg (it's as long and thick as my torso), and [B] the AT450 is a $5000 engine and the AT2000 is a $32,000 engine. Remember, we didn’t have a client (and still don’t), this was done on spec and on my dime.
SHOOOOOOOOOOOO.. you look at the sky expecting to see a F22 but all you see is a guy flying at 20mph.
Keep me posted when the next sound barrier attempt is taking place. I would like to have one of the canopy shreds as a souvenir.
I live about a mile or so from where this was filmed. Good 'ol Lake Smellysore, California. Actually, l love living here, and have since 1977. Sure has changed a LOT since then.
"You leave our mother out of this," we cried, all fury rage,
At least she's working for her keep, and nearly twice your age."
All in a days work :D You guys rock!
One unexpected crosswind and the ground comes up really quick.
It's not the fall that gets ya' -- it's the sudden stop.
Thanks 1man1horse--sounds like you got the point of this exercise. In the film industry (at least in the special effects and stunt world), looking and sounding cool is more important than is practicality. As a daily driver, this JPG would get old pretty quick, but as a way to get Our Hero (whoever he is) out of a tight spot.
Eduardo, you're absolutely right, and the takeoff shows the engines (briefly) at full power. It's throttled way back to cruise, but still, it'll never win a tractor pull.
I want one
haha so cute, Jet sound to a gliding chute!
This jet pack, an open, cement runway, and luigi's smallest parachute -- a marriage made in, well, heaven:
May need a good set of roller blades though... lol
If that Jack McCornack is related to the fella who was responsible for the Easy Riser...I would like to shake his hand. It was my first controlled excursion into the clouds. Do not underestimate the new ideas. And please - Authors of this video - about the disparaging remarks: stay wonderful and let not the insects sway your course...give us more.
Looks great, wonder if it's in danger of burning the wing?
seems like a fair bit of power for such small engines. Would do even better on a lighter foot launch. Apart from the noise, a great idea
The only difference between this and powered para-flying is he strapped a couple model jet engines to his back.
IS IT A BIRD ?! IS IT A PLANE?! NO !! IS JETPACKMAN !!
Just a thought...This might work fairly well as a foot-launch rig. One could get the wing up with a standard, wind-assisted reverse launch and THEN bring up the jets once turned back into facing the wind. That way, the wing isn't as much in the direct line of hot gases upon takeoff as it is with the trike.
I like the idea,good job
lol the first 3 secs sounded like iron man charging to shoot :D
safe?NO,some things,just aren't a good idea,this is one of those.
im amazed no one has thought of doing this before, these jet engines have been around for some time now.
Awesome!
A paraglider that sounds like a jet. Ubercool!
awesome!
The sound & the look don't go together, but how cool!
amazing!
Check out Arena 8's new "RD-0146 Aeroglide-Suit". It's not a turbojet-pack! It's a Exothermic-Magna-Tubesuit made from magraphene, which employs jet propulsion through a exothermic accelerated pulse detonation engine (PDE) and is capable of expelling pilots to near hypervelocity speed.
Well done !
I must say, I would love to see that in a movie. I just sounds bad ass!
Dam that had more thrust than I expected.
Every time he flew past I was looking for the fast jet, could not equate the image to the sound!
Fantastic
@standomax
>What turbines are they/?
A pair of AT450s
>you need like a us micro jet AT2000
Really? Were you disappointed in the climb rate? Didn’t it make enough noise? I think the twin engines look and sound cooler than the single, and once it’s flying, look and sound mean more to the film folks than performance enhancements.
However, I've no personal experience with the AT2000, and if you can advise me from your own experience, I'm all ears.
AT450s suit this project well, and …
Haters, keep your know it all syndrome under control please, this was an AWESOME idea!
Look out for me guys, im flying a muthafuckin sky trike.
Just perfect for burning wing!!!and looks like underpowered....
Not fake....those are RC plane jet motors
Awesome
That is the same Jack McCornack. This was his test project for a future stunt for the movies.
How good a paraglider pilot are you? If this powerplant has any practical use, it's as a self-launch system--once they're shut down, these jets have less drag and less weight than any similar powered internal combustion engine or electric motor. But when they're running...I hope your concern hasn't cost you any sleep, 'cause these engines sure don't have any efficiency to speak of at low airspeed.
AWSOME
Looks cool but that takeoff was a disaster lol
dell guru that was the very first time anyone had ever done that!
Cool craft, bit noisey but hey it looks cool
How much thrust and range this got?
Litres per hour etc
Boy wouldn't that piss off the neighbors.
@airsoldier2001
Sure would be nice if the poster's where here to give information once in a while!
@0172shane this is not useless and not stupid... its a great idea !!!! as it eleminate dangerous torque and gyroscopic effect of a standard propeller paramotor unit, also there is no risk of being hit by a turning propeller
thats awesome
Well -I- sure as heck wouldn't! I strapped them to the other guy. :-)
Hi RedAdomChannel. There's a bit more involved in making an aircraft engine the size and shape of an oatmeal box; you can search "turbojet" on Wikipedia for the basics. And if you've been following this topic, you already know the point of this exercise: to entertain moviegoers.
That's the usual explanation when you see something apparently pointless on the silver screen. Like, what's the point of Jabba the Hut putting Princess Leia in a brass bikini? Tah dwana holo, koochoo.
how did you insulate the heat form the jet's body and the pilot ?
You need to try it with a 15 meter speed wing .
I really liked the near vertical Blast off !
Give the 15 meter wing a try , I think you will be impressed !
so, how does it work?
Its not a parachute ... Its a Paraglider ...
Actually those engines are being used in all their potential... He would need bigger engines to overpower a regular paramotor engine.
You can see that by observing the launch...
iiiiiiiiiiirrrrronnnnnnnn mannnnnnnnnnnnnn this iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirooooooooooooooooon man
Wow. I don't think I've ever seen so many trolls in one place. Why does everybody have to point out how "this isn't practical" or "this doesn't look safe." Yeah, buddy, you're right. It's unsafe. He should be wearing a parachute. Oh, wait...
And who the **** says "that CAN'T be efficient" and then asks, "is it?" You just said it was impossible for it to be efficient.
YOU are why kids play video games now instead of flying control-line planes, hunting birds with a slingshot, and going camping.
What material did you use to build it???
He would be a lot safer without those wheels
How does this stack up with the Troy Hartman Jetpack?
Jet engines are great for flying very fast and/ or at high altitudes. At low speeds however, jet engines kinda suck from an efficiency point of view. A paraglider is about the worst (slowest) application for a jet engine that could be found.
Terrific video !!! Wonderful flight. But this is NOT a Jetpack...LOL.
When were jets renowned for their silency ?
Seems dangerous
maybe if the jets were on the frame of the glider?
What is kinetic about 2 model aeroplane jet turbines?
Nothing
@AJsoCal this is so cool I would love to know more about those jet engines,
How many pounds of thrust for each of them? How much fuel do they consume? and how much fuel did you have in a tank on take off?
thank you, Cainen
where do i get one
startup sounds like fucking iron man
wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnngggggggg shoooooooooo
What Mach number you running there?
1:12 Oh look you witnessed an alien drilling operation. xD
I don’t know about that
I thought this sport was supposed to be peaceful and relaxing?
That sound... I was waiting for Ironman to shoot
@0172shane This was a poof-of-concept for a stunt group working on some new ideas. The pilot and and designer have worked on many movie sets, including 007 & Batman. Google Sky-Science for the pilot, Allan Hewitt and Kinetic Vehicles for the designor, Jack McCornack. Interesting people.
REALLY!!... A JET PROPELLED PARACHUTE!!
the jetpack should be mounted on the craft, not on the pilot for more stability.
Oh wow, this was done in the IE. ._.
heyyy..man thats sooo cool...
can u please tel e how u guyx did that,i am participating in a compitition nd i have to make some thing nice to win...
please help me..
Wow.... feels like I just watched a video of a chainsaw being used to cut butter..... but who cares? That's was friggin' COOL!!
seems kinda dangerous
Whining noise reminds me of that sound from Iron Man
Sound of jet fighter & speed of cow. Cool....
pretty damn brave
Nice
Exactly. You CAN plant petunias with a back-hoe, but that doesn't make it a good way to do it.
This looks dangerous has heck. Two words come to mind. Fire and Explosion. You got both strapped to your back being flown by a flammable wing. Does Hindenburg Zeppelin come in to mind?
Still a hazard hit a gust of wind and if that wing goes close to those engines sat night night...
dodgy take off but where can i buy these and how much do they cost ? thanks for reply
holey shit i totally want 1
Kool
Wow - who in their right mid straps a couple of Jet Engines to themselves - other than Wile E. Coyote of course ?
WOW
Get rid of the trike.
I want one.
Ha ha John Henry vary funny. I think i saw that one when the jet pack blew up on the coyote. All kidding aside guys Great job and fly safe.
is it hard to fly with such big balls?
