Goerge started out as a Jazz guitarist. When his album Breezin came out there was only one vocal composition on it. I come from his hometown of Pittsburgh, the story is that When George was waiting to record Masquerade. he played through it in rehearsal and sang to it. They love it so much that they put it on the album. That really started his professional singing career. Then he recorded The Greatest Love of All and Broadway sealing his career. He is a fabulous guitarist!

@@deborahscalise3215 Yes! Because his commercial hit is the relevancy here. So much so "The Midnight Special" had he and Carlos Santana DUAL it out. George was such a gentlemen he let Carlos take more of the song. In the projects 1969-74, Carlos Santana was our "Guitar Hero." But when "Breezin" was released George was my hero. The timing was right, a better version of "Bobby Womack." His version wasn't as beautiful and complex as George Bensons. George hit two birds in one stone, in the same album is "Affirmation" from Jose Feliciano. Both those songs dominated over the originals by critics. Kinda rare.

When Glenn Medeiros released his version in 1987, I was living in Costa Rica. There were a couple of radio stations that played mostly music in English, and they would have local top ten countdowns in addition to broadcasting Kasey Kasem's American Top 40. Glenn's cover was a hit in Hawaii and in other countries before making it back to the US mainland. I heard the song climb the local charts and then fall back off. Then someone recorded a Spanish version. It had climbed the local charts and fallen off before I finally heard it start up the US charts.

It was written and originally recorded by Leon Russell in 1972. After covers by Helen Reddy (1972) and The Carpenters (1973), George Benson released his cover in 1976. It became his first big hit. You will love the guitar/vocalization pairing as well as Jorge Dalto's piano. This Masquerade evokes such a darkened jazz lounge feeling, you can almost smell the smoke.

I used to always get this confused with the theme song from the movie Arthur, Christopher Cross' Best That You Can Do. Partially due to the fact that I was just a kid, and all smooth jazz sounded alike to me back then. But Benson has a really good voice, and even nowadays, he is still a good singer.

Add to your more of list James Ingram! Just once, I don’t have the heart, Baby come to me (duet with Patti Austin) Somewhere out there(duet with Linda Ronstadt) for classic 50’s romantic song you two definitely wouldn’t go wrong with Lenny Welch “Since I fell for you”For a journey into rich manly tones I strongly suggest Brook Benton “it’s just a matter of time, Rainy night in Georgia. “ much love and happiness robsquad family ❤😊

You definitely should react to "Turn Your Love Around" from late 1981 which is one of his best songs. "On Broadway" is another great choice. One of his most underrated and least known songs by George Benson is "Lady Love Me One More Time" from 1983. Billy Ocean's "Loverboy" is a fun song with an awesome video.

Hey Amber, Have you hear of an 80's group named The Jetts? It's a group of brother and sisters...I think like 9 of them. They wrote the lyrics and music and played the instruments to a number of big hits in the 80's... You got It All; Crush On You; Make It Real... You Got It All has a sax solo that you will really love. They were really good and cool that they were all family. Also, how about Nu Shooz... they sang Point of No Return and I Can't Wait. I suggest I Can't Wait first.
