- Understanding how to use High-Speed Sync Flash Photography can be confusing. Why use high-speed sync for portraits anyway? Here is, for me, why and how to use high-speed sync in portrait photography. HSS photography doesn't have to be a mystery, to me I have a very cut and dry reason I choose to use it. This is NOT about HSS vs ND filters, maybe we'll talk about ND filters in another video. In this video, learn flash photography in this high-speed sync tutorial about easy flash photography.
Here's an EASY guide on High-Speed Sync EXPLAINED. A Flash Photography video for you.
Hope you enJoy!

Great video thank you for sharing. Maybe you could tell us reasons we can't use hss
Some flashes don’t have HSS. And it does lower power and suck up the battery so you have to take that into consideration:)
You are the person who has help me tremendously in the way I take pictures and how they come out. I appreciate all the content you have provided the world with
That means so much to me. So glad I could help!
Canon 135mm f2 is an underrated lens, it’s one of my favorite and most used lens for portraits, great job as always Vanessa.
That’s what I always say! Such a great lens
Came to know your Chanel by chance and your videos are simple and easy to understand and not with the usual hifi stuff which is difficult for a novice to understand. Thank you !!
Welcome aboard! Thx for being here :-)
Thank you Vanessa, helpful and informative video! Good luck!
Thanks!!
Holding that reflector up. Check out them killer pipes! 😜
As always, great info! Thanks for taking the time out of your day to do this Vanessa.
Haha thx
Thank you for explaining this. I've been struggling with this issue for awhile and didn't know the reason why my pictures were over exposed. Thanks.
Simple straight forward explanation! Thank you VJ
that's exactly what I was hoping for :-)
Love watching your videos. You are a master at the art! Thank you for sharing your expertise.
Thanks so much ☺️
Great explanation. Actually makes sense!!
Goal accomplished 👍
Great explanation of HSS and some beautiful portraits with nice soft backgrounds. I was surprised to see the flash modifier pointing straight ahead. When it's elevated to such a height (above the model's head) I thought it would be angled downwards normally - like about 45 degrees.
Depends on the direction of light you want 😉
@@VanessaJoy Very good point! Ive heard a few people commenting that using HSS a lot may put additional strain on equipment which could lead to a shorter working life of flash gear. Have you ever experienced this yourself?
Thank you for this Vanessa!! You inspire me 👍
So happy to hear it thx ☺️
Great demo by two of my favorites.
Aw thx ☺️
absolutely love your video! what brand is of the studio flash and sync attachment?
In the description ☺️ all Profoto
Thanks again, great tips. Hi from NZ!
Thanks for watching!
Hi from Berlin / Germany, too!
Excellent video! I do have a question as to where you begin with HSS. Is it trial and error that you arrived at 1600 shutter speed? Thank you!
That’s where it wanted to be to the the aperture and exposure I wanted ☺️
@@VanessaJoy Thanks!!!
Amazing video. Could you cheat and use HSS on your trigger WITHOUT having a flash? As a way to avoid using ND filters
HSS only applies to the functionality of the flash, it doesn’t darken your exposure when using natural light like an nd filter does
Excellent video as always. Question: with the Shutter Speed that high, wouldn’t it kill the ambient light...ie the hair light which was so pronounced at the beginning? Thanks.
Yes absolutely, which is a preference whether you want that or not, controlled by how high you go of course
Thank you Vanessa for your tips
You're so welcome!
I hadn't realised that you can high speed sync on non-Canon flash, I've only done it with speedlites. The 135mm is surely the hidden gem.
Depends on the gear :)
Yeah, I gathered, I'm still using studio lights that Noha forgot to put back on the Ark! \o/
RT Speedlites for location.
I have been looking at the Profoto air range, though, they look good.
Thank you!
My pleasure
Hi, I've been thinking about adding an ND8 to solve the exposure problem, but I'm worried about the color bias
You can definitely do that. I’d assume the higher quality filters don’t affect color so much.
You don't generally get any colour cast issues with a good quality ND8, colour shifts are more common from 6 stops and beyond, but of course, you don't get the benefit of fill flash, either.
I think one point to remember also though is lenses are best at F4. If you're looking for sharpness now you can do a lot of post production stuff sure but if you want to get the best out of your lens many lenses operate best between F4 and about FA so yes shooting down at 1.7 might be nice but you actually decrease the image quality ... So I think there is a slight trade-off
That’s negligible
@@VanessaJoy yrd and no dependent on the look
i have never used hss, thank you for that, just for laughs that first image of Julianna perhaps we can say it was high key ;} Blessing
Haha yeah. High key for sure
I'm trying to shoot HSS with my canon R5 and my profoto B10 but whenever I try, it returns to 1/200th. Any tips please on what I'm doing wrong? Thank you so much! 🙏🏼
You need to set the strobe to HSS
@Vanessa Joy I actually had a shoot today and the HSS worked suddenly. Lol I didn't change anything other than the setting the air remote to hss which I had done previously but without success. Thank you for the response.
Yay!
nice shoot
Thanks 🙏
Um except having an nd filter what should i do if my camera doesn't work with high speed sync?
Some would say the ND filter is actually better than HSS so that’s your route for sure
@@VanessaJoy ahh thank you for replying vanessa but good nd filters are expensive😶 ill try to get one of those though☺️ thanks again
Would have been nice to explain what the flash is doing and the drawbacks to HiSpeed Sync. Loss of flash power/ flash to subject distance, etc....especially for speedlights. In other words...why not just have HSS on all the time?
Why? You already know that. 😉
Nice teach girl
Watching Vanessa working with Julianne inevitably brings to memory a good old song by Carlos Santana. Summer Lady.
I guess with this time lag this summer we'll be watching Vanessa playing snowballs in Central Park.
Su-m-m-m-er la-a-d--i-e-s....you look g-o-o-d to me...

love your channel, but I don't watch vertitalc videos; they are unprofessional even if ADHD millennials love them
Don’t watch Friday videos. Always vertical 😉 Tuesday at 9:45am, always horizontal for ya.
