I'm doing Goretober, Inktober is a bit tame for me for spooky month and as an avid horror fan LOL (And I agree, I really hate the prompts for this year!)
I plan to take on Inktober, but using promts from previous ones (this is my first attempt at Inktober), because I dont like the prompts for this year. I hope to use gouache for the first time too😊
I don’t normally work that small but it’s definitely best for inktober!! Playing card size sounds interesting, you can actually buy blank ones to draw on I think!
October is less than a week away and I completely forgot about Inktober until this video popped up on my feed. I tell myself every year that I'm going draw every prompt but always end up only drawing less than 10 so I'll try again this time.
A few years ago I did Inktober every other day and mixed the two prompts of those days together. It was really fun and a great idea for those with less time on their hands.
I've done Inktober several times, and after a 2 year break, I am going again this year. well I say I did "Inktober" but I discovered the first year that the prompts did nothing for me at all... so I simply set my goal as an ink art piece per day. I checked out this year's prompts and again nothing in it is inspiring to me at all. I prepare by building a morgue of reference photos that have things that I am interested in including/using for drawings. I also start doing daily sketching in September and start off with one or two finished pieces so that if one day in Oct I am just NOT able to finish, I sneak in a ringer, lol. Even discarding the prompts, I found it fun, challenging and it greatly improved my ability to deal with ink (I do pencil sketching and watercolor most of the time).
Yeah the prompts are rubbish but in a way for me I like that because it pushes me out of my comfort zone and makes me do things I don’t normally do. Obviously that’s not going to be for everyone but inktober has become easy for me over the times I’ve done it so I’m kinda happy that this list, although uninspiring is going to challenge me more
@Hiro_Ieyasu I think the issue with these prompts is that firstly there are several words that mean the same thing but also they are pushing people to have to create a narrative which is restrictive
This year will be maybe my 8th Inktober/October drawing challenge! I need to print out "Keep it simple" and staple it to my forehead 😂 I've got a knack for taking a challenge and making it way harder for myself. I almost picked recreating 31 album covers for my October art challenge but I know that's going to be nuts (unless I pick things like The Beatles' White Album) I think it's also good to think of Inktober and related challenges more as a learning experience and not a obligation to bust out 31 perfect pieces. I get really hung up on making every year better than the last, but it's ok to have some less great pieces as long as you learned and had fun!
I did my first last year and from the start I used half a page for each except for the last which is full A4 and Halloween based. Some days I chucked some watercolour on for a change. I didn't follow any prompts by anyone, I just did my thing and apart from one day I enjoyed the process. This year it will help me crash through 100 pieces for the year. I'm on 78 at the moment, so happy days. Thank you for the tips.
Oh with inktober you’ve be beating your record then! Good luck with this years! I’ve always used the list because I like the challenge of having a list of things I wouldn’t have chosen. And if I hate the list the better the challenge! 😝
Im.glad I watched this. I love your use of alcohol markers. This will be my 4th Inktober. It challenges me each year. Definitely want to follow your work thus October. Thanks for the tips.
I’ve failed each Inktober the last five years. I’ve got a small sketchbook and gorgeous copper ink to use with the black this year (I’ve had it for a while but I think it’ll be great with these prompts). I’ve had a lot of extra time recently though and I think I can actually do it this time!! Good luck, y’all!
Great advice 😊 i finished Inktober once. I did birdtober the last two years, I am going to do it again. Most of the prompts on this years inktober are things I can’t draw 😄 great drawing ❤
@@zoehartist Checking out the many challenges, trying to figure which one feels right for where I'm at as an artist and person. It goes how it goes.
Hullo Zoe, I believe every single one of your “tips” are spot on! I wish I could remember who had 5he idea of sketching out your ideas on a calendar, they used one of those big desk calendars the ones with 2 inch squares for every day. They followed a prompt list and did ideas for each day in the small squares and created finished artwork in a larger sketchbook. I have tried several times to finish InkTober, I chuckled at you saying “Win” InkTober! Thank you for sharing your wonderful ideas for success in InkTober!
hey Zoe, great tips for Inktober but personally this year i stick to my short prompt list only 9 prompts, I made my own prompt list and i chose my own medium. I love the control and planning it allow me to do.
This is my first year that I'm going to try inktober I've always followed in tober and loved it just always been too nervous to start it but this year I'm actually going to give it my best try in your video is so helpful your tips and tricks are so relevant to my life and probably everybody else's thank you for your great advice and by the way this artwork in this video is so up my alley I love it so much❤
My tips - make your own list of prompts. I chose animals, or something that I know that I'm interested in drawing. I always find the official inktober prompts to be vague or ambiguous, or it requires me to try and draw something I'm not good at. It's better to do something you enjoy rather than force yourself to do something you don't. Your drawings will be better. Paper-size: I find A5 is my best size for drawing - it's not too big and it's not too small. I find using smaller pieces of paper to be more difficult to draw something I like. Use the paper size you feel most comfortable with. Sometimes I find that I run out of room to draw on small pieces of paper so you don't want to go too small with it. Prepare your supplies before hand. The first year I did it, I ran out of ink. Make sure you have enough fineliners, and ink. I used Winsor and Newton inks one year and that helped me a lot. I bought a set of eight and there is still a lot of ink left over, even now, so I'll go back to them again if I do it this year.
@@craftyhobbit7623 I think the whole reason most people do Inktober is to challenge themselves and this is why they do a list created by someone else. While I like the idea of making my own drawing prompts doing something I’m used to drawing is not a challenge and therefore the whole challenge is pointless. I understand what you mean about working on a5 I did this 2 years running. The reason I recommend doing smaller is doing an a5 size drawing with a busy lifestyle every day is not achievable for most people and that is why they fail.
Great tips Zoe and I love how your artwork turned out, those colours are fab together. I'll be doing the ArtyFartober prompts again this year, excited to see what Tori and co come up with this year, and I'll hopefully be finishing the whole thing this year - Only finished once in 4 years so far :) I'll look forward to seeing all your Inktober creations xo
Can’t wait to see what you come up with for ArtyFartober! I might have to have a go at a couple of the prompts like I did least year if I get the time!
For me the less repetitive the better. I decided to create my own list (I'll share it shortly it's still not complete) focusing on design dragons based on different animals. No way I would have time for every day, so I decided to allow myself 3 days per dragon (ideally studies of the animal in question, brainstorming, and a finished sketch/drawing). I'm always very tied up in work in October, I don't see myself completing 31 pieces.
The last 2 years I thought it was a good idea to do 2 lists with a full time job 🤣. Sounds like you’ve made it work for you, I believe rules should be broken
Great tips. It really is a challenge juggling your time to create artwork every day and planning so that you make it through. For me it’s the fear of trying to create 31 artworks in a month! I doubt I ever complete as much as 10, and I certainly done do it every day. I’ve done 2 years so far and am looking forward to planning this years. In the first year, like you suggested, I kept them simple and small, but I got so bored of them as I prefer working larger, A4 is my preferred size, and I prefer painting, can’t do one of those every day. This year the prom-list is like a story, so I might make a comic strip illustrating a couple of characters going on a camping trip. Sounds a bit adventurous so I will try and plan it in September and hope the idea pans out.
I started a comic book thingy that I started on 1/10/2024.. worked on a page every day.. all ink.. some days I could only do one panel and some days I did like 3-4 pages..
