The moaning at the beginning of the song is not Shirley's voice; it's Madonna's!
In 1996, Nellee Hooper and Marius de Vries remixed "#1 Crush" for the soundtrack to Baz Luhrmann's modernised Romeo + Juliet film adaptation. In addition to downplaying the guitars and reworking the percussion and synth elements of the song, Hooper added a distorted vocal sample from Madonna's 1995 single "Bedtime Story", which he also produced.

Proof that a good song, performed well, is all you need. Drummer keeping a solid bead with an inexpensive electronic pad, basic instruments, paired down arrangement - and an amazing voice of course, and it's just as good as the slick production from the record. This version actually has more soul. Nice.
