Jory goodman? , more like Jory goodVIDEO
My philosophy about homage watches goes like this:
You love milk. You LOVE milk. Alas, you can't afford to buy a cow, not in a million years.
However, you CAN afford a goat. The goat can give you milk. It's not exactly like cow milk, but it's milk, and you LOVE milk.
So you have two options: to buy a goat and enjoy the milk, or to never buy a cow and never enjoy any milk.
So I buy goats!
Might as well just buy water, close your eyes and pretend it's milk
Henry Steinmann But... we Love milk!!
Is that all you do with the goats??🐐
@@underachievingwatchcollect1878 Well, yeah. Why, what do you do with them?
Briscoe17555 that depends very much on where you are.
The orient looks great, I have a cadisen in gold vertion and looks beautiful, super classic and well done.
The Orient President looks the best !
Unobtainable, vintage homages are ok with me - thank you Steinhart!
My Parnis was $70 and keeps time just as good as my Rolex FWIW.
Even if it does (which it doesn’t) in a month you will say otherwise, assuming your cheap Chinese watch still works. I have even had high end Chinese watches that aren’t very well made. The only reason the movement is good is because it’s not Chinese.
I mean if we're talking about keeping time my 19$ casio is better than both
@@vivelajonny Of course! And a photograph I took with my digi-cam is much more accurate, faster, and cheaper than commissioning a talented artist to make an oil pairing of the same scene. ^_~
@@hochspannunglebensgefahr5339 Parnis will keep good enough time for the price point of course a Rolex will keep better time it’s 200x more expensive
My Parnis was Broken After two days 🥲
Blancpain Fifty Fathoms homage:
Rolex Submariner
Yeeeee
I really love the orient president in gold with black dial and no diamond indexes.
JR 007 beautiful watch. The dial is more of a dark grey or navy though.
Have the og orient president in gold. Very rare piece but definitely a fantastic homage. Keeps great time & has great shine.
The pink Mido Commander is one of my all-time favorites. I want one so badly
That Seiko SGF204 has a bit of history. It has been in production essentially unchanged at least 33 years. That says a lot. I bought my SQ new in 1987 whenJapan was the peak of their industrial might. You can be certain, like with with everything Japan was doing then, Seiko bettered an existing design and sold it at far less cost to the masses. For perspective; The following year. Compare a Harley Sportster of that era to a Honda Magna. And you get the picture. Japan was brilliant back then forcing everyone to raise their game.
I keep it in a high state of polish -jewelry cleaner before each use.
The title of this video should be "Rolex Day Date Watch Homages from Companies I Actually Like"
Homages are fun. As a Rolex and Omegas I enjoy my homages from Phoibos without risking my life. Steinhart makes homages and Paul Newman homage is a watch I would get.
I have the Seiko and I love it!!! Favorite watch!!!
The Seiko is fantastic if you consider its historically long production run under different model names & quartz movements. Lots of dial/bracelet/color diversity, many of which can still be acquired for a song. The only combination I haven’t found is a SS case with a silver dial.
I own a gold-plated Seiko datejust on a president bracelet, paired with an onyx-black dial. It was my grandfather’s daily wear since the mid-90s up through his death in 2020.
Citizen SuperKing, early to mid ‘60s. They used a handwound Citizen Homer Date movement or the Citizen Jet Autodater movements. At 37.5mm (sans crown), the case surprisingly accomdates modern 18mm jubilee-style bracelets & endlinks manufactured by modern Citizen. Not often seen, but I think it flies under the radar as a great Rolex homage.
Parnis great watches for a fraction of the price
My brother loves Parnis watches. He is on a pretty tight budget so they work for him.
What bothers me the most is the name. Reminds me of the male genital. Personally I just ordered a Pagani Design and I'm looking forward to it.
Steinhart does have a lot of non-Rolex homage watches and put out some really unique looking limited editions occasionally, but the Rolex homages has the highest demand, so it gets the most attention.
I only have their Ocean GMT with Coke bezel, generally go Seiko for dive watches and wear my Glycine Airman more often for dual time nowadays, but the Steinhart is ridiculously well built for the cost. If I was to add a bronze diver, it would likely be a Steinhart or possibly their bronze Marine Officer chronograph.
The NEW 2024 Super Seville looks amazing
I've spent months contemplating getting one of those Orient Presidents. I love the stainless steel/black dial variant. This video might have pushed me over the edge!
I have the older one, with stick indices and acrylic crystal. It's fantastic, but they no longer make that version.
Orient is the best homage from pateks, rolexes to even cartiers. The signed commander at the bottom of mido watch looks like a disney signature and it's too big.
Bit of a funny story. Now before I go into this I’m a current Sub 16610 owner and a former Datejust 16013 owner(that watch was my grail watch and I was disappointed in its performance which was heartbreaking) and honestly I can understand why people own homage watches.......seeing as how I own a few myself. Now granted I also own a Seamaster Professional and a Tag black coral professional but I also have a couple of Invicta pro divers with some difference in cosmetics, an Orient President, a Parnis Coke GMT homage, an Alpha Pepsi GMT, a Steinhart Mil-Sub and the Bulova super Seville in two tone with a champagne dial. I love them all because they give me a taste of trying different watches without throwing down an arm and a leg for on and I don’t see the harm as long as the person isn’t blatantly trying to pawn it off as a real article. Granted I want to try another 16013 Datejust out, maybe it was a stroke of bad luck but that watch was a headache and for some reason when I’d bring it to the watchmaker, they’d say everything looked fine........the watch was gaining almost 20 seconds a day. Anyway, Homage watches are just as controversial as fashion watches and yet they both have their market of people. I mean Apple watches are considered the mainstream if you’re gonna wear a watch so the fact that there are people who just care about wearing a traditional mechanical watch is enough for me to say have at it. Wear what you like really. Who cares what other people think, as long as it’s not a fake/replica watch that’s ripping off another brand I personally don’t see the harm. Besides wearing that Invicta has made certain people want to move up to the Submariner, including me. Enjoy the hobby and have fun!
I like the vintage inspired Rolex homage pieces from Steinhart as well the non-homage range & recently I purchased two Rolex homage watches from a brand called Gevril being a GMT as well as a Chrono but they are still in transit, so I cant comment on them yet. The interesting thing with the Gevril purchases being Rolex homages is that they both have different movements, one an ETA movement & the other is a Selita SW330 so I am looking forward to compare the differences TT.
Gevril has actually made some great pieces (and originals) over the years. They actually released a Newman Daytona that was said to be EXACTLY like the real thing (they actually machined each part from a real Newman Daytona). Those watches sell for thousands of dollars on the secondary market now.
@@mcstarling07 thank you for information as the brand is new to me but I had heard of the model you refer as I do remember reading about this in an article from Wei Koh in Revolution watch magazine now you mention it. Still waiting for them to arrive, they are listed for $3995 & $4295 MSRP. I bought them off DROP fo around the $695 price point, one with the ETA the other with the Selita SW330 so I thought it was worth trying them out at this price. Stay tuned for an update hopefully they arrive today.
What’s the model number for the GMT please? I’ve looked at a thousand Gevril watches since reading your comment but can’t one!
@@paulcastaldi8588 here is the link to the two models that I purchased off DROP about 10 days ago, they are also both on the Gevril website & make a regular appearance on DROP as I have seen them a few time appear, hesitated, but thought at the price based on the specifications it was a good opportunity to compare an ETA movement against a higher speced Selita movement as opposed to the SW200 we see in many MB or Oris watches. They are yet to arrive but were shipped the next day, but I am currently abroad at my other home away from LA. James G Arthur thanks ever so much. I’ll check them out!! 🙏
You missed the Bulova Super Seville has an ETA 2834. This is the same movement as the Tudor DateDay this means it can more than hold it's own.
I bought a semi-vintage Timex Q Quartz a couple weeks ago at a flea market. After I brought it home, popped in a new battery, and shined it up...my son went nuts over it. It's a two-tone datejust homage..and its actually gorgeous. I gave it to my son, and he's gotten more comments and questions about it than all his other watches combined.
The Gevril Tribeca is I think one of the best Rolex homages.
Why knock Steinhart?
The Ocean 2 is an original design and looks great.
I have two Steinharts and they’re great watches..
There’s a reason so many like them!
Hey Jory great vid as usual , I have the Gen 2 version of the Orient , Orient didn't call it the President the Fans did , Orient does not acknowledge this model on any of there corporate web sites ect and as you probably know its a discontinued model. Although it doesn't hack or wind its an exceptionally well built and well finished watch that punches well above its price tag, I sourced my watch out of the Middle East about 10 months ago for 670AUD delivered to Australia.
The seiko snxj92k is a pretty good looking datejust homage with day date complications
TT looks like Steinhart heard your thoughts, as they have released in France some solid watches that are not Rolex homages, an excellent "Field Watch" actually is one of them that you would most likely love & wear proudly.
is the Orient Neo 70's Panda chronograph close enough to a vintage Daytona to be an homage?
I'm watching this while wearing my Seiko 5y23-8a69 (long winded ref. number, I know). It used to be my Dad's and he gave it to me last year. I love this thing.
Really love the Mido, Jory. Also for mine, the Hamilton blue dial , Jazzmaster day/date is a winner. Great budget Rolex Datejust 41 blue alternative
Steinhart fuccboi here. They do have designs that are their own.
But their bread and butter has always been quality homage pieces. I do like that they make homage pieces with certain changes/sizes that people would like to see them in.
you can fund those orients without the fake diamonds on ebay, they demand a bit of a premium though
"Ahhmages"
Timex. 2 tone day date comp(like expedition) 35mm case 18mm lugs, domed min crystal 30m wr no cyclops, mine has a blue sunburst dial i love it.
Love the last seconds of the video. That was Brilliant Jory! Also a Rolex President in on my trail list as well but it will be a long time before I pick one up if ever.
My Pop is a big fan of Mido. He proudly wears his Commander every day. Recently, he had a birthday and I bought him the Multifort Adventure. Anyway, I enjoyed this video.
I have also the same Mido Commander in beautyful condition from my father, i thought its a "copy" of the Day-Date and i was not able to understand, how is it possible, that a swiss company "copies" an other swiss company. But im now happy that its not a "fake", after your video:))
Ohh and i forgett to say, the Mirexal has also an "Day-Date" Homage
I like Timefactors homage of the Rolex Explorer with their Smiths Everest PRS-25 in 36mm. If you like the Explorer but can't afford one this is a great rendition.
Good video. I'd like to see a list of the watches discussed in the description. I like companies that make the Rolex models that Rolex won't make. I have a Mercer Voyager II which is inspired by the explorer dial submariner with faux patina.Rolex won't release or re-release the 1016 or a 1016 dial submariner so other companies step up to fill that demand. Sandoz made a really good that looked a lot like the 1016.
I have a mido commander like in the vid but with out the day complication. Nice lil watch
West end watch is good too
I love my Orient "Daimond Dial President". I have it on the 'President" bracelet. It def scratches my grail itch while I'm saving for the actual Rolex President.
flipdog69xxx same brother, I have the og model in gold with the president bracelet until I can afford a real one.
You forgot Pagani! 🤣
The Seiko was trying to be the 69 Wittnauer day/date which was an homage to a Rolex as well. My dad has one, and the Mido Commander was also another one that also is been around since the late 60's. I have a Bulova Super Seville, also have the Orient President and an Oniss President all homages of the Rolex and they are great watches. Oh and Bulova did had a Submariner homage back in the 80's, it was swiss made with an ETA movement. Anyway do a search, you will find it. Anyway good luck!
Rolex is my favourite Seiko homage company.
Please make a video about cartier homages that you love
I have the sandoz tank cartier louise homage 30mm
The seiko tank homage is pretty solid.
You should resent all of the watches you just listed off.
Pay attention to this fact; the most impressive homages made by the most renowned brands are always difficult to find online. Baltic Tricompax Panda, Orient President, Bulova's Day-Date... The list goes on. People yearn for the design, but feel less guilty purchasing a knock-off so long as it still carries a respected brand's name on the dial. God forbid the piece comes from China though.
It's pretty shocking to me how void of self-awareness some individuals are.
I would not call the second Boluva a homage. There is some design inspiration there but being inspired by something doesn't mean you are coping someone. Great video
None rolex subs homages- cries in invicta
Hey Jory. What about the SNXJ series? They look pretty good too. The Surveyor looks amazing.
your information on Bulova states Quartz while it is clearly an automatic :)
How about Burei and Pagani Design? Also, unless you are a tiny person, a 36mm watch is just too small regardless if the original is that size.
I have the two-tone Bulova Super Seville with the diamond indices. I love it
There are couple Rolex homages I like (the list goes from best to ... okay):
1) Davosa (Ternos) (Swiss movement)
2) Mathey Tissot (not Tissot... Mathey Tissot is a company of its own) (Mathey III / Mathey Vintage) (Swiss movement)
3) Squale (Squale 300 GMT) (Swiss movement)
4) Glycine Combat (Swiss movement)
5) Debaufre (Ocean 1) -- this company is out of business (Swiss movement)
6) Tisell (Explorer / Automatic Diver) (Japanese movement)
7) Invicta (Pro Diver) (Swiss movement - rare / Japanese movement)
8) Orient (same model you mentioned in this video)
ROLEX COSMOGRAPH DAYTONA Rose Gold with Gradient Diamonds around bezel.
FOSSIL made a homage to this exact watch in two color ways - Rose gold & black. Name? Fossil Garret Chronograph Limited Edition
For someone who claims to know about watches, you forgot the Vintage Sandoz day-date.
As they say on the street, don't hate the player, hate the game. Buying a luxury watch has been gamed by ADs and New Jack dealers who entered into the watch business in the mid-2000's. These dealers with the help of the internet have jacked up the normal business of a true customer's enjoyment of buying a lifetime watch, in stepped the homage business to whet the appetite of the average working man to have a good working watch that has style.
Hey Jory! Casio does a Rolex ahmage as well! The MTP-1302D-7A2VDF and MTP-1302D-1A2VDF.
I love Casio and just picked these two up!
Would be dope to see a video of super dope and less known Casios like these and the Casio BESIDE!
Do all these have 2.5x magnification cyclops?
Great video! There is also an Orient ER20002D date just like with a beautiful blue dial.
Another similar style watch is the Casio day date, I fell in love with the brand and this watch.
Never heard of mido and then lately everyone is dropping videos with them in it. Interesting brand.
Oris seems to have made Rolex submariner homages but they are well executed and have their own character.
Yet at the same time I would like to add why can't they just make a watch that looks entirely different in the same aquis price point
Nice coverage Jory. Have yoy looked at Titoni Cosmo King?
Great content, as always!
Look at the Steinhart catalogue again. They don’t make all homages. They have their own designs and a mechanism.
Mondia makes a pretty good datejust homage. Swiss made with Sellita automatic movement. Getting one soon.
Very helpful video! What do you guys think about the Gevril West Village?
@The Time Teller In the realm of affordable Day-Date dress watches (say
Please check out Davaso. They make a beautiful Rolex Homage and also they have there own design. Great quality. P.S LOVE ME SOME PARNIS.
I would be curious what you might think of Gruen, which has made a LOT of Rolex homages.
Super Seville is going for $400+
Up to 900€ in Europa
@@m.grasman1086 that's equivalent to $1000? What about the gold one?
it's ashamed that Bulova don't make those anymore. They should bring them back.
HEY JORY! when are you gonna make a video about your HAMILTON KHAKI FIELD L.L. BEAN movement replacement?
Love the Mido, but hard to find. And because of this video the prices will probably go up!
Their selling a super seville in ebay. Looks new. Box included. For 1k.
White dial.
Should i go for it?
Steinhart has a few original design. The Lemans Chrono. Funky but cool. Some Hanhart cues but original.
Gevril make well made homages as well
Seiko SUP880 on a solid brown alligator strap if you enjoy the Tank but chose to put your money in other pieces!
Great video my man!
Ginault good one
Where is Tudor at on this list?
Damn that burn was sick. 🔥 🔥 🔥
Nathan Bellmann tudor = rolex
Did you say TUDLEX?
Diego Scognamiglio it was a joke
Tudor doesn't deserve to he on this list because it has an original looking watch.
Seiko SGF206 is prob the best day/date to pay hommage to a rolex presidential. You get the same gold tone, not 2 tone bs i like the gold on gold. Its hard to find but you can get it around $280us. Google it u wont be disappointed. Prob amazon have it cheaper.
One of my biggest regrets is DESTROYING my Orient Oyster on purpose because I was so pissed over the stones in the dial. I just pulvarized the thing into the pavement till it was no more. Still have the beaten case.
I had the white dial variant as well but got rid of it.
Great homage that was something like 10.5mm thick - great geometry. The hands were too short, but it wasn't a deal breaker. The bracelet was very high end, but didn't taper. Again, I was being so overly picky.
It DID NOT hold time well at all. I had two & both were amazingly, amazingly off. I've had - & have - tons of Seiko 5s & find them to be extremely reasonable despite people's complaints. The Orient Oyster was by far the worst time keeper I've had.
Those Seiko Varients are really ugly. Citizen haa a better looking vintage Quartz.
I have the Parnis President, a DJ hommage, on which I'll do a review soon. It's reasonable but quite flawed.
I would advise you seek anger management, & stop buying homages & go out & buy the real thing.
Bulova model 98C60 is very similar in look and function to the Rolex Presidential DayDate, but doesn't try to be an exact copy. It is also cheaper than the Super Seville and Surveyor. It's also no longer in production, so you'll have to find it used, NOS, or refurbished. Those regularly sell for under $90, used or refurbished. NOS will cost more, naturally. Probably in the $100-$120 range. It's quartz, naturally, not automatic, that's one of the reasons why they are so inexpensive. The bracelets are also made in China to keep costs down, but never fear, the movements are still quality Japanese pieces. If you're looking for a smoothly sweeping second hand, then you'll have to look elsewhere. Do you really expect to find that in a watch so cheap? I have a Precisionist Longwood that I paid $123 for, tax and shipping included, but that's about as cheap as a used Precisionist gets. You're not going to find that sweeping second hand for less money than that, but they don't make a Precisionist movement with the day of the week across the top of the face like a DayDate.
What about the Steinhart Ocean 2, that's not an homage?
The fonts on the Mido Commander are apalling. "FRIOAY". "commander" with each letter being on a different height...
I’m a fan of datejust, and parnis does a great homage watch.
Sandoz made a decent presidential homage and the Seiko sea urchin (sub homage) has been a very reliable watch
What about the Tudor Prince?
I have a Slava quartz (in house movement very nice too) where they tried to do a "homage", they kinda lost their way by a) using white with red details, b) slapped a massive red star and CCCP in the middle of the dial, c) bidirectional bezel with a white and red insert... oh and red painted arrowhead hands like a Mortima but not lumey Am waiting on a very very obscure Poljot "submariner", a very strange attempt where the tennis balls are on the hour and minute hand and just a standard second hand, the raised applied markers and a case very much in line with the Rolex but the bezel lets it down with a simple embossed raised thingy that looks totally out of whack with the watch and lacks the 12 triangle just having a pad printing of a triangle. I have a nice Sekonda "homage" which works very well except for the cream dial but has all the features of a subbie, an Avia one that looks good except is 3/4s the size and a cheapo Chinese auto called a Military Royale which isn't that bad and has a half decent bezel but NO lume on the markers but strangely on the pip... did they forget to lume the markers that day? It also has a very strange thing that the markers go down in size as it goes round the dial, the 11 marker is half a mm smaller than the 1 marker, tres weird.
One of my older watches is a very unusual Orient tristar crystal in a ornate rectangular case with a letterbox dial aperture, it is positively ancient and I suspect one of the earlier ones as even Orient haven't seen it in their archives nor has exhaustive googling revealed what this model is. It is my passion to collect the quirky, the unusual and the unloved and this fits right on in with the weird stuff I do have. Oldest is a non working 1910's Ingersoll pocket watch, well its not actually an Ingersoll but a very very early fake of one, sadly it is non runner due to all that poor thin brass workings but still an interesting prob original "homage" he uses the word loosely...
hi, I have a JULES JURGENSEN, a HELBROS, a GENEVE, a CARAVELLE, a DUFONTE, a GRUEN, a MICHAEL DAVID, a PULSAR, a RICOH, a TIMEX, a WESTCLOX, n a CITIZEN, all look like bulova super seville
What about J. Springs? They are basically Seiko and are automatic.
@thetimeteller, i got inspired by your video and bought a mido commander for what i thought was a pretty fair price for you saying they are a little harder to come by and find. I had a guy in one of my watch groups online warn about it being a replica, are there really replica models of these older mido commanders out there? i planned on getting it authenticated by a jeweler when it came in anyways, but is that really a big concern?
I love your content Jory but don't be a watch snob! 😀 Personally, I've got nothing against homages if they are well made. Brands like Steinhart (who also have original watches btw) give people with limited means the chance to own timepieces that they would never be able to own in their lifetime. If someone comes from a working class background, there is probably no chance he/she will get to own a watch like a Rolex MilSub for instance. Steinhart gives these people the opportunity to wear something close without them having to sell a kidney!
Squale! Never had their homage but I enjoyed the quality of their watches.
They put their name on the side of the watch case.. just like Invicta!!
No, absolutely no squale for me😂
You missed out the most obvious and best one, The citizen Automatic, there are loads of them about. Great movement and is definitely the sane man's Rolex alternative. Much better than any Orient.
