  • Today we return to bargain watch hunting with the discovery of a long lost gem completely made in Japan, for what might be the best Rolex Day-Date, Datejust, and Tudor Prince Date-Day alternative under $500. In this video I strike gold with an impressive automatic Japanese watch that not only presents good value on the vintage market, but boasts horological connections to Hamilton and Laco, and a seemingly forgotten story on an early innovator-and at one time, the second largest watchmaker after Seiko in the 1970s. Join me for an unboxing of a horological gem, with an up-close look at the origins of Ricoh and their Dynamic Wide 36mm Automatic aka the Japanese President watch.

Wow, I had no idea Ricoh made watches. What an incredible discovery! I'm a huge fan of Ricoh's cameras having owned multiple Pentax models and now a Ricoh GR III. What an amazing company history.

Absolutely, I had no idea either! I love Pentax, they trained us with K1000 at art school, so the brand connection means a little more to me too.

Great video as always TGV! I too love the look and elegance of a DateJust/Day-Date on a Jubilee/President bracelet. I bought a different affordable alternative, the Islander ISL-38, and I love it! It has many DateJust and SARB elements, but without being too close of a homage. Plus the quality/specs are great.

When I first saw the thumbnail, I had two possibilities in my head, either TGV's reviewing an Orient or an old Ricoh. I was 90% sure the Orient was it. But man, I would have never expected to see a Ricoh on this channel, I knew Ricoh watches from when I was starting to hunt for vintage watches. I could find them every once in a while here in Indonesia. They're all solid pieces that look great, with hand-winding movements and glass crystals. I saw a day-date model with an ice blue dial not too long ago.
Anyway, thank you very much, TGV for sharing about this wonderful watch brand.
    Cheers, onwards and upwards!

To be honest, Daydate is my most favourite styles of watches. I’ve recently bought a Cadisen Daydate 40 homage with green dial with Miyota 8285 movement. Costed me just over 100 dollars, has a sapphire crystal, hacking hand winding feature, runs pretty much 4-5 seconds slower. I’m okay with chinese manufactured watches. They are incredible value, extremely reliable and great for budget collectors

Fantastic video! I agree with your stance on homages, particularly for especially rare or no longer produced watches. I think the fact that you are open to owning a homage while also owning the original speaks to the fact that watch snobbery is only a secondary characteristic of highly insecure individuals. Great work as always, onwards and upwards!

Great review on one of my favorite Japanese watch brands! Ricoh watches were well known in some south-east Asia countries and it used to cooperate with a Taiwanese watch company called Telux to make watches with all parts provided by Ricoh. Hola: I have been collecting watches since the 50´s, I own a Ricoh with that Seiko inspired 18 000 usual movement and it is still working after all these years even suffering harsh shocks and -20 C in my engineering profession in the 60´s. I live in Argentina very near Chile and that model was pretty usual in Buenos Aires and Patagonia. Those Ricoh 18 000 movt were used well inside the 70´s. I collaborate with the oldest jewelers in Patagonia and they still have many NOS. From Ricohs to Omegas. Mille grazie!!!

Good video! It's always interesting to learn about companies that made watches that one wouldn't think made watches. This Ricoh watch is really cool. I too like homage watches. For those of us who cannot afford a Rolex President (even at MSRP), but would love to own one, finding an inexpensive facsimile is the only alternative. I always liked the Rolex President ever since I saw my uncle wearing when I was very young. He was head chef at a fancy restaurant and made good money. My dad liked it too, but totally couldn't afford one. My mom bought him a gold-plated Seiko quartz that he loved. Decades later, I managed to get my hands on a gold-plated Seiko automatic with fluted bezel and was lucky enough to find a president-style bracelet (also Seiko). It's the closest thing that I will ever get to a Roley. It's pretty awesome. I don't wear gold, but this Seiko so pimp-tastic.

I love midi and rado but I can't stand the new power matic 80 movements, they should give the customer a choice.

    • @daneconnelly
      @daneconnelly 2 года назад +1

@@luked2767 I don't know too much about the powermatic 80 movements. People seem to love them, but that could be just for the power reserve. Would you rather have a stock 2824?

    • @luked2767
      @luked2767 2 года назад

@@daneconnelly I would rather have the stock 2824 as its 28,800bph, the speed and beat error can be adjusted at home or by any local watchmaker, the microajustment screw for the speed is great.
With the powermatic 80 to adjust the speed you have 2 wheel weights and it becomes a watchmakers job, much more costly and hard to get just right, the beat error is welded or something in place at the factory so if you need that adjusted you need to get a whole new movement.
I like the idea of an upgraded 2824 with say a silicone or other better hairspring, better a balance made of better materials , more power reserve, a fix so when handwinding you don't get the rotor spin and such.
(ironicaly the Chinese clones don't seem to suffer from it as much)
But if I buy a modern Swiss auto I expect 28,800bph and the ability to get it regulated by a local watchmaker for cheap or a ajust it myself.
I can understand the allure of 80 hours but I'm sure they could have made it 60 to 80 while keeping it 28,800bph.
Many of the powermatic 80s don't even have a silicone hairspring so it's like buying a Japanese movement with more power reserve that you have to send to watch group to get adjusted and would probably cost a fortune.
The 2824-2 and clones are one of the most popular movements that most watchmakers can rectify a problem with.
      Powermatic 80 not so much.
If people want the 80 let them but I would take the standard 28,800boh 2824 any day over the 80 and the customer should be given the option.
I also dislike powermatic 80 on the Dial as the Swiss matic was awful.
It has now raised the price bar on the highstreet for people who want to buy a Swiss brand that has a 28,800bp movement.
Nothing is wrong with the 21600boh beat rate its a good middle ground but not commonly used on Swiss watches its more of a Japanese speed.
But they should at least give us the option.
Some of the more popular swatch group watches that used the 2824 and are now powermatic 80 fetch a premium.
The state of the market is so overpriced right now that I think the best Japanese brand for the money is Orient and I do prefer their movements over the entry seiko movements.
Also Glycine aslo has some great sales and you could get a nice combat sub or airman with a stellita GMT movement.
I've recently been finding myself buying more Chinese made watches with Japanese or Swiss movements, microbrsnds and vintage watches over most of the big name brands apart from orient as they are so overpriced.
I just nodded a Steel dive Sd1970 and replaced the dial with a Vietnam era seiko dial and for the 60 pounds I paid for the watch that has 200m, sapphire with AR, a ceramic bezel and NH35 and 5 pounds for a replacement dial, its one of the best value watches.
I bought enough vostok watches for under 25 pounds each to last a lifetime when the rouble sank to an all time low.
This hobby is becoming more and more expensive for big brand name watches as prices are rising so fast, seiko 5s are crazy money now.

Love the piece, TGV! Had never even heard of them making watches!! II only knew of them making electronics. I picked up a Long Island Watch ISL-39 as a Datejust/ Sarb type piece. With Marc's absolutely incredible quality and customer service, there was no question that I would be happy with it. It is absolutely lovely and I adore the quality Miyota movement. I have often tried to find a Day-Date, but other than Orients that aren't in production anymore it seems that no one makes such a piece Sad to see that Ricoh made such a cool piece and they can't be found easily today. This Ricoh looks exceptionally interesting though and a definite throw back! As it is new old stock, I wonder how hard it would be to find another one. What a remarkable find. Thanks for such a nice learning experience and a great video. Maybe you should do a pro-homage 5 reasons TO buy video and quiet all those anti-homage rumors. I would like to see a nice Japanese/swiss movement Panerai type piece. I think Marc has nailed the Datejust homage though. Regardless, fantastic job. Thank you again. Onward and upward, my friend.

the thing I love on this Ricoh daydate homage is the fluted bezel which is minutely so correctly angled as to give the real aura of the Rolex DD. Other Swiss (Bulova, Titoni etc) and Jap (Seiko, Citizen etc) homages fall short, even the top tier 4fig$ replicas! On them the bezel looks rough and garish bcos they didnt get the microscopic angles correct.

Truly enjoy your videos more than other watch geeks on you tube... you're not a watch snob which is great and your informative presentation helps your viewers understand the nuances of the industry. I have a couple burei datejust watches to fill the rolex fix...I do own one genuine 41 mm datejust blue dial the SS 126300 model but can't afford the tony soprano watch.
I have all gold burei 41mm on jubilee and the silver dial 41 mm on jubilee both have a NH35 and for $150 on amazon they are great quality... plus sapphire crystal to boot 👢 👌
Thank you and hugo for your entertaining videos

Congratulations on hitting half a million of subscribers, really an amazing achievement. Another alternative could be Orient president date or day/date, even they are pretty hard to get they are really nice and well made watches.

My dad's Omega Constellation (ca 1970) also had "quick set" date like that. Takes some getting used to to set the date and time.

I'm hoping you take a look at the Timex Q GMT, could be a great affordable way to scratch the GMT-Master itch.

What a great find! Awesome! I still have an old Gruen quartz two-tone day date I picked up at The Bon Marche back in the day (mid 1980s). Wore the crap out of it. Still works. But, not quite nice as that Ricoh... 🙃

I know this video is two years old, but I thought I'd revisit it as I just purchased (off the eBay) a Richo day date (37mm?) with a silver dial and leather strap for $162.00 AUD including postage; and I have to say I'm smitten 🥰
Thank you Mr TGV for getting inside my head..😆👍

Hi TGV, could you recommend an alternative to the Cartier de Santos? I'm trying to decide between the small, medium and large and would lke to find examples to see how they feel. Part of the problem is I don't live anywhere near a Cartier AD. Grazie mille!

Hi TGV , i would add to the options the citizen 7 eagle. The model with flute bazel and president bracelet in particular . I think it is an automatic beauty from the 80s and you can still find them at ridiculously low price. Take a look. Cheers

This is honestly quite a beautiful watch. If I didn't already have an islander of a similar style (minus the day complication) I'd probably look into this more.
