Watch companies have been homaging each other for decades, I might add the Swiss haven't done anything new in years, the Japanese on the other hand have been busy ie solar etc etc

    • @theurbangentry

👏👏👏👏 So true, so damn true. Thank you Kealan. A big difference I might add, when the Swiss innovate, it's some crazy insane tourbillon inside a tourbillon, inside another tourbillion, or a super thin watch that only a few with duck tales money can afford. When the Japanese innovate, it's usually more realistically obtainable, like spring drive, electrostatic movements, a more powerful new complication in a G-shock, or a some crazy thin eco-drive etc...
I don't think they are as obsessed with being "exclusive" and seen as ever more "haute horology" as the Swiss are. The Japanese brands seem to want more people to be able to have the super amazing tech, not less, and I respect that.
      Best regards,

San Martin apply to accept the challenge of participation. In watches of the same price, we are very confident in our own quality.
San Martin belongs to a micro brand. For "homage", we don't mean to copy a watch completely. Most watches will add our own ideas to make it a new homage. Especially for the quality of watches, our pursuit of quality is absolutely persistent. In many aspects, the finishing of case can even be compared with the mid-end watches of some luxury brands, which is our advantage. In China's watch factories, the case we use in this price range is definitely the top quality.
We are also making more original watches and accepting customized dial services. We are constantly improving our quality and service. Of course, as a service industry, it is impossible to make every customer 100% satisfied, but we will try our best to help every customer solve the problem.
We are making efforts to make San Maritn become an independent brand, making more people realize that China's watch manufacturing technology is developing rapidly, thus making more people recognize our Chinese watch brand.

With all due respect, saying that dealing with Ali express is not recommended, it not really true. I have had six transactions will Ali express, not all watches I might add, my experience has been very positive. You can communicate with sellers if you need and in most cases they reply very quickly. Perfect English too.
As for quality, it’s not a case of you get what you pay for. You get far more than what you pay for. Pagani design is great for the low tier price they ask. Sure they are not perfect but they are not crap either. Dealing with the likes of San Martin really step it up a couple of notches. They cost a fair bit more than the run of mill Ali brands but you are getting watches of exceptional quality.
Equal to or exceeding Steinhart at half the price.
Try it yourself. Give it a go then report the experience. 😊👌

I had an older Rolex Datejust for many years that I traded a firearm and $450. for many years ago. Loved the watch and got the chance to sell it before it needed servicing which was overdue. I use the 'green" Scotch-Brite and not the blue. The green perfectly mimics the brush look on the band and watch. Go in the same direction around the band as the orginal. On the shiny part of my case I had some light and and one deeper scratch. I used Flitz Polish and a Dremel with a "felt" bit . I know some people leave the natural wear and tear on watches, but for me this works great! I was told not to do it and I could ruin my watch. My friend and house builder had a badly scratched two tone Rolex Yacht-Master that he wore while working. He agreed, not hold me responsible knowing that it could decrease the vaule. The thing keeps time to within 2 or 3 seconds A MONTH without ever being serviced and will run for years.

As the gray market / 2nd hand price of an Explorer creeps up over 10k, I can't help but consider alternatives, like a Smiths Everest. WMT make some interesting pieces, certainly compelling visually, though I think for the dough I'll seek out a Bulova Super Seville or Ricoh like yours (I'm after day dates, if not the Explorer : Everest avenue). Each offers a bit more proverbial bang for the buck, I think, though none of them make an Oman dial! Talk about niche!

I have a Dan Henry 1970 (compressor style) and a San Martin (CPT Willard) which I got before Seiko decided to start reissuing their dive watch back catalogue. Both are excellent, with San Martin (Ali Express) being slightly better finish and quality (marginal). Anyway, a good homage is great especially if it brings watches into the range of mere mortals! Onwards and upwards TGV.

My current collection is practical. I have a bracelet Bulova chrono in a navy dial, a silver Bulova "tank" watch in white dial with leather band, and finally, my wife's graduation gift to me, a brown leather Hamilton tank, silver with white dial.
Your comments on Steinhart compelled me to glance at their webpage. Steinharts look NICE.
I'm new to your channel, and I've been watching a few videos, enough to notice that you're not a "tank" watch collector. Besides personal preference, is there anything I should know about my beloved tank watches?

Masterfully done, TGV! I am sure it is quite irritating that you must keep reiterating your stance on homage pieces, but I am glad to hear you again clarify not only your stance but the differentiation between levels of homage pieces. I was also equally happy to hear you again praise the Steinhart brand. So very very many watch snobs try to express disdain and derision for Steinhart pieces when they have NO idea what they are taking about! I have five Steinharts and they all are SUPREME pieces. I have put them through daily beatings, actually scuba dive with them, travel with the GMTs and wear them regularly. They keep excellent time and look remarkable. You WILL NOT find better bang for your buck ANYWHERE in the watch world…..period. ESPECIALLY if you are looking for a automatic Rolex homage. I have watches ranging from multiple thousand dollar pieces all the way down to $50 dollar Casios, and value for dollar Steinhart wins. Wins over Squale, Tudor, Orient and any other that I can think of. The only brand that comes close to value for money in my opinion is Certina due to their original designs and movements, but their finishing is probably not as high as Steinharts….think link screws vs pins. Anyway, highly highly highly recommend Steinhart. As for the WMT, I too have looked at them often, but I couldn’t pull the trigger on one because they cost nearly the same as a Steinhart but have a poor grade movement and I have never held one. They do look quite good though! They certainly have some different designs to chose from. When it came to me getting a DateJust homage , I went with, as you mentioned, @longislandwatch ISL39. It is exquisite. Miyota9015, movement and to date is one of the most comfortable watches I own. He doesn’t do gold tone I don’t think though. I went with Marc, because I have purchase from him before and I love what he is doing with his brand. Absolutely chuffed to bits with my Islander.
TGV, so good to see you well and doing what you do best. Excellent points, and tip top production! I am happy to see that as well as a birth year and a passion for life we also share a joy in confounding and irritating watch snobs. Be well, my friend! Wear what you love! Onward and upward!

I have one of their watches which is a near 1-1 homage to the Milgauss 6541 (my favorite Rolex reference) which in reality would cost over a quarter of a million dollars and would be too fragile to wear. I absolutely love it, and wear it joyfully all the time. The quality is great for $500, and is much better than buying a fake which is the only way I would ever get this design on my wrist. I have no qualms about the WMT on the dial; on the contrary, what could be more of a representation of one’s true enthusiasm than wearing an homage to an obscure reference while refusing to defile their wrist with a fake?

    Hi,
You have my vote. I love 36mm watches and don’t understand why more watchmakers are not focusing on them. There is certainly a demand as noted by the frenzy, for example, when Timefactors release their Smiths watches on line and they sell out within minutes. I managed to acquire two after a number of unsuccessful attempts.
Bye the way, great and informative videos, as usual. 👍

  • @THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR

The more I delve deeper into watches the more I respect original design. A design that has taken inspiration of a watch or a brand and turned it into there own thing . Case in point a Khaki King we all know is a great alternative to an Explorer and it has brand history. Brands that profit and piggy back off the back of another brands success I’m not a fan of! This is coming from my songwriting background mainly! Beatles Yesterday will never be done better than original. However Hendrix’s All along the Watch Tower??? Inspiration from Dylan and turned it into a far better song!

    • @GinkgoJoe

    • @Greyknight308
      @Greyknight308 2 года назад +2

I have to completely disagree, first off the Khaki King takes zero inspiration from the Explorer, the two may have similarities in some basic design aesthetics but are so vastly different. Hamilton is drawing from their long history of making field watches and are in no way trying to mimic Rolex. They are simply different watches that both fit the same function which is why they are so commonly compared. When it comes to music, I overall think it's a terrible analogy that ultimately isn't comparable to watches or any other luxury goods. You can personally enjoy any song in existence with a few clicks of a mouse, the same can not be said about physically enjoying a sought after watch. A $5k, $10k, or $20k+ watch is something many people can not even remotely consider outside of their wildest fantasies. Telling them they shouldn't enjoy a substitute that fits their lifestyle is silly gatekeeping.

Regarding the point made about upkeep being a part of the overall cost of ownership, I recently had a 1960's Mido Multifort Powerwind serviced for $195. When I picked it up, a lady was there picking up a Rolex that I clearly overheard was a service (not a repair). The charge was $795. Never having owned a Rolex, that was an eye-opener for me.

After getting my rolex stolen i decided to get an invicta pro diver. Best decision ever. Gets more compliments than when i had the rolex, keeps time perfectly (quite surprised), got no scratches although i wear it for everything including snorkeling (also surprised), and if i get robbed i can just buy another one.
Also fun story: i've had it for almost 2 years but it's my second invicta, as the first one i got mugged from it after only a couple weeks of getting it. Saved my life, i had some very old family jewelery on myself plus wallet and everything and they were happy with the watch as they probably thought it was a Rolex. I let them take it with a smile also saved me from putting up a fight and risking my life as they were 3 vs 1 and probably had knives.

When I think about hommage watches as a possible starting point for the hobby I realize how much my taste has changed over the years since I started collecting.
