    Social media has definitely cheapened the experience of enjoying what you have. You get robbed out of the joy of falling in love with your watch because you're constantly being told that you need something else. The right watch will find you if you just give it time ironically. Great and relevant content as always.

      That’s only true if you actually pay attention to what social media tells you! I personally don’t give a shit about it. I buy the watches that I like and I buy them for myself and not to please anyone else. I also don’t fall victim to what the “in- crowd” thinks I should have. Lastly, all those posers buy the hype watches only so they can show off and they’re stupid enough to pay massively inflated prices for it.
      In other words, stop caring about what the people that are of no value to you say or think and start doing you! 🙂

      While I partially agree with you, I believe that social media had a tremendously positive impact on the watch community. Mainly by making the hobby more attainable, understandable for masses. It allowed tons of watch enthusiasts around the world to connect, share, educate each other and help with developing interest and taste in watches. Thanks to social media I learned so much about movements, modding, fixing watches. Learned and bought the brands and models I would've never known otherwise. Found friends and fellow watch nerds. Saw hilarious dramas unfold. All in all it's not the social media itself but the way we use it and allow it to influence us. I love to consume RUclips, reddit, WUS, Watchcrunch and many other resources, but I never really buy anything solely based on what I see there. Take TGV - I frequently disagree with him and certainly don't share his taste in watches, but I do enjoy his content.

    Because of TGV, and this channel, I bought my first automatic timepiece (Seiko SARB 035), and now I also have the Seiko SKN809 and the mighty Flighty. My next target is the Hamilton Khaki Field automatic. But one of the best of his recommendations was the Casio DW5600. Absolutely love this watch.

    Completely agree that seeing a watch in the flesh is essential if you intend to actually wear it. I bought a rose gold flyback chronograph online and when it arrived I hated how it sat on my wrist and immediately returned it. I also absolutely loved the Tudor BB58 but decided to go to a dealer to try it on before buying, and I'm so glad I did because it looked like a child's toy on my wrist. The opposite can also be true; while I was in a jewellers one day I asked to try on a white dialled Omega Seamaster Professional, a watch I've always thought looked awkward and ungainly, but when I saw it on my wrist I fell in love. I have never seen any watch suit any wrist as well as that Seamaster suited mine.
    TL;dr always try a watch on before committing to buying it

    I know my limit TGV, which is about 500 quid. The Baltic Aquascaphe will fit that. Thanks for mentioning the Bambino, a watch that I do own. I love your inclusivity on the scale of Casio to Cartier and now I know I can save for the absolute grail watch if I can break the psychological 500 quid barrier. As always an education, this presentation was much needed. ✌️

      The problem is that there’s so many cool pieces for 500-1k. I get impatient trying to save up and always come across another 600$ one I “need” lmao. Then I have start the watch savings piggy bank all over again hahaha.

    • @wallythacker7772
      @wallythacker7772 2 года назад +1

      This does bring up the 100 good watches vs 1 AWESOME watch collector’s conundrum. Modern manufacturing and CAD have allowed many talented watch designers with a vision to turn out some awesome pieces that aren’t breaking the bank. If a watch as rugged and “functionally beautiful” as a marathon was produced in 1960 and sold at the same price as a Patek customers would say it was worth more money than the hand built slightly imperfect Nautilus. Nowadays manufacturers have all but perfected mass production and need in house hand made pieces to ask outrageous sums for or the pricing seems absolutely absurd. Does that mean that the Nautilus is going to function better than the GSAR? Not at all, they serve the same purpose and if we were comparing them side by side, apples to apples like a steel diver vs a steel diver, in the real world, one might be ever so slightly better at performing its duties than the other but is that tiny difference worth a 90,000$ premium? Lol hell no!
      Enthusiasts like us place more value on them as jewelry because we don’t necessarily need a watch. If your life absolutely depended on your timepiece would you rather be wearing an FP Journe or a Casio? Exactly lol. I’m willing to bet that if you took any individuals collection of ten 1000k watches and stuck them in a closet with someone else’s collection of ten 1,000,000$ watches and opened that closet 100 years later that the “cheap” pieces won’t have just turned to dust because they weren’t expensive. There are very few valid reasons for buying expensive vs good that I can think of, maybe appreciation as an investment instead of for wearing pleasure? Point is just because something is expensive doesn’t mean it’s that much better, and just because something is good doesn’t mean it needs to be expensive. I can buy any watch I want. Seriously. No watch is out of my reach. I have been blessed/lucky to have picked some good investments at the right time. I wear a Tudor BB58 every single day and it makes me as happy if not more so than my neighbor who wears a different rose gold Rolex every day of the week simply because they were costly. Don’t buy into the madness!!

    10 year ago I quit buying watches that cost more than $50 because I had lost (or had stolen, in the case of my JeanRichard) every watch I had ever owned. Recently found your channel and rediscovered my Love for watches. I wanted to thank you for talking about replicas. I didn't even consider the negative impacts, and so didn't hesitate to buy fake watches, but since then I have found quite a few lower level watches that I genuinely Love. My Casio MTP-4700 that I got for $6 is one of my favorites now, and as much as I like my Submariner and can appreciate it, I don't ever have any occasion where it feels appropriate to wear it.

    Another great video! I certainly agree with all your points! I'd say one more category to avoid is vintage watches without a plan for servicing or repair. I've been burned so many times because a vintage watch I initially thought was in good shape suddenly died on me. A good plan is to always assume vintage watches are unserviced so that you can pay accordingly and have a good watchmaker ready to help

      I agree! My first proper watch, bought a year ago, was a 1969 Omega Seamaster Cosmic. Although it at a very reasonable cost I discovered after servicing it that it wouldn't be practical as a daily wearer. I now wear it around the house and love it, but I had to buy another watch to wear outdoors - especially when it's raining!

    Great video. I fell into all of the traps you mentioned, except counterfeit watches, over the past ten years. Two years ago I decided to step back from the flipping frenzy and focus on a single brand - Sinn. There is one authorized dealer in the US - WatchBuys. No worries about counterfeits or grey market watches. I have two, a 857 and a UX. I am the sole owner and know everything about these watches - how they’ve been treatet, service history, etc.. No, they’re not Rolexes or Omegas but I REALLY love my German watches and they are tough as heck!

      I recently made an impulse purchase of a 1965 Vulcain watch from Switzerland. Seller had a good reputation from buyers and stated the watch was in working order. The price was low so I purchased it. Got it and the photos were spot on, in fact it looked better than shown. However, when I put it on, after about 30 minutes it was running really fast. I did some online investigating and found several reasons it could run fast. I decided against returning it and take a chance it can be fixed. If not, it's a beautiful reminder of what can happen when making an impulse buy.

    Most high-end watch images in ads or even on websites (Omega and Rolex, for example) are not photos of the watch, but computer generated images of the watch. That is why you have to go see them in person. Years ago I was planning on getting a silver dial Speedmaster until I saw it in person and decided I liked the black dial one better.

I just wanted to give you some constructive criticism: Since you like to create longer videos with several segments you should look into adding timestamps in your videos - that way if a viewer looks for information on one specific watch/subject he can easily skip to it. Especially in your really long videos (podcasts) that would be a nice addition.
    Apart from that i absolutely love that you add a lot of history and personal experience to your videos instead of just keeping it short.

Also, a couple of their Rolex homages I would actually consider buying, one of them a replica of a vintage Rolex that hasn't been produced for several decades, and another a Rolex-style watch in a color that Rolex never made. For those reasons, I think these 2 would be quite acceptable.

    I wouldn’t consider myself a serious watch collector, but I wound up (intended) with quite a few by being a junk hunter. Thrift stores, garage sales and pawn shops have allowed me to fuel this habit without costing an arm and a leg. The adrenaline rush of finding a nice piece for pennies on eBay prices is what keeps me looking, and satisfies my need for something different. Winding a $3, 1970s Timex, and seeing the second hand take off always makes me happy.

    So true on replica watches. It's amazing the amount of homages you can get that look pretty darn close to the originals, but without any of the faking or counterfeiting or criminal activity going on. They're not even that expensive, which is perfect if you want to "try out" a style of watch, like the Submariner, before getting something more expensive!

    • @vianouche1
      @vianouche1 2 года назад +1

      @ChfHappySack 2 года назад +1

      @@vianouche1 Many watches are in the thousands of dollars. Obviously you know this. Not many people can afford a watch like that. Example being the submariner. Now obviously the much cheaper ones like Invicta isn't a Rolex, but it's the next best thing for $70 compared to 4-5 thousand dollars. As a consumer, it's the company's job to win me over. If another competitor can make something similar for much cheaper and of good quality then I'm gunna go for it. It doesn't matter if Rolex made it first. It's their job to convince me that the price they're asking is worth it. There's much more important things I'd spend 5k on before I buy 1 watch. Anyone who argues this is just a watch snob.

    Great video as always. You touched on this but I would avoid a watch solely based on brand of it doesn’t speak to you. That is why the grey market is thriving. Too many people caring more about the name or logo on the watch than the piece itself. We are all guilty of not wanting to step down a notch after hitting a certain milestone/level on products. I play guitar and can certain confirm that playing a $2000 guitar doesn’t make you better than when playing a $500 guitar. Same goes with watches. Appreciate the time piece for what it is and you can’t go wrong.

    • @giusepperocchi2979
      @giusepperocchi2979 2 года назад +2

      The guitar comparison doesn’t make sense. The reason for buying a better guitar is not to make you a better guitarist, but to have something that sounds better, feels better and is nicer to play. Same with watches, a good one doesn’t tell time better than a cheap Casio but it’s much more satisfying to look at, to touch, to keep on the wrist.

Ward Trident, so I've bought it because of better finishing, sapphire, less loud movement. Now I regret not pulling a trigger for Lorier. I agree with this list. My idea of the FIRST type of watch to avoid is the watch you cannot responsibly afford. I have some respectable legacy pieces (Omega, mostly) that are very much out of my price range, but I inherited them.
    My attitude before buying a watch is to ask myself: 1) What environment or under what conditions will you be using the watch? The conditions for an auto mechanic are different than the conditions for an accountant.
    2) What do you want the watch to do for you? (What complications are necessary or desired?)
    3) What type of movement is desired (mechanical or quartz)?
    4) What is the price limit?
    When I think like that, I don’t overspend and I enjoy the watches that I get.
    I also agree that seeing an Apple Watch with a suit is like seeing a man wear sneakers with a suit. How many of us have seen that? It just takes the whole image down several levels.

Paying used at the same price as new, that doesn't make any sense, at least not to me.

    Great content, TGV. I've made one or two impulse buys, but none at a high price. The way to deal with such a watch is to wear it in your "rotation" until it grows on you or doesn't, then if the latter consider what to do with it. Chances are the reason you bought it in the first place will re-assert itself as you wear it. If one buys a $450 watch on the grey market for $300 or a $300 watch for $170, the risk is quite low and the value is quite high. As far as keeping up, I just think of every social media "influencer" as an actor on a stage whose real characteristics I cannot know. What to do with a fake watches is easy: report the seller to the proper authorities. The one fake (a really bad fake) I've knowingly encountered came to me as a gift from a friend who acquired it in the same way and who knew it was a fake. It will always remain in my private collection -- and never worn in public -- as a reminder to me that this hobby can have its nefarious side.

I have one beautiful Hamilton that I like the design, but just can't get myself to wear it as it's a 40-41mm and lit looks huge on my wrist. The advice about waiting before buying a watch to make sure it's not a passing interest has been so true for me. Looking at all the watches I have sold/don't wear very often, I bought beause they were bargains or very quickly convinced myself I wanted. Conversely, the more expensive ones I wear frequently and have no intention of selling I spent a good while looking at, the Ball Pioneer I have was over 12 months waiting for a good price.
    In terms of fake watches, liars, criminals etc - what you see/they admit to is ALWAYS the tip of the iceberg. The type that knowingly buys fake anything is probably the type that does a number of other things and the same goes for the people who make or handle them. It would be no surprise that these people are involved in other crime.

    I buy watches that attract my eye. My latest purchase was a Pulsar quartz solar field watch. I first saw it on a online jeweler's catalog. I went to check it out. It had a beautiful deep blue dial, Large lime green Arabic numerals 1 -12 around the dial with smaller 13 -24 next to the the larger numbers . The two colors complement each other. The only complication is a date window. The Nato strap is a deep blue, and very comfortable to wear on the wrist. You buy watches that you like, and not what others tell you what to buy.

    What do you or anyone think of the Wempe Iron walker blue dial.. seems solid and I’m getting it from the NYC location.. tried it on a few weeks ago.. can’t get it out of my mind so I’m getting it… and I’m a steel worker so it seems on point for me…!!!

    Ooh...I see a blue carbon Squale on that winder. I'm seriously in love with that watch and the red. Great video as always Fratello!

      Haha, that is actually the one you wore 😂😂🙏 You should go for it, it suits you. You know you want to. So glad to see you in the comments btw, I was watching your Alpha Papa commentary today (for the 3rd time, should I admit that?!?) while editing. One of the best ones IMO. I hope the family is all well.
      Sending a grande abbraccio, stay well fratello! 😎🥂

    Thx TGV !!! I bought a giant G-shock Mudmaster GWG-2000 and was afraid of what others thought, but I love it and it makes me smile everyday I wear it ! It is my standout fun, weird looking watch!

    These videos are awesome, it would be really helpful if you did chapters on these like some of the other watch you tubers, it makes it easier to dart round the points and re watch specific parts that resonate with the viewer :)

    Great review! I purchased my BB58 5 months ago after waiting 2 years . I first saw it on leather, but I wanted steel. I knew I had to have it but I can only get it on leather and I didn’t want to settle based on the hype. 2 years later my AD had one on steel and I bought it. It’s one of my favorites and I’m very comfortable knowing it wasn’t an impulse lust buy, but rather, true love.

    First time seeing your content. Pretty cool. I was also thinking "This guy should have grown in an Italian family" until the confirmation at 8:26 😁.

    I have a single Rolex GMT Master Batgirl that I bought at MSRP and have worn it maybe 10 times. Not because I am afraid of scratching it or getting robbed but I just don’t enjoy watches anymore. Honestly I thought I would like it more than I do, but now it just collects dust. I wear my apple watch every day though and it has far more utility and function.

    Another amazing video, TGV! You should do a video comparing your most affordable watch against your most expensive one.

      Now that is a really cool idea. I will note that down.
      Thank you my friend.
