The worst of 2024 goes to Patek with the Cubitus. Not only a extremely uninspired design, but also eternally connected to that god awefull PR statement.
Really a shame. It’s one of those things (which you see examples of in all industries) where the thing itself is fine - even great - if it existed in a vacuum. It’s a shame as it could’ve been fully, or at least partially avoided.
I would disagree after seeing it in person. Will it go down as a top 5 Patek of all time? Probably not, but given the perverse cyclical nature of watch culture, I’m sure in 2050 there will be some weird run for 2024 Cubituses. I sincerely think the outcry for the watch has more to do with the CEO and his off base remarks.
When you try it on, it’s Better than pictures. However, it will get some time before one can appreciate it. I think similar to code, subsequent models will have better variations on the watch
Victorinox have some great models but they unfortunately are too well known for the department store stuff they also sell. This one looks good and serious.
That Seiko is a gem. I'm convinced one can spend a lifetime exploring and discovering/rediscovering amazing Seikos. No wonder there are some who only wear Seiko
Check out the Seiko UTD someday. One of the best value 4 money watches on the market in my opinion. Its a ultra-thin dress watch, that usually sells around 1000 USD, but is thinner than its swiss competition that costs 5 times as much!
The design aesthetic of the Japanese can swing from totally constrained conservatism and conformity......to unique and original avant garde beauty. I think that is why your sentiment resonates so true. Some of Seiko and Citizen designs are so original and groundbreaking that they would never come from the minds of European brands.
@@wngimageanddesign9546 There's one thing I like about those mose expensive Seikos which is that they sometimes make models using techniques from traditional Japanese decorative arts. You get to see beautiful and original watches but also enjoy an aspect of Japanese culture.
🤣🤣🤣 The underhanded insult did not escape me! Thank you Danny. @@theurbangentry I was just having a little harmless fun with you - I actually think your Hugo segments are some of the funniest moments I've seen on RUclips. Cheers and Happy Holidays, my friend :)
Underdog makes some of the most interesting visual designs, and from what I've heard they are quality pieces too. Tho not cheap, I myself love the pizza design. Really pops out from the masses and makes you wonder why no one has done it earlier - pizza Panerai anyone? Not for snobs and serious people for sure. I would wear one with a suit anywhere no problem - to show that I don't take life or myself too seriously. As for the pineapple, well can't comment much since I am not Italian, but I can imagine that A LOT of people can and enjoy it as a topping. But they did another more traditional ingredients as well?
I like Studio Underdog’s Watermelon design. I’ve worn it and found it cute. And I appreciate the company’s aesthetic, sense of humor, and clever design sense. But they’ve never spoken to me where I’ve felt the need to overspend on what is essentially a Chinese-made watch with a Chinese movement. No offense meant to those who have. They’re just not for me, personally speaking. But that’s the beauty of the hobby. There’s always something for anyone. Cheers and Happy New Year!
Just chiming in about the Bulova Seville. My wife bought me the green dial version as an early Xmas gift a few days ago, and it is excellent across the board. Great size, great finishing…and the sweep of the movement rivals my GS spring drive.
You know TGV, I unfortunately had to sell a couple of nice watches I had for financial reasons. It is very hard to let go of something you love because you have to… To the point that now my passion for watches has taken a bit hit. I’m a bit numb now. Stuck to my trusted Mudmaster - this one seems to be eager to see me through my grave. Great work as usual my friend!
It’s just stuff man, if you needed to sell things off to get back on your feet it’s always better to remember why we collect. Not what price points we collect. You’ll be back soon man and get back the watches you bought. I’m saying this because I’m also losing my job and also have to sell other collectibles like my warhammer 40k and sports cards. It sucks. But I rather sell that than my watches for now. It’s a struggle out there
Great content. Love these top ten lists! Reminds me of early days of the gentry! Is there a Spotify Urban Gentry Playlist? The music selection is always on point. Thank you TGV!
I recently picked up the green Super Seville. What a fantastic watch. The only minor downside I see is that as a ‘sports’ watch, 30m WR in the modern age is a bit low. Should be at least 50m. Otherwise, I absolutely love it. Thanks for another great year TGV!
Ah jeez Dennison making a comeback out of nowhere. I got one by accident a few years ago, when I inherited a dennison cased waltham hunter from 1905. By the standards of the day, it would be considered low to mid tier, but the fit and finish is incredible, and holding up very nicely almost 120 years later. The movement is astonishingly beautiful, and it keeps better time than some automatic seikos I've owned that were a tiny fraction of its age. Really shows the level of dedication and the skill required to be a watch factory line worker back then. Keeper for sure.
Disagree with the Studio Underd0g pick. You can't take them too seriously. It is about whimsy and a great mechanical chrono at a great price. I'll suggest the Studio Underd0g slot be occupied by the ridiculous Tag Formula 1 x Kith series that came out this year. That was nothing but a cash grab of little value and a confusing reversal of direction for a brand that looked like it had turned a corner and was heading in a positive direction.
Although the kith and tag collab was dog shit. Studio underdog seem to either pay off or just aren’t a serious brand either. Too expensive if you go on a sun vacation anf want to use it 😊
Hey, lighten up, the whole idea of Studio Underd0g is to shake up the stuffy watch world and inject some fun. I think they pushed the way for all those colourful watches this year and the Rolex abominations that came out with jelly beans or whatever they were. It's meant to be light-heated. I recall trying to explain to my grandmother back in the 90s about some folks now putting pineapple on pizza lol she said just stay away from them who knows what else they are capable of
My best of 2024 goes to the Lederer Triple Observatory Chronometer. It achieved a avarage accuracy of 0.5 seconds a day across 5 positions in all 3 tests. A incredible feat of mechanical engineering.
At 17:52 you mention that we've heard all of this before. I haven't, and I'm curious if you could make a playlist where you discuss the deeper histories of these companies. I know you do that in pretty much every video, but maybe you could choose the ones that are most interesting/important historical subject matter? Those 15 minute history lessons are easily my favourite parts of your videos and I enjoy rewatching them.
Hi T, I got hands on with the full Dennison range at WatchPro in London last month. I can confirm that they're absolutely brilliant. Everything from the hands to the supplied strap. I'll be picking one up in 2025 no doubt 🙏 Stay well, boss!
I'm impressed to see Victorinox and Alpina in list of the best of the year, and the list of the worst is quite amazing, you had me laughing, onwards and upwards, TGV!
Great and very interesting picks for this year, TGV. I absolutely love the Aquasphere! Not to mention the 77 and King Seiko, all are potential grails for me! Love the lobotomised line 😂 for the Patek etc. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful Christmas! 🥂
Great video TGV. I had the Squale Master because I thought they'd NEVER make a new clasp for it. Joke was on me and hat's off to them for doing so. Appreciate the honest and insightful content as always!
Great list - the super seville, the vertex, and the KSK are total hits for me. Really looking forward to your review of the Vertex, and count my vote for a review of the KSK, too! The bracelet on that one looks incredible. We only disagree on Hanhart - certainly not about their killer new diver, but about the Preventor - it's the only thing keeping the Vertex from being my clear number 1 for the year and is absolutely on my own year end list. While I appreciate your journalistic integrity in not including it, good grief is it a fantastic release from that brand.
13:37 I really like that Bulova Super Seville. A clean, neat design, a handy and easy to read date complication, one of the most accurate movements _full stop,_ a dab of of lume, a long "power reserve" on account of being a quartz movement and a sweeping seconds hand? Not just cool: Ice cold.🥶 All it's missing is a water resistance rating of at least 50m.
Absolutely love my preventor. It's brilliantly well regulated, looks beautiful, and is tough enough for anything. Definitely will be getting more Hanharts, but probably start with some of their classics.
Imagine behind the scenes video of Tristano recording the Hugo lines :D Or someone has to put the Hugo voice over Tristano speaking ;D It would be so good!
Hanhart HD12 on the wrist. Easily my favorite watch in the current rotation. Amazing watch on the bund. Why is it not being reviewed more. Blows away the white dial Murph.
👏👏👏👏 Good for you sir! I don't think Hanhart play the whole "pay to play" watch media game that I have made several videos about. But on the bright side, it makes it more special for those of us "in the know" 😉🙏 Enjoy your Hanhart, it makes me profoundly happy to hear from another owner. Best regards, TGV
@ I am going to put it through its paces on a Cape buffalo hunt followed by a Red Stag hunt early next year. It needs some actual field time and a few wrist shots for the memories.
Oh man, I just switched on the Italian version that YT automatically does as I clicked on your video and I heard you saying "il mio Universale Ombra Bianca" 🤣😂
👏👏👏 Now that is pure class. A true enthusiast, thank you. So true what you say, I might investigate their "heritage" offerings, so well done and overlooked like you say. Best regards, TGV
Awesome video content and production quality-again. So much going on here. Born and raised in Queens I am partial to Bulova and glad to see their resurgence; as a Seikopath I have several JDM models but still lust after the models with the 6L and 8L models which these King Seikos have and finally I am getting more into German watches after purchasing my Sinn 104 and am loving the Hanhardt as they are quality pieces not seen on every wrist which I appreciate. Grande!
I’m definitely checking these Hanharts out. Just beautiful with a good history. In the cheaper range I found Timex to be quite refreshing in 2024. Watch out Casio!
I had a Victorinox with an ETA movement for 15 years; just sold it in June. Never serviced, never babied, and never a problem from it. It was a stunningly well made watch. It was always just a hair too big for me.
Hi TGV, I’ve used to watch your videos several years ago. You really got me into watches in my early twenties. I’ve recently got back into the hobby, and I’m glad to see your channel is high and flying. Your production quality is top notch and you have a way with words that so few creatives can come near. I remember buying my skx013 after seeing your passion for your skx007. I then followed up that purchase with numerous other Seikos! I’m getting married soon, and I’m looking to buy myself a watch to commemorate this moment, amongst some achievements I’m proud of. Being small wristed and having a modest budget, I wanted to get your opinion on which new watch I should buy? I really do want to buy NEW. I’ve narrowed it down to the explorer 36mm and the black bay 54. I understand that both are absolutely different watches in every sense. But for multiple reasons, I’m drawn to both and they both make absolute sense to me. I wanted your input should you see this message. Even if you have any other suggestions, I would love to hear them! I love divers. But I’ve always dreamed of owning a Rolex - never the Explorer, mind you! I want to keep this watch forever in my collection. A collection which I may not add to for a long time. Have a wonderful week ahead! Thanks for reading my long message :)
TGV, Merry Christmas!! I 've been watching your show now for nearly 8 years, my love of horology started (coincidentally perhaps?!) around the same time I was introduced to your channel by an old colleague. My favourite episodes have always been your audience collection reviews, I love seeing people from different walks of life and different tastes (and budgets!) show off not only their pieces, but their love for those pieces and the stories behind them. I've never felt I had enough of a "collection" to contribute, but after finally acquiring my latest addition (no spoilers!) I now feel I have what I can proudly call an eclectic collection and would love to share!! (I edited as I called you TWG - my favourite tea makers in the world, check them out, but sorry I meant TGV of course 😣)
Damn you, TGV. After bloody weeks of deliberation between the Hanhart Aquasphere and the Blue Pelagos 42, and having settled on the Tudor, you go and do this.
Great video, once again. A nice cross-section of great watches. My favorite from your video is definitely the Hanhart Aquasphere. I have it myself and wore it for many days until it was replaced on my wrist by a new Squale. As a Squale fan, you should definitely take a look at this one: the Squale X Chronofactum 1521 UCB, released just a few days ago. For me personally, it's the most beautiful Squale yet. I opted for the NoDate version and have been wearing it ever since. A really beautiful watch, clear and unagitated and reminds me a little of a rarely encountered legend.
This didn’t even pop in my sub box I’m currently watching now. Thanks again for TGV for another video! I just ordered my first islander can’t wait to get it in and am gonna put it through its paces going hunting in a few weeks
Good morning TGV, love your selection, best and worst. Agree with the Aquasphere holding the topspot. I mean, what is not to like? Looks like a serious toolwatch at a great price point. Best regards!
That Vertex is super sharp. Also, I must admit, I like the gold Deepsea. Way out of my price range, but yeah, if I had that kind of money, I'd gladly buy and wear one.
Since my most recent buy was a BB Chrono S&G (but on a black nato not a nasty S&G bracelet) I have to disagree on the BB Chrono hate. I mean I am not saying that the pink couldnt be a bit more pink, a bit more "Bold" as Tudor markets their watches, but cmon the BB Chrono is one of the best looking chronos out there and wears actually better than expected. I am really in love with mine - my other watches hate me for it :)
I have a Dennison - stunning design - amazing to get that design and a stone dial for £600. Checked them out in person and really struggled to choose between tigers eye and malachite. Went for the dynamism of the tigers eye.
About Studio Underdog...... "They've got be joking"..... You said it and you got it right at last. I wouldn't buy the pizza dials but many have. They're also only available as a takeaway at certain watch events which again shows a sense of humour. This brand doesn't take itself too seriously and I like that. They have become over hyped sure, but they were born out of one man's frustration at having nothing to do during the pandemic lockdowns, and with zero financial backing beyond crowd funding. To be applauded, surely?? Nice to see Dennison back in the game but this watch is not for me and it's a long way from the vintage watches the name brings to mind. Vertex is a great rebirth but they are not cheap. I bought the Hanhart flyback chrono. The brand is seriously underrated. Interesting video.
A great list and you make a perfect argument for each TGV. I’ll defend the Cubitus though. The fact that they designed something that wasn’t for the masses speaks volumes. It’s brave, it’s very Jaguar.
Huge fan of Alpina. Hope the Citizen ownership will prop the brand up. Hanhart is on a roll. Love all their new references. The pink Tudor gave me instant indigestion as soon as I saw it. The Pizza watches make me want to regurgitate. As usual Tristano, we share very similar tastes in watches. Thank you for your work!
I have a blue Super Seville and although I didn't understand a word you said about it I agree entirely 🤣 This watch is beautiful, elegant, affordable and so accurate. Who needs a Rolex?
@@theurbangentryThe pizza watch was announced on April 1, 2023, and Richard Benc (the owner of Studio UnderdOg) assumed everyone would realize it was an April Fools' joke, and that he had no intention of actually producing any. But then a whole bunch of people took it seriously and wanted it, so Richard made some and sold them only at Windup Watch Fairs. So, I'm not sure you're being fair to him and Studio Underd0g. The Urban Gentry for next Austin Powers villain!!!
Your worst 10 was a dry hilarious roast. Well done!
As always educational as well as entertaining! Nearly every watch here is above my means but I love to see what others are buying.
13:37 I really like that Bulova Super Seville. A clean, neat design, a handy and easy to read date complication, one of the most accurate movements _full stop,_ a dab of of lume, a long "power reserve" on account of being a quartz movement and a sweeping seconds hand? Not just cool: Ice cold.🥶
All it's missing is a water resistance rating of at least 50m.
I love this video... look at this travesty of the senses! Keep up the brilliant creativity and insightful commentary!
I find the Lorier Olympia stunning in the metal. Was a no brainer purchase after I saw your review
YESSSSSSS!!! They would be number 12 for me if this was a top 20.
So glad youragree.
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
Absolutely love my preventor. It's brilliantly well regulated, looks beautiful, and is tough enough for anything. Definitely will be getting more Hanharts, but probably start with some of their classics.
I like Vagabond as a name. I guess it depends how you relate to the term.
Great again, TGV. Always a pleasure to watch your show.
Best regards,
TGV
@ I am going to put it through its paces on a Cape buffalo hunt followed by a Red Stag hunt early next year. It needs some actual field time and a few wrist shots for the memories.
Kudos for not just mentoning "watch types" but speciffic watches for the Worst category, didn't expect it.
Chanel's "patronizing degeneracy." The whole line was hilarious, delivery was perfect too. 🤣🤣
ritsard Miele ? turtle neck together with talk about taste? half baked italian ? all this in one episode? amazing
Apologies, English is not my first language, enjoy the free content! 😀👍
Best regards,
TGV
I loved the neapolitan reaction to pineapple pizza 😂😂
and thank you for another great fun list of best and worst ..look forward to the xmas edition 🙌🙌
That gorgeous Hanhart divers reminded me of the CW Aquitaine C65…Would love to see a review on one of those tbh…seem to be a good value piece 😊
Oh man, I just switched on the Italian version that YT automatically does as I clicked on your video and I heard you saying "il mio Universale Ombra Bianca" 🤣😂
Brilliant as always... john
Following up the Austin Powers clip with a “this is my cup of tea” instead of “this is my bag, baby” is unforgivable.
As an owner of 5 Alpina watches, I can say that it is a very underrated brand that offers quite an array of product to suit most tastes.
👏👏👏 Now that is pure class. A true enthusiast, thank you.
So true what you say, I might investigate their "heritage" offerings, so well done and overlooked like you say.
Best regards,
TGV
Remember, your toaster timer is set to high !
Enjoyed the diversity of the best watches listed.
I had a Victorinox with an ETA movement for 15 years; just sold it in June. Never serviced, never babied, and never a problem from it. It was a stunningly well made watch. It was always just a hair too big for me.
Hilarious verbal descriptions of the bad watches. Much enjoyed.
I love the affiliate link for the pink black bay chronograph as you critique it pop up on screen 😂
Nivada Grenchen ships their Swiss made watches from HK. And this is also where they handle warranty repairs. What is your take on that?
The list of retailers on their own website is also either incorrect or out of date.
Thanks for your unique balance of high end and attainable pieces. I love my blue Super Seville.
Bravo! Thank you for listing both best and worst.
I just ordered my first islander can’t wait to get it in and am gonna put it through its paces going hunting in a few weeks
no.11 seems super to me, mate. Great episode, as always.👍
Enjoyed this video. Good job...
What do you think about Cyclops dates on Rolex models?
IT LOOKS LIKE SHIT . THE VERSION WITHOUT DATE IS THE RIGHT TO GET 😮😮😮😮😮😮
Did you pull the trigger on the hanhart Diver?
I'm VERY strongly considering it. Stay tuned. But regardless, it deserves a full stand alone review next year.
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
Great list with lots of new watches, I just purchased my first Nivada Gretchen!
The Bulova Super Seville was so nice, I had to get it twice! Green and Gold tone!
Studio Underdog is the best pizza since Chicago deep dish. I'd never wear it, but the brand has a lot of fun with their designs a lot like Mr Jones.
Love those Jones watches 👏👏👏
Yessss, now those are fun without offending, thank you for reminding me.
Best regards,
TGV
@@theurbangentryThe pizza watch was announced on April 1, 2023, and Richard Benc (the owner of Studio UnderdOg) assumed everyone would realize it was an April Fools' joke, and that he had no intention of actually producing any. But then a whole bunch of people took it seriously and wanted it, so Richard made some and sold them only at Windup Watch Fairs. So, I'm not sure you're being fair to him and Studio Underd0g. By the way, I own a Watermel0n and a Pink Lem0nade, and I think they're really fun.
Your first list should merge into the second one imho. Always enjoy your videos, regardless.
