professor is a real hip hop head, thank you for preserving the culture
"We cant let this whole album be Controlled" ☠️
I really wish more people were interested in the knowledge behind the music they're listening to. To be honest, as a person from the French Caribbean, I really apriciate your analysis on the beef but music and Art as a whole.
Also, AVAA because I'll be recommending this channel to a whole lot of people
Thank you!
I actually love Futures opening verse on ‘Like That’ .. he’s never gonna go crazy bar for bar with Kendrick so I liked that he just did his thing ? The hook he did is bare catchy and the weird whistle adlibs are dope
Agree I thought he fit it perfectly those whistle adlibs are fun
I found it funny how you mentioned all the Atlanta stuff on this review and in 'not like us' Lamar also talks about it and uses that topic to build his track against Drake.
Here after the beef, this is funny, is like seeing a storm without knowing is a hurrycane, nice depict!
AVAA really enjoyed the Atlanta history lesson we began with! I’d like to direct your attention to ‘Codeine Crazy’ as no understanding of Future is complete without that song and subsequently the mixtape it’s found on.
Yeah. Throw Away, in particular, is 🤯
I think Future is really interesting, since he's dropped this album I've been digging deep into his catalogue and how he is sort of an anti-Kanye or at least Travis Scott is a Ye-twisted version of Future. His discography is so vast I haven't experienced all his albums yet, but his highlights have been really interesting and genuinely great. He also has a very underrated pen game by "oldheads" (something Travis Scott doesn't have). A song like Codeine Crazy is one of the best written, most heart-wrenching songs I've ever heard but I don't think he allows himself to create at that level. He reminds me of Danny Brown (addict, hard to understand, very steeped in one particular cities sound and culture). Just random tired 6am Future thoughts before I go to church! AVAA Prof!
I didn’t know I needed hip hop talk with a university lecture feel but god damn, here we are. I haven’t subscribed this fast in a long time
8:10 is an outstanding point. I feel Future does not happen under any system but capitalism, and the particularly harsh kind in the US with a laughable “safety net.”
AVAA, also please check out Boldy James’s Manger on McNichols album if you haven’t already. In my opinion it’s his best album ever and one of the greatest listening experiences I’ve ever had. The production is unbelievable!! Also very grim atmosphere.
Oooooooof. I feel like if he made exceptions on mainly reviewing new stuff when he did the RxPapi and RXKNeph vids he should make one for this album. Fully co-sign this comment
probably the best album this decade
are you the same dude who keeps posting this? because youre correct every time. masterpiece of an album.
Yeh, That is a pretty project man. Props for Boldy for even doing something like that...really shows how he's more than just a typical rapper and sets him apart, shows he's truly a creative. Like his Indiana Jones project but to a whole other level.
About 20 minutes in right now, AVAA, if we’re talking about rappers who have a little something you don’t understand that makes you like their music more, I can’t think of a better example than Young Thug, specifically from 2013-2018. If Future is the King of Atlanta, Thug is his Lancelot. Absolutely essential to the trap conversation, and I’d argue he’s just as influential to the current state of hiphop as Future is
Jeffery is one of the best mixtapes of the 2010s.
AVAA prof ur my best music critique on yt i came across u 2 month n hooked since then . liked the break down of the dungeon n atlanta rap
I wanna take this class
Me too.
AVAA, been waiting for this one!!! Thank you for sharing your insight with the RUclips community. I always try to spread your channel via word of mouth, this is the sort of content a music fan would pay for.
First off thank you for really teaching your students about hiphop culture
The eye contact while you play a video from your laptop is unnerving
I was thinking the same thing 😂
Now you said that 😂😂😂
AVAA the WAHHHH in “i serve the bass” is a sped up sample of drake moaning. i’m not fucking around look it up
AVAA
Love your vids, this is the first album to catch my attention since Vultures, not sure if I think it’s better or not
Can’t wait for their R&B album! I’m confident it will be even better!
AVAA, Always a fan of your analysis. Super in-depth look at music, that almost every other content creator can't come close to. Good Job Skye!🍊
I seriously want to take your class. I love hip hop and I think what you do should reach way more ppl.
AVAA skye, appreciate you talking about the album as a whole
AVAA, keep up the great work!
Between Cole and Kendrick, I agree, it's not a diss. It's just rap-sparing. With Drake, it's for sure a beef. lol, They have had a passive-aggressive beef for well over a decade at this point. This just happens to be the most poignant. A lot of people are thinking we are going to see a much more direct Kendrick "post-TDE". Which I can see. He has complete freedom now. So I think we will see this side of Kenny more in the future.
And the MJ reference isn't as much as Kendrick crowning Drake with that comparison. It's a comparison Drake has made about himself, multiple times. Especially since he surpassed MJ in records sold. Drake has referenced himself as MJ more than any other artist. I think the Prince/MJ comparison is multilayered. MJ sold more records, made more music, and was the biggest pop star of his time. (Drake) Prince is more known as the better, more pure artist. He has more respect from other artists and REALLY cares about his craft. (Not saying MJ didn't. I am just talking about the perception I have observed.) He didn't drop albums nearly as much as MJ did. (Kendrick) I could ramble on forever just on that line alone. Either way, this is great for hip-hop. He and Cole are still probably on great terms. Can't say the same for Drake. lol Whether right or wrong, Kenny does not like Drake. lol
I could go on and on about this verse, but I don't want to bore anyone. And for most people, I doubt I am saying much that most people don't already know. I sadly have to head to work. So I will have to finish this video later tonight. I still think you give the best overall reviews, and I appreciate you making them for us to consume. I hope you and anyone who happens to read this have a wonderful and positive day/night!
Completely agree
Came to the comments just in hopes someone points this out. There's a lot of context that's missing if you just listen to the 2 verses. Even Future himself appears to be pushing against Drake's claims of Top 3-- literally calling him goofy. And if any of the top 3 should feel threatened by Future's success, it's Drake.
Your theory is spot on but actually Prince dropped a lot of music throughout the 90s and 2000s that has largely gone unnoticed by the general public post their initial releases. Prince was on Warner bros and decided to go independent after a long fight out his contract.
I think though Kendrick may not had to take such drastic measures as Prince starting a campaign to get off Warner bros by pulling antics like being seen in public with the word slave written on his face, he is now free like you said so this Prince element of your argument was a great observation.
Hey man, J Cole took direct shots at Kendrick on "The Perfect Recipe" before this dropped. I know we all would have liked for them to be on good terms but I just don't think that's true. IMO this isn't like sparring at all, Kendrick is genuinely done with being disrespected by both of them after dropping an album that will forever be more than they have ever contributed for the world.
J Cole on The Secret Recipe:
N***** fake-progressive and woke, I started sayin' less
I had to stop it, peeped how they profit off of racial stress
Some activists got so rich, they prolly wish we stay oppressed
STUDIO STEPPERS movin' extra on songs, fakin' rep
There's nothing friendly about this or Kendrick's response for that matter. J Cole and Drake both had negative things to say about Mr Morale and no positive things at all even after Kendrick won another grammy. On top of that they teamed up together and went on tour after dropping a song where they mention his name quite literally in vain. Idkkk I just feel like people want this to be something it's not.
I fully agree! one small note however is that it’s the opposite, Prince dropped so many records while kendrick drops less, whereas MJ dropped less and Drake releases a record every year
I think you and the guy from the “Stuff They Don’t Want you to Know” podcast would have a great discussion together. I think his name is Gnoel, but he’s a rap enthusiast as well.
the "AAAA" on serve the bass is actually a sample of a video of Drake screaming haha, AVAA
the drake screaming clip was a couple of years after ds2 dropped but it would be fun to live in a world where what u said happened
I was just coming out of high school and going into college when trap and mumble rap was gaining ground. I saw it butting heads with the other great underground getting released at the time, I always viewed artists like future as the enemy. Now, I look back at that thinking as so silly. Just because artists paint with different brushes doesn’t mean their art isn’t as cool and meaningful. I came to this album because of Kendrick, but left with a better appreciation for future and metro. Now I wanna go back and listen to more future and more metro. Phenomenal album even if it’s not their best.
AVAA love the analysis from your perspective as an actual
This is your first vid I've checked out after seeing you on Foreign man in a foreign land. I'll have you know the fact that you push greats like Billy Woods is why. Keep up the good work.
"I dont go for that daddy stuff" (Professor Skye's Record Review 2024)
AVAA. Prodigy complimenting G-Unit actually made a lot of sense, Mobb Deep was signed to G-Unit Records from 2005 until 2008. Their studioalbum Blood Money was even released on the label.
love the content I gotta research more about my ancestors in hip hop lmao
AVAA, great analysis as always professor keep up the good work!
Regarding "that verse," and specifically "your best work is a light pack" in retrospect, I don’t think Drake has ever attempted his hands at making an album of substance, and especially cohesive theme. The overarching theme and narrative tying the album from start to finish, ever since he put himself on the map, he has always deliberately made his solo studio albums reflecting what's basically going on in the hip-hop scene, every trending sound at the moment, a sound that is going to take over the scene and hasn't quite caught on just yet, and aesthetic that is going to appeal to the largest amount of people. That's why his number game is stronger than ever, literally topping the chart one after another. Still, ironically, his album overall is not as finished, cohesive, and well-organized as his contemporaries. It's his own strategic/selling point, and given that it's the streaming era, it works so well. He intentionally makes his album a light pack.
Hey professor Skye you should make a video about Luckis albums i recommend "Watch my back" the "Freewave" series and "Alternative trap"
AVAA, love your respect for what future does even if it may not be your favorite taste! He doesn’t get enough respect from the everyday person but it tells you all you need to know when all the artists even the exceptionally lyrical ones respect him‼️
Great videos
AVAA just wanted to say I loved the pirate joke
I forgot how good your videos are. I feel like I'm watching a college lecture on the philosophy of rap music.
AVAA, PLEASE review the new album by Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth. It’s fascinating and unexpected and I’d love to hear your perspective on it since you were tapped into alternative rock in the 90s as well as current day experimental rap.
avaa good job not letting your video be "controlled'
"Whats the beef, this is just rap music"
lol
People say "the plug" to refer to their dealer
I'm pretty sure that Astro world was the first album that didn't list features at first, could be wrong tho
Kanye first did it in Yeezus
Yeah it’s either that or yeezus. Definitely not Donda
@@ranchandmustard yeah but Yeezus still doesn't have features listed, so it's not the same thing
AVAA: the Pokémon move references, elite 👌🏽
AVAA Professor, but you’re totally wrong - Fried is a top 3 song on the album. A joyous, triumphant sounding trap song with early Chief Keef drums. Also reminds me of Speaker Knockerz and Trap Queen by Fetty Wap
Yo Professor Skye,
Roc Marci is dropping an album May 29th! I think you should review one of his existing albums in preparation for the new one. I don’t think you’ve reviewed one of his albums yet, and could possibly become one of your favorite MC’s if you give a listen. He’s has a bunch of tracks with Ka so you might already be familiar.
Peace.
dropped March 29th! Check it out its great work.
Roc is nice
AAVA Prof I appreciate you going Banoodles for Shawn Cee videos
AVAA. The utilization of P on this was amazing and his significance is surreal. I love this album im bias to Metro/Pluto they cant miss imo.
Baudelaire in the background? That's the French professor for you
AVAA thank you for your education 🙏❤️
AAVA lessgooooo
I want a Sky X Kodak Black sit down interview
43:25 Drake compared himself to MJ in the final lines of FPS
It’s cool to hear such a smart guy spitting facts about art. Get this man on everyone’s FYP
AAVA
AVAA || I would love to take your class. How can I register? Am I too late?
avaa THE REFERENCE TO THE MR BANANA GRABBER WHISTLE WAS TOP NOTCH
The way you say Atlanta throws me off so much 😭
AVAA incredible album
Consider enable the subtitles when you show the video interviews 👀
Around 46:00 ((AVAA))
The word goofy is so innocent, but it’s definitely always a shot, and not something you allow to be said about you. To be goofy I always thought was lighthearted. You need a funny guy around for the relief I thought it was a virtue. It just has a dark connotation I’m not sure where that came from, but it makes sense describing someone as truly manipulatable or just ignorant.
ALSO LOL UR FRIEND KEITH?? 💀😂😂
less gooo
The sample on "Like That" is originally from Rodney O and Joe Cooley "Everlasting Bass"....a hip hop classic from the 80s. It also samples Michelle's voice from Eazy E's "Eazy Duz It".
I may be biased towards the vehicle but I did indeed enjoy the pirate joke.
Tres bien
RIP Rico. Dungeon forever! AVAA
AVVA What university do you teach at? I would love to take some of your courses. If that’s too revealing i understand
because I don't represent them, I don't say their name. Trying to keep work/hobby separate. Sorry!
It's a fantastic album
AVAA u should review my SunkenWRLD tape
I remember back in your Donda 2 vid a couple years ago you said you haven't listened to much future and weren't a big fan. Great to see that you've come around! I couldn't stand Future when Tony Montana dropped in 2012, but I completely changed my mind on him after listening to DS2 and his 3 classic tapes (56 nights, monster, beast mode) in 2015. Now he's one of my favorite hip-hop artists. I enjoyed his last 2 albums, but WDTY is his best project since 2019's The Wizrd, which is one of my favorite Future albums.
I wanna take your class!
The mike reference was because drake’s bar on being a couple away from MJ, He’ll out live him of he put the MJ hat on with a Prince Bar!
AVAA always here
"Type RRRR?" Wth😂 AVAA
That Type R joke was insane 😂😂😂 👏
Got future in your top 3? Fire
What do I need to pay to get a review of “the patience” or “the water?”
AVAA - RIP Prodigy, my favorite thing anyone has said about P was Earl Sweatshirt on his radio show: "Shout out to Prodigy man, every song he just sounds like Prodigy" 😂
Avaa in future whistling
Pharoahe Monch, Fabolous and ASAP Ferg also went to High School of Art and Design
new to the channel, what does the AVAA stand for in the comments?
Amazing video as always
The first A can stand for anything tho, and it doesn't have to be positive
AVAA… try “What A Time To Be Alive” and collab album between Future, Drake, and Metro Boomin. An old fav of mine.
And while I may not agree with you on every take, your videos are great! Keep it up professor Skye!!!!!!
Avaa!
yo AVAA I would appreciate if you can mark your video cuz sometimes it’s hard to figure out what song you’re talking about
Btw u goated. Good vid
Also, do you give your course online? I’m from Puerto Rico 💀
i caught the pokemon reference lol
The plug reference started in hip hop because rappers claim to be dealers and even if just using it’s supposed that you can buy in quantities a dealer doesn’t have therefore needing the plug to make the purchase 😂
This guy is so fucking funny
@41:15….that aged like 2% milk 💀😂
I’d argue that Young Thug is the most influential rapper of this generation.
It's close. Imo future is more influential though. Young thug is better imo though.
What does avaa stand for?
avaa!
I fully respect future, but I've never gotten used to his sound. It's my fault because I'm still getting used to trap. And I grew up around rap. Apparently T.I started it pretty much right? Loved T.I but I noticed I never cared what he rapped about vs eminem or outcast back in the day where I'm trying to memorize the lyrics. T.i always had great hooks until he became a rapper to listen to. Future to me isn't what t.i became, I just can't get used to his music, when I'm listening to his songs, I just can't wait for his verses to be over 😂
Not listing guest appearances long predates Donda
35:15 this album just might be a cupcake that keeps coming back and only gets better, because he gets more declarative. Ratcheting up the competetive nature of hip hop.
Re: Future
I heard he doesn’t use drugs. But, I thought I heard him say “he was so high that . . .” Please clarify. Thanks.
Wait we have to hear why you don't like Popular!
The most influential rapper of the generation is without question chief keef
Boominati 👀
34:51 🤣🤣🤣🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 I choked #AVAA
AVAA felt very similar listening the album 🤔
AVAA
