Drake "For All The Dogs" review - What did you expect?

- My daughter wanted me to name this video "Drake the kind of guy to have 12 good songs on a 23 song album." Which is true, but also demands more nuance. What should we expect and what do we expect?

So yeah I don't have time or energy to listen to the whole Drake album. Avaa Thanks for video, I trust your opinions so I got a 12tracked better version of a Drake album.
Thanks for compiling these.
You're more than welcome and thanks for the amazing review
Na lol you forgot amen
Thumbnail of the year lol
It better walk around like daft punk
EA Sports - Drake is such a good comparison. Kudos AVAA
I’ve never heard someone talk about album bloat in such a succinct and harrowing way - just you will listen to it even if it’s longer and worse
Lol i swear watching this after the beef is hilarious
Correct 😂
You absolutely nailed it with the line 'i dont see drake hate i see drake indifference'. Most of my friends opinion on drake is just 'yeah hes a good marketer'
I see dead people
32:42
Dear Adonis....
absolute banger thumbnail, saying so much with so little
AVAA in advance. I'm personally from the school of thought that Drake is bound to create bloated albums to amp the streams but in the process, he needs to strike the sweet spot between Corporate Trash records & Fan Service records, you know, something for them, something for me. Album is truly creatively lacking, with few glimpses of hope for something fresh from Drake. 8 AM at Charlotte probably my favorite along with Rich Baby Daddy. CONDUCTOR WE HAVE PROBLEM, brought a smile on my face.
But I think Drake is at a level where he doesn’t need to do the whole “one for them, one for me” he could drop a 10 song album and every single song would chart within the top 20 of the charts. I think it’s just him tbh
Interesting thing with Drake is that at the beginning of his career he was considered an artist that wasn't afraid of his emotions and showing them in music and that's why he became so popular. It was at the time when the majority of artists focused on being tough, Drake showed his emotions, especially in rap genre (I realize that Kanye created this lane and Drake continued on that) Lots of people were able to relate to Drake's music. Throughout the years he kept doing the same thing but I think that at the core it's still what attracts many listeners.
I think Drake lost that a long time ago, he's using the same language or structure of vulnerability in hip hop to mask insecurity. I never listen to a Drake album expecting to feel any empathy, I just feel disappointment and pity personally
Yea nah he's not that Drake and that's because he's a colonizer of diaspora cultures
@kevinabimiku6445 I think we've learned he's a narcissist, and we've watched the evidence of that over the years.
That’s one of the best Drake explanations I ever heard… thank you
Your review of the Drake album a year ago “Her Loss” was one of my favorite videos ever of yours, how you described the Patrick Bateman persona Drake adopted
"lets talk about the Grams" Kendrick had the same idea as you
Avaa. I came here because of the Kendrick and Drake battle and have watched approximately 6 hrs of videos in the last 2 days. Love the perspective and the concept of this channel
Same here. I'm glad I found this channel
I find the “Another late night” beat is quite infectious
AVAA
OMG… you are making Kendrick’s point on his battle rhymes. WOW. 😮 You are amazing.
32:42 hits different now. great review as usual, prof
love this new overexposed era of prof skye
he’s getting drained
Thanks for helping re-spark my interest in music again Professor. AVAA!
AVAA I’ve been watching you for years. I love watching you so much man. Sending love to you, the goat, and the rest of the family.
AVAA. Thanks Skye! My fav music reviewer, love the way you talk about music. Appreciate all your work.
Keep up the good work I love the reviews your so awesome and honest
One of the better things to come out of the drake kendrick beef for me was discovering this channel. avaa west coast
AVAA! I enjoy your takes always
AVAA! My 2nd fave music review channel! There's been a couple of times that I've listened to an album just off your review alone, lol. Keep up the good work, professor!
Also, Bad Bunny is Puerto Rican
which is the first one?
avaa! current rotation is the new drake and earl. really like both. drake album is best on shuffle. its honestly less of an album and more of a playlist like More Life was. Away From Home is really good storytelling/petty Drake, especially during the second verse where he starts talking about losing to esperanza spalding.
This is one of your best reviews haha, so on point but also funny and not too serious. Bien joué !
AVAA i see you prof lookin fresh with the fade 💯 woof woof 🐶
AAVA. I never really clicked with Drake's music, but I know a lot of my friends like his work. So it was interesting to hear you analyze this album and kind of explain what my friends get out of his music. And even on an album with songs you didn't particularly enjoy, I love that you made sure to emphasize the parts that you loved. I hope that you'll soon review Petey's new album USA, and I can't wait for the next vid!
Another great video, Professor. I truly liked your views on what to expect from a Drake album and the way you compared him to the yearly EA Sports titles was very interesting. AVAA
AVAA. Always great discussions!!! Also Profesor, I hope you are excited for Ye's upcoming collab with Ty dolla 🙏🔥
please review the new slauson malone 1 record, truly a gem of an album. my favourite of this year. i think you will love it. :)
AVAA :)
AVAA wow nit only is this a great review but also a great analysis Drake's overall brand as an artist
can you share your list/playlist of the songs that you do like. I am interested in how that as a full on listen trough would sound like.
AVAA, favorite reviews on all youtube
AVAA, AV FREAKIN AA BROTHER. Thumbnail of the year indeed
Wanted to suggest the new Slauson Malone 1 album. Don’t wanna give too much away but it’s a very meditative listen, unfortunately came out the same day as FAT D so not gonna get too much shine but it’s a beautiful piece of work. Potential for Thunderground Thursday
Hey Skye! awesome AVAA as always or something. long time scubscriber, first time commenter here
I agree with your thoughts about expectations from a drake album but the writers' strike has hit him hard ngl his bars were lackin big time
Avaa prof. Thanks for putting into words how I feel about drake as a somewhat drake hater but also someone who wants to enjoy all music. Unrelated but I’m heading to Paris and want to know what you would recommend I do/see that might not be obvious.
Picasso museum is amazing. That’s the main one I would prioritize.
I couldn't get with "honestly nevermind" when I saw that kaytranada wasn't even featured on the album. A fellow Canadian Grammy winner who is killing the house scene... That's silly. It's like Nestle refusing water from lake Michigan
I was reading the comments while googling the abbreviation AVAA when you enlightened me. I rarely can’t find what i wanna know in short time, thanks for relieving the frustration of failing to do so. This is the first Drake music I’ve ever pressed play on. Listened to the Conductor Williams joint and the J. Cole joint. Liked J. Cole, not my favorite Conductor beat but not terrible. Couldn’t have consumed more if my life was in the balance, but maaaaan. Cole SLAYED that verse. Drake’s wordplay is like his poetry. Lacking substance, wannabe clever, extremely corny.
Are you planning on reviewing the Sufjan album?
I assumed you record on a camera. Are you using the phone microphone or do you have an attachment?
AVAA. Have a good day Prof!
32:40 "lets talk about the grahams" kdot a few months later "okay"
AVAA - Ye aint Cancelled !
You should have more views and likes because this channel is gold
Le professor, big fan from uganda wish i could attend your classes
I never thought I could be this entertained by a review for an album that I refuse to listen to, as a former Drake Stan turned indifferencer. AAVA
EA SPORTS it’s in the Drake 😂
Nah bro. Goat is NOT based on sales. Especially is hip hop in a world where streaming numbers can be fake. Goat is based on cultural impact
AVAA chief keefs feature is pretty bad but he is the pretty good sample on 7969. Would love to see you look at one of his albums some day they can be great
AVAA and "carti type" beats genre is called "RAGE"....slightly similar to todays hyperpop with some trap aestetics
I had this whole theory about how drake had been deeply hurt by clb's reception as like 'the worst one yet' and he said fuck it im an artist now and we were in phase three of his career and he'd just dropped 2 lean focused albums that were doing a thing not something for everyone and yes here we go! I was wrong... avaa...
I vehemently disagree with you that he tried anything with Honestly, Nevermind other than what he does all the time: Trend hopping for the sake of posturing. He comes off as someone that hears what's popping up in the market, does the bare minimum to take that sound to his style, and then calls it a day and hops on the next trend.
He did that with Caribbean Dance, with Drill, with Trap, is doing with Rage and new age trap, and in none of those cases he actually pushed the sound of those genres forward.
And why is that a problem? Well, mainly because he is someone who has the resources and connections to make the BEST PRODUCT anyone could make. He has a great team of talented producers, who instead of making great art, are making the walmart brand of rap. It's frustrating.
One thing you said about Kanye in the Donda review is that, no matter what he does, he doesn't do it for money. The listening parties, the renting out of stadiums, the number of tracks, the features, none of that was a stunt to pull in dollars. Drake feels like the opposite, everything he does is to make more money, to optimize the yield he gets per drop.
AVAA.
That's a great comparison
You really stepped up your thumbnail game
23:37 it’s me from the future skye, don’t let your daughter listen to drake
I agree as a big Drake fan this album isnt bad its more of the same as the recent material you can see he isnt inspired and i just trying to stay relevant i always say he made his best music from 09-17 and i still like his music but he is past his prime thats why im glad he is taking a break but the songs im keeping from this album are:
Virginia Beach
Amen
Fear of Heights
Daylight
First Person Shooter
Bahama Promises
Tried Our Best
8AM in Charlotte
What would Pluto Do
Members Only
Away from Home
All the Parties
Drew a Picasso
Screw the world interlude
Have you checked out “All Screwed Up Vol II”? One of the best albums ever, I’d love for you to make a whole video on DJ Screw someday
Personally, I think Drake's next best album will be when he settles down and puts out the love album
YES! AND, I sincerely and selfishly hope he meets his lady soon so we can finally have this (good!) love album within the next two or three years. It seems like it’s the only experience that might inspire him again. If so, hopefully it elevates the content of his material.
AVAA
Humbly request you do a review for Voir Dire!
Working on it!
It is a distinction that matters.
22:20 Awesome video as always
amazing thumbnail
AVAA great review
Please review Model/Actriz debut album. I think you’d looooooove it brotha
Pleeeeease daddy Skye
You’d be so pumped to talk about this music
Just consider it. Trust me.
Might get a mug tbh, problem is I'm in the UK
This hits different after the beef lol.
AVAA, is there a link to the playlist?
Here it is (I use Tidal) tidal.com/playlist/bae86f3f-37d2-4e92-a8ea-1050e40f2575
Hey Cool Video.
best reviewer
AAVA Professor!
presente professor, avaa
Drizzy Drake Rogers (as Weezy once called him) making Professor Skye drop the f-bombs lol
One of the only things I'll give Mr. Aubrey Graham credit for is on his album from 2013 he said: "I'm tired of hearin' 'bout who you checkin' for now/Just give it time, we'll see who's still around a decade from now."
What him and Taylor Swift have been able to do, stay relevant into their third decade (2000s, 2010s, 2020s) to the point that high school seniors in the summer before college back in '09 were listening to "Best I Ever Had" and "You Belong With Me" on their iPod nanos and high school seniors in 2023 in the summer before uni were listening to "Sticky" and "Anti-Hero" on their iPhone is crazy.
That out of the way, I do think there is fair critique that his music hasn't matured in a way that other artists (like the forementioned Taylor Swift) has. It seems that he's still rapping about the same things he did a decade ago despite nearing his 40s. Now, I will concede extended adolscence and delayed adulthood is certainly a thing amongs millenials but you'd think (like a Jay-Z or even a Ye) his subject matter and emotional response to things would change over time.
Despite knowing a myriad of Drake songs (including some of his early deep cuts) just through osmosis living north of the border) "Certified Lover Boy" was the first Drake album I listened to all the way through and then "Honestly, Nevermind" and now "For all the Dogs." I do think your EA Sports analogy is right on and that (to be fair to him) artists releasing an album every year (or even every two years) without the ability to live life in between projects to provide for material and also filter out the bad stuff would hurt the quality of any project (which is why many sports gamers have argued that sports games should be released less frequently so there are nothing more, as you rightfully say, roster updates lol).
Great review, I totally agree with your take on what expectations you should have going into a Drake album. It seems like people's enjoyment of his music largely hinges on their tolerance to corn and long tracklists. As a small note, though, I think that line on Virginia Beach is more about someone's use of the slang "period" rather than literal menstruation.
AVAA 5 BAGS OF POPCORN?? Subscribed 😂😂
Although I don’t give ratings, there is a secret rating system that assigns 5 bags to every album.
AVAA , if you ever get around to the new Timber Timbre record, I will scubscribe 137 more times
so fantistic the thumbnail
Hi Professor! I’m really excited to hear your take after listening to FD Signifier’s B Sides channel video. He’s absolutely fantastic and unpacks the good and bad of Drake so well! Edit: AVAA! 🫶
What is AVAA?
avaa, the ea sports comparison is right on the money
Ty Dolla$ is too busy making an album with Ye in Italy right now. Rumors are it's dropping Friday.🤞
This is the rudest fucking thumbnail and I love it.
Nice
I would beg to differ, there's a lot of drake hate, a lot
He's a hateable guy
Sometimes you can think that Prof Skye is young and hip bc he embraces new music in a way that even a lot of young people don't but then he says stuff about George Bush Sr
And you do a double take bc it's easy to forget Bush's dad was a president.
Ha’. My first time voting was against Bush Sr.
Avaa, So many great points. I don’t think I’ll ever return to a Drake album in full after initial listen, but I always love the event of a Drake release.
Drake: The Brand.
No Gang of Four commenter? You were almost there!
Never count Ethan out. (Did you know that he is the only auditor to actually take one of my classes in real life?)
AAVA
Professor Skye! Love your framing of Drake as an enigma in music/rap/art. However, I urge you to relisten to Amen! Yeah there’s definitely some Donda influence here, but I think the song embodies a lot of what Kanye and Drake both do well. They both embody this principle of if it sounds good it doesn’t matter what I say.
Yes, the lyrics are a little forgettable but the combination of the beat and Drake’s voice really sound like candy.
What’s AVAA???
I dont 100 percent agree with this review since I kobe
Ve at least 17 songs on here. But you make some good points for sure
even proffesor is struggling with being positive
4 all thee doggies :33 🐶🐶
Please tell me you’re doing the new Dorian album!! Your video on them was so good
AVAA, was very disappointed at how boring this album was and I say that as someone who loved Honestly Nevermind, Dark Lane Demo Tapes, etc. 8AM in Charlotte and the J Cole song are incredible however
AVAA my brother
I think the whole “can your pussy do the dog” line is a Cramps reference or that’s what I tell myself cuz it’s fun to imagine Drake listening to The Cramps
I don’t acknowledge the commercial success angle of greatness. Mcdonalds isn’t great. Hope you’ve got a busy few weeks I can catch up on. Eto, Rome Streetz (one of his best), Wiki Mike & Alc, Voir Dire, Mick Jenkins awhile back. There’s been some great music lately.
Lollllll at the subliminal in calling screw the world the best song on the album and then following it up by saying a fan wants to know more about Drake because of his I’m 2 Sexy track. 😂😂
You should make a video on kanye influence on you
AVAA
not keeping bahamas promises is wild. clearly never been to Nassua
Sales and streams are manipulated plus artists like myself are shadow banned. Using sales as the ultimate metric for GOAT status has a ton of problems in an unfair, capitalist music business framework.
