My Thoughts on Anthony Fantano’s Vulture takes:
I’ve gotten quite a few questions on this, so here are my answers…(numbered, in case you want to respond in a specific and respectful way and have a dialogue about this rather interesting moment in internet music criticism)
1. I appreciate all the praise that my video has received, I really do. I’m super proud of my work, but please do not consider me to be the “anti-Fantano.” If you have ever harassed him then please do not support me!
2. His non-review was totally justified, especially given the size of his channel and the reach of his voice.
3. What he said took guts. I know it got him clicks as well, but that is a lot of grief for a few clicks. Dude is so popular he could do a Venga Boys tier list and get more clicks than I get in an entire year, so I think it is genuinely an attempt to “stand on business” as another music RUclipsr might say.
4. I still don’t know if I acted in a morally responsible way in releasing this video and it has caused me many hours of sleep. I am trying to walk a tightrope of nuance, which is super thin (See #5). I don’t blame anyone who decides not to take that risk. The amount of “Fuck Fantano” comments I got and other comments that praised me while downplaying antisemitism tells me that maybe the nuance didn’t work out for me.
5. Is it possible to support Kanye West the Human and Artist without enabling Kanye West the dangerous person with serious mental health issues? I *think* the answer is yes, but the jury is definitely still out. If Fantano says No, then who can blame him?
6. (Imagine me under a sheet with mascara running down my face screaming “Leave Anthony Alonnnnne!”)
7. Fantano is absolutely out of his mind calling “Back to Me” mid and way too fixated on mixing levels, but you know, I wouldn’t insult him personally because of that. Seriously, what is up with that?
8. People bringing up his personal life are like, very, very very uncool and out of pocket, as you kids say. I don’t know anything about his personal life because he hasn’t told me anything about his personal life.
9. Although I praised the album a lot, I also tried to say many of the very same things that he said about Ye. I do not think that Ye should be let off the hook for his hate speech or the terrible people around him. I do think he is a rather pathetic figure on this album and I said so in my review. I just also think that he is the greatest living artist. See #5
Bravo, personally I choose not to tap into this album (I listened to a couple of songs). However, I think the answer to the question you raise under #5 is yes. Claire Dederer wrote an interesting book about this. It's called 'Monsters, a fan's dilemma'.
Like your "sponsors" on this video, I appreciate your call to diffuse poor Fantano's impossible position. I think Kanye is self aware and poetically honest, in his greater moments. The issues with with mother (ala Jason Voorhees) have plagued generations and stumped the greatest minds (Freud, Oedipus Rex). I read this as a sad album, a dirge, and a self-authored posthumous autopsy. Jesus told the greater masses who only wanted free bread and fish "eat my flesh and drink my blood or F--- off!". By calling the album "vultures" Ye is asking for true believers that will consume him/his work.

I absolutely appreciate your approach to this- even if I haven't watched the video yet~ I decided to keep my mouth shut on Anthony's video due to the touchy nature of the subject but I completely agree that It's completely fine for him to have done that. No agenda is pushed that his viewers have to follow, it was solely his decision likely based on ethics and business. Going on to mention the album WITHOUT the politics surrounding it is... it already sounds dumb just like that xD

Professor, let's not forget the kind of content Fantano creates and the humor he uses. He shaped his audience in a certain way, so there's no reason to expect anything other than the treatment he's receiving. He uses toxic humor all of the time, his audience is young and terminally online, so they will go after him the same way he goes after them on his streams and Twitter. Also you can't really erase all the stuff you did on the internet, and unfortunately for him, Fantano has plenty of instances where he didn't practice what he's preaching now, so the hypocrisy can't be ignored.
I guess be happy for all of the engagement he's getting? Surely he'll profit greatly from the attention.

At about 21 mins when you talked about the album cover couldn’t help thinking about the Life of Pablo album cover. The question of which one is finally answered. Kanye has fully accepted his sex addiction. Which is insane because he sounds miserable and preachy whenever he talks about it in interviews.

This is definitely more sexually explicit than Yeezus or TLOP.
I think this is just the vibe of the first Volume. Like there’s still conflict with beg forgiveness following many progressively over the top sexual driven tracks

Beg Forgiveness is my favorite, the ending is so raw and emotional, I couldn't help but tear up the first time - especially with Good (Don't Die) just after. "I'm still waking with murder on my mind" made me think of I Thought About Killing You, so I definitely think he's talking to himself still.

I think something you’ve identified that really resonated with me is how the joy of listening to Ye in the same communal way we used to is gone, even if a lot of brilliant awesome moments remain and there’s still a lot for us to chew on artistically. I truly appreciated these three essays, 1) because it showcases your own Kanye-like artistry in how you are following your own muse in what you want to talk about and how you want to run your channel 2) but how you measure that with caution, humility to different perspectives, thoughtfulness, and compassion for those with different lived experiences. You go deeper than simply separating art and artist, and I love how these essays and your views update when you get new information or a new perspective, which is why I do consider you one of the RUclips GOATs, a respite from the reactionary industry complex that even the best RUclipsrs fall pray to.

So glad you bring up the issue with horror movies, where the biggest horror is how horrifically depicted mental illness is. The amount of damage horror movies, IPs, and related media portrayals have had on say those with dissociative identity disorder, is beyond description.
maybe the only interesting point in this whole video. I mean he did miss out on some aspects related to heros/villains, black metal aesthetics.
I havent been able to watch this video yet, but that's a gross oversimplification. You talk about "horror movies", as if it's some monolithic empire. I won't deny that horror has had harmful representations of mental health over the years... particularly directors that fixate on it like M Night Shyamalan... but it isn't horror which exudes these harmful stereotypes. It is just an extension of harmful views by particular artists, not the format of art itself.
To go even further, as a mentally ill and neurodivergent person, I believe the existence of horror is a positive for those who suffer from mental struggles. Horror, very specifically, was a crucial aspect of me coming to terms with myself as I grew up. Teaching me that it's okay to have dark thoughts, and that there's even beauty in that.
Like I said, I havent watched the review yet. But I think its flat out wrong to say horror is explicitly harmful to those who struggle with mental health. Horror media saved my life.

This is honestly the single best review of any media I've ever watched on this whole website. You managed to get all the random thought nuggets I've been trying (and mostly failing) to convey to my friends on why I still think Kanye is great even though I also think he did some horrible things, so thank you for that. This video gave me a much greater understanding of a lot of the symbolism on the album, whether implied or otherwise, especially around the cover and the Jason mask. I do wanna mention that in King I think the "Crazy, Bipolar, Antisemite" line is meant to be read as a quotation, as a reference to what people and the media have said about / portrayed him as. He seems to not see himself as bipolar anymore, and I'm sure if you ask him if he's antisemitic (even in 2022 when his opinions were likely a lot more turbulent) he would tell you he's not, "_but_...". So I think it's more of a "you call me all these things to destroy me, and yet I'm still here", rather than full on admittance.
One thing I found interesting though is that you talk about the Jewish conspiracies as the ultimate evil in both this video and the one on Talking, but you kind of just say it is the worst thing you can do a couple times and never reason about it. I'm not saying this to disagree at all, but it comes off a bit disjointed how you have albums and anecdotes to back up pretty much every claim you make in these videos, but this specific point is always just left at the surface level. I will admit I'm not super versed on the channel lore so it might have been explained prior, but I think it might be worth mentioning the inevitable next time it comes up in relation to Ye. But again, I agree with your sentiment, just think it might be worth talking about a bit to substantiate it.

A little story about the Rippler. At a party, friend & I were talking about 2023. I realized, my purpose in 2023 was bringing ripples into the world.
I work in the affordable housing/counseling space. I have created many ripples last year (clients purchasing homes, accessing resources, communities growing/developing, etc.)
My friend joked I’m the Rippler. A wanna-be evil villain. With an evil voice: “hehehe. I’m sending ripples out into the world!” Citizens say “Yea it’s actually making life better. Keep doing it” And I’m crushed as a villain.
This story was probably funnier in person 😂

AVAA. I'd like to take a moment to appreciate this analysis video. You worded in the best and most open-minded way possible. Crazy how you filled it with interesting references here and there and you talk about how artists use streaming as a way to change up their sound kinda like what Ye did with Life of Pablo. Though some disagreement here (about Rowling owning the rights of Hogwarts Legacy from Harry Potter which I fully doubt, it's Warner Bros if I'm correct.) But still, I think you worded the stuff in the best way possible ever.
So excited to see your take on the art! On first listen, this album seems to be bursts of seriousness covered by moments of comedy. The tone is so “Un-Yeezy” it is like no other Kanye album

Vultures to me is about the sheer focus, putting morals aside, putting purposes aside, just about competition, triumph, and winning. It’s actually like a sense of actualisation where you got the setting up right, and now you just need to achieve it, do the dirty work. If you heard some of the late 2022 leaks of Kanye, it’s spiritual, and the transition from the deep spiritual purposeful sound to Vultures shows just this, putting morals aside and making it.

As a native english speaker they don't sound similar to me, I would have never made this connection. It's possible though

AVAA, anyone who missed the first 10 minutes missed something important!
I listened to it at first and of course some of the songs are so good, damn Carnival made me jump so much. But i felt bad, heavy, after listening to the whole album, and I didn't know exactly why. Your thoughts helped get myself clear why it just felt like something was off.
It's clear he's in a bad place right now. But what's more appealing about Kanye is that his artistry just speaks, it connects to me, is relating in some points, even if i'm not a recently divorced dude. Guess that's what art is supposed to be.
Hope he can heal, i don't believe he is a bad person, quite the opposite, to be honest. But anyways he's clearly vulnerable and miserable right now, and i think that's one of the times when art gets the most powerful.
Superb analysis. The viewpoints on Ye as a human, and the collective mourning many fans feel, resonates with me so much.
Even donda felt like a mourning, when Never Abandon your Family was released, I heard pain, but also vengeance, rebirth, and even threat.
Production was spectalular as always, vocals were meh, and my overall digestion of the album was: chaos, insanity, ego, immortality, and above all, a regression and immaturity.
It felt like the production holiness of Ye passed on to a 17 year old male teenager. Vengeful, Sexual, Paradoxial, Rebellious, Humorous, and Youthful.
love this new album but i don’t think i can agree that it’s better than late registration. just the fact that kanye would write his own lyrics and produce almost the entirety of his first three albums just makes those songs very special to me because nowadays u can find reference tracks for a lot of kanye verses like rooga wrote half of kanye’s verse on jesus lord and it just makes it not hit as hadd

I have lots of thoughts. Short version, I totally support him and understand his position, but don’t agree with a lot of his conclusions and think the antagonism is his approach was a bit much.
Just wanted to comment that this is an absolutely incredible analysis and expertly put into words a lot of my confused thoughts and feelings about the album.

Not really a beef, just one of my least favorite Kanye albums. I know it triggers people so I troll it a bit.
I find it super interesting that the instant Kanye publicly abandoned Christianity, the drums came back.

Might be a bit of stretch, but id love to see you discuss horror themes in music. Hearing you talk about the Ye and Jason Voorhees thing got me thinking about how that could be an interesting avenue to explore. Its a shame that a lot of that potential limelight is taken up by something that ultimately boils down to antisemitism, feels like such a waste.
I guess thats i feel about Ye, a strongly grown apple tree that grows rotten fruit.

AVAA - I feel like I've read so many takes about this just being a fun club banger record which it def is but also to me this record has such an obvious arc and narrative that is going over a lot of peoples heads.
