The one Tyler reference, “used to listen to me with their ears closed… now I’m 000000,” is also a play on coding. He’s essentially saying he’s Black and rich. The html code for black is exactly #000000.

Yo, I just want to thank you for this reaction video for CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST that you've made. Not many albums are worthy of an intellectual discussion like this, but this one definitely qualifies. As a 50yo brother whose been accused of "acting white" most of my life, there's no one in the game I identify w/ more than Tyler (although J. Cole comes close). Speaking of Cole, before this dropped my favorite so far this year was The Off-Season, but now....wow. The Off-Season was Alpha Centauri, this..CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST is Betelgeuse. And my favorite track is MASSA too...somehow I knew you were going to say that was yours too. The drum breaks on it are beyond. Thematically, WILSHIRE, I think, grounds the album, as Tyler draws us into his inner conflict...which is the secret of all great literature....in his first person narrative...and his inner conflict is between GRATITUDE and WANTING MORE...and, to paraphrase the Tao te Ching, "...wanting more is what causes unhappiness, always..." Most of all, thank you for reminding me that the secret to life is GRATITUDE...Overall, great video. I learned a lot and relived Tyler's best ever album through new eyes. #100

Actually really loved your in depth analysis of the album, a lot of cool thoughts on here.
If you haven't listened to Tyler's previous records, i definitely would recommend that to gain a deeper perspective on his career path as an artist and on his new album.
Tyler drops callbacks to his previous records on multiple tracks of CMIYGL and does it in a way that says "This is where I'm coming from and now you're hearing where I'm going"
He's all about growth and always moving forward, every record of his takes on a different persona and builds a new picture, so it would be worth the discussion, to check his other albums.

Ka is a part time rapper, part time firefighter from Brownsville, NY who is known for his concept albums relating his life and experiences to books, tales, or cultures. This album he focuses specifically on the journey of the legend of Orpheus. I think you would really enjoy his other work as well but this feels like his stand out project.

Encore merci, your thoughts are precious for my understanding ; I am not a native speaker so I need double effort to get to the actual meaning of his lyrics.

Im not far into the video so theres a very good chance you touch on this later but i think the connection between the album and charles baudelaire is pretty obvious and surface level one- les fleurs du mal and call me if you get lost have a shared emphasis on travel. Its referenced on safari and in other places, tyler recurringly brings up his passport and mentions the first time he left LA as an expansive life changing moment for him. I think the baudelaire name seems to tyler like something that is foreign (in a somewhat fetishized way, imo he has kind of has this fetishized view of france and french culture that a lot of americans do in his work for a while now-i dont necessarily mean this in a bad way) and somewhat opulent and well traveled and sophisticated- and i think that idea/persona helps him find solace and clear his head from the relationship he elaborates on as the other main theme through the album. Just a guess though

Ok you do on touch it and kind of dismiss the travel connection as one thats too simple but i honestly dont think it is or at least i think it is simple but still the truth? I mean the poem you read after that also kind of affirms that idea that travel is the main connective tissue between them-maybe just saying saying 'travel' is an over simplified way of putting it but tbh for the most part i dont think the baudelaire connection runs too deep or complex here. Not that tyler cant have some deep thought provoking theme behind the album, but i felt like in comparison with his last 2 releases this was a much more surface level album- it still had some thoughtful sentiments but i think there was definitely more of a focus on just kind of making a banger old school type mixtape that kind of mixes together all of tylers previous works. Unlike his more recent albums imi this one doesnt present us with a new side of him. We've already seen him present himself as the side lover with unreciprocated feelings, we've seen this braggadocio from him before, and him talking about following your pleasure, we've even seen this luxurious travelling type persona from him before. Idk i just think the charles baudelaire connection is actually somewhat surfacey judging by the context of the rest of the album

Another quality review! Some notes....the "Eddie Murphy meme" you mentioned is actually Levar Burton from Reading Rainbow! aahahaa that struck me funny! I first discovered your reviews when you went deep on Chromeo's "Quarantine Casanova", in which you brought up a great point about joking during a time of chaos and uncertainty, which leads me to ask, have you seen Bo Burnham's "Inside" on Netflix yet? Would love to see you review that thing! Peace!

Something I noted when you said it was how Baudelaire was known for being a poet who loved to explore the dichotomy between the beautiful and the ugly, as with the example you mention the poem about the corps that’s also about a love of his. I believe this is also if not a reason for the choice at lest a commonality between the two artists as Tyler’s early work was also heavily forced on grime edge and similarly young and angsty things, his (although I also haven’t myself listened to it so this is just second hand) use of over the top and colorful language would contrast with the moments of beauty from background synthesis. Lastly an example I’m more familiar with is the full title of his 4th album known as Flower Boy which’s full title is Scum Fuck Flower Boy. At the time his most melodic and orchestral album featuring some of his most personal rapping but also a lot of hard bangers that he would pivot to after moments of vulnerability. Idk how to finish; rambling done.

I thought when "Lumberjack" came out it sounded very sonically similar to a lesser known artist, named Chester Watson, 2015 track Dead Albatross. Then HE came out with the Baudelaire thing and I couldn't think that it was a coincedence, but I don't know which discovery was first for him. Perhaps he heard dead albatross, then looked into the meaning, and came across Baudelaire? Who knows. Maybe it is a coincedence, but it is fun still.

Thanks for your thoughts! The lines from MASSA - This perspective from the beak of a bird/ You hope I peak, you take my peace - reminded of Baudelaire's The Albatross, whose core metaphor fits Tyler perfectly as he's seen as weird, awkward, and having too much nuance.
