let me tell you, listening to this album while being a millionaire who is the most wanted person in the United States and is eating Doritos in France looking at a frog that is hoppin' on the floor hits different.
Laura's singing part on Doritos and Fritos felt nostalgic to me, like something out of a mainstream 2010s pop song
one of my favorite parts of the album
At 54, I may be one of 100 Gecs' oldest fans. The number of ideas packed into a Gecs song amazes me, and it excites me to hear how music evolves into the future-however much that future affords me.
Not to be too self-serving, but I think the older a Gecs fan is the younger they are.
46 years old here and also a David lol
@The Stereotypical Stereotype Show
Good name, David. I'm happy to know other middle-aged fans exist.
@@professorskye Very true !
I'm 61 and wild about them. Of course, I was an indie influencer 10 years ago, so I still keep up with new music. My friends are stuck in the musical 70s sadly. I can share my love of gecs' sound and vision with my younger friends, who still often say it sounds like kid's music, haha.
ok but actually the daughter had a point about this being everything everywhere all at once music
Right?!?
I remember the first time I listened to the album... the lyrics "put emojis on my grave" made me stop everything I was doing. I had to. It's just brilliant. 100 gecs' lyrics, in general, are way more interesting and, one could say, "profound" than people give them credit for and it's nice seeing someone pointing it out. Great vid!
One thing I wanted to add is my interpretation of the song "I Got My Tooth Removed" from my perspective as a trans woman. I don't know if this is what Laura intended but it is what I got. In "Dumbest Girl Alive" she says "I got lighting in my veins, walk around like Frankenstein, I did science on my face, I'm the dumbest girl alive". I initially interpreted this line as in reference to taking synthetic estrogen and getting Facial Feminization Surgery. Through this lens, I view "I got my tooth removed" being more or less entirely about trans surgery. Much of the song is about how detrimental the "tooth" is to their life, and when getting it removed it was very traumatic, even leading to attracting flies. Many trans surgeries are very traumatic and painful and take a very long time to heal. Yet the chorus is so happy sounding, despite the pain and trauma of the whole ordeal the problem in their life is gone and they are able to live a happy life afterwards.
Anyways idk if this is actually what they meant by this but as a trans woman I couldn't help but interpret it this way. Who knows maybe it's just a goofy lil song and I'm over-interpreting, and there's really nothing wrong with a goofy song about stuff that doesn't really matter. Laura has many songs about being trans and transition that have helped me greatly in my own, and that's why she is one of my favorite artists. Queen, icon, legend 🏳️⚧️
And to you... This is a great video! I loved your interpretation of the album. I really appreciated your take on 1 million dollars, which I hadn't thought of before but now is totally my interpretation as well.
my thoughts exactly
Yes maam as a trans woman myself i can relate extremly well
I hope I'm not the only one that appreciates your recent output Prof. 6 videos of this length in 6 days sounds intense! I always appreciate you and support everything you put out.
also adding to your thoughts on I Got My Tooth Removed, the gecs seem to have had a fascination with the metaphor of a toothache representing the pain of a failed relationship since their inception, from Fuck Teeth on their 2017 EP which was about getting high and feeling scatterbrained in reaction to being broken up with, to Toothless which was included as a bonus track on the remix album that was about bargaining with the lost lover to keep the pain from setting in, to this song about finally confronting the toothache, trying to deal with it but putting it off and finally removing the tooth and saying goodbye
I love the new Limp Geczkit. Laura Durst and Dylan Borland have created a masterpiece with 10,000 dolla bill y'all. Not only have they resurrected metal core and mall-core candy coated pop punk, but also brought back Ska in a big way. I expect there to be new albums to drop soon from legends like Less Than Gecs, The Gecsy Gecsy Gecstone, and NOGECS that were inspired directly from this album.
I rushed out to buy the cassette to jam all summer of 1998 from the stereo in my '87 Toyota Corolla while I drive cross country to eventually end up at the thumb wrestling world championships in Manitoba.
I'm 43, so I'm appropriate to call old, but I've loved every minute of all the Gecs albums. The obliteration of nostalgia, through forced overexposure to it, in order to build something new and exciting is amazing. Laura and Dylan break up all the songs that hold their memories of being young to put the pieces back together in the greatest of ways where it sounds so distinctly theirs and just shouts at the top of their lungs in their own unique voice.
Well said all around. You should be a music RUclipsr!
@@professorskye I wouldn't have to if you'd cover a few more electronic releases. Keep up the great work Professor!
This album is just so fun and fresh. It kinda feels like I'm in high school again listening to blink 182. Made me forget about back pain for a moment. 10/10
this album made me feel really wise. my immediate reaction as i listened was "this is probably the best music they've made, even though it doesn't feel like the first album, but it doesn't have to, right?" it made me really think about how much the "feeling" of music is connected to nostalgia of the time you spend with it, more than what it sounds like in your ears. when i think back to finding 100 gecs in high school, it was about embracing this weird explosive grating music from the internet, excitedly showing it to my friends and watching it grow on them, until it became the soundtrack to driving around at night to the loud crazy music that made us feel like teenagers. but i'm 20 now, all my friends are away at different colleges, and it wouldn't make sense to expect new music to add on to that same nostalgia, it should just be allowed to form the soundtrack to the memories i've yet to make that i'll be nostalgic for 3 years from now.
If you enjoy this, I HIGHLY suggest the godmother of the hyperpop style, SOPHIE, and her album Oil Of Every Pearl's Uninsides. Lot less 90s but still very much forward thinking, extremely well produced, hard hitting at points but beautiful and euphoric at others. She was an absolute legend, gone way too soon.
this
More new music for me yay!!! Thank you!!
@@shootdang8618 no problem!
You mean his.
@@adamsmith307 No, I mean her. She was a trans woman.
THX sound effect into that sick guitar rift into Sicko Mode rift is probably gonna be the hardest 30 seconds in music this year,
I'm really glad that Gen Z has its own Ween, this band is just killing it
Ween reference for sure. Been thinking that since the first ep
Yea they actually topped 745 as an intro track and I didn’t really expect it happening.
i was just thinkin this about ~w e e n~
100 gecs are millennials
i’m glad i’m not the only person who mentally compared 100 gecs to ween
i liked the first album but I LOVED the new one. it really feels like there's ten times the gecs. it's more focused and polished but still surprising and totally out there. excited to hear what you have to say about it.
Just found this channel two days ago. Loving the videos, very interesting to hear your perspectives on contemporary music and dive into "less accessible" artists like gecs. Keep up the good work!!
Haven't re-listened to an album so much in years. Probably 8 or 9 times now. Every time I'm smiling or finding something new in the production that blows me away. The attention to detail on every stem to mix it up just when you think you've got it nailed down or some niche joke reference to another style or song is incredible.
I used to replay cd's before I could connect a smartphone while driving out of necessity, like back then I'm just setting this on loop.
Beyond that though I'm just heavily connecting with the music, feels nice to be certain it's a 10/10 for me even if it's not for everyone. Just such a fun joyous silly extreme album.
To mention a few specifically, I really like the combination of the gardens crew rap style (enjoy, puzzle, slayter, etc) with sublime in most wanted person. the fast paced singing and attitude of modern break core with the slowed down heavy beats in 757. All the real record scratches and blown out bass noises. So good!
This is the greatest take I've heard on music in such a long time
The more i watch, you just seem liie such an awesome and like, interested person, you are actually trying to stay as switched on as possible, and that effort has paid off, you understand stuff better than most people half your age or younger, you show a genuine interestin music and i love it!
You brought up the 90’s a lot and I am truly shocked you never brought up Ween once. So much of the humor and versatility and energy that is Ween is also in 100 gecs. Now 100 gecs might not be listening to Ween, but I feel like they are both trying to do (not achieve) the same thing.
I am curious, what is Professors Skye relationship to Ween? I am scared it’s not a good one for no connection here.
ALSO the lyric “put emoji’s on my grave” on the first track is super noteworthy imo. There is so many layers in that, I love that line.
I was about to comment how this review reminded of south park and then you said "member berries" and that made me very hyped.
I like how you call hyperpop punk music. It makes a lot of sense, especially considering that one of my favorite hyperpop artists (although like most hyperpop artists it’s debatable whether or not he’s actually hyperpop), called brakence, named his first album “punk2”
Was never really a huge 100 gecs fan. I heard "Money Machine" and a few various songs from them around when 1000 gecs came out, and I thought they were catchy and a really neat concept, but more of a novelty than anything. For some reason though, 10,000 gecs absolutely gripped me. I genuinely love every single song on the album, some more than others, but now I'm deep down the rabbit hole. Ended up watching a 50 minute documentary on them, and now I've actually given 1000 gecs a proper listen and really enjoy that too. Their song "Torture Me" from their EP has been on my repeat rotation every day. I really didn't get it at first, but now they're one of my favorite artists.
Im a fan of Dylan brady and laura making creative things together. Yea every song wont speak to me on the deepest level but i know they have fun in the studio and that sense of fun is contagious for me.
i love this album and i love this review!! thank you
This popped up randomly in my feed and wow this is a truly fantastic video. So many great insights and very entertaining. You deserve a lot more exposure.
HOLY SHIT DUDE I was waiting so hard for the oingo boingo callout on doritos and fritos, for reference, I am a teen highschool student who happened to be really into electronic music and have a best friend really into 80's music. Naturally when he showed me oingo boingo I was blown away, I had simply never heard 80's music that didnt sound plastic to me, and Danny Elfman seemed so real. Anyway anyway anyway when I first heard Doritos and Fritos when it came out as a single I immediately caught the Oingo Boingo esque guitar plucking type sounds and it caught me off guard, but as you can imagine it quickly became among my favorite songs by 100 gecs. I'm not sure how often you get this perspective but while I'm here I might as well provide some personal insight on why I, as a younger generation kid absolutely love this band. A lot of sentiment shared by my generation, albeit some sticklers who seem to hate change, are letting go the idea of "cringe", it doesn't matter how one enjoys something at this point, and I think it is a completely fair way to enjoy something seriously as well as because it's simply funny. Doritos and Fritos for example, made me laugh my ass off at first. The silly off-kilter guitar plucking with the chanting chorus parodying pop songs of so many generations, through the hyperpop lens of turning it up to 11 and making the lyrics so wildly ridiculous was so funny to me. But at the same time, the music all came together in its own unique collage, something that was uniquely 100gecs. It almost felt that being so silly in this particular way, not only represented me but a whole generation, taking up utter absurdity as an alternative to nihilism. Many older generations get caught up in understanding it through "meta-post-postmeta-ironic-squared-to the second degree" when it's not like that to me at all. Rather, the audience shifting perspectives gives it it's meaning entirely. On the surface something can be so ridiculous it's funny, but only when you decide to let them cook and understand the artistry in absurdity, and what that means for our generation did it click for me fully. This is a recent revelation to me tho, and I simply enjoyed them from a production standpoint for the longest time as an electronic music fan and thought their lyrics were funny. I could talk about this for ages, and the idea of absurdity against nihilism has been interesting me lately. On a final note, I didn't know you were a french professor! I'm taking college french courses as a highschooler right now and I plan on going to France soon over the summer :D!!!
I’ve only watched the first five minutes but I just want to say that I much prefer their earlier album, and it’s not because I don’t like what they did on this one. I don’t think that means I’m not a fan. This album was an awesome experience. Hollywood Baby by far my favorite 100 gecs song and I also really like 757 and I got my tooth removed. The only thing is that 1000 gecs had a lot more replay value for me. Wait a second, while typing this I looked back at both albums and realized I like pretty much the same amount of songs from both albums. The biggest difference right now is that 1000 gecs has had more time to grow on me. I think Hollywood baby being a single set my expectations higher than they should’ve been and I expected more bangers. Instead what I got was mostly just weird songs that feel like they were just having a ton of fun making them and being silly without really worrying about what people think or how much they’ll listen to them. Now that I think about it I love them for that. Ok i guess 10000 gecs is just as good as 1000 gecs and I proved myself wrong in the course of writing this comment but I’ll leave it all in I guess lol.
Emotional rollercoaster of a comment I love this
Super insightful review, thank you for putting the time into this. Especially appreciate your analysis of "you’ll never know anything about me".
I love what you said about trusting the artist. It’s a worthwile exercise in open-mindedness.
I really like your definition of Punk music. Not enough people acknowledge that definition and who the punks are in each generation.
Also great point about the distinction between being a fan and being nostalgic. I am glad I have made it to my 30's still being open to new music and artists I already like doing new things. I know early 30's isn't that old but I know a lot of people are pretty set in their ways only liking their old faves before they hit 30.
Loved seeing them earlier this month. Last I saw them was in one of the few shows that could happen in 2020 and they definitely upped their game, really great show. Anthony Fantano's recent review of their New York show does a great job explaining it.
Professor I have to say that you perfectly replicate the thoughts in the back of my mind listening to and taking in the lyrics. The lyrics really are the most underlooked aspect of this album. Like Frog On The Floor and you making the metaphorical representation of the frog being an unsual thing to find on your floor in the 21st century, with urbanization and whatever. With the track being full-on ska it really adds to that.
Hey! I love your videos!!! Thank you for making these!!!
Your comparison of Frog on the Floor to Beastie Boys and TMBG made me so happy since that's exactly what my bandmate and I said today when we were listening to the album.
I for one love the album, my only complaint was it was so short and a lot of the songs I already heard live and as singles so there weren't too many surprises that took me out of my comfort zone like last time. More than anything It makes me excited for the future, hopefully we don't have to wait 4 years for 100,000 gecs lol
I love your channel so much man. Never change.
first time viewing, the way you talk about and express your thoughts is awesome.
this is so insightful, i love listening to you speak
Gotta say thank you so much for turning me on to King Jammy. Wow am I having a good time right now. Also, very late to discovering 100 gecs. I honestly am not a super huge fan of their first record although it is starting to grow on me, listening thru it for like the 3rd time. All that having been said. I absolutely love this album. I think I must have listened to it 10 times thru now. I love every track. And I feel like you perfectly summed up why I like it. I’m not smart enough to articulate why I like what I like most of the time. I feel like you perfectly summed it up.
Also, I loved the some kind of monster reference. It’s just the references it between that are messing with me man.
king jammy is an absolute legend, so glad you mentioned him with most wanted man
Weirdly as someone who hates limp bizkit, I loved Billie knows Jamie. I think it's the lack of Fred Durst that really saves it lol
I totally sat here for 13 minutes not even noticing that you kind of really hadn't even reviewed the album just hearing your thoughts and everything was interesting and honestly this is the perfect content that I would listen to during my drive to work. And yes it was my first time watching lol
Great video, love the concept of this channel. Always been a fan of genre blending music and it's been crazy to experience an anthropological zoomer Mr Bungle becoming one of the most culturally relevant bands of our time. I sense a weird future coming.
I am hoping you review the new Yves Tumor project!!
Next on the docket
@@professorskye yes!! looking forward to it
Hey professor! Really liked this video and specially the point you made on real artists evolving and reinventing themselves because it reminded me of Rojuu, an artist I love and feel has been very underappreciated in the english speaking spheres. He's only 20 but has been a pillar of the underground and experimental scene in Spain. He also came to mind because he represents an entirely digital internet brainrot culture that 100 gecs is equivalent to in America. He started as a music youtuber and later trap artist, but soon grew out of those limits and experimented with more electro, rock and eventually hyperpop sounds that made him more recognized. I was hoping you could check his music out and maybe make a video if you're interested because I have been watching him grow and evolve since the beginning and he never stops surprising me. As always, keep up the great content and thank you!!
i was yt searching "anoles" last week. After that i started seeing 100 gecs on my yt suggestions. On my way to work im jaming apple music and they play 100 gecs and the two connect.. now im a 33yroldhead fan
My Apple Music subscription ran out today, so I had to listen to this album on RUclips. I accidentally had videos on 2x speed and I listened to the whole album without knowing I cut its playtime in half. I didn’t have a second thought until I clicked on this review and prof skye was talking really fast lmao.
this was basically an introductory lecture on metamodernism, great review prof
Also the lyrics being increasingly dadaist is perhaps a sonic thesis of 10k gecs.
Danny devito is a great director! Goes completely overlooked for that. Matilda is a childhood favourite of mine and death to smoochy is great too. Never seen the other one you mentioned, will have to find it
Love your videos
I seems so serendipitous that 10,000 gecs and Scaring the hoes came out at the same time. Both repurpose sounds of the 90s with a distorted glitch punk lense. One took 90s rnb and one took pop punk but playing these albums back to back on repeat since they came out has been so enjoyable
I love this album from start to end. Hollywood Baby is the ringtone of this album as it just gets stuck in it head. Whole album does a great job taking the music of late 90/00s and making it more fun, more exciting & new/hip/now.
Anyone interested in listening to great ska should definitely listen to Jeff Rosenstock’s Ska Dream. Best ska album ever made imo
And if people like hyperpop and ska they need to check out the album My Checkered Future by Eichlers
find it intriguing how one million dollars has that specific text reader you hear on a lot of short form videos these days. maybe just coincidence but it definitely speaks to the hyper-online vibes.
it was rly cool to see all these songs live last year, especially one million dollars
46:12 … I listened to this album for the first time on the same day I watched Everything Everywhere All At Once for the first time and definitely noticed some parallels. Please do a video on that if you have some time.
Great Review! What are your thoughts on the new Yves Tumor album?

Oh wow, didn't realize that. I place ads basically randomly at 8 minute intervals. That sounds pretty annoying!
You're always so real
St. Anger documentary reference, haha.
"It sounds STOCK to my ears."
Everyone like this video prof made so many videos for us
I’d love to see you review EST Gee’s new mixtape, I feel like it’s a really nice mixture of street music and emotional vulnerability
I must push back on the idea that this album is “90’s” because the specific styles of ska and nu-metal they pull from are more prevalent in the 2003-7 time. Looking at their work/what dylan has said I view a lot of what they do as a hyper-concentrated reconstruction of the early 00’s. You hit it on the head with that “crazy frog ringtone pop” because that also speaks to the heart of hyper pop and draingang. It’s grounded in the overdigitized sounds of that time which permeated through all genres in some way.
Funny enough I’ve not clicked with them until this project, 1,000 Gecs never sat with me right but this one balances itself out so well, I love ska and ska adjacent music and this was just so great all around.
As a dedicated gecer this is a win and a good day 👏👏🙌👏🙌🥳🤯❤️🙏🔥✨🔥👍
Both. We’re protected and alienated. It’s on us to build personal connections/community where we can be vulnerable and show people our true selves.
nice “Some Kind Of Monster” reference
that was the best 6 min opening. ty skye
A 50 minute Gecs review from Skye is exactly what I needed today
I listen to the remix album and fell in love with it because of the cheese factor.
This is the most openminding experience I ever had at 2:40 AM trying to sleep in a friend's house because family issues
Thanks teacher, you're the best!!!! (Also, my friends calls you "profesor chocha" for that bad bunny video lmao)
Excellent video as always (I'll say something else next time I know I always say this)
I think the opening riff is more of a reference to Last Resort by Papa Roach, and perhaps secondarily Crazy Train by Ozzy. But great review mate
Album review of the year
This is a bit late, but frog on the floor is def my favorite song in the album, its just so fun its so 100gecs while being so different.
i play 100 gecs in the car for my sisters upcoming baby
I hate the idea of “loving an artist”. love the music, not the people. I don’t know 100 gecs; I like their music but I don’t love them. They are strangers. I liked their old album more… but that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the new stuff. I just don’t like overly silly songs, which is weird coming from a 100 gecs fan lol. But to say people aren’t real fans is just dumb to me. Like no one should be praising an artist just cus. Fans are allowed to have different opinions. You don’t have to like every single thing an artist does to be a fan of the music
If you were disappointed by Natural Born Killers you might like Bones and All. It makes no mention of the media aspect, but the Bonnie and Clyde-esque dark (horror?) romance is definitely there. Plus a soundtrack by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross
My favorite bands are the ones that have challenged themselves over the years, changing and evolving. But I guess I am very old: I really don't get 100 gecs, I think they are absolutely terrible! I loved your Star Wars comparisons and quotes, though, and I'm glad you are able to appreciate something like that.
I wanna suggest a couple albums for you to review! The new Alice Longyu Gao EP (best album title of 2023 period, you will love it). PC music, hyperpop, subversiveness at it's best. In a way it fits well with the Gecs. In a more conventional vein, the new Maes album. Gotta admit, this album doesn't take much risks but many of the tracks have these melancholic piano lines with your typical drill/trap/ternary trap and a cold delivery to match. the lyrics are not outstanding but not awful either. the album has a couple skips but the listen is a whole mood! (pls include this line in your video if you ever review it haha)
Will check out the new Maes. Unfortunately you missed my Gao review! I made it and was asked to remove it, so I did. Great album.
@@professorskye damn I was wondering what you thought about it..
oh no! do you know why it had to be removed? I would've loved to hear you on the album.
@@vincval805 The artist's management was upset with how I presented xem. I totally understand the objections, though I believe that my video was quite good and as supportive as possible.
@@professorskye I don't agree with their move at all. I'm very confused and disappointed. Hope it's not coming directly from ALG themselves..

My favorite song on the new gecs album is the one about a frog
Have I betrayed the great gec god in favor of an amphibian messiah?
I really like the old osno1 stuff a lot too
I think I’m alienated mr skye.
Also listening to this album, I can’t help but go to I Love You Man “slappa da bass” 😂
There is a crime duo film with the two mains are both men and are lovers. I remember watching it with my father in 2006 or something. I think the name is like "Burnt money" or "Plata quemada" or smth. All I remember is that the film was actually fire.
Thank you professor. I'll try. But it's like my friend says if you're trying you're lying. She's a professor too. And she's not actually my friend, she is the wife of an old acquaintance. And he's a rock mason and a christmas-tree farmer. In fact the number one rock mason in the High Country and the second biggest Christmas tree farmer in same. And I can guarantee he's never heard of 100 gecs; although his wife, the professor of painting, may have done. I might also mention that he (Dale) has the hardest fingers of anyone I've ever met. I've held hands with him a number of times. We do that when we pray.
Just wanted to add my 2¢ thay dumbest girl alive is about gender transition and emotions felt during that time which is pretty interesting.
I liked this gecs album more than the last one, it is unironically great!
Geta van fleet = death.
You may not consider yourself an artist, professor. But with bars like that, you got me bothering my wife - who's only trying to hurry and get dressed in the morning because she woke up late - about the corruption of nostalgia.
So, you know. Artist shit
As for the pajorative terms we don't recognize in the moment, I've been saying for a couple years now that "crazy" will soon be looked at as unacceptable. Especially with how much discussion around mental health there is now a days.

Give me those Fritos and Doritos!
anyone else remember Infectious grooves? Yeah that was a fun Rock funk band.
Frog on the Floor = Ska + The Dead Milkman
the fascist death drive of nostalgia seems so strong under our accelerating media culture but my Will To GEC is stronger
regarding a natural born killers film where the lovers are men: there is this argentinian movie from 2000 called Burnt Money that kind of fits that idea. But sadly it’s not that great.
some kinda monster! awesome movie
I think 100 gecs and Fred Penner should collab for a "Frog on the Floor" remix.
Nah, during COVID you could rank chips on Twitch with them, which I did, but it feels like a neutering of the guy and the girl not quite bring up to snuff
I started liking 100 gecs the exact same way your son did
