  • Can an album this good also be her worst? I think so, but I'm always open to discussion. If this reaches 6K views I'll cover the rest of the bonus material. ‪@TaylorSwift‬

    So I don't usually comment anything, but I feel the need to defend Blank Space, hahah! The lyrics are satirical, using all the ways the media and the general public would criticize and characterize her for her dating life, as this manipulative, men-hunting woman, "catching" men to only write songs about them, not being able to "keep" them and being overly emotional and "crazy". Basically - what if all these things they were saying about her were true, and what if she wrote a song from that person's perspective. She talks about it in her acoustic Grammy Museum performance, which I would highly recommend!
    Also, the Starbucks thing is like a running joke in the fandom, haha. The actual lyrics are: 'got a long list of ex-lovers, they'll tell you I'm insane'. But a lot of people here 'lonely Starbucks-lovers'. I think a lot of the older swifties (including me) find it very funny that she decided to keep it in her new version!

      So I'm not the only one who misheard the "Starbucks lovers".:) "Blank Space" was the first Taylor song I fell in love with. It's so catchy and so full of sarcastic and quotable lyrics and such an effective reduced to the core production. Pop perfection! And yes, the Grammy Museum performance is great!

    AVAA!
    TBH there's a lot of context about this album that you wouldn't get if you didn't read the original album liner notes or live through that time. For example, Welcome to New York isn't just about moving to NYC, it's her metaphor for moving from country music to pop music. And TBH I see it as being optimistic about huge changes happening in your life and being like "Hey, I might be an outsider but I'm made for this. I will not feel like an imposter. Instead, I'll approach this like a reinvention." Blank Space was an exercise of satire. I agree that some lyrical specificity was lost bc she used a broader brush (Bad Blood, HYGTG, AYHTDWS to an extent), but she really experimented with sound, songwriting methods and cadence here which I appreciate. And thematically it also showed her growing into an adult because there's a lot more moral ambiguity here than she'd expressed before.

    Blank Space is a satire about how the media portrayed her at a time! I also thought “Starbucks lovers” at the time lol but it’s “got a long list of ex-lovers” ;-)
    She did a special listening session for the Grammy’s that’s on RUclips, where she goes through how some of the songs were made, showing studio footage and some voice notes of the songs’ inceptions. Plus there’s some acoustic performances at the end, including Wildest Dreams on electric guitar which is AMAZING. Highly recommend you check that out! It also gives a lot of context to the overall story.
    I totally agree with you about the story aspect of this album which, in retrospect is lacking. To give some Swiftie perspective on why that is: 2014 Taylor is not the Taylor we know today whose media presence is strategic and deliberate. At that time her private life was extremely public as she was just entering the pop sphere. So everyone at the time knew the lore behind all the songs via the media. So I still think there is a lot of story to this album, it’s just not in the lyrics. To me this album is super meta in that way because everyone knows who she’s talking about and the exact situation that played out too. There is, I think, a purposeful lack of explanation which gives most of the songs a super cheeky quality to them. But I think the whole pop album being so very much centered around pop culture, with HER being the centre of pop media at the time, makes the whole thing absolutely iconic and justifies the larger than life, romantic quality of the music!
    WTNY does suck though, but she embraces being a corny gal so I’ll let her have it.

    First of all, its 'got a long list of ex lovers' and nothing to do with starbucks.
    In Style, 'and i got that red lip classic thing that you like'.
    And in shake it off, its 'heartbreakers gonna break break break break' and has nothing to do with break dancing😂
    Lastly, funny you found out about taylor and harry at the end of the album because almost the entire album is about their relationship. I mean the song is called style 😅

    AVAA 😂👍 always enjoy you Taylor review videos. Blank Space is a satire song. It’s related to how the media always portray her as a psycho serial dater that keeps dating many men for a short period. The blank space is just a silly thing about how she has a book of names of people she has dated (which is not true)😂 I think…

  • @QuillPGall

    AVAA! Some general thoughts throughout this review:
    •I was not expecting you to reference Sheetz in this video. As a bumblefuck, PA resident, I appreciate it haha.
    •I don’t get the “new york city!” reference, but it made me think of Cowboy Nudes by Geese.
    •The “starbucks lover” was a joke back in 2014 as it’s a mondegreen. The lyric is “got a long list of ex lovers”.
    •Style is my favorite song off the original, but the remake sucks a lot of the life and passion out of the vocal performance. This kind of production is also very hard to remake properly as opposed to the organic instrumentation of her first few records. That being said, I fully get why you won’t listen to the old versions.

    P.S. I am certain you would appreciate this album more with more listens because the lyric you highlighted in Style "he can't keep his wild eyes on the road" isn't just about him looking at her. It's about him having a wandering eye in their relationship. This is such a brilliant lyric in a song about two people who keep breaking up and coming back to each other. And the character growth is so intriguing. We go from Taylor admonishing a guy for wanting to cheat in Red (look at "Girl At Home") to the following lyrics:
    'I say, "I heard that you've been out and about with some other girl, some other girl"
    He says, "What you heard is true, but I can't stop thinkin' 'bout you and I"
    I said, "I've been there too a few times" '

      By the way I would LOVVVEE for you to review the vault songs!!!They actually remind me A LOT of Midnights and my personal opinion is that most of the Midnights album was conceived at the same time that 1989 was, but perhaps too edgy for an artist transitioning from country to pop to put out at the time. The bones of Midnights were born in this era. I think the biggest difference between the two albums is the Midnights is a reflection of TS, the person who already is a pop icon, and 1989 is an image (Polaroid perhaps?) of ephemeral pop iconography, before she made it her own.
      Love your content! Please please please review the vault 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

      and not having the correct lyrics is really a problem. Absolutely, I was thinking this review is off because he is a man. Then Skye admits he was raised misogynistic. Not knowing Style is about Harry Styles in a most positive way although many, if not most, people do not pick up that the song is very complementary.

  • @jujuka488
    @jujuka488 11 месяцев назад +4

    Heyy! I see you got the context of the year (2014) to analyze the songs, but I believe you lack the Taylor context for that time!
    Blank Space is a satire about how the media treated her as a serial dater, she views it as a character; I believe that with this context the lyrics you brought up can be considered a successful arrow hahahahahahha
    Wildest dreams was the first direct reference to sex she had ever made at that point, the fans that first listened to it at her house on a secret session report that she even blushed when it played, since she was very reserved at that time.
    How you get that girl is.....not great. But really it's exacly what 2013/2014 Taylor would write, since she was still understanding what society was doing and how she could fight back.
    Many people thought the vault track "slut!" would be this feminism anthem, but, like you, didn't add the context that this is 2014 Taylor we're talking about. Someone that thought Blank Space was the best she could do to stand up for herself. So when we listen to "slut" it's not really a surprise that's a love song.
    Also I love you calling her out on her privillege on NY HAHAHHAHHAHAHA
    Oh and about being relatable, I'm a 24yo woman, Brazilian (Sorry about any mistakes written) that can relate to this album, apart from the NY piece haha
    And if it helps, Taylor herself is really tall, so the tall part in wildest dreams is because it's hard for her someone being "so tall"

  • @kiroolioneaver8532
    @kiroolioneaver8532 11 месяцев назад +3

    You're right on about the production and the lyrics which is why this (and I feel "reputation" will also face this) will probably be the worst of the Talyor's versions. I think because her first four albums were more country and acoustic-based, hearing her mature vocals and mature self singing lyrics she had written when she was younger with added wisdom makes those TVs pop more (which is also why the more overproduced tracks on "Red (Taylor's Version) like "I Knew You Were Trouble" and "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" are the worst on that project).
    I think sarcastic Swfit is cool in that it shows she can be publicly self-deprecating ("Blank Space"; "Shake It Off"; and a lot of "reputation"; and "Anti-Hero") but I think because she still holds back from going a full 100% (you can tell it's more that she's pretending to smile in order to appear like the critiques don't bother her or to take the high road; many have talked about Taylor's "victim complex") it doesn't fully land as well as they perhaps were intentioned to (though they are catchy as hell and a good listen).
    And yeah, your line about "Welcome to New York" ("It's waiting for her, it's waiting for Bezos' kids, it's just not waiting for you") 100% spot on. "Welcome to New York" is very much someone who grew up in a small town yet has the money to move to New York and and live in Brooklyn or Manhattan and treat the place like it's the Emerald City whereas a lot of people living in poverty who rarely leave their boroughs wouldn't see NYC the same way. I agree that Taylor really begins to learn to stick this landing of marrying her larger than life lifestyle and persona with relatability in a pop context on "Lover" and the subseqent projects so we can't entirely fault her 24-year old self for not doing it 100% perfectly the first time lol
    Favourite tracks on this project definitely are "This Love"; "Clean" and "Wonderland."

    the main difference between the 🛴 version and the tv is that Max Martin didn't come back to produce the songs he produced in the 🛴 version, and most of these songs sound worse, especially style.
    you're not the first person to notice the lana del rey influences in this album especially in wildest dreams, the first person I ever heard notice that is the guy from the channel the swiftologyst.
    I predicted the way you might've felt about this album anf not getting that blank space isn't biographical but satirical, and one of the reasons why it might happen that you will not get that reputation is partially a persona album.
    1989 and reputation have in common that they aren't her best albums (not even her worst) but she needed them to shift the perception that the public had of her and without them all the other albums we had after wouldn't exist.
    about eroticism in taylor's music the vaults of this album are full of that.

    Hi professor Skye, I don't think all your videos are awesome, nor do I think you're always being pretentious. I did love this Taylor review, particularly. As per usual, you raise some excellent points and your misheared lyrics are endearingly funny (although the Startbucks line is commonly misheard). I hope you do listen to the 2023 deluxe version, regardless of whether you reach 6K views. You've missed out on so many lyrical gems by skipping the OG deluxe songs, (one of which is called New Romantics, so a prof.Skye take on that should be interesting), and the vault songs. Not sure whether you'll like the Kendrick addition to Bad Blood; we, Swifties, are generally very fond of it.

    AVAA-this is probably one of the most fair analyses of 1989 that I’ve seen. It’s how I felt as a teenage fan in 2014 and how I feel now; it’s a good album, but it’s just blatantly sub-par compared to her more singer-songwriter instincts. Truthfully, I think it comes across as a disingenuous project for her, as you can hear how it’s more of a grab for universal, commercial acclaim than her previous work. But as you say, still an excellent pop album! It’s important to acknowledge that we can question its lyric quality AND still respect/enjoy the project.

    39:30 a contributor on lyric genius points out that there’s another track on the album with the lyric “loose lips sink ships,” so it’s almost a callback where the wordplay is with lose and loose.
    Also when I hear the word grip I tend to think of the people in charge of set-up, lighting, rigging, etc. on film sets; so a grip could be the thing keeping the ship’s rigging together, i.e. keeping the relationship from falling apart. The only problem is that ship crews don’t use the term grip for that role.

    I genuinely think this is her best re-record, I loved Red and I do not think she did Red (or Fearless) justice because of issues with some emotion not translating completely. 1989 is the only one that has either adequately matched the track production/vocals or elevated the production/vocals on every track.
    If you’re talking about your understanding of her lyrics compared to before, I can understand it because she really tried to depersonalize her lyrics and reinvent herself with this album. She intentionally left off more specific story telling with this album.

    Taylor Swift is omnipotent at this moment. As a white guy in his mid 20s. Try to flirt with white woman and some of white gays. Yes I'm Bisexual. They keep me posted on Taylor lure . I listen to Folklore and evermore and Midnights. I think when wrap up of this doing her money grab phase of her career. Her next project be her best she hasn't scored about 80%- 88% from me. But I'm a Music nerd that listen to Perfume Genius and Bjork and Kate Bush.

    AVAA (and maybe a little PVAA :P ) - I'll be posting a few comments because ADHD means if I wait to the end of the video I won't remember everything I wanted to say. your comments on the rap influences are really funny given that reputation, the next album she released, is by far the most influenced by rap and hip hop. she's always had some influence there, though - the tragic irony of the kanye-taylor thing is that college dropout was the first album she ever bought with her own money, and she was a huge fan of his before everything went down.
    as other people have pointed out, blank space is satire - kind of important to know, since her next album reputation leaned HEAVILY into this type of satire. also quick notes on lyrics you misheard: "starbucks lovers" is "lost list of ex-lovers", "brad pitt classic" is actually "red-lipped classic", and "breakers gonna break" is "heartbreakers gonna break". alright, back to watching the video!

    Completely get your point there. Personally, experiencing the transition from Speak Now to Red to this was hard for me. I found most the simple basic repeatative lyrics irritating and it took many many many listens for this album to grow on me. The exceptions were the slow songs like Clean and This Love which I have been obsessed with since the first listen. I like to say it'll never be my favorite album but it still has a couple of my all time favorite songs on it. IMHO part of the appeal fans have to this one comes from the lore of most of it being about Harry Styles who is like the male counterpart to Taylor. I can see if you're not a 20/30 something female that none of that would matter to you. Btw Rep is widely loved by swifties. It may have gotten mixed reviews by press but we adore it. Definitely my favorite album. I think you'll appreciate it as a better marrying of beats, rap-like cadences, and lyrics. Parts are a giant FU to Kanye/Kim (our girl loves getting revenge) but the rest is a love story disguised as a darker synth sound. It makes me feral. 😍 And that's coming from someone who deeply loves the folk albums too. Very curious what you'll think of it.

      Based on the title, I think he's going to be comparing the re-recordings to the originals, and 1989 is by far the worst of the Taylor's Versions.
      The production and mixing on this one just seems off. It seems to be the general consensus when you get away from stan twitter. Not having Max Martin involved seemed to hurt every single song he produced.

      @@DJKurohi'm a hardcore Swiftie but Style Taylor's version is honestly disappointing..the emotion in her voice is gone , the guitar riff at the beginning seems off , important details like " some other Girl "
      " hmmm "
      Are Different, the song in general sounds so off , the production is louder than her voice , it's just not the same ):

    • @DJKuroh
      @DJKuroh 11 месяцев назад +1

      @Unknown-jf5sk A lot of fans were worried about this as the albums got newer and newer.
      People also think that just because you're re-recording, you'll make "better" decisions when it's just as easy to completely mess up.

      Unless something's changed recently, he hasn't listened to the original album. He only started listening intentionally to Taylor when Lover came out. He's liked every album so far, and since he's reviewing this album on the channel, I assume he also liked (bits of) this project. My guess is that he went in expecting more lyrically and was underwhelmed by songs like Bad Blood, Shake It Off, How You Get The Girl etc.? I love this channel, and I love Taylor's music/art very much. When a new Taylor review by professor Skye drops, I'm inevitably curious about his take, but also anxious about the things he'll get wrong this time. @@DJKuroh

    • @DJKuroh
      @DJKuroh 11 месяцев назад +3

      @annaarampatzis1079 That's a good point! I definitely could see an argument from a songwriter's perspective and saying it's her worst lyrically (at this point in her career), but it's aided by unique and varied song concepts, stellar production, and overall effect on pop music trends as a whole.
      I think saying anyone's musical take is "wrong" is a judgmental way of looking at anyone's musical opinion and is bound to end up with hurt feelings.

Sorry man. It wasn't a hit. The research was less the effort was less. By the end of video I really couldn't say AVAA. You missed a lot. Like a lottttt!! Some of your criticisms are valid and I agree with you that this is her going pop but not figured out yet the Taylor Swift definition of pop. She redefined pop songwriting in so many ways and this was the beginning. Definitely it's not the best of her pop work but honestly all it makes sense. This was her figuring out pop. (sadly the next is reputation that doesn't get better but lover is the actual next move) I think you need to sit with the album more. Bcoz tell me do u think Taylor after making an album like Red would do something mindless like this???

    i think “you’re still all over me like a wine stained dress i can’t where anymore” is an arrow to the heart and one of her all time best lyrics, but maybe if you’ve never spilled wine on a dress or tried to get it out you it doesn’t resonate as much

  • @Maggielesetoiles6
    @Maggielesetoiles6 11 месяцев назад

    The wine stains come up in other songs - the only way I’ve made sense of this is to imagine she left out all the middle hits which is that she’s IN the wine strained dress and has to keep wearing it (like at an event) but she’ll never be able to wear it again

    Phew😅 finally a fan on my level - I will personally acknowledge that 1989 is a quintessential and excellent pop album - it has always been my LEAST favourite of a Taylor’s albums. Having said that - this re-record is SO exciting because her vocals make it more palatable than the original and I’m enjoying this so so much - it’s analogous to her songwriting in general - even her worst songs IMO aren’t “bad”’songs - they just aren’t good. I mean but 1989 is - really good…. 😅 😝

    There is no such thing as a bad Taylor Swift album tbh. Each album in her discography have played their own significant role in order to catapult her into the level of success and praise that she rightfully deserves. There is a reason why 1989 is referred to as a pop bible, I mean 1989 is well on its way to sell a million copies TWICE. Ntm it is the most awarded pop album.
