    As Beyoncé said herself when she released this album, it is not only a tribute to her late Uncle Johnny who died of AIDS, but also a tribute and remembrance to the "fallen angels" of club culture. The black and queer revolutionaries of dance music that pushed the boundaries to get us where we are today. I truly believe this is her best work to date.

      +1 the album also for the "kids", which is us queer folks (in honoring her late Uncle Johnny). I feel like the Professor could've done a bit more research before putting this video out. I'm not mad at his take or anything -- it's just that every time he says "I'm not sure who this was for...?" or "i don't know who she's talking about?" I'm just want to shout at my computer "it's for the queer community!" It's more of a "me" problem lol

      The black and queer revolutionaries of dance music that pushed the boundaries to get us where we are today. BOOM. 🔥 I think Kylie has appropriated gay culture more and that might land me in trouble with many gay men. 🤣This is Beyonce's culture as a black woman. Respect.

    Just want to note one thing: the ending of heated is the ultimate dedication to black and brown queer ballroom culture. The “rap” style she’s doing is called chanting, which is usually perfected during voguing competitions. The clapping are the slapping open of hand fans that are often downed by attendees of the balls. And, as many have stated, uncle Johnny was a close gay figure Beyoncé’s life. Many people in the ballroom scene make their own clothes for competitions. The album is truly thoughtful and beautiful.

      @@professorskye ohh and ONE lasttt thing hehe. the ending of Pure/Honey made me weep and play it OVER & OVER due to the sampling of Moi Renee's "Miss Honey"! This track is a deep cut classic by a performer who passed away and to my knowledge was the only track they EVER released(check out Franklyn Fuentes too). So for someone at the caliber of Beyonce to randomly yet methodically sample this deep cut for a seconddd bringing light to these "fallen angels" (plus it being a track ive djed & danced to with friends for years)made me legit cry out of happiness. Her homages to some underground legends on this album is truly touching art in of itself. Preach! I'm 50 ... I feel you! I grew up with Grace Jones in my ears and could pick that voice out of a crowd in Times Square! She will always be a part of our history, and needs someone to shine light on her. These young folks don't know what they've missed with Ms. Jones!! The groove behind Pull Up To the Bumper is something I can play on loop, and that's only one of the more popular gifts she gave us. It's her B-side, Studio 54 - level stuff that really drops you though. We need her back! God bless Bey for paying homage, and for doing Ms Grace a solid in including her.

    Not a usual commenter, but I see this critique about the term Queen so much I thought I would address it. The problematic nature of fandoms is a valid point about artists and their fans, however Queen in our community is bigger than that. Black men often greet me as Queen and I respond with King. So in the constant references of AAVE in her speech and works, it means something different than in the fandom. What we are hearing is a aggregation of the two.
    Throughout her albums, she also refers to herself as King Bey, and there is some discussion among the feminists spaces about the androgeny of her intentionally taking on male and female titles, much in the way Hatshepsut did in Egypt during the 18th dynasty.
    Also, if you know anything about Beehives, the term makes complete sense as the emphasis is not only the shifting of patriarchal concepts of work and power, but on putting the focus on the woman. I think she's a feminist light in some regards.
    The "Church Girl" sample is from Twinkie Clark, of the prolific Clark Sisters. The Carters sample them a great deal and Beyonce uses them frequently in the way she stacks her harmomies. The Clark Sisters are important in Black History because they were initially shunned by their church for daring to crossover into pop and for sampling Stevie Wonder in a gospel song (You Brought the Sunshine). I think she's intentional in the decision, considering the subject of the song and the similarities in the repercussions she may face. I didn't read it as a sex song; I read it as a middle finger to purity culture and the restrictions on Black women in religion.
    Personally, I thought "Plastic Off the Sofa" was referencing a condom. 🤷🏾‍♀️
    Finally (whew), I'm surprised no reference to the nods to Prince here...they're everywhere. You can hear it in the multitude Diamonds and Pearl references and in "Alien Superstar" and "Honey."
    Solid review...blessings

    There’s a difference between reggaeton and Afro beats. The song “Move” was heavily influenced by Afro Beats. I see many using Reggaeton as a catch all. Tems was also beautiful on Move alongside Grace Jones. “Heated” also heavily influenced by Dancehall and Afro beats.

    At the end of the song "Heated" where referenced Beyoncé saying "Eat it, eat it" and everything that follows, is inspired by "commentating" which comes from Ballroom culture. And on "Pure/Honey" the man you hear in the beginning is a sample of "Cunty" by Kevin Aviance and the end of the song is a sample Moi Renee's "Miss Honey". They're both are/were drag performers.

  • @keithestraier-coetzee5487
    @keithestraier-coetzee5487 Год назад +5

    Great review! Some interesting auxiliary information/facts as the case may be;
    1. On the opening track, Beyoncé affirms she is "un-American" and doesn't need friends... gives that section different context :)
    2. Cozy in its entirety is a triple entendré for misogynoir in general, an uplifting anthem for LGBTQI folk(Beyoncé makes an entire verse wherein she lists the colours of the Progress Pride Flag) and finally affirmation for Black and Brown Trans women as members of the female community in the face of transphobia (it is notable that the song features the work of two Trans Stars: DJ Honey Dijon in a production and compositional role, and TS Madison, whose voice is prominently sampled during the chorus of the song). The same could be said of ALIEN SUPERSTAR and Beyoncé describing herself, Drag Queens, Ballroom Culture and the wider LGBTQI community in particular :)
    3. Church Girl, to me at least, is an intersectional Gospel/Soul song... the triggerman beat doesn't detract from the message of self love and perhaps coyly addressing the patriarchal suppression of female sexuality within the church as well as addressing the link between "secular" music and its religious/spiritual counterpart. In this regard, I'd use the life stories of Aretha Franklin, Grace Jones, Donna Summer and Beyoncé herself as a case-in-point.
    4. Plastic Off The Sofa, in my experience as a jazz musician is primarily a Funk song, hence why it harkens to Marvin Gaye and other genre bending artists. The Jazz vocals (i.e., the ethereal jazz runs she does to close out the song), dominant bass arpeggios, a focus on polyrhythmic percussion and rhythm and the use of 7ths and 9ths (notes) all over bear testimony to that too :D
    5. This album is immense. And as you rightly stated, dense!! I keep discovering things every single time I give it a spin... it is simply delightful for an audiophile like me! The lack of time signatures and melodic convention across most of the album is also an underappreciated achievement in... I guess you could say, 'Reinventing the four-on-the-floor'!
    Really appreciate your deep delve, keep up the push for casual musical pedagogy for all of the consumers out there! ❤

    I really do appreciate people who really understand music history and theory reviewing music on RUclips because it helps me as an artist see and hear things that I never would think of. However , I feel as though you could have done A LOT more research into firstly Beyonce's catalog for this review and secondly the communities and styles of music she is referencing throughout this piece. Regarding COZY ,the person speaking isn't a man at all its TS Madison a woman of trans experience thats an icon and personality to the queer community who even in her short clip may be referencing a film/book "Precious" (a film that said a lot about black culture good and bad) when she says "fluorescent beige" which is Precious' favorite color in the book. Furthermore, when she starts the section that has "p***sy pink" she goes on to list the other colors of what is the modern pride flag ending it with "rainbow gelato in the streets which is possibly even a reference to stonewall.Tracks like Alien Superstar, Break My Soul, Pure/Honey,Heated she is undoubtedly speaking to the queer community with the samples she uses in the music Big Freedia's (pronounced FREE-DA ,another trans woman who's a queer icon) Explode for Break My Soul . The sampling of queer ballroom icon Kevin Aviance for Pure/Honey .In addition, the fact that pure might be a reference to a medication gay men take for sex 😭. It also makes sense as to why the album is sooo sexually liberating because the queer community IS a sexually liberated community whether people like that or not.You and so many others say "I don't know who she's talking to" but it's almost painfully obvious but maybe that because its for us. Anywaysss, I def think her Kanye and Drake are in cahoots of some sort the way they are always referencing each other sonicallyOther than that this was a great review and I definitely need need to take another listen Bowie, Daft Punk, Diana and more!

    I wonder how Prof's views this album now that its intended predecessor (Cowboy Carter) is out...I re-listened to Renaissance after Cowboy Carter and some of the "American/un-American" references hit a bit differently. His revelations about Beyonce being or not being a pop artist belies the fallacy of the genre system. For a lot of black folks, we always felt like pop was arbitrary, a place where they put the white folks who sing very R&B inspired songs and the one or two black artists that media has deemed to be pop. 90s - 2000s R&B, which is the space a lot of her music inhabits, is steeped in sexy talk. I think you limit yourself in trying to tie 100% of her songs to her and Jay-Z's relationship. She isn't Taylor Swift. Parts are true to her and other parts are just persona/imagination (like the Sasha Fierce alter-ego she used to have)
    The call and response stuff now feels like a callback to where it first gained popularity in gospel which is highly utilized in Cowboy Carter.

    Some solid thoughts here but I think some even basic research of the album/artist should've been done - as others have stated it's a black, queer album, and the lyrical content/themes of the album support that. For example, the "pussy pink" line you didn't understand was Bey referencing the pride progress flag (as you can hear with the other colors mentioned too). Also, Big Freedia's name is pronounced "Free-duh" not "Fruh-de-uh" lol. I appreciate that you tackle diverse music and recognize your place as a cis/het/white man but doing that 20 mins of research in addition to listening to the albums would yield content that's respectful of the artist and communities you're discussing. Keep up the good work, Skye!

      @Quat Mann If you stopped to think, you may have had the decency and wherewithal to open with a question and I could explain what I meant, but you're quick to judge for some strange reason.
      I am referring to Black Americans distancing our history from queer Blackness. People like Marsha P, Laverne Cox, RuPaul, don't get mentioned as or respected as those who made/make Black history. Cishetero Black people don't consider queer Black folks as part of "Black history," this apparent record of historical achievements of Black people throughout America.
      Now leave me alone asshole.

    Great review, while I did enjoy the album, I found the production to be too carbon copy. I think that just maybe due to my nature in listing to new music and alway hearing the nods/and references and wanting their interpretation (or interpolation) of that sound. Would have really loved more play with the instruments(particularly bass), but then again it’s my issue with most Beyoncé albums, they kind of force you to see her on tour to get the full version.

    I almost feel like the single Break My Soul almost felt out of place because It’s such a pedestrian house fusion track for radio programmers compared to the complex dense layers and textures throughout the rest of the project. House fusion tracks are all over the radio in my country so it’s nothing groundbreaking here.
    My biggest critique of the album is the amount of rapping and lack of *huge vocal* moments she is capable of. She was once called the Queen of R&B, but R&B as a genre is on life support from every popular r&b entertainer wanting to be a rapper just because rap artists outsell R&B artists nowadays. She can do any genre but always at her core she is an R&B artist, it’s her essence. Maybe it’s just my bias bc I never liked rap Beyoncé, or any exceptional vocalist deciding to become a rapper for that matter.
    P.s. I kinda get annoyed when I frequently hear white listeners accuse the black divas of ‘over-singing’ just because the vast majority of white/non-black artists don’t (AND CANT) sing in that melismatic style because they don’t have the soul nor the vocal range nor the vocal agility. It comes from Gospel. It comes from the black church. I just find it hilarious when white listeners sneer and eye roll at our greats doing a black singing style when their favourite white singers would fall flat on their faces attempting it, they would need 10,000 hours more vocal practice. I don’t understand why it doesn’t command more respect when it’s so difficult to do.

    • @furstnaymelassnaim9206

      This part. I hate it when people say over singing. I grew up and come from a gospel background and it’s a requirement for me to hear almost anytime I want to hear great vocals. I agree, there weren’t many “big” vocal moments in this album but in hindsight I don’t think it would’ve worked in this realm. It wouldn’t fit all that well sonically. The reason why I feel r&b is dying is because they’ve all gone to this “dark” sound to try and fit in. But r&b started out with such a light sound and thumping grit. Now a days it just sounds like Singers whining about their sex life over a “dark” beat.

    • @nameisamine
      @nameisamine 2 года назад +1

      @@furstnaymelassnaim9206 i saw a tweet saying: ‘R&B is essentially dead and has been replaced by socially awkward people humming’. It’s so funny how r&b singers went from being extroverted larger than life entertainers to being shy introverts over the past 15 years.
      I disagree that bigger vocals would have been out of place. House music has always been associated with BIG DIVA POWERHOUSE VOCALS. I watched a documentary about House music recently and they drew attention to that. I thought a house song would allow Beyoncé to go-all out with massive vocals etc. nonetheless the vocal production throughout this album is fantastic, especially on the more jazzy moments.
