I always choose your reviews over Fantanos, these go more in depth and cover not just the music, but the artistic aspects of the album. You also always keep such an amazingly open mind about new rappers like Destroy Lonely, Playboi Carti, and Yeat. As a young adult I love to see their art being assessed as what it is, great art 🤗 AVAA

AVAA! I'm a trans man and yeah, i was really disappointed while watching the premiere, not because I thought you had a duty to say something about the bar, but because I was really curious and excited to hear your in-depth analysis of it and the nuance that you're able to bring. I'm glad you added the addendum, you're doing a hell of a lot better than most cis dudes would. Hearing this bar reminded me of the DuBois quote about double consciousness (not to say that being trans can be even remotely compared to being black in America). I heard it as myself of course and was hurt to know that Cole subscribes to/platformed such a, as you said, "bunk" framework, but I also heard it from the perspective of a cis guy. If I were a cis guy, I would have definitely just not even heard or thought about it a second time after hearing it, and if i stumbled onto online discourse about it, my impression would be the same narrative that happened with Dave Chappelle; If I hadn't already put in years of working to unlearn transphobia and bioessentialism that's baked into society, I would think that Cole was being unjustly criticized by haters that don't understand his art. That's the real insidious part to me, is knowing that's the takeaway the average Joe is going to get from the situation, and I think your addendum might change that for some, so I really appreciate it a lot.

Coming back to this now after the Kendrick/Drake beef, I feel like Drake was hoping to have a little farce, retro throwback battle and Kendrick just got disgusted by him appropriating dead rappers for this little exercise, which made them ridiculous , like the live action version of Cats, it was deeply disrespectful of rap history and he needed to be smacked down hard. I completely agree with your point in the missed opportunities video, that he should have gone after Drake's music, like bragging about impregnating and abandoning poor women of color. To spotlight that, would have been all he needed.

I see your 'Kendrick/J Cole beef is history repeating as farce" and I raise a
"This is the prelude to Rap World War I"
Bc Kendrick/Drake have real problems and they won't be boxing with headgear on.
Several low temperature beefs have been brewing around Drake, but Kendrick has made the situation hot, and now alliances will be forced to defend their sides until everyone is involved.
I thought it was a fun meme to address it as a rap civil war brewing, but after Cole threw that sub out at Future, understandable given the situation, there's no way that Future doesn't respond.
And given that apparently Ross is now on the outs with Drake, he could get involved and basically everyone who's ever had a problem with Drake might get open with the disses. Now Cole definitely has a side picked and his people could get involved.
This is all idle, fun speculation, but hey, if history is repeating itself, maybe...?
EDIT: J Cole apologized. This might still be for something, depending on how Kendrick takes it. And most of this idle speculation depends on Drake, but w/o J Cole's involvement it's not World War I, just regular civil war.

For more context on this mixtape, in late February Cole released a 2 minute snipped of the track now known as Crocodile Tears and did like a mini doc about his journey to the Fall Off.

AAVA! I really really appreciate your allowing of a trans person to speak about the transphobic bar before you and following up the perspective of one of us with your own perspective. it feels authentic and conveys that you actually care about these issues. while the main victim of the bar is a hypothetical trans man and general trans people all around i think its important to have both trans and cis voices talking about it with an importance on the trans voices. now me personally idk if Cole is a transphobe who is specifically attacking us or whether hes just ignorant and is being reactionary but i do think it is interesting how a man who's portrayed himself and seen as a wise conscious rapper can be so loose lipped with these kinda things (there is the track where he drops a lot of f slurs and asks how he can be homophobic when he supports gay marriage a la Eminem). but nonetheless great video as always!

On the Kendrick/Cole beef: there is a video by a channel, 'whatisthedirt' that predicted that Kendrick would respond to First Person Shooter. He released the video approx a week before Like That dropped. He cited what a lot of people considered flimsy evidence, I was one of those, but he clearly ended up being 100% right.
So it might be good to check out for further context.
    BUT
I would be 100% down for historical revisionism stating that Kendrick got mad that Cole was friendly to him. It's the only historical revisionism I'm down for, actually.

  • @ME-gs6yn
    @ME-gs6yn 4 месяца назад +5

Hold me to this, I believe when Kendrick responds we will see the beef runs deeper than what we currently understand. This may be complete projection but I think Kendrick looks at Cole as a dirty preacher character. A lot of air about social justice but lacking any substantive message underneath. If I were Kendrick, given his dedication to the craft and his beliefs, I would be looking at Cole as an imitator

    • @jm6406

Thank you for the addendum. I subscribed. Trans men generally don’t menstruate (except before or in the very early stages of transition) and somehow that the bar doesn’t make sense bothers me about it. Come at me with a diss that actually hits if you want to go there. My interpretation is that if someone who cares about being clever with his analogies doesn’t even think twice about whether or not the punchline works just doesn’t care about the lived reality of being a trans man at all. And it’s a mirror for society, e.g. when I disclose that I am trans, people usually assume I want to transition into a woman because they don’t understand that trans men actually look, sound, smell and are built like MEN because we are men. We just may have a smaller dick and some breast tissue if we’re pre OP. The whole experience is belittling and I don’t need to explain how emasculation feels. That is something you and I have both felt and I actually appreciate cis men talking about that in the context of trans male „issues“ because for me, it’s the worst part about being a man who was born without a penis. And hearing other men voice their sympathies makes it uniting instead of putting me in another category again. It may be worth noting that daylyt has voiced heavily transphobic views (link) so it could be that Cole actually shares those if he wrote that uninspired shit and invited him for a feature and my interpretation of him just not caring is too benign.

That doesn't seem quite right for Cole.
On the Off-Season Documentary, Cole speaks on not feeling fulfilled with what he'd done so far. He'd gotten too comfortable, he was convinced he hadn't fully explored his skillset.
This might not be the same thing as having something to prove, bc it seems like he's proving something to himself, not other people, but I'm not sure if it's an important distinction.

AVAA. My take on J. Cole's music (especially his albums) and him as an artist has always been that he is a pseudo-woke rapper whose narratives and messages across his catalogue are severely lacking, shallow, and sound nothing less than a menagerie of platitudes and quintessential woke narratives that are in no way original and stimulating in the context of sonic experience. KOD was the lowest moment in his career in this regard to the point where it felt like he was letting his ego and holier-than-thou persona get the better of him as an artist with the fake features and obsession over self-producing, which is why I really loved The Off-Season. (I think it's his MO by leaps and bounds) It was the first time for me to feel like he was really doing what he's good at, and he's enjoying the process of it instead of being subjected to the mire of superfluous juggling acts of preaching agenda that were impending on his creative endeavours. He is a skilled and proficient rapper, and he's already shown to his fans and the public that he's capable of crafting a more holistic and balanced LP with a substantive message. With this LP, all I can muster up is that he sounds so reluctant and half-hearted as if he's literally being forced to step into this beef and respond for the sake of responding to it. I can only hope that he taps into the sheer joy and fun he had making The Off-Season with his new LP, The Fall Off and let him be himself.

AVAA but as a trans woman re: pi, i'd have to disagree with it not being attack helicopter level. part of it is cole's fame and the concrete chance he has of charting (ppl with bigger platforms obviously have an onus to use those platforms correctly), but the character of transphobia is different for transmasc folks. at least here in ireland, we acquired the uk's transphobic methods, which involve calling trans men "lost lesbians" when they're straight or bi and generally just sit on erasure, pity and disbelief. cole's bars conflating the violence with a trans man feel like applying stereotypical transfemme transphobia to transmasc people, and that is genuinely a new-ish development, mostly brought on from the bro-ey men like andrew tate who would be adjacent to TERFs. (cole made a song called passport bros a couple years back, a term tate helped popularise; i'd absolutely be willing to infer he's not only aware of the guy but kind of likes him, given that cole and women have never been on great terms.) it's something that sickens me to my stomach and which i couldn't see any other way

I do not agree with the transphobia angle, AT ALL, and would love for someone to explain to me how JCole insinuating that a trans woman is not a biological woman is detrimental to a healthy trans movement. Prof. S said himself that their perception of themselves doesn't fit the REALITY of how they were born .. meaning, what is fact is fact and the amount of chromosomes you have does in fact determine whether you will biologically be born male or female..... I do not think the discourse should revolve around "what is man" and "what is woman" , but should instead revolve around the rights and resources those people have available to them and ensuring those things are equally available to them and not being reprimanded for it.

AVAA, I'm a trans person and I appreciate your addendum. Could you point me to a place where I can learn about what "bio-centralism" (as I think you called it) is, especially with regard to parents and/or being trans? I'd love to understand what is wrong with it, I feel that I'd most likely be against it too if this J Cole bar only makes sense under it's context, but it might help me understand my own belief systems better.

The term that was used is "Bioessentialism" and I must admit that I have not done any proper research on it and thus can't really share it with you! However, I think the basic idea that our culture and civilization is WAYYY too invested in the biological facts of one's birth is the fundamental building block of anyone fighting bioessentialism. I also use the term "Biological Determinism."

Avaa, as someone who's also trans i didn't even know what to feel about this bar cause it's such an absurd thing to say. I couldn't even figure out if the bar was transphobic or misogynistic first, cause the trans stuff is in it more, but it just feels like a way of getting to the misogyny in a way that looks more progressive to someone who doesn't know much about trans people (a lot of people in his audience for example). Really the first thing i thought of was that j cole is probably asking "are you on your period" every single time he's losing an argument to someone who can menstruate (in this case he even says it those who cant). Other than all the ways this bar is extremely problematic it's also nuclear cringe, profoundly embarrassing thing to say in my opinion.

Thank u for the addendum about the transphobia -- it seems like everybody is just skating over it, but it was really hurtful and shocking to me as a trans Cole fan, and it especially bummed me out how so few people outside of my community seemed to care. I was really disappointed and sad about it, particularly since this is the first time I've ever heard him reference transness, so I'm glad u talked about it, ty! (aava)

How are you this "woke" yet Kanye is your favourite artist?

    • @professorskye
      @professorskye  4 месяца назад +3

I spend a lot of time thinking about (and discussing) this question.
First of all, I have no problem being called woke, which is a good term malformed by bad actors. However I am not a fan of what is implied in usage like this. Still, I'll reply.
I am not sure that Kanye is my favorite artist anymore. His illness appears to be directing the art at this point. I still acknowledge his genius and that he is STILL the greatest living artist, but his mental health issues have clearly cost him dearly. It is these issues that lead him to be such an abhorrent person and I truly feel genuine pity for him. Our media landscape is all too happy to exploit this pain and difficulty by pointing the finger at him to make him some kind of scapegoat. And of course, it is very difficult to figure out where the asshole ends and where the mental illness begins.
But I care deeply about culture, art & humanity. Sadly his illness has led him to views which endanger other peoples humanity. I'd like to believe that there is a world where we can discuss all of these things SIMULTANEOUSLY with nuance and compassion, so I made this channel.

      Hi@@professorskye
Firstly, rest assured I wasn't using "woke" in the pejorative sense. Secondly, I really think you're running a great channel. However, I do find it questionable how you can have such fervour in your outrage for JK Rowling, to the point you've said you cannot even view the content, whilst simultaneously being able to engage so intensely with what Kanye is still producing. The outrage feels very selective and discordant, respectfully.
