About Sing About Me I’m Dyinf Of Thirst
‘Promise that you will sing about me’ is about remembering someone after they’ve passed. This comes right after Dave’s death at the end of swimming pools.
The first verse is from the perspective of Dave’s brother which ends with the line ‘and if I die before your albums drops I hope- [gunshots]’ This sentence is interrupted by gun shots. He died before the album dropped, but he wants Kendrick to sing about him. Kendricks’s fulfilling his last wish.
This line also speaks to the idea that if you continue down that path of violence like Dave’s brother, it’ll end up killing you, hence the gunshots interrupting mid sentence, showing us it could happen at any point, unexpectedly. This causes the listener to experience the sudden and jarring halt that is death in a smaller but still immediate sense.
The fact he’s murdered mid-sentence more broadly signifies he was killed before he was able to give all he had to give. It wasn’t enough his life was cut short, even his sentence is as well; death robs him of everything.
Also note that the shots come in right when Dave’s brother says “I hope”, signifying that there is no hope for kids like him in the ghetto and also, since he is cut off before he could express that hope, the line alludes to the ways violence destroys hopes and dreams, no matter how small before they can be realized.
The second verse is from the perspective of the sister of the character Keisha from section. 80 who is mad at Kendrick for singing about Keisha in the album.
The third verse is from Kendrick himself and I think the most important line is ‘Am I worth it? Did I put enough work in?’ which could refer to enough work to be remembered as one of the best in the rap game but it could also mean did he put in enough work to share his experiences and help people through his music. He says ‘and hope at least one of you sing about me when I’m gone’
To conclude the sing about me part of the song the lines:’And you're right, your brother was a brother to me and your sister's situation was the one that pulled me’ and ‘By any means, wasn't tryin' to offend or come between her personal life, I was like "It need to be told"” is Kendrick referring to the previous 2 people within the song. He is using his experiences to help people through his music which he hopes will make him worthy to be sung about.
In the first verse you have someone that wants their story to be told by Kendrick. In the second verse you have someone that’s upset with Kendrick for telling their sister’s story on Section.80 and doesn’t want him to talk about them anymore. So when he asks whether or not if he’s worth it, he’s asking if he’s worth being wrote about in a song as well. Which basically means that him rapping about them isn’t him trying to be disrespectful. In fact it’s the complete opposite because he’s questioning whether or not if he’s worthy of the same honor. Kendrick must hold writing a song about someone very high, because he hopes that one day someone will do the same to him and tell his story.
The dying of thirst part of the song is about Kendrick being sick of the gang cycle he is in. He uses an extended metaphor about water to represent his sins. He is dying of thirst because he needs holy water to repent for his sins.
This ties into the album very well as it’s about whether or not Kendrick is the good kid in a mad city.
‘If I told you a flower bloomed in a dark room would you trust it?’, ‘from Poetic Justice
‘If I told you I killed a nigga at sixteen would you believe me? Or see me to be innocent Kendrick you’ve seen in the street’ From Maad City
Think about the art of peer pressure and how he is doing all these negative things because of the environment around him. Is he negative at heart or is he like this because of the situation he is in. This is explored further by the butterfly/caterpillar theory in TPAB.
At the end of the song we hear the full version of the song outro which was heard in part at the start of the album. It’s Kendrick becoming baptised and receiving god into his life so that he can be a good person, and a positive influence which is what he does at the end of the album with ‘Compton’ as he creates a positive song about his city. Essentially with this he becomes worthy of being sung about and he becomes the good kid in the mad city.
Hope this helps. I used some of the lyric interpretation from genius. It’s 3 am for me so my writing quality isn’t quite at its best.

Jay Rock was signed first and mentored Kendrick giving him oppertunities

The first verse verse of Sing About Me isn’t Kendrick.
It’s actually one of Kendrick’s loved ones who’s brother was killed and Kendrick witnessed it and was there to comfort him when he died. So he’s writing from the perspective of the still living brother telling Kendrick that since Kendrick holds onto his dreams and isn’t deep in the gang shit like he is, even though he avenged his brother which put “bad karma” on him he still has hope for his own future as well as to thank Kendrick for at least being there for his bother when he was killed. Which is why, he starts off the verse telling Kendrick he’s writing to him in case he’s not alive the next day to leave a piece of his life behind, since he got revenge for his brother, the people who were close to his brother’s killer wanna get him now. And by the end of the verse, right after he tells Kendrick “and if I die before your album drops…”… gunshots ring out, he was killed. And by writing this very song is in fact Singing About Him ( as he wished ), after He Died of Thirst ( which is what Kendrick refers later on to as the lack of God in one’s life which leads them to things like senseless violence, murder, and retaliation as well as the lack of proper living circumstances caused by a system destructive to African Americans by nature )
