      I think Gangster Rap has its purpose. Conscious Rap is about trying to overcome and prosper, the "We'll all in this together" while Gangster Rap is the other side of succumbing to criminal elements to get the best life possible because the system is too corrupt for incremental change.
      And this isn't just a "Black" thing: we see it in Norteño and Country music. (Narcocorridos and Outlaw Country)

    I'm queer and I think the gay line is deeper and more scathing than you realized. Both Drake and Kendrick claim to be allies to the queer community, but also used a lot of homophobic implications as insults in this fight. They used it because they thought the other would be insecure about it, not because they dislike us, but that doesn't make it better. It kinda draws attention to the hypocrisy they are both showing in regards to misogyny too. I have been fascinated by this beef, I love Kendrick's music and I thought what he did here was amazing, but it's a valid criticism and worth exploring. Why can't male rappers insult each other without defaulting to implying they are gay or women? It's worth meditating on.

      It's a sad reality, but you will literally get raped(or extorted)in many prisons as a feminine or soft man. So people that are close to prison don't want to be soft or feminine men.This makes the streets and culture more homophobic.

      And another if you knew anything about Kendrick, you would know he addressed growing up with a transgender uncle. Drake took a cheap shot at her in family matters asking "where is your uncle at" I want to talk with the man if the house " that's directly at Kendrick's aunt who transitioned to his Uncle.

      @AS-of1cs I didn't try to apply rules or say I was offended by any of the lyrics. I was saying what I thought RXKNephew meant by the line. And based on those lines, I would bet that he agrees with us that there are no rules in rap beef. But the audience hears what they hear. If this was just any rap beef, I wouldn't think twice. But these two men are trying to prove they are this generation's greatest rapper. I find it interesting that neither of them believe they can insult their opposition without resorting to misogyny and homophobia. Drake used a lot of other lazy crutches, and they all made him look bad, but I would argue they were the only two Kendrick resorted to. I'm not sure I'd even argue he used it poorly or it wasn't worth it. I just think it's interesting when everything else is clever complex vulnerable dissections of Drake as a person and the industry as a whole. Just a clarification for anyone else who finds this comment and wants to add some variation of "why are you butthurt, snowflake?".

  • @GoodiesFire
    @GoodiesFire 4 месяца назад +76

    "Why is Kendrick picking on the weak?" because he has to. This question is equivalent to "Be the bigger person" or "Turn the other cheek." No way! Actions must have consequences. Some people talk shit while taking advantage of others' kindness or patience. When it backfires, they get upset and play victims. What BBL means: self-victimization.
    Regarding "the beef", aka marketing campaign, this is my theory: The OGs weren't happy with how this situation escalated because they didn't want another high-profile war for "the industry", but it won't happen while Kendrick and Drake are worth more alive... let it sink.

      This is a narrative I feel like people don't give enough validation. Kendrick's battle with Drake was righteous. Drake might be artistically inferior but he is powerful and influential for all the wrong reasons and rewarded for his bad behavior. That's worth fighting.

      @@SuperMcha Kendrick was fighting with a purpose but let's be real the hypocrisy of Kendrick is thinking the war is righteous. No, he is just as bad as Drake with a different angle.
      Is the idea of Drake is flawed? Yes, If you remove Drake do you solve the Fake problem?No
      The fact that hip hop's greatest entry is not being real is a flaw in the system. The entry of hip hop is metaphors, similes, Double entendre, rhyme schemes, punchlines and flow. What happened to the truth?

    • @GoodiesFire
      @GoodiesFire 4 месяца назад +1

      @@lugebeatzz8747 Everyone has their belief systems. Is defending your background and the people you love worth fighting for? Yes, this war is righteous.
      What happened here is the story of a narcissist who can't get a no for an answer. Kendrick and Drake can't stand each other, but like the cloud chaser Drake is, he wanted Kdot in the first personal shooter, and Mr Morale told him no, but J. Cole brought Kdot into the song in verse (Big mistake). Some people need to learn to live and let live.
      Don't you like me? I'm not rocking with you, either; let's move on.

    • @SuperMcha
      @SuperMcha 4 месяца назад +9

      @@lugebeatzz8747 How exactly is Kendrick "as bad" as Drake? Sincere question.
      Whatever the fallout from this battle might be and we might not see it all right now - in fact I'm confident we won't - I believe Kendrick is righteous for taking a stance that most within Hip Hop weren't willing to take. And I believe it will be a turning point. He's shifted the trajectory already. Many artists were willing to support and collaborate with Drake who actively leeches off other artists and destroys careers - not to mention his other transgressions. Kendrick might be a flawed person in the same way most humans are flawed - which he has acknowledged - but he chose to stand up to combat this type of behavior taking place in a craft that he's honed with precision and has deep passion for. If that's not righteous, I'm not sure what is.
      As for truth - I don't see much truth in Drake's work and that's why his work will never be art. I agree with what you allude to which is that most of Hip Hop is still fake. Right now that's the case. This battle might just shift the tide of influence to raise up a crop of rappers that follow a more genuine ethos - returning to Hip Hops roots. And that's what's real.

    16:50 I prefer the idea that because they think something that is pretty clearly untrue (at least according to RXK), that “paid to think” is actually about how they don’t get paid, because they aren’t good at thinking. It reminds me a lot of Capital Steez’s line off survival tactics, “they say hard work pays off- well, tell the based god don’t quit his day job.” They both are pointing out the absence of something (thought/hard work) by mockingly pretending that it is present. To fill out the RXK line, not only do they suck at thinking, they also don’t get paid.

  • @brandondavis4766
    @brandondavis4766 4 месяца назад +37

    10:50 The style which you are referring to, I believe, is called shit talk. Pioneered by rappers such as YN Jay and Rio Da Young OG. It tends to involve talking shit on everything and everyone around you, while occasionally not rhyming nor going with the flow of the beat. Sometimes, I have noticed, the lyrics will be recorded as samples, and then the lines are layered in a way where the rapper is essentially interrupting him or her self. This contributes to the overall aggressive feeling of the shit talk style, where they will not even let themselves finish the previous bar. This is emulating the way in which they would argue with their ops. The style is believed to have originated from the state of Michigan within towns such as Flint.

My first reaction to the rap name "Gucci Mane" was "Wait, this guy's supposed to be representative of black hyper-masculinity, but he's named after a company that I associate with purses and handbags?" I think Nephew is having a similar reaction to the idea of a rapper getting a BBL - "When did the rules of masculinity get changed on me?"

    AVAA prof. I believe the "paid to think" line actually speaks to and ties into your previous ideas regarding Neph and epistemology.
    We can only know performers relative to our perception of them.
    As more of the information on artists is given in such a way that they can control their own narrative as artists, this leads to us more generally creating assumptions that artists like Meek Mill and Rick Ross are living genuinely.
    So why would we think that? Since it creates a state of cognitive dissonance as we already know these artists aren't genuine (the personas are the performance) as many don't even use their real names.

    I think when he asks how Drake isn't in jail if he's a pedophile, its less asserting his innocence and more tying into the next line about the whole industry being rotten
    If he's guilty and free, its because the same system all these guys participate in is protecting him

    Slightly off-topic, but not really... Any artist weighing-in on the feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake is an opportunist. Kdot never used social media to attack Drizzy or sent out hints about what was coming next through RUclipsrs, unlike Drake. The brilliance behind what Kendrick did was to eviscerate his opponent entirely with rhymes. That has always been the essence of rappers dissing each other. Who "won" the rap battle is irrelevant. We were all entertained. Some of you pundits even profited from the whole beef, thanks to Kendrick. That's the American way.

    "He's got a way with words" I'm not taking up for Slim, but that's how people where I'm from talk. That's how I talk, until it's time to code switch. I can't stand when people come for AAVE. There's nothing wrong with talking like that. It's a real dialect. Why do people dive into our culture and put it down? Happens way too often.

    22:30 I've got to disagree with you prof, at least on this one. People have been calling each other "dumb" for most of recorded history, in a myriad of languages, figures of expression and Euphemisms.
    And while it can be "ableist", it is also (when properly used) one of the most directly accurate insults you can give someone (when it fits). If anything, in the worst case scenario for 2045, someone will pull the "Oh I am very sorry, I don't mean to offend you... I was just expecting a battle of wits, now I see you're unarmed."

    Im a lyrical whistle when I open my mouth I capture ear (air)…
    Don’t come pressing me Im too sharp, pick you apart like cactus hair..
    All I needs a challenger, watch me rock it out this atmosphere..
    Cause with these bars I’ll get my sales up like when a heavy breeze finds a ship…
    So much word play packed in a line I plan it every time my rhymes eclipse..
    But with a lantern I’ll guide you quick through my mind's abyss,
    on my last leg and it’s thick cuz my life’s a bitch...
    My life’s spiralingso you know that’s cryptic,
    but hard to wrap around your head because my thoughts are twisted...
    But I keep my meadow (metal) peace (piece) with silencer to whisper every time he spit…
    Concealed with extensions, literally that’s two shine eclipse…
