The Alien franchise is a beloved horror and sci-fi staple, so naturally Hollywood tries to breathe new life into it every few years. In 2012, Ridley Scott made his return to the universe of Alien with Prometheus-- a not-quite prequel that follows a space crew as they deal with some scary alien threats called Engineers.
Prometheus does raise some questions though. Like why haven’t the crew been briefed on their mission until AFTER they’ve been in cryo-sleep for several years? Why does everybody take off their helmets in an alien cave? How did they get lost in the cave with amazing mapping technology? Why did they suddenly want to touch that horrifying alien snake thing? Why did David spike Charlie’s drink? What was the point of Weyland plot twist? Why was that Engineer chasing Elizabeth at the end?

The archaeologist dude losing it after not seeing an Engineer but having all kinds of evidence of their presence killed the inner archaeologist in me lol.
Literally every scientist in this film failed at their specialty. But a biologist trying to pet an animal doing an obvious threat display just takes the cake. We have evolved for billions of years to recognize those instinctively, and in a fraction of a second! Even small children will instinctively back off when they see it. Yet this scientist who specialises in literally that subject just... ignores it. WTF.
It always bugged me that the guy who makes the maps is one of the ones who got lost, and the guy who specialised in living organisms didn't recognize obviously threatening behaviour.
this is because ridley scott literally does not understand science, or fiction
This movie really felt as though it should have been a good movie, but...
It bugged me that in the months that the ship was approaching the planet that NOBODY did a weather survey/gas survey/scientific survey of any type whatsoever.
I thought the mapper was high and that is why he got lost and made poor decisions. Recall the lines:
"Is that tobacco in your respirator?"
"Sure. Tobacco." (Sarcastically implying it is not tobacco)

Glad it wasn't just me who didn't understand what the hell this character's motivations were supposed to be.
One of the writers watched Alien while high way back in college and thought 'Hey so like what if we like make the synthetic human go evil"

This becomes even more dubious after Alien Covenant.
The best explanation we have for David's motivation is that he resents the idea of bieng created. Of having "Masters".
I think he also has a Superiority complex wherein he considers himself better than both the Humans and the Engineers and thus believes he can create the perfect life form. The Xenomorph
Something that in his mind both Engineers and humans failed to do. (You could also say that he considers their creations to be failures because both the Engineers and Humans tried to make their Creations in their own image. Whereas David took the Xenomorphs to the full extent of evolution).
Ofcourse all of this sounds good on paper but in reality had a very mediocre execution at best.

There was actually a scene of a young Guy Pearce on a 2020-something TED talk show, which was the only good thing in the movie so of course it’s only natural to delete it.

Not like it's a common joke to reuse jokes from the video and slap something else on it to garner a laugh, entice us to listen to it again for additional insight, and a plethora of other valid reasons that can make it both annoying and useful😐
@@talphazero1036 It's a valid criticism because Charlie's motivation makes no sense. He's all sad and depressed because . . . . why, exactly? This is a huge discovery. What they've found will keep Earth scientists busy for decades.

The mission itself and the fancy useless mapping gadgets must've costed so much that all they could afford was the uneducated scientists.
I wanted this movie to be good so badly, but by the end of it I was so f*cking angry at how awful it was. You had the coolest idea from Alien to exploit, it hued so much potential, and it was all squandered... How can you setup so many things and not pay off anything at all?! It should have been called Blue Balls: The Movie. And yeah, how to discredit and destroy you're movie in 5 seconds: Write your characters a certain way, then 5 minutes later have them behave completely contradictary to how you wrote them as. A five years old could write more consistant characters! Come on! And don't get me started on the pitiful Alien Covenant... That movie should have be called How to Get Yourself Killed in an Horror Movie: The movie...

The twist of them being identical 3rd cousins was way more shocking than any of the twists in Prometheus.

Actually, Mad Max fury road's script was supposed to be for Prometheus and vice-versa, but Charlize Theron got them mixed and they just run with them replaced anyway.
It helped me too, last time they posted it...and the other time they reposted it.

i actually enjoyed that part of it because it left us to speculate and left us with more questions
@@shaumikp1 I know I'm a minority here, but I really enjoyed this movie despite its flaws, and I've watched it multiple times since it was released and it still holds up in my opinion.
That would have been a more honest title.

@@shaumikp1 Having some room for speculation is nice, but the movie should at the very least provide some solid foundation to build from. With Prometheus is more like coming up with your own story from the ground and then trying to fit the "argument".

What is really sad, is that Prometheus could have been a good film if the writing and characters were not so awful....the music was there, the cinematic elements were great. I think Ridley tried to re-create the Alien "feel" (a sense of the mysterious unknown which fills the imagination) but he did it so badly, showing so many meaningless things that have no logic or possible answers.
Sad thing is they took out all the filmed scenes that made the movie better and make more sense!!! There were like 30 scenes cut from the movie.
So it could have been good if it wasn't bad. Gotcha.

But it's interesting you needed to get so triggered about it. That kind of resentment often arises as a result of an inferiority complex.
For me, part of the horror of the original Alien was that there were so many questions: what were they? Where did they come from? But the scary part was that the universe is so vast, so old, so much more immense than humanity can ever be, that it doesn't care about our questions. We don't deserve answers because, ultimately, in the face of the black, cold, ageless cosmos, we are insignificant. And there are beings out there utterly beyond our comprehension, to which we are just food.
The new batch of movies took that totally away, and made it all about *us.* Like, humans have this special place in the scheme of the universe. I really feel that completely diminished the Aliens' power.

I felt like Ridley Scott was saying it was all about him, rather than all the other creators who could justly lay claim to the Alien legend: Dan O'Bannon, H.R. Giger, James Cameron etc.
Just watched the movie with Ryan’s alongside to help me understand what the hell the movie was. He didn’t disappoint. It’s probably the most professionally made bag of crap ever.
"Why'd he do that?" "Oh, now that you mention it, I don't--I don't know." Literally describes the entire decision-making process of every character in this movie and Alien: Covenant.
Covenant is even more head-scratching.
The script was written during an 8 hour bender powered by vodka, whiskey and LSD. It made sense in the guy's head, at the time. How it made sense to producers and director (Ridley Scott!) is anybody's guess.

not only that, but he didnt even know for sure yet that the aliens were all dead. He went all pouty the moment they entered orbit and ONLY discovered the first physical proof of alien life, which will have been one of the most important discoveries in human history. But yeah, total bummer

They never revealed what the space jockeys were before this. This wasnt a cash grab, it was an inevitable story that had to be told.
As a huge fan of the Alien movies (the first 4) and also the books I was looking forward to this. I saw this in theaters. I've never been more disappointed in a movie.
All the movie needed to do was:
-Have Humanity encounter Engineer tech
-Find a planet they 'cleansed" with the Xenomorph
-Humans exploring it find things and die
That's it. That was all that needed to happen.
What suddenly occurs to me is how perfectly you are able to portray 2 really different characters consistently. Great acting dude...dudes? There is only one of you...right?
The amount of questions producer guy asks makes me sometimes question his love for money.
Yeah, it's the only thing that makes this unrealistic. In reality it would go more like...
"So you have a sequel, prequel or spinoff for me?"
"Sir sir, I do-"
"Boom! Here's your check, money ain't tight!" And then producer guy would snort a line of coke off some poor actress trying to get her break in Hollywood.

Observable Observer That's literally the joke. Unlike the average Hollywood producer, this one is knowledgeable and asks pointed questions. But he really doesn't care about any of the answers that the screenwriter guy provides. Hence he uses phrases like "that works", "fair enough", "let me get off that thing" (SG's back). He'll approve anything as long as he sees commercial value. This pitch meeting is basically an amusement for him.

I have a clear childhood memory of Prometheus. I came to see it with my best friend while in high school. We were both geeks and very fond of science fiction... him even more than me !
Short story short, Prometheus is the first time that I saw a really bad movie live.
Sadly, it was not the last.
The only lasting effect this film gave us is the Prometheus School of Running Away From Things, so I guess thats something

“What is she going to eat?”, was my first, and then constant thought, the first time I watched the film and got to that scene. I liked that they were going exploring and looking for engineers. But I also could not get beyond that.
I like when the producer guy interrupts the pitch guy with something important and the pitch guy just ignores it and moves on.

Also... I haven't seen Covenant, but I heard that Guy pearce reprises his role as Weyland (it's flashback so he's allowed to be young this time)
@@H3llb0und - Yes, you're right. There are several deleted scenes. All together I think they add up to approx. 20+ extra minutes of scenes that explains A LOT. Wish those scenes were kept in the final edit of the film because they do explain more on the character backgrounds and add extra information on the Engineers and other plot points.
I'm sure this is going to be a trend, casting hip 20-somethings as every old character just so they can reuse them for prequels. Ugh.

My favurite bit in this extraordinary film is when she has a giant writhing monster literally ripped out of her womb by a fairground claw machine, grabs what appears to be a staple gun and staples her belly back together, gets up and immediately SPRINTS down a corridor.

I knew the moment they took off their helmets, without any thought of an alien airborne virus lurking around that the movie was going to be trash.
Nope, actually it was when it was revealed that they didn't even know what type of mission they had signed up for. Like, this isn't a military operation, who would do such a foolish thing?
And then I knew again when I realised that they'd confused Carbon Monoxide and Carbon Dioxide and either not one person involved in the production noticed or they were all too scared to say anything.

I remember laughing hysterically at the rolling away from the space ship shot in the cinemas. I don't know if anyone else was but I must have seemed like a crazy person. I am so glad I wasn't the only one that found it ridiculous.
My eyes rolled so hard at that scene, they almost did a 360, which would've done wonders to my optic nerves to have them twisted up in a bunch.
I give instant feedback too. And much of the movie was "what?", "but why?", "don't separate from the group!", "don't touch that!", "why is David smiling?", "run to the side omg!".
Absolutely bonkers that they didn't cast Lance Henrikson as Weyland.

These new Alien movies depend on characters having 90s slasher movie levels of lack of common sense to make the plot happen.

It was downright comedy by the end. The main woman literally had a cesarean and then was immediately running and jumping.
Literally no one cared she gave birth to an alien fetus

I truly didn’t understand so much when I watched that movie. This vid detailed those plot holes perfectly. The sinister android motivation, the engineers actions, the ship run I kinda forgave, but it was so glaring.
