      Happily leave him open if it means locking Luka & Kyrie up. Something about those injuries completely destroyed his shot. He's not a slightly worse version of the old Klay. He's a completely different player; one that can't shoot very well and is utterly useless at slashing, so it's not like you have to worry about the pump-fake. Leave him open, rotate & recover when possible. That's probably how most teams will deal with him now. (Talking about in the playoffs, obviously)

    One thing you didn’t allude to is the Mavs do a good job at getting there wings good looks at the rim and in PJ’s case post up opportunities on mismatches and setting back screens see OKC series for example. The issue with the Mavs is they have made massive roster changes in the middle of seasons and haven’t had the same roster to start the season as they did to end it. Now with all the new additions and possibly more to still come but the biggest thing is getting it done before the season so they can implement actions, sets and plays to get easier shots for guys. The one thing I expect from Klay is to bring some of the actions from GS to the Mavs and my hope is that they run the warriors post split action to death when Luka, Kyrie and Klay are on the court together simply because all 3 guys can do all 3 actions in it and can give the stars way easier shots. For example have Luka catch it in the post and have Kyrie or Klay set a screen for the other for a 3 or cut to the basket or the screener slips it and cuts for an easy basket at the rim or set a flare screen and if it doesn’t work Luka go to work in the post and now you have Kyrie or Klay one pass away and then Kyrie or Klay one pass away from him

    A fix for the defensive issues with Klay could be if Grimes gets back to his play in his second season with the Knicks. If so, you put Klay at the 4 where he's more comfortable guarding bigger slower wings, and Grimes is now your POA defender. You also remove a poor shooter in PJ Washington for a better shooter in Grimes meaning defenses can't sag off anyone on the perimeter. Grimes getting over his injury and getting back to that play his second year could be a huge development for getting the configuration right with Klay offensively and defensively.

  • @Mark-db1ok
    @Mark-db1ok 4 дня назад +20

    I'm optimistic about what the Mavs can do next year.
    • Remember, they reworked the team in a major way just a few months ago. Then they went through the west like Montezuma's revenge and made the Finals.
    • They had Lively the ROOKIE and guys who've never sniffed the playoffs before, and made the Finals. Now they'll get a full training camp and season together. What kind of monster can Lively turn into?
    • Against Boston, everyone but Luka basically went cold. All those missed open looks killed me. What will Klay be able to do with those looks? He doesn't even need to be 2016 Klay.
    • How much better can Luka be on offense and defense if he's not exhausted from carrying SO MUCH of the offensive load? A full training camp and season with the same team, + Kyrie, + year 2 Lively, + Klay could be awesome.
    Of course none of it matters... we know that all the LeBrons in LA are going to run the league now 😁

      @Briars71 3 дня назад +3

      I agree with most of what you said. Seems like their was a lot of psychological stuff going on with the Mavs in the finals. Feels like the moment was too big for many of their players.
      PJ and Lively had never experienced a playoff game prior to the season. Gafford had only played in one playoff series. Seems like Irving had some demons to exorcize with the Celtics. And the team's lack of experience playing together (only about four months before the start of the playoffs) finally caught up with them. All that on top of Luka's nagging injuries. Luka just wasn't right, physically or mentally.
      But credit to Boston, who earned their way to the top with trails, tribulations and their own failure two years ago in pursuit of the chip. They learned and improved. Hopefully, the Mavs will do the same. They are still hungry and the Mavericks are a solid organization. I'm hoping for a championship in the next couple of years.

    I think Quentin Grimes is X factor when it comes to defense. If Klay will be good enough to slow down 3s or 4s, then maybe you don't need PJ in closing line up. Instead you put Grimes in and he is the one who is guarding SGAs, Ja or Ant. Depending on match ups you can put Naji Marshall instead of Grimes or just keep PJ in.

    Lively was amazing for a rookie in the playoffs. He'll only continue to get better. If he's even 25% better next year vs last year he's going to be tremendous for DAL. He already was extremely important for them which is rare for a rookie on a legit contender team.
    I'm a bit worried about the defense as well with Luka, Kyrie, and Klay on the court together. If they could add one more defensive stalwart somehow that would probably put them over the top. They were already pretty good before. I think they would have beaten anyone other than Boston in the finals. Boston was too good defensively they took away Dallas lob threat which they thrived on vs everyone else. And a lot of corner passes. And when they were able to swing it to the corner guys just weren't knocking down 3's at a high enough rate. They actually shot the 3 very poorly for the series.
    Boston basically shut Kyrie down besides 2 games in DAL. Luka did his thing even while injured the entire playoffs but Boston's defense harassed the hell out of him too because besides him no one else was consistent. Klay should help in that regard. Luka give guys more open 3 looks than anyone in the league and if Klay can continue to knock them down at a 45% clip that would be huge
    Honestly the best thing right now for Dallas and Mavs fans would be Slovenia not making the Olympics. Luka needs a summer off to heal up. He's still hurt i saw him grimacing in pain in yesterdays game in one of the clips

      Thank you... all people talk about is our new wings and if they make us better... and noone talks about our TWENTY YEARS OLD ROOKIE CENTER! I wouldnt be suprised if he will be a 15/10 Big at the end of the season while being an elite rim protector on top of that.
      And I agree. We didnt loose the finals because of defense. The Celtics had an ORtg of 112 in the finals. In all 3 EC PO rounds they had an ORtg above 120, even 124 in the reg season. Our problem was clearly the offense. Boston could help off of DJJ and PJ, cause they were both ice cold from 3. And on top of that, Kyrie left his talent at the door of the TD Garden every damn game we played in Boston. They didnt shot him down, he missed to many looks he normally makes to count! He was just flat out bad in the 3 TD Garden games. No clue how to break this mental barricade... But if our co star isnt at least decent playing in Boston, we will not have a chance no matter what against the Celtics.
      That being said, we first have to get there again. And I think Klay makes our team better and will give us more offensive firepower. Something we needed since the trades. And so will Lively's groth and the rotser being mostly stable overall.

    I’ll be honest, I think a healthy off season and going into the season with the mindset they finished with.. Klay can summon up some of his all defense days, He’s not old nor is he immobile. I think for Klay effort is the story and I truly think he will be trying this season.. Will he make 1,2 or 3rd team probably not but he can do what DJJ did

    personally i thought they should have gone after Siakam or maybe even PG13 , Klay wasnt even the option i considered
    (i like klay more then pg but is he better fit ? ) also im sure 50mil / 3 years is way less then the other two were asking for .

    Thanks for making these points about how you believe Klay is going to work out in Dallas. I hadn't realized Klay's open 3 point shooting was still as good as it was before. One of the main issues I think he has is bad shot selection, but he is for sure getting way better shots from Luka and Kyrie and from the gravity they represent on the floor even without the ball. Curry has that gravity too, but he is only one guy and maybe not far behind Kyrie in terms of playmaking, but certainly way worse than Luka.
    Also Luka and Kyrie are elite at driving and finishing at the rim, which opens up the 3 point line even more. I think Klay's passing is also something that can be of use. He is a smart player and is great at hitting cutters and can probably even find lob targets if he really wants to. This dynamic ability on offense is certainly something the Mavs didn't really have before.
    However, as much as I can see the offense improve, I can see the defense fall down. DJJ was a top level defender, fast, athletic, lengthy and tenacious. Having Klay on the floor and getting him hunted by the opposition is something that can become a problem. They already have Kyrie who, while very active with his hands (at least in the playoffs), isn't a good defensive option. Luka, while not bad 1v1, has some lapses as a team defender and can sometimes miss plays completely.
    They really need to rely on some other guys to get them through defensively. Having some combination of Washington, Grimes, Naji or Green on the floor can become a must in endgame situations, which lowers their potential offense by a bit and does not always leave room for Klay.

    • @steveellsworth1109

    Ray Allen role! I still do believe Klay could get his legendary splash shooting back. He is already 32 yrs old. He doesn't have to be elite in defense and lateral movements for lay ups and dunks like he used to, but reviving his elite shooting ability is still a big part of the team.

    It’s more than the starting lineup. Kidd will figure out rotations depending on what’s needed on the floor. Did anyone really think DJJ was a good POA defender at the start of the season? The Mavs staff worked on that. Naji has a higher floor than DJJ and better shooting. I predict that either Grimes or Naji would be in the running for 6th man.

      DJJ could only do so much himself, yes he was a good defender but his playing style won’t fit the finals against bigger teams. The Mavs needed shooters and losing 1 great defender and replacing it with Naji won’t hurt. The Mavs all together became a great defending team, even when DJJ wasn’t on the floor.
