Hey Scotty Kilmer I had a question, I have a 2012 Honda Civic LX. One day I noticed my transmission was leaking. Sure enough I found it was leaking from where the CV meets the transmission. So I replaced the seal, then about a week or two later it started leaking so I replaced the seal again. That was two or three weeks ago. Today I looked at the street and saw transmission fluid again. I have 2 thoughts it's either the CV axle or the transmission. I would really appreciate the help if you can thank you
Scotty Kilmer love your videos scotty but what about when youre done from all that work! No beers 🍺 lol just joking great videos like i said and cheers🍻
@@Shawn_White damn only 40 minuets or cussin? i've lost my voice and a great number of tools working on this @#$$ %##% #$## @#$# transmission axle seal.
45 minutes.... well, I was replacing a CV axle once on my car, hmmmmm..... about 3 hours with a friend and it didn't work properly. So I put the old one back in - another hour. Got myself a new outer CV joint. About 10 hours of work later the car was on the road.
Ummm I’m sorry sir... but that may have been the most helpful car repair video I have ever watched. I’m pretty sure this is exactly my issue and I will be giving this a go myself. Thank you!
hi Scotty, your videos are a life and money saver! I have transmission fluid leaking from the scenario you recreated here, so my worry level went down in an instant. I have a 2009 Chevy Malibu and they don't even have a transmission dipstick to check the fluid level! thanks for all the videos!
Thanks for sharing the tip about the grease holding the clip. It's stuff like that that really helps you out when you doing something, we appreciate you Scotty very much
I cant thank u enough. I feel like I went to auto mechanic school . never do I get gaged by slezie repair workers and never do I break down and do knw why. thank u so much and plez keep lessons coming, u changed the game for mom and pop mechanics across the united states
That was aLOT easier than I thought it might be. Its good that those seals are so accessible on that transaxle. Thanks for the vid scotty! you sure make scary sounding jobs seem easy.

A lot of times when I put seals in I'll use the end of a 2x4 or 2x2 to strike with the hammer. The wood is more forgiving and I can bridge all the way across the seal and drive in both sides at the same time leaving less chance of deforming or ruining the seal.On RWD transmissions there is an output shaft that sticks out beyond the seal. For those I take a hole saw and cut a hole in the flat side of the 2x4 big enough for the shaft to fit through.
scotty i replaced the drivers side transmission seal on my 2009 hyundai accent 2 times...but it continues to leak...what could it be ??? also they've offering 2 different seals one rubber type and one metal type?? neither stopped the leak
I think you forgot a pretty main item on this video which is vehicle speed sensor, for those with automatics. A lot of times people with check trans fluid ( not knowing how to do it and have it read low) then fill it and blow the seal out of the vss.
Ive gone thru 4 seals now cause it keeps going in crooked, it will not go in straight. So i hit the side thats not flush and it bends, my seal doesn’t have a fat lip like the one in this vir, its like 3mm wide. I dont know wtf to do
Hi Scotty. I had my f axle shaft , cv axle on R front replaced on june 2022 for a 03 hyundai elantra. Question : should the seal been included in that work ? Because i now have a R cv seal leak ..8 months later . Thank you
I guess I should have replaced that seal when I replaced the CV axle today along with the wheel bearing hub assembly on my 1982 Chevy Citation cuz now it's leaking at the transmission. ugh 😩 But hey at least this 3rd time around it should be a breeze since, I've taken that wheel bearing hub off and put it back on multiple times, at least I know what I'm doing now. 😂
No worries..I did a mustang 5.0 manual trans 4 times...a mustang shop said all I had to do was drive the car 100 miles and the whole sounds would go away normally!!
You make it look so easy. But, I don't see any evidence of a transmission fluid leak. There's no cross contamination with the coolant either. So, what's happening to my fluid? (2002 Mustang GT).
Usually the tie rod is stuck worse than yours was, so it would be a good idea to take the nut off half way, so it's level with the tie rod end and then hit it or else you're gonna ruin the threads and mushroom it out. Of course if you plan on replacing it afterwards then it doesn't matter.
I wish we had you as our mechanic. My grandmother just bought an 01' Honda Accord, which has an expired recall for the transmission, and she's had so many issues with it. The car lot she bought it from is taking care of her because I know the owner but they've put in three rebuilt transmissions and each transmission only lasted about a week. Then after the third one it started having issues again and they said it was a bad sensor. So they replaced that and then a week later it started having issues again, then they said it was the plug the sensor went into that went bad. So they replaced that and now its back in the shop again after I noticed it was leaking. I checked the oil and it was fine so I was sure it was the transmission fluid, only I couldn't confirm because I couldn't find a way to check the transmission fluid levels. She was driving it the other day and it started having issues getting going from a stop, then the check engine light came on. She shut it off and waited a few min and turned it back on and the light went off and the car drove fine the rest of the way home. They said they would get her in another car if they couldn't fix it this time, though I would think by now they'd just take it to a Honda Dealership since their mechanic can't seem to fix it.
No! Only a small amount of fluid usually comes out while you replace the seal/axle. You also want to be careful and get the CORRECT SEAL! Try to match them if you can. Some of these aftermarket ones will leak and you will have to do this all over again!
Scotty, So glad I came across your channel. Thank you for all the hard work you put into helping DIY'ers. Bout to go tackle this job now. Let you know how I made out.

Forgot to mention CLEAN the area where the seal sits in, & put some grease on the seal before installing it, & tap it in LIGHTLY when you mount the new seal. Also forgot to mention that since you disconnected the strut & hub, you'll prob need a front end alignment now- another 80+ dollars
And never hit the threads with a hammer.. big no no. Also when removing the sealing dont use sharp objects not to damage the transmission casing, or it will leak behind the sealing ... Same with the axle, never hit the outer cv joint .. It will slide in just fine with hand power or there is something wrong. Didnt mention that it can leak fluid when taking out the axle and when reassembling never hit the bolts to the damper also it can destroy the threads.
Have you done a video on transmission fluid in coolant system? Somehow I've got what looks like chocolate milk in my radiator. 😫 You're so helpful on everything, thank you!
Thanks to your advice, Scotty, I now have a $25 OBD2 scanner, and a brake fluid tester on the way. That's only the beginning of the testers I have on my Amazon wish list. Now if only I had the money and space for an air compressor I can use with my impact wrench...

Hi Scotty, big fan here! Can you make a video changing transmission fluid on a sealed system please? Showing the whole process, It’d be amazing, thank you and fantastic job with the videos!!!
Quick and simple explanation, is pretty similar for most cars, some will have an intermediate bearing which is held in with bolts, most french cars have this and it's fiddly, just an extra step to remember.
A mechanic replaced left output seal on my 2006 Honda Accord 4 cylinder. It leaked badly, because he bought an aftermarket seal of the wrong part number. He did replace it with a Honda seal from Honda. Now it leaks worse than when the original seal was leaking. He took it apart again and saw no problem. It still leaks worse than before he replaced the seal. How can this be. The mechanic doesn’t know why. Can you help or does anybody else have any ideas on what to do next?
Did you push the seal all the way into the transmission until it stopped up against the bearing or did you just bang the edges until it was flush with the transmission housing?
Thanks for the tip on the grease. I have found that it's good to loosen the axle nut before I raise the car. You must have done this, because it came off so easily.
scotty im in a predicament...with my girl at motel and my toyota tundra 2001 truck I havent had long will not move. i had checked fluid and thought it needed fluid. I use my truck every day for work ...its how I make my living and how were in a motel now. It wont move. Scotty I get on it pretty hard bcus everything I do is rush rush...traveling hundreds of miles a day of stops, turns et cetera. It was after putting the fluid in and driving several miles back to motel that it made like a steady hum sound for two maybe three seconds. We barely coasted into the parking lot. I I waited half hour for it to cool before checking the fluid level again, on the stick, it was a good half inch to 5/8 further than it should have been for being cold. on top of this the overdrive light when on I thought was engaged, so when I wanted to pass someone on the road, I would push it. But its when the lights not showing that it is engaged. we have to be out by noon unless I work in the morning. Did I mess transmisson up??? I cant be without my ride Scotty, I'll lose everything. Doe's or can over-filling the fluid make it slip or not move??? Have I blown a seal?? What can I do that will make my truck move. will draining the amount of fluid I put in make it go back to moving. HELLO. SCOTTY.... DESPERATE.. WHAT CAN I DO??? Have lil money and not much time. IS THERE A SOLUTION ???? drain a lil fluid? bcus it was ok before that?
Cyril Azoulay No because the transmission fluid is in the transmission to lubricate the gears where the axle goes in is completely seperate part of the transmission he only said some fluid may come out when you remove the axle cuz the seal was broken hence why he was replacing it
hey scotty thanx for the reply.. i scanned it earlier today but no code came out my scanner i got for 60 dollars. not sure if theres a special scanner i need to use
If the strut or knuckle holes are elongated to allow adjustment for camber, then it is recommended to match mark the parts before taking them apart. Alignment should be checked after this job regardless. If the holes are round, and are in good close alignment with each other and a snug fit for the bolt, it is likely that wheel alignment will stay close to its original position. This assumes the bolts and holes are in good condition. Stay gold.
Hey scotty I have a 1992 ford f350 2wd the transmission is leaking out of the transmission over flow think that's what is called only when it running it's leaking bad what do I do

Scotty Kilmer I just had my transmission fluid changed. Before, I had no leaks and a few days after, I noticed my CV Axle Seals were leaking. 1) Do I need to hold the mechanic accountable? Did he do something to cause this? Car is 8 years old, but only 68,000 miles on it. I just find it odd that everything was bone dry before the tranny flush and now I have a leak. 2) Only 1 side is leaking. Should I replace the seals in pairs or just the problematic one?
How about a video on chasing strange electrical issues? I've been diagnosing this issue for about 3 months and haven't found the culprit yet. My Nissan Pathfinder's rpms drop and a vibration can be felt any time I turn on the headlights or roll the windows up or down. A drop in rpms is normal, I realize, but it drops up to 300 rpms just from turning on the headlights and more than that when rolling the windows up or down. My guess is a bad ground somewhere causing excessive draw from the alternator but I cannot locate it.
Usually this is from the axle splines cutting or damaging the seal during installation. Try to install the axle shaft without letting the splines touch the inner rubber of the seal. Having a helper to hold the shaft straight is a great thing. It could also be the transmission housings metal surface where the seal mates is damaged or has grit etc. It could also be the seal isnt seated properly. How Scotty showed to seat the seal, IMHO - isnt the best way. Ideally you would have a cylinder/socket/pipe (seal driver) that perfectly matches the seals outer metal diameter, and then use that to drive in the seal squarely. Stay gold.
Hi Scotty ! Love your videos. I have a lincoln town car 2004 which is leaking at 3 points under the car. I suspect its the transmission but I dont really know. It s leaking in the very front, in the center and the back axle area. I also have an issue when I back up from and turn the wheel to the right, there is a loud click sound coming from under the front of the car which seems to be from the drivers side. Any tips ?
So I had replaced my axle, then noticed a leak, replaced the seal, and it’s still leaking? It’s soaked around the axle so I know that’s where it’s leaking from but I have no clue why, maybe I got the wrong seal??
Recently i got my torque converter fix and i went to a road trip but my transmission leak and it seem to be the seal would the mechanic know the seal was bad or how often do you replace em
Whats up Scotty! So i have an 01 Hyundai Elantra and just recently it started leaking quite a bit of transmission fluid onto the ground. The thing is, it seems to be pooling at the top of the transmission and then flowing off. I havent dived into much yet but do you have a clue on what the problem might be?
i have a 1999 grand cherokee that has a trans oil leak right between the engine and the transmission. the torque converter is making a little grinding noise. What could be my problem?
awesome videos very helpful. i notices 3 things in the video that would put the DIYer in a little bit of trouble when tackling this kinda job 1st, hitting the tie rod on the top could cause mushrooming and messed up threads. my 2 cents, i would hammer on the side of the spindle where the tie rod is connected at so it can brake loose form its taper. 2nd pulling the CV axle by the shaft could pull the joints out of the socket causing a huge headache putting back in place, i would recommend pulling by the base of the CV housing for less chances of failure and lastly the seal if not done right there will be leaks after assembled my method is a seal installer tool or a socket thats the right size to drive the seal in.
Some oil seals need to be driven in to a specific depth and not bottomed out. It's a good idea to check the factory service manual to see if the seal has a limited depth or not.
Could you cover changing fluid in a Manuel transmission, my 06 focus zx3 has a leak. I need to at least figure out how to add fluid to it. Thanks for all your vids
I'm confused. If it leaks from that seal, why doesn't the transmission fluid need to be drained to prevent the fluid from coming out the hole when the axle is taken out of the transmission? Does the fluid only reach that area when the car is running and the fluid is being circulated through the transmission?
I pretty much did the exact same job for the exact same reason (Leaking Axle seals ) on my 1993 Dodge Shadow like 5 years ago. Another place I've seen Transmitions leak is the oil line to the external transmition oil cooler.
originally my third and fourth gears were gone.a friend of mine rebuilt it.when driven it had same problem 3rd and 4th.then he replaced governor pressure silenoid.ran fine couple days.now there's something loose spinning inside and a grinding between 2nd and 3rd gear.also slamming when letting off gas
I've just gotten into the habit of replacing axle seals every time I replace half shafts. It's just a few bucks more and a few minutes more time at that point and it saves a lot of time of having to go back and redoing it because the old seals started leaking from being disturbed by the shaft removal.

Doesnt that grease mix with the trans fluid? If so doesnt that contaminate the fluid?
Yeah

Been a follower for a while. You rock! Have a merry christmas.
Great information delivered before I could fall asleep. Many thanks.
Great video.
Thanks!
Thank you Scotty from North Houston!
What if the fluid is leaking on the other side of the car where the axel meets the transmission?
Did you push the seal all the way into the transmission until it stopped up against the bearing or did you just bang the edges until it was flush with the transmission housing?
Is it a good idea to pm the seal if you have to replace the drive shafts?
yes
Preventitive maitence.
Hello, there I have an issue with my gmc terrain transmission and the diagnostic I got on it from autozone was that the transmission pan gaskets A/T
Thanks for the tip on the grease. I have found that it's good to loosen the axle nut before I raise the car. You must have done this, because it came off so easily.
MERRY CHRISTMAS Scotty Kilmer!!!
scotty im in a predicament...with my girl at motel and my toyota tundra 2001 truck I havent had long will not move. i had checked fluid and thought it needed fluid.
I waited half hour for it to cool before checking the fluid level again, on the stick, it was a good half inch to 5/8 further than it should have been for being cold.
on top of this the overdrive light when on I thought was engaged, so when I wanted to pass someone on the road, I would push it.
Really like the "wham bam" approach, right to the point, thank you Sir!
I can apply any kind of grease for example the same grease for ball joints and tire rods?, thanks
Hi Scotty. I was wondering what type of grease do you put on the circlip? Can't it contaminate the ATF in the transmission?
Cyril Azoulay No because the transmission fluid is in the transmission to lubricate the gears where the axle goes in is completely seperate part of the transmission he only said some fluid may come out when you remove the axle cuz the seal was broken hence why he was replacing it
Oh, so where the axle goes into the transmission, that uses another kind of transmission fluid? WRONG!
Going to a mechanic for this. But amazing to be able to understand and not be over charged
hey scotty thanx for the reply.. i scanned it earlier today but no code came out my scanner i got for 60 dollars. not sure if theres a special scanner i need to use
Hi Scott can I use a silicone sealant to stop the leak instead of replacing the old seal thanks
Will it not need a front end alignment after its done?
Vapers Win no.
of course dummie....
Stay gold.
Great video, showed me exactly what they are doing to my car right now.
Hey scotty I have a 1992 ford f350 2wd the transmission is leaking out of the transmission over flow think that's what is called only when it running it's leaking bad what do I do
Art Garde you know this video it from 3 years ago
Love your videos Scotty

i like the paradise part, have a merry Christmas and a happy new year.
Scotty Kilmer
I just had my transmission fluid changed.
Scotty your a legend, keep up the good work !
Can I use JB weld on the seals? Mine still leaks after replacing with a new one.
Stay gold.
@@dnlmachine4287 maybe the socket used on the axle nut
Any tips ?
yes buy a Toyota or Honda
Hope your vacation clears up bright and sunny for ya! Merry Christmas!
So I had replaced my axle, then noticed a leak, replaced the seal, and it’s still leaking? It’s soaked around the axle so I know that’s where it’s leaking from but I have no clue why, maybe I got the wrong seal??
Update ???
Recently i got my torque converter fix and i went to a road trip but my transmission leak and it seem to be the seal would the mechanic know the seal was bad or how often do you replace em
Do you check the transmission oil while the engine is running or shut off?
Is it needed to drain the transmission sump previously, or I can take the trasnaxle out of the car that it won't leak a lot of fluid?
Happy Holidays Scotty
Will just cleaning the vent fix the axle seeping?
Some oil seals need to be driven in to a specific depth and not bottomed out. It's a good idea to check the factory service manual to see if the seal has a limited depth or not.
Good Job scotty love your channel.. My question is do you drain the transmission oil before changing the seal?
no
Could you cover changing fluid in a Manuel transmission, my 06 focus zx3 has a leak.
So, i know i have a leak, but at the same time, my gears grind badly, will replacing the seal fix this grinding sound?
man i love this guy
I pretty much did the exact same job for the exact same reason (Leaking Axle seals ) on my 1993 Dodge Shadow like 5 years ago. Another place I've seen Transmitions leak is the oil line to the external transmition oil cooler.
Hi Scott: what is the difference between a red transmission oil and the clear one, aren’t the two of them the same?
I watched all your videos,, and good video I learned a lot with your videos...
Nice. Thank you
I don't know if you have done it or not but if you have not, you should do a video on replacing valves and header gaskets
The dealer wanted $60 for that little 10 dollar seal.... and the dealer is the only place you can get one...
Scotty could fix the most beat up car!!
He Scotty, how long should it take to replace the seals in the transmission(axel) on the Saturn sl1?
I could do it in 45 minutes, you would probably take a lot longer
originally my third and fourth gears were gone.a friend of mine rebuilt it.when driven it had same problem 3rd and 4th.then he replaced governor pressure silenoid.ran fine couple days.now there's something loose spinning inside and a grinding between 2nd and 3rd gear.also slamming when letting off gas
is it a older rav 4?
I love this guy's video's, taught me alot. thank u
Pls help, Some people said you must leave the transmission to cold down before changing the oil seal, else you will damage the trans
I've just gotten into the habit of replacing axle seals every time I replace half shafts. It's just a few bucks more and a few minutes more time at that point and it saves a lot of time of having to go back and redoing it because the old seals started leaking from being disturbed by the shaft removal.
