The Tohunga were by far, the most ADORABLE Matoran ever. Especially in the Mata Nui Online Game. The way they interact, express themselves-, you know what? Just play the game, and you'll might see what I mean.
Yeah, even if the design hasn't aged well in terms of articulation, I'd say it's never been topped in terms of sheer adorability. I'd buy a plushie of any of them.
The Maori controversy was actually addressed in a pretty civil way. The Maori were basically like "You took a bunch of our words, played fast and loose with what they actually meant, trademarked them, and now you're making money off of them. Could you please not." And Lego was like "Sure dude. Can we keep the old names though?" And the Maori were like "Sure but some of those words are special to us so change the spelling please, and the word tohunga is really special, it basically means priest, so please change that to something else." And that's what Lego did. Thus: Matoran. A word that was made up out of respect to real tribal elders.
Fun fact: Huki was later reissued sometime in 2003 as part of the promotion involving the C1000 supermarket chain in Holland. The 2003 variant of Huki has a slightly different packaging, with the McDonalds logo removed entirely. Also, the instruction booklet in that re-release omits any and all references to the other McToran, and the ad for Pohatu was replaced with the ad for the Rahkshi.
Here's two fun facts for you all: The purple Pakari was featured in the Nui Jaga set as pincer-fist things And the heads of the CT orange were featured as the head pieces for a lego Technic canister sett line-up themed around Hockey players! Y'see the helmet portion of the head would slide onto the back of the peice (locked in place by a Technic axle that goes through that pinhole on the head piece ) and wore various faceplate that utilized the same system as the toa masks!
I would have to say in my opinion, in 2001 it was worth getting all six, but hear me out, I say this because, though they are identical, you were buying a meal, and likely to go to Mcdonalds even possibly 6 times during their run-time, at that rate, getting 6 happy meals and asking for a specific color, which they would mostly comply with, makes these to me worth getting all six over something like the bohrok,of course, I unfortunately didn't know about them during their promotion, though I liked bionicle, I didn't get one until I found Matoro at a garage sale for $0.25 :)

Huh... I didn't know about the disk being able to attach to their heads. That's really cool. My first Bionicles were Matoro and Maku from this group, so it's really interesting to learn something new about their sets after such a long time XD
I think the reason that Maku's mask is different is that they didn't want to mold a clear part, probably to save money since these were cheap sets. You wouldn't be able to see her eyes with an opaque Kaukau, so they went with another mask. The Huna is an odd choice considering it's also used by one of the Turaga, but I guess there were only so many existing molds to choose from back then.
This was one of my favourite Happy Meal sets. I was on the hunt for the green one. I tried 3 different McDonald's restaurants and ended up getting the black one, the blue one, and the red one (out of those 3, I'd say that the blue one was my favourite because her mask was different from Gali).
I remember getting Kongu. Plus, I think you should review Makuta (Teridax) next, and he's got such wicked mask in the form of the Kanohi Kraahkan, the Great Mask of Shadows! Fun-fact; Kanohi masks that are worn by the Makuta are made of Protosteel, which is also used for their armor and weaponry. Makuta Kanohi masks aren't known to be made from Kanoka disks, just pure outright Protosteel.
I remember pulling through the McDonalds Drivethru as a kid and seeing Bionicle as the Toy of the first time. Easily the best kids meal toy they've ever given out. They sure knew how to reel 'em in back then

I'm from New Zealand, so I've been exposed to the Maori language all my life, and there's a few things I would like to correct you on. 'Maori' is pronounced with the vowel sounds of the word 'moldy', but with a rolled 'r' sound instead of 'ld'. Also, while this may not apply to the creators / writers of Bionicle, 'Wh' makes an 'F' sound in the Maori language. For example, 'Whenua' would be pronounced 'Fenua'. Hope you didn't mind a quick Maori lesson from me :3 . Like I said, I'm a huge fan and I can't wait to see what you review next.

I know it’s kinda weird, but I always used to think that Maku was the only blue male Toa because of the sound of his voice in Bionicle: Mask of Light when Hahli says, “Nice shot!” And he replied, “Good shooting yourself Hahli!” In a very manly voice.
Sucks that Hahli wasn't a McToran because her mask is the coolest and she is also a future member of the Toa Inika and Toa Mahri along with the rest of the group (excluding Macku). At least now Macku and Hewkii (Huki) can have their "moments" (*wink-wink*) now that they are in the same group.
I think they did not put Hahli in the it becuase they wanted to save the unique translucent mask for Gali. By the way Nuparu is also missing from the group. At the time, I don't think LEGO had invented him yet, considering he is not in MNOG.

I never got any of these back in the day. I didn't even know about them until much later. I was also 5 when they would have been in the happy meals. I managed to get about 4 of them out of eBay lots. But until today , I also never knew about them storing their disc not their back.
Jaller actually wears a Noble Kanohi Hau which originally belonged to Turaga Lhikan. Noble Kanohi do still have access to the powers of their Great Kanohi variant.
They were released in October 2001, that's hardly "early" in the year. Anyway, I used to stick Jala's mask on Tahu as well. Not as a substitute for the golden Hau, but because I used to fuse him with Jala, DBZ-style. "Jahu" consisted of Tahu wearing the yellow Hau, Jala's torso attached to Tahu's left forearm, and Jala's legs stuck in Tahu's leg holes. I'd also swap Jala's arms around so that the throwing arm was right side up and discs could still be launched.
It's also the month my family visited Hawaii. Airport security was nuts at the time: every time we changed islands, we had to go back to Oahu first. One of the security lines was literally three hours long. We almost canceled or postponed the trip (which we'd had planned months in advance) because we knew it would be like that.
+Alex Dalton A better way to do it is if you take a thin butterknife, you can slip the tip in under the part where it normally connects to the pin axle, and leverage it out from there. I much prefer this way of doing it, since it tends to have much less of a chance of damaging something, compared to Armanix's way.

I call it True Garuburn, its parts. the MachCore,UltimateArms, the red see trough DX feet, in the back of the feet the extra feet things from UltimateGaruburn and in the front the ones from the normal blastarm, the blue see trough head from the DX set in combination with the red head wings and yellow front piece from UltimateGaruburn. But ofcourse he also has to have the back piece from the blastarm.
They should have made hali, cuz than she had DARK BLUE legs, and that is not in galis colorsceme. She would also have had a kaukau wich is also on the bamboo disc

I think the other reason is that if Maku had a translucent mask, she'd also need to have translucent feet. All the others share foot and mask colors.

You could make a custom hahli,just take macku,and replace the huna with a kaukau,for nuparu,he came with the boxor set
I only have two of Maku, but the punching arm is broken and the Hanu is missing on one so I gave her a Piraka mandible as a replacement.
