My heart still aches 42 years years after seeing this movie! Jane Seymour was the most beautiful creature, and still is! Christopher Reeve was so young and gorgeous, and my feelings of sadness are deepened, knowing the tragedy that followed. The casting was perfect! Thank you putting this video together. You did an amazing work!
I've been to the filming locations so many times. I grew up in Northern Michigan. It's a stunning locale that just begs to be used for a film. It's a shame more movies aren't filmed there.
Sadly, this movie really does get to me ..as did '#RemainsOfTheDay'. And #JohnBarry scores tend to be brilliantly evocative.✌️ I do feel like a fool, though, being moved by this kind of thing.
Kerry Even in person, my wife and I ended up seated next to her and her then husband for lunch poolside at a beach resort in Puerto Rico. Later that night my wife ended up sitting with her husband at a blackjack table. Jane was filming on the island and became ill. She looked great no makeup in a swimsuit!
Somewhere in Time has been my favorite movie since it came out in 1980. After 43 years, I still cry at the end. Plus my favorite music. Best movie ever.
One of the coolest things about the movie is how he fell in love with her face in the photo. She was obviously looking at something, and reacting to it when the photo was taken. We find out later that what she was looking at was him. So he was seeing her love for him in the photo without being aware of it. So well-written.
There is a story behind the photo. When Richard turns around to see the photo that is in fact the 1st time Reeve does see the photo and that is his actual reaction. He told the director that the scene needed to be just perfect and the only way that it could be is if he saw the photo for the 1st time. So when Reeves entered the area where the photo was, The crew had the photo covered and when he turned around the curtain was being pulled away.
@Joseph Wilson Another sad fact. Chris knew that the horse he was going to ride had an injury but used the horse in the competition anyway and I think that's why the horse did what it did. Very sad what happened to him. He'll always be missed. His wife was so heart broken that when she found out she had cancer she refused treatments so their young song lost both parents. Like the movie I like to think think they're back together again.
The movie was a big hit when it was shown internationally. For crazy reasons, it came and went quietly in the USA. Most of us that love this movie saw it later on video or HBO. I watched it for the 1st time on HBO in 1982.
Sadly I think one of the reasons it did so poorly at the box office was because Christopher Reeves had been typecast as the invincible Superman, and people didn't want to see him in a role where he was very vulnerable.
Did you know that they were actually in love for real ? I read it somewhere, they were going to be together, for real, but there was a change of plan, as Christopher s previous lady came back on the scene saying that she was expecting his child, so he went back to her. - So that's enough to have you in tears! Just like the film! F.
Chris Reeve, during an interview said when he flew his private plane and would visit different areas of USA, he was asked most often NOT about Superman but Somewhere in Time! He was shocked and pleased that this movie meant so much to so many people and I have to say, Chris Reeve was a real superman in that people who have been paralyzed are now walking thanks to research done from his trust fund for medical research in that type injury!
Superman himself ! Chris was Super in all he did ! He will never be forgotten! I miss him as a person of Quality movies ! 💞 I'm a guy who feels so much for greatness ! Reeves was a great person and a actor ! Rest in peace Superman ! 🌹
I was a nurse you're tired now I took care of quadriplegics paraplegics and brain injury the money he put into researches essential and needs to go on but this is indeed one of my favorite movies of all time
Whenever I need a good cry, I just watch the last 10 minutes of this movie. First time I ever saw it, I was 7 years old...43 now, this movie has stuck with me ever since.
As a child that came into awareness in the 1980s this film holds a special place in my heart forever as the ultimate romantic drama. Rest in peace Christopher Reaves.
I absolutely love this movie. The score really grabs your heart. Beautifully written at a time when Mr. Barry was in emotional pain. I get goosebumps every time I watch it and in tears by the end. I've noticed most people either love it or hate it. Not really any middle ground. Thanks for the video.
This film is an absolute masterpiece! I've loved it since it was released, wasn't aware that it had grown so much in popularity but I can see why it has and I'm glad that so many others have grown to appreciate it.
I first saw this when I was about 6 or 7 and cried my heart out. Eventually after several years I managed to get it on dvd and cd. Breaks my heart every time I watch it. The score is absolutely fantastic.
Tina Nuttall .. same here, I was just a baby but the music stayed in my head until years later. Heard it randomly one day and ran to the stereo at my job, it was my employers casette tape! I was like OMG it’s the music!! I couldn’t believe I remembered the music I heard when I was a child! So impacting.. great stories and sharing every time I played that music at work. My boss actually had it because she got married at the Grand Hotel where it was filmed. Love the comments here!
It is a beautiful film and always makes me cry at the end. My goodness, the acting, and the stunning music. It is just a splendid, unsung underrated', film that I personally adore...
Strange story here. So I’m older almost 50 and I must have seen this movie when it came out in the 80’s. I don’t remember watching it. Fast forward almost 20 years and I have my first child. My partner and I searched for baby names as you do and we settled on Collier. We loved the name and it fit our baby boy. Two years later my partner came to me with the name McKenna for the little girl we were expecting. A few years later I’m watching some random cable channel and this movie was on. I was shocked 🤯 to say the least when I realized we’d named our children the main characters of this movie. It still freaks me out and Collier is 20 and McKenna will be 17 next week. Many blessings for reading this long post.
My maiden sir name was Collier, my father's full name was Roy James Richard Collier, so almost the same as the Character in the film, Chris Reeve was one of my favourite actors. Its deeply tragic what happened to him. So sad. This is my favourite film, My other favourite film is Titanic. Not just because there are simalarities between the two films, but just because they just happen to both be my favourite films. Also, another one of my favourite dramatisations is The Thorn Birds mini series, and Robinson is also in that film, acting as a priest. Faye.
Awesome movie. Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour are amazing, but its the older Elise (Susan French) delivering the one line that is the hook of the movie. I believe her only line, but she makes it count. "Come back to me."
This was my first husband's favorite film. I found it too sad during his life, and I still feel the same way now. I literally cannot watch it without crying over my loss of Keith. If I knew we could and would be together again, I would try to imitate the Christopher Reeve character. Maybe we'll meet again after I die, though I'm not eager to do so.
One of my favorite movies and soundtracks. I did stay at the Grand Hotel several years ago and it was a GRAND experience! I would love to return one day.
Vincent Valentino Agreed! Somewhere In Time is a rare true cinematic masterpiece. What’s so sad is that if this film was released today (with some minor tweaking to believe it’s a current film)- it would be bashed by critics. The majority of them (especially the more popular ones) are swayed with “incentives”; and this film having a low budget would not “accommodate” most of them.
My late wife loved this movie since we saw it together in 1980. I continue to watch it from time to time in memory of her. But one note about the music: John Barry said, before he passed away, that when he was at a party or with other people, of all the movies he wrote (incl. not only the Bonds but Dances with Wolves and Out of Africa) this is the theme that his friends would most frequently ask him to play (at their piano). The Roger Williams version (on the soundtrack) is wonderful and I picked up the sheet music years ago and still play it today...it's just so darned beautiful.
Yes, I know about that. In an interview in an excellent PBS documentary on Barry he talks about how that score is possibly one of the most emotionally moving of all his works because it was written just after both his parents had passed away. All his scores of that short period, 1980-85 "Out of Africa", "Raise the Titanic", "High road to China" and others are all richly scored, orchestrated and performed and very deeply emotional. I highly recommend a listen to them.
@@andreking5714 Thanks, Andre. I am very familiar with Out of Africa (as mentioned), but not the others. So thanks for the tip. Is the PBS documentary still available on the PBS app? (do you know...)
@@jbbevan It was called "John Barry: Moviola" and was aired in the early 90's. I saw it twice then but not since. There was a companion soundtrack released at the same time which you can easily find on Ebay and Amazon. Barry conducted the music themes used in the special himself.
I was doing a tourist thing back in the mid 1980's and that included a trip to Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, the famed shopping stop for the movie folks. While in one of the stores, I looked across the room and saw Jane Seymour at one of the counters. I so wanted to approach her and thank her for her performance in "Somewhere In Time". However, between being shy and and also polite I just could not work up the nerve to do so. I've regretted it to this day. My favorite scene in the movie is at the end when she screams out "Richard" and runs to his embrace. That's never happened to me and at 78 years, I know it never will. I still love the movie. A trivia note about the soundtrack, It was only on the album charts at Billboard for 2 weeks, peaking at #187, but it sold well over a million copies and earned a "Platinum Award".
I understand that fear, Jim. I had it, too. For some reason, on the occasions when I had chances to meet as well as have private conversations with famous people, I overcame my fear, did it, anyway. Although I was shaking with fear, could barely say 2 intelligible words when I met John Travolta, he was so warm, so genuine, I managed to calm down enough to be able to think straight then have a short, pleasant conversation with him.
Thank you for doing this one. I saw this film in 1980 in the theatre and it's one of the most beautiful, haunting and yes, saddest films I've ever seen. Well worth the viewing.
The Time Travel film craze in the 80s started with Nicholas Myers' "Time After Time" in 1979. However the "Is it you?" scene in this film is among the most beautiful things recorded to American cinema.
Thank you! I so totally wanted to correct him but it's not like he can hear me in the video LOL. Now that movie was awesome. A little cheesy sometimes compared to modern movies and Lord knows that they didn't manage to make a good remake of it but I'm glad because the original was pretty darn awesome.
This is magic, the film, the music, the cast.. it’s all very special. The music is hauntingly beautiful and I remember hearing it as a child for the first time, it had such a tremendous impact on me, years later as an adult I heard it at my job and dropped everything I was doing to run and see what music my boss had placed in our stereo. At the time it was rare that anyone would have had an actual “cassette tape” of the soundtrack, I was shocked but borrowed and copied it. Whenever I played it at work people would drift off into a reverie or share deep stories about their lives. It was as if it had the power to unlock people’s minds, tear down inhibitions. If you love S.I.T., Barry’s music is something that grips you and you can tell when he has composed the soundtrack to other films without being told. Great video facts here.. A+ from a fan of the film! So much can be said about this film and it’s impact..👌🏻❤️
This will always be a classic, one of the most beautiful casts, writing, directing, acting, costumes, setting, musical score, and the never ending tragedy of a great love lost, the wonder of time travel, and the life in the hereafter, all done with the main characters being the most handsome of men, and the most beautiful of women(yes, she IS, and so he WAS). Particularly powerful was the musical score, the writer being in a rather melancholy mood from the loss of both his parents, it all came together to create the timeless classic. This movie contains a scene I feel is the best acting I have ever seen, by Christopher Reeve, or ANY OTHER ACTOR, was the scene where he accidentally is torn from 1912, back to the present. How Richard tried to go back to 1912, the acting there by Reeves is devastating, probably because many of us would so love to go back in time and right the wrongs we did, that desperate, painful want, but futile desire to be the happiest we have ever been, again. We have all been Richard, at some time, or will be, and like him, will not be able, not in this life. I am reminded of Poe's "The Raven", but this movie affords them a new chance in the hereafter. I can watch this movie hundreds of times and never tire of it. Yes. I have.
Exactly the same as you. Hundreds of times on video taped from tv in the 1980s. Even now Alan when the actress Susan French as the older Elise says “come back to me” at the beginning of the film my eyes fill with tears as I think on a personal note how I would say those words to a real person in my own life. But that will never be.
They remained very close friends right up until the end. Then Jane Seymour was there for his late wife as well. Says something about friendship and love
Oh, how could there be anything less than loving friendship, when they created the most powerful love story on film, the both of them being the fine people they were and are.
I am definitely one of the people who saw and enjoyed this when it came out. It was a good movie to go see with my wife, and with Chris Reeve in the lead, I knew it couldn't be all bad ... and was completely swept away with a good story well told. And it was cinematographically beautiful.
The penny in Richard's pocket probably was not put there by Robinson. Earlier in the film Richard is preparing himself to go back and discovers there is loose change in that little extra pocket. He empties it but we know from doing laundry that pennies always stay deep in pockets until being washed out. Also, F.W. Robinson had gone back some years earlier than Richard and not likely the same year he traveled back. It is my feeling that yes, he was a time traveler himself as well. That would really be the only way he could know so much about Elise and her career. If he had the coin in his possession and was conscience of it he would have broken his own time travel trance. The question you never ask is what about the watch? At the beginning of the film Elise, an aged old woman gives a pocket watch to Richard and says to him "Come back to me..." She then leaves and passes away later that night. When Richard goes back in time he takes the watch with him and Elise admiring it's beauty asks him where he got it. He responds "It was a gift". Elise is holding the watch when Richard is thrust back into the present after seeing the modern penny and thus allowing her to keep it for 60+ years so she can give it to him again. This makes the watch a time travel enigma having never been manufactured in past or present and just existing.
I am convinced that the penny was left there by the previous owner using it as a costume who then dropped it at a thrift shop where Richard purchased it.
@@marcoblanco3432 Marco, That is a interesting thought. I am going to have to think that out. . . , very good, interesting. I enjoy this movie so much it IS my most favorite movie of all I watch a few times a year. "Love in time of the Cholera is a excellent love story movie too", Enjoyed your comment.
André, ever since I first saw the movie, I came out of the cinema asking myself and my mates: «What about the watch? Where did it came from in the first place? She gives it to him, then he brings it to the past and so she gets it from him and she keeps it. I concluded that is the time-object paradox that seems to appear or take place in most of time travelling stories or movies. At that time I had more examples, though, so sorry I dont remember them just now, but if I do, I'll come back to tell you
I love this movie so much. It brings me to tears. The possibility that love could be so powerful and moving, is wonderful. I never tire of watching it.
My great grandmother was born on Mackinac Island, my great grandfather often did maintenance at The Grand Hotel. My family and myself were actually on the island when this movie was being filmed summer of 79, unfortunately I was six moths old at the time so I can't tell you much about that trip. For me this was an unexpected addition to your collection of films, very nice! I could watch your videos all day!
My romantic husband loved this movie so much that when he died, I buried him with a copy. The best men are in touch with their feminine side. Miss you Don, will be with you sooner than later. Watch for me...
It's so lovely to know that your husband didn't hide his emotions a rarity in this day and age I also lost my husband 8yrs ago I miss him very much but we'll meet again I'm just waiting for the.lord to call me I miss you David.
It’s amazing to see a review of this movie on RUclips ...such a great but unspoken classic romance movie . Thank you for delving into this movie and novel
One of the coolest crossovers is in the movie Groundhog Day when Phil plays the theme from Somewhere In Time on the piano (he just learned to play) at the Groundhog Day ball. That was sweet!
Love this movie. I have since I first saw it, at the theater in 1980. I also have loved the score, I found it moving more than tragic. The photo of Jane Seymour is one of my all time favorite movie props. That very small smile of joy that lights up her face is mesmerizing.
My girlfriend introduced me to it, our Relationship didn’t last but I was absolutely mesmerized by this film, the ending moved me greatly, soundtrack was so beautiful
One little piece of trivia is: the day the “penny” scene was filmed, Christopher Reeve learned he was going to be a father for the first time with his then partner, Gae Exton.
It was the reason why Jane Seymour found out why they could never be together. Chris and Jane fell madly in love while making this film but it was a love that could never be. They both became long-time friends because of their magical connection though.
I remember my mother watching this all the time growing up. I remember bits and pieces of it. I do remember it being wicked sad! Thanks for the stroll down memory lane Minty. Love your reviews. Keep up the great work buddy.
I only cry every time I see it. Not quite like a baby but close. Maybe like an unstable person? Its so darn sad and overwhelming with the good feelings at the same time!
I loved this movie and of course the music is compelling. I should point out that Rachmaninoff would take exception to giving credit to Barry for writing the score as Rachmaninoff is the name on the sheet music I play called, "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini". You should say Barry adapted the music to be fair to the great Rachmaninoff.
I just happened to watch this movie today for the very first time. I cried all the way through-I’ve been a big fan of Jane Seymour since East Of Eden,a made-for-tv mini-series from the 1970’s. The chemistry between her and Christoper Reeve is so palpable it makes one blush! 😌
@@Cydonia2020 A lot of ignorant people from Southern states think Michigan is the armpit of America. Detroit is a small portion, and not like it was a couple of decades ago. Yes, there is winter here, but it's not that bad, and the other seasons make living in MI worth it. All we have to do now is get rid of the democrats in office and radical muslims.
dewfall56 l lived in Michigan for 27 years; 11 in Marquette and 16 in Lansing. I hope one day to move back there. It is a beautiful state, no matter what your political affiliation is.
I came across the movie by accident one day and fell in love with it. A shame this movie did not get the credit it deserved when it came out. Great acting, and I loved the chemistry between Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve. Jane Seymour never looked more beautiful than in this movie. The movie also had beautiful music, costumes, and scenery. Just a lovely movie!
Coincidentally, this movie came on the TV of a neighbor I had just stopped by to say hello to, and I ended up watching it with her. I have always loved this beautiful movie, hadn't seen it in awhile, and was very happy and excited to see it again. It is classic! The story, the actors, the setting, the music.....everything about it is just wonderful!
Filming it on Mackinac Island and at the Grand Hotel was a brilliant idea with their severely limited budget. They didn't need to do any set dressing at all. All they needed to do was put the extras in period clothing. They could shoot it today. If you are a fan of this movie and have the chance you should visit the island. Once you get off of the main street you are back in time.
I was there in 1995. Beautiful, unique and quiet little town (best fudge ever!). If I ever move back to Michigan, I would happily consider living there.
I watched this film tonight because i met someone very special...we both felt as if we have known each other before. So i suggested that we watch it. This review was very intriguing and it made me appreciate it even. Please keep up the great work. 💕
thank you infinitely for teaching me of this beautiful truth! I must edit my original post attributing this piece to John Barry when in fact, it was simply his interpretion and not his composition. The credit should go to the amazing Rachmaninov Concerto No. 2 mov 4 (Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini)!!! Please check him out here: ruclips.net/video/basbNFDV5Jg/видео.html
The music box plays Rachmaninoff but the music theme that everyone loves was written by John Barry who wrote beautiful unforgettable music to other movies also! He said he'd written this theme right after his father died and he was inspired by his missing his father's influence in his life!
@@simonkennedy6116 Ah, I see. Definitely worth having on DVD or Blu-ray, though it is a bit hard to watch now since Reeves is gone. Reminds me of Robin William's beautifully, though tragic, done film "What Dreams May Come", since that one is so strongly emotional now with Robin's passing and that he took his own life (due to the anti-depressant drugs he was on which was found to cause suicidal tendencies), very much like his character in the film.
When you start to unpack this movie to its deeper meanings it can get pretty amazing. Having grown up in Michigan and spent some time ( 3X I think) on Mackinac Island it has a special place in my heart. I remember running as a 3-4 years old on the front porch of the grand hotel and being there on the island years later so I can attest to the time shift one can have being there. With no cars allowed on the island it puts you back into the late 1800's. Your frame of reference is suspended. All perfect paraells for the movie. When I first saw this movie I was in a altered state for weeks. The aspects you can come contact within yourself are profound including that when you fall in love with someone what you are experiencing along with them is the profound love that is the basis and connection of all of the universe. Thats the main reason why many have a transendent experience because you are experiencing that which is beyond ones imediate self. This movie capture this point perfectly. This is much more I can say maybe later peace
Perfectly stated and described, thank you so much! Leaving time travelling aside, I agree that this sensations can be really experienced an deeply felt and gone through. I share this way you feel
Somewhere in time has a connection to a Australian children's show which is slightly different to the story but has time travel in the title of this was similar to the movie but very different ending as I remember one other strange thing about the film it was set in the same place where Practical Magic was filmed and I think near to where the Fog was filmed to there's a lighthouse I not to sure if it was original film or the remake?
The movie became a classic, not because it was sad, but because it was inspirational. It touched the HEART (an organ most critics don't seem to possess). On a personal note....when I came out of the theatre (after see this movie) there was a woman crying, and trying to unlock my car with her key and having no luck of course. So, I said, why don't we try MY key and see if it works. Then, she apologized and said that she had just come from seeing the movie SOMEWHERE IN TIME, still crying profusely, and "It was SO BEAUTIFUL.." She walked off sobbing, looking for her car. True story.
Robert Gold I saw all those and more. I wasn’t bothered though. I loved Titanic, and saw it as a tribute to SIT. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
I have compared both movies in the past on another web site. Titanic was a very, dramatic movie about the sinking of a ship in the White Starr line, to in which I know of many other ships owned and operated by the same outfit. On the other hand, this movie, Somewhere In Time, also deals with a tragic love lost in the very end and is a much more touching movie due to the composed music by John Berry. Both are great movies, both deal exclusively with tragic loss of love, both, touch your heart is a special, heartfelt manner and way.
I loved this film. The ending when he accidentally broke his hypnosis broke my heart. I always asked myself, “How could one live after losing your one true love?” I think his character dying was a beautiful blessing.
Indeed, I thought he was blessed that in his timeline he died so soon after being separated from Elise to be reunited with her in the Afterlife, whereas in her timeline she had to wait 60 years before being reunited with him, during which time she became very withdrawn and reclusive due to depression, when before she had been outgoing and happy.
An unbelievably beautiful movie highly underrated that everyone should see. this is not just a romance, this is a glorious love story. Have a box of tissues.
Thank you for reviewing this film. It's not the most mainstream picture, so it's good to see it receiving attention from a popular RUclipsr such as yourself. I was totally blindsided by how involved and mesmerizingly romantic Somewhere In Time is, to the point where it's now one of my favorite romance films. The genre can really be hit-or-miss, as at its lowest it can make for some incredibly sappy and maudlin stories. But at its highest, I'm in the film's hands, riding every step along with the on-screen couple.
This movie was doing very well In Hong Kong back then. There was a cinema that showing nothing else but this movie 4 times a day for whole year. To most people here, Reeves is even better known as Richard than its famous role as Superman.
James Cameron also used the plot element from Somewhere in Time in The Terminator, where the woman photographed, at the time of the snapshot, was thinking about the man who fell in love with her when he later saw the picture, and the connection he felt inspired him to travel back in time to meet her.
I'm not big on romance films but this is by far one of my most favorite movies of all time and the music is hauntingly beautiful I still watch it over and over again
It has always been one of my favorite films since it first came out. John Barry's music is so haunting. I didn't realize his parents died not long before he was asked to compose the score. Many of his film scores have a haunting quality. Thank you for your video and your insights. I had never thought that Christopher Plummer's character could have been a time traveler! May you have a healthy, prosperous and joyous New Year and New Decade! Best wishes, Dianna
I visited Mackinac Island with my husband and granddaughter. She and I both loved this movie. Staying at the Grand Hotel and exploring this beautiful island was a truly magical experience! The movie is my all time favorite and I adore the Grand Hotel. ❤️
One of the things which I think makes this movie timeless is that Seymour in the photograph embodies the story. Captivating, mysterious, beautiful beyond words. How could you not fall in love.
Did anyone notice that Arthur, the hotelier, as a child asked Richard if he had ever met him before. But there was no reason why Richard would look familiar to Arthur the child, but he would look familiar to Arthur the adult.
One of the most beautiful movies and soundtracks ever made.
I love the music. I have the piano sheet music from the main theme and play it a lot; a beautiful piece by John Barry.
She was beautiful in this movie, what man wouldn't fall in love with her. Love this movie.
I've been to the filming locations so many times. I grew up in Northern Michigan. It's a stunning locale that just begs to be used for a film. It's a shame more movies aren't filmed there.
Sadly, this movie really does get to me ..as did '#RemainsOfTheDay'. And #JohnBarry scores tend to be brilliantly evocative.✌️
I do feel like a fool, though, being moved by this kind of thing.
I could not agree more. I love this movie.
*Jane Seymour has always been so stunningly beautiful.* ❤️
Kerry Even in person, my wife and I ended up seated next to her and her then husband for lunch poolside at a beach resort in Puerto Rico. Later that night my wife ended up sitting with her husband at a blackjack table. Jane was filming on the island and became ill. She looked great no makeup in a swimsuit!
Kerry and Christopher Reeve was always a handsome man . :)
Still is
Jane and Christopher made a beautiful couple.
I Totally agree!!
💜💜💜😥
oh the humanity
This hurts 😭
So not only did "Somewhere in Time" influence "Titanic" but also "The Terminator"
RIP Christopher Reeve, we'll miss you. You made us believe a man can fly.
R.I.P. also Maude Ewing Adams Kiskadden who shall not be confused with the Bond girl Maud Adams.

Unfortunately Christopher wasn't invulnerable unlike his character Superman.
Christopher Reeve did fly because his spirit, courage, and determination took off I all our hearts
One of my favorite movies and also one of the saddest I've ever watched. Reeve and Seymour were perfectly cast in their roles.
Agreed!
You think that’s sad go rent Lady Hawk.
On the contrary...it had a very good ending which most either forget or don’t realize.
Are you referring to Somewhere in time or Lady Hawk?
Chris and Jane did a beautiful job .❤❤❤❤

I adore this movie and even though it’s very sad, the love of these two people is so beautiful. I think it’s one of the best movies of all time 💜
First I saw the movie, then read the novel, then found a biography of the actress Maud Adams. ...wow....
Chris was always the Man the World miss him but will met again ...
Superman himself ! Chris was Super in all he did ! He will never be forgotten! I miss him as a person of Quality movies ! 💞 I'm a guy who feels so much for greatness ! Reeves was a great person and a actor ! Rest in peace Superman ! 🌹
He was, and is, and always will be a true Super Man, the real hero! No one demonstrated more strength than Christopher Reeve.
Imagine That!
From being struck with paralysis to walking, a lot of trust in that trust fund!
Tara Diane,.. ME TOO!
(Although I was 11 when I first watched it.)

I love this movie, everything about it. I have a 30+ year old vhs copy in my safe. It's the only movie I have kept in there.

As a child that came into awareness in the 1980s this film holds a special place in my heart forever as the ultimate romantic drama.
Rest in peace Christopher Reaves.

"Somewhere in Time" is one of the underrated cinematic films of all time.
It so is!!!
So true!
EmperorWildManChan - I'm sure you believe that but it isn't necessarily everyone else's opinion.
There are a lot of movies that are underrated that seem to be most of the ones
that are not blockbuster hits.
Very good narration!🤗
I absolutely love this movie. The score really grabs your heart. Beautifully written at a time when Mr. Barry was in emotional pain. I get goosebumps every time I watch it and in tears by the end. I've noticed most people either love it or hate it. Not really any middle ground. Thanks for the video.
I Love It!
This film is an absolute masterpiece! I've loved it since it was released, wasn't aware that it had grown so much in popularity but I can see why it has and I'm glad that so many others have grown to appreciate it.
John Barry wrote the most beautiful theme i've ever heard, for this movie. RIP Mr. Barry.
Barry did it for 5% of 5he take. Which turned out to be millions!
My relative.
The main theme is not by Barry... its Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini by Rachmaninov
It is s piece by Rocmanaoff I messed up his name
@@robinchun1 That’s one . The real main theme is written by John Barry named ‘ Somewhere in time’ !
This is one of my favourite films ever. Great music, classy actors and makes you feel like you have actually lived the experience with him.
Faye.
What an amazing story. You definitely have some kind of deeper connection with this beautiful film!
I am 48, I watched this movie when I was 10. It was my mom's favorite movie, it has always stayed in my heart. It's one of my all time favorites!!
When I was 16 this movie made me cry like I was 2. Beautiful movie. I'm so happy to see someone talk about it. 💖
That's something else I didn't know about Somewhere in time!
Best movie EVER - 2 characters perfectly cast together - RIP Christopher, you will always be remembered - cheers from Canada
@veganhigler6541what?
Awesome movie. Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour are amazing, but its the older Elise (Susan French) delivering the one line that is the hook of the movie. I believe her only line, but she makes it count.
"Come back to me."
Between her one line and when Richard realizes he's met her after seeing her picture in the magazine. The movie is phenomenal
I've loved this movie for decades! I'm glad to know it's become a cult classic.
One of my favorite movies and soundtracks. I did stay at the Grand Hotel several years ago and it was a GRAND experience! I would love to return one day.
The long verandah and rocking chairs at the Grand Hotel is the place to chill.

One of my favourite movies of all time. A cinematic masterpiece!!!
It's a good film but it IS NOT
a cinematic masterpiece.
Indeed. See my comment.
Mine too...love that period and the music is hypnotic😎
Mine too
My late wife loved this movie since we saw it together in 1980.
Jim, the scene you speak of: "Richard" is my favourite scene too :) It may not have happened to you, but, "It ain't over till it's over " ;) xx
No it’s never happened to me either 😢😢😢😢😢
Let’s thank John Barry for the outstanding music...
And Sergei Rachmaninoff.
@@seikibrian8641 yes, variation 18 Opus 43 on a theme of Paganini is superb!
S Tho yes a classic from 79!!!
"Is it you?" gets me every time I hear it.

A little cheesy sometimes compared to modern movies and Lord knows that they didn't manage to make a good remake of it but I'm glad because the original was pretty darn awesome.
Yefs its me
This is magic, the film, the music, the cast.. it’s all very special.
Yes. I have.
If you, sir, are not a writer, you should be! You perfectly captured the feeling and facts about this movie so perfectly!
How wonderfully you have described it!!! Thanks deeply
You failed to mention the riddle of the watch...from whence did it come?
@@toddparke8535 there is no logical answer!
The host doesnt mention that Jane Seymour named one of her twins after Christopher Reeve, who became her very good friend while filming this.
They remained very close friends right up until the end. Then Jane Seymour was there for his late wife as well. Says something about friendship and love
Oh, how could there be anything less than loving friendship, when they created the most powerful love story on film, the both of them being the fine people they were and are.
Oh wow...!
I never knew that. 😍😍😍😍😍❤❤❤❤
I didn't know that, makes me smile.
I enjoyed your comment
I am convinced that the penny was left there by the previous owner using it as a costume who then dropped it at a thrift shop where Richard purchased it.

Stop. I'm not sober enough to get that now. (Legal smoke here)
André, ever since I first saw the movie, I came out of the cinema asking myself and my mates: «What about the watch? Where did it came from in the first place? She gives it to him, then he brings it to the past and so she gets it from him and she keeps it. I concluded that is the time-object paradox that seems to appear or take place in most of time travelling stories or movies. At that time I had more examples, though, so sorry I dont remember them just now, but if I do, I'll come back to tell you
I love this movie so much. It brings me to tears. The possibility that love could be so powerful and moving, is wonderful. I never tire of watching it.

Love this movie. I have since I first saw it, at the theater in 1980. I also have loved the score, I found it moving more than tragic. The photo of Jane Seymour is one of my all time favorite movie props. That very small smile of joy that lights up her face is mesmerizing.

It’s because she went back in time to be with me. Good luck being alone.
One little piece of trivia is: the day the “penny” scene was filmed, Christopher Reeve learned he was going to be a father for the first time with his then partner, Gae Exton.
Had to be hard filming sadness, with the joy of a new baby.
One more Real Titanic connection, John Jaobb Astor, who died on the Titanic owned a summer home on Mackinac Island were Somewhere in Time was filmed.
What a great under-rated movie. Superman, time traveling, and sci-fi.
Technically, this would've been Christopher Reeves' second movie to include time-travel, right?
Chris Reeve was the best! He's my second favorite actor next to Gary Cooper. And this movie makes me cry everytime.
We all know but Rachmaninoff has just that piece, the rest was Barry’s compositions 🙄
98% of this score is all Barry.
Really there's only one piece in it by Rachmaninoff. The theme is all Barry.
I just happened to watch this movie today for the very first time. I cried all the way through-I’ve been a big fan of Jane Seymour since East Of Eden,a made-for-tv mini-series from the 1970’s. The chemistry between her and Christoper Reeve is so palpable it makes one blush! 😌

One of my favorite movies of all time. Well done. Excellent job.

I fell in love with this movie in the early 80's. The original music is Rachmaninoff. Beautiful. You're most touching video yet! Thank you Minty!!!
thank you infinitely for teaching me of this beautiful truth!
It’s still his composition. Both are beautiful!
Well, this was unexpected. Thanks Minty for reminding me of this lost classic

I think for a long time the soundtrack held the record for the biggest sales of any movie soundtrack.
you can get just the sound track

True story.

You said it perfectly!
I agree. I personally did not see anything “sappy” about the film, as so many of the critics claimed.
I love this movie! Beautiful and sad. They were both perfect for the movie. Great chemistry! Miss you Christopher Reeves! 😥❤❤
Yes yes yes!!!
One of my favorite movies. All these yrs later it still gets to me every time I watch it
This movie was doing very well In Hong Kong back then. There was a cinema that showing nothing else but this movie 4 times a day for whole year. To most people here, Reeves is even better known as Richard than its famous role as Superman.
Wow, that's cool! Thanks for sharing that. I love this movie.
@@MsBettyRubble I was thinking the same exact thing!
@@MrTruthseeker1987 I think a trip to Hong Kong is in order. It's obviously a very romantic city.
James Cameron also used the plot element from Somewhere in Time in The Terminator, where the woman photographed, at the time of the snapshot, was thinking about the man who fell in love with her when he later saw the picture, and the connection he felt inspired him to travel back in time to meet her.
I always felt the ending of titanic was very similar to this movie.
I'm not big on romance films but this is by far one of my most favorite movies of all time and the music is hauntingly beautiful I still watch it over and over again
One of my favourite movies of all time. For me it should have swept up at the Oscars that year.
I probably watched this 20 times on cable when I was growing up.
Great video Minty. This has always been and will always be one of my absolute favorite films.
One of my all time favorite films.
Best wishes,
Dianna
Who knew you were an old romantic at heart?
I just love that film. John Barry’s finest soundtrack.
Loved this movie, one of my all time favorites.
Jane was at a meeting my company had. She’s just as stunning in person!
Ooh, I love the idea that Robinson could also be a time traveler.
I know, I'm going to have to watch it again to see if I notice it.
@@blessedtag It all makes sense that he would be the one to make the 1979 penny appear, as he would do anything to sabotage their relationship.
Fabrisse ter Brugghe where did the watch come from?
Did anyone notice that Arthur, the hotelier, as a child asked Richard if he had ever met him before. But there was no reason why Richard would look familiar to Arthur the child, but he would look familiar to Arthur the adult.
