    Midsommar was a wild ride filled with visual metaphors, symbols, clues and secrets planted there by director Ari Aster. In this video I'll be breaking down the meaning of the movie, talking about some of the major themes such as the solar cycle and the circle of life, analysing the visuals, such as the "tea" trips, the symbols seen around the village and more!
    Who are "the ones" and what is their purpose? What was the deal with Pelle and why was he so interested in Dani and Christian? What is with the unclothed people? I (attempt) to answer these questions and many more in this episode.
    At the end of the video I'll be talking about the director, Ari Aster, and some of the trademarks seen in both of his films, but don't worry, I'll put a spoiler warning before I get into any of that!

    Other things you missed:
    1) The woman that escorted Mark away from the table, the next time we see her she has a few fresh bruises/cuts on her face and lip. Signifying that Mark put up a fight
    .
    2) In Dani's dream, she opened her mouth and blew out black smoke, referencing her sister who died from inhaling car exhaust fumes.
    3)
    Dani's family died during the winter; the seasonal end of the cycle.
    4) The painting we see in the very beginning of the movie is a summary of the entire storyline

But Dani clearly only stays with Christian because she thinks he's all she has left.

    • @gecks3464
      @gecks3464 5 лет назад +200

      MrJagermeister in the script, it describes that they were speaking gibberish. that was the point of, “we understand each other!”. since dani was so afraid of being outcasted and disconnecting herself from christian + friend group, that scene was supposed to represent her releasing the chains that held her back from being playful/silly with others. i highly doubt dani was able to learn the native language that fluently and whilst under psychoactive drugs...

    • @MrJagermeister
      @MrJagermeister 5 лет назад +41

      Jesa Loves Her Cows I mean, I definitely didn’t take it as her drinking and dancing and learning a foreign language by some sort of osmosis, haha. I’d be curious if someone that spoke Swedish could confirm it was gibberish, though. Or her version of the Swedish Chef from the “Muppets”, haha. Anyhow, I loved it because she was *happy* for the first time in the entire movie, she bonded with someone outside of the group she came with, and she made a connection in that moment (even if it was entirely in her head or gibberish or whatever).
      I mean, I’ve done mushrooms before and I felt like I could understand my dog for an evening, and they had plenty of other jokes and references to what it feels like to be tripping. (Especially the part where they argue about starting at separate times because they’ll be on different trips, or the guy telling everyone to lay down and not being able to settle until they do, or the way she saw herself in the mirror and ran out screaming, or the gorgeous representation of the trees and landscape and environment breathing and faces warping... the director and cinematographer/vfx crew definitely did some mushrooms/LSD at some point because I’ve never seen a movie nail it so perfectly).

    When they first get to the village & the others are running around playing a game they ask what they are doing & Pelle answers that they are playing "skin the fool". Later when Mark is killed it's revealed that he was skinned. At the end his skin is stuffed like a doll & dressed up in a jester costume so he looks like a "fool". He was the character added for comedic effect in the film, like a jester.
    The crying scene when Dani finds out Christine is "cheating" on her was one of my favorite parts of the film.
    The crying reminded me of a trick one might do with a baby. It's where you mimic their cry & they grow confused & sometimes stop crying.
    Also the villagers do it a lot. When the man vreaks his legs with the jump & he screams in agony they all start screaming with him. In the end when the fire is happening they start crying & screaming when the people in there start. It's like a form of unity for them.
    I know it's supposed to be weird & unsettling but it kind of calmed me. In my culture elders used to do a similar thing during funerals. When someone is grieving & starts crying a lot of them immediately go to them & start crying hard too. Soon a group of women are crying hard in front of a body. It shows unity & compassion. We don't do it much anymore but once in a while I still see the older women doing it. The younger generation not so much. I never did it but when my mother died I was surrounded by crying elders & it was comforting for me at least.

      the moment when all the women cried with dani was my favourite part of the movie for this exact reason! it honestly feels so comforting? like instead of trying to convince her she's fine (aka christian's go-to method), they feel the grief and pain with her and support her in that way. a super powerful moment tbh.

    I mean first off, Marc mentions Stockholm like three times. The four main cast were essentially taken hostage by pelle, much like the four hostages that were taken by the bank robbers in the Stockholm case.

    Finally a review of this movie that talks about the runes!
    Their meanings can change a little between the cultures, but according to the old futhark:
    -The rune that is "R" shaped is named Raidho, it was the rune about travel and the transformation that comes from this travel.
    -The rune that is hourglass-shaped is named Dagaz, which was the rune about dawn, the day and deep changes, in a good way.
    About the shape of the table, they are actually different each time. The one you point is named Othila, the rune of the family and it is the last rune. This rune is there because it is the last meal that those two old ones are eating.
    Another shape of the table was an "I" shaped, that was the rune Isa, Is or Ice and it's meaning was "stop", as "you need to take a pause and ponder", and that is the last dinner we watch in the movie.
    Every rune has more than just one meaning, so I'm just saying my interpretations.

    • @ashtenchambliss284
      @ashtenchambliss284 3 года назад +3

      Isa also symbolizes self-preservation, and isolation from the "outside world." I think it's supposed to show Dani going all the way inward, totally withdrawing from outside (non-cult) attachments and assimilating with these people who've sucked her in. She chooses to sacrifice Christian a couple scenes later.

    • @ashtenchambliss284
      @ashtenchambliss284 3 года назад +1

      It also sets up Christian's ritual: they make a path of flowers directly from the Isa table to the barn to have sex. He's on a lotta drugs, confused, cut off from Dani emotionally and physically, and feels the urge to escape or turn inward. So he withdraws down the convenient path they pave for him, and just like that - Dani and Christian are isolated from each other.

  • @okidoll

  • @user-lb9xw4xf2q
    @user-lb9xw4xf2q Год назад +46

    Pelle was grooming Dani for the ritual. While she is granted the “choice” to sacrifice Christian, the whole group had been drugged and manipulated by the cult for every step. Except for the pissing on the ancestral tree part, but I suspect the group was doomed for the start.
    Also, I think Pelle mentions his parents died in a fire, which makes me think that they were previous sacrifices like the scarecrow people this time.

    Next, when Dani visits the guys and says she might join the trip, she can be seen in the mirror above the sofa. I think this represents her alienation from Christian and the squad.

Then later in the scene Christian looks over at it and stares for a long while, and Dani has to snap him out of it.

      Reflections in this movie seem to symbolize things not being as they seem in my opinion.
      Christian claims he just decided about Sweden but that was not true and their relationship is not what Dani thinks it is.
      Pelle talking to Dani about going to Sweden and you see her reflection.
      Dani seeing her sister in the mirror while tripping.
      Josh seeing who he thinks is Mark sneaking up on him only to discover it is Ulf.
      You also have the upside down mirror effects after they arrive in Sweden and are driving that this trip is not what it seems.

The camera then lingers on the pies in a weird way, which made me think they were filled with their friends’ meat. Could be, since many of the bodies’ insides were replaced with hay at the ending scene. They do have cows and chickens though, so I could be wrong.

Yet the one specifically told not to feel pain is shown screaming in agony as the flames cover him, and the one told not to feel fear is shown panicking. ok two of the biggest theories I came with out of this movie from clues given throughout is:
    1. Pelle's parents were sacrificed in the ritual when he was a kid. He talks about being an orphan and even mentions his parents died in a fire. The trauma from watching his parents burn alive in this ritual most likely forced him into integrating into the community as he had no one left.
    2. This is kind of a long one to explain but it's one I can't stop thinking about and immediately wanted to discuss after leaving the movie. I don't think Dani's sister committed suicide and killed her parents, I think someone killed Dani's sister and parents and framed the sister. Even when Dani is talking on the phone about the email from her sister she says "It doesn't sound like her, even Christen thought so" Also having family members and friends who have bipolar disorder and other mental illnesses,, this is a really bizarre way to go out. I feel like most people with bipolar in a psychotic break would not do something so detailed and planned out, they would do something rash and quick. I think Pelle or someone in the cult may have known about Dani's sister's mental illness and knew they could frame her. Pelle knew Christen was going to break up with Dani soon (the deaths being the only thing that really kept them together), and even if he hadn't broken up with her Dani still may have not gone to Sweden because she would have had family to comfort her while her boyfriend was away for three weeks. I feel like there are more hints during the movie to indicate there was more to the murder suicide. Any thoughts?

And it seems weird to me that she would tape the tube to herself like that; if she wanted to die by carbon monoxide poisoning, she could've just stayed in the garage or sat in one of the cars. The tubing was only needed to get the poison to the parents' room, everything else was unnecessary. That entire scenario was premeditated, and the email dani got made it seem impulsive. It just doesn't fit. Plus I think that if she was far gone enough to want to take her parents with her that she would've also waited to take dani too. Like, I've been suicidal before AND I'm bipolar, and I wouldn't be able to take someone else with me and make it even more painful for my surviving family members. And I really hope that that isnt how my illness is gonna be represented lol

      Pelle's parents were not killed in sacrifice as that only happens every 90 years. I do have my own theories about Pelle killing the family the flowers surrounding Dani's picture in the parents room being the biggest indicator that something is afoot. He also never bad mouths her to Christian like Josh and Mark and genuinely seems excited that she's joining them. The artwork in the opening also has a skeleton(wearing boots) that detaches itself from Dani which I feel like indicates something Pelle? Chrtistian? who knows. I theorized that it's Pelle, who was her brother thought to have been killed, and he's attempting to breed another oracle. In the final scene Pelle's dubbed unclouded like the current oracle is said to be, however he's sitting off to the side in what appears to be a big puffy cloud. But then there's the circumstances of Christian and Majs's kid was she his sister?

I thought the buildings are meant to be un-Swedish in design, since even though the village is located in Sweden the villagers and customs are completely disconnected from modern Sweden. And the singing, I presume, would be meant to be derived from some ancient custom and language predating modern Swedish. Sort of like the Middle English of Beowulf sounds nothing like modern English, because languages evolve over time.

    Eldar Futhark is the runes seen in the movie. Menstrual blood and Pubic hair are mixed in as a spell to make Christian fall in love and it is actually the process on the comic as well. As for on the feast table that is called a Goddess Fertility cake and is probably containing the above mentioned ingredients as well as a few other unsavory items. Some of the Sacrifices had branches coming out and at angles looked like antlers. This would represent the horned god Ceranus. The entire movie is a dark ritual as each event is needed to facilitate the next. This isn’t openly practiced anymore but while the movie gave a cult twist ceremonies like this were common in many civilizations as the dude opposite of Christian doing his thesis states to the cult elder and was promptly ignored. Also the girls around the pole form a spiral not a circle ⭕️ this is an occult symbol also

It seemed like he chose the group of guys he did because he thought they would made good sacrifices since they were selfish and foolish, so the core guys were the "pre-chosen" that the cult mentions at the end. But since Dani was coming, Pelle had to make it work since he couldn't sacrifice her- she wasn't the chosen and he cared about her trauma. He almost seemed relieved after he processed the idea that she was coming along like an "aha" moment. I think he realized since he couldn't sacrifice her, she also couldn't go out in the real world after the festival to tell everyone what happened either; he had to make her join the cult somehow. Then he probably notified the elders before they got there about the change in plans.
