The new adaptation of Pet Sematary may have made a lot of strange choices, but it also had some interesting Things You Missed. It takes a lot of inspiration from the original 1989 film , as well as referencing some lesser known details. In this video, I'll be doing a breakdown of the 38 Things You Missed In Pet Sematary (2019).
There are connections to Pet Sematary, Pet Sematary II, The Shining, IT, Graveyard Shift, Cujo and even Carrie. We'll also discuss the meaning of Oz The Great and Terrible (Oz The Gweat and Tewwible), the spiral, the sendigo, the Mic Mac burial grounds, Zelda and the creepy animal masks.
I'll analyse some of the difference between this film, the previous two movies and the original novel and why they might have been changed, including the mentions of Norma Crandall and The Wendigo. I'll also explain some of the symbols and imagery seen throughout the film. Additionally, I'll talk about the backstories behind some of the characters and events that were absent or not fully mentioned in the movie. Finally, there will be a breakdown of the evil entities such as Church the Cat, the zombies, the Wendigo and Ludlow itself.

About Pet Sematary
Sometimes dead is better. Watch the final trailer for #PetSematary, in theatres starting Thursday night.
Based on the seminal horror novel by Stephen King, Pet Sematary follows Dr. Louis Creed (Jason Clarke), who, after relocating with his wife Rachel (Amy Seimetz) and their two young children from Boston to rural Maine, discovers a mysterious burial ground hidden deep in the woods near the family’s new home. When tragedy strikes, Louis turns to his unusual neighbor, Jud Crandall, setting off a perilous chain reaction that unleashes an unfathomable evil with horrific consequences.

You may see random frames flashing on screen during the video. This is a RUclips glitch. RUclips told me they would reprocess the video, but it could take several hours or days. I figured you'd want to see the video right away, so I've released it before the issues are fixed. So if you're early and you see glitches, now you know why. A butterfly is also a creature that gets "changed" to something different
Yes! Love this idea.
Love this channel
Butterflies are commonly used as symbols of rebirth/resurrection
The butterfly doesn't get changed. The caterpillar does. But I get what you're saying. It is symbolic of change. I'm just being smart.
Actually the wendigo is in the new one. When he goes to burry his daughter you see it jn the trees in the distance and then it fades away. It was a really nice touch. :) I just saw the movie today. I enjoyed everything until the ending. The end to me felt...rushed? Slapped on. It didn't seem to carry the same atmosphere as the rest of the film did. But I really liked the movie overall
EiriYukisLover I said the same thing about the ending !
should have just stuck with "bad Indians" who hated Wendy's
Yeah I was hoping they would show him and I started getting super hyped when I saw it. Also yes the movie was good but then soured by that ending. I thought we were going to get something cool one Ellie started acting like a creature while being choked.
@@ImaNecron ?I was hoping for some great quotes and kick ass scenes but it was average and nearly the definition of a remake, though Ellie in place of Gage as the families first human fatality and antagonist was better. Other than The Mist it's been a disappointing run lately for Stephen King movies,he had fun and interesting movies back in the 80's. and early 90's
To be fair, that's how I felt about the ending to the book lol. So much set up, and then Gage kills a couple people, but is easily put down. I thought there'd be more mind games and a higher body count (like the original The Omen), especially considering it's a king book
The Derry sign was the first thing i noticed
Same, I get the feeling traffic was so bad has to do with what happens in IT Chapter 2.
@@Cwhirt910 that would make a lot sense
Same
Same
Same. I saw the Derry sign right in counter of my eye.
My fav part of the movie is when the kids in the animal masks are never seen again or explained.
Yeah wasn't that a "lovely" surprise.
It's so fucking stupid. This whole movie. I just got back from the theater and I haven't been this disappointed in a film in a very very long time.
They were explained. They were burying a pet. Another pet didn't die during the movie.
@@dave2132 Yeah, they even say "it's a ritual" lol
So I guess "it became a ritual" isn't explanation enough? And why would we see them again? They berried their pets and that was suppose to be it. The movie was not about them so focusing on would be pointless. Plus who's to say the kids that went trick or treating with Ellie and were at her party were not some of the same kids.
I felt the film was missing the flashba ks of Timmy Baterman. It was not only creepy, but gave context as to why not to bury a person up there because it will come back evil.
That was one mark against this film, it could have been a big red flag/foreshadow.
Although the flashback isn't included, there is some subtlety to it, because he is included in the film. When Louis is doing research after Church's resurrection there's a newspaper clipping discussing the event. It's not as blatant, but it is some foreshadowing.
I wish they not only included it, but had Timmy reveal the men's secrets when they went to kill him again
@@jonathanjones8738
Yup. I agree.
Totally agree, that was an important piece of the context. Big mistake
I thought it was ironic when Louis didn’t believe in God, but in the end he was stabbed through the heart with a cross from someone’s grave.
Oh thanks alot.. You just spoiled the movie for me.. 😂😂😂Jk.. Not going to see it anyway. Im sticking with the original. Saw the trailers and that was enough..But that is pretty good message there, isnt it.. Lol
@@mpatrickthomas The 2 trailers did literally spoil 99% of the movie. The *only* thing they didn't spoil was the ending
@@mpatrickthomas Good message? What do you mean?
Well thanx lol, I was gonna watch to see how it goes, but yeah,..kinda of a spoiler but the original deaths is more emotional that 2nd
when Rachel sees blood coming from the part behind the mirror- that she's seeing as the thing she sent Zelda's food up in- it reminded me of the scene in The Shining where Danny sees blood gushing out of the elevator! unsure if it was intentional, but interesting
Yes!!! I thought the same thing!
In the original version of the film Judd was played by Fred Gwynne. He played Herman Munster and his pet in the Munsters series was named Spot.
Yep. Loved the MUNSTERS
The ghosts are from the book..the buddinger twins
Yes!!! That’s exactly who the ghosts were. Good catch!
Wait Buddinger? This was the name of the historian in the IT novel! I have seen the Pet Sematary movie but I haven't read the book yet so don't know much about that...
So.. what happens to the “re-animated” Creed Family next? Do they just hang out in their new house. Do they know how to pay bills? Just a thought;)
Right?? Lol
They probably tormented the town before being killed in a police raid for multiple homicides.
HicksZ34 where can I find that alternate ending?
@@whereami4025 on RUclips
The main cat who played as Church was an amazing actor! I was so sad when I heard the sweet baby boy passed away shortly after the film's release. We love you, Leo ❤

I wonder why both films decided not to show the wendingo kinda a bummer was hoping we actually get to see the wendingo in this adaptation
Yeah, if you're gonna remake it, do something the other one didn't!
@@CZsWorld couldn't have said it better also i feel some of the changes in this film aren't good at all i could deal with them changing the deaths but why add the cliche of creepy little kids in masks when it doesn't even appear in the book
anyways keep up the good content
I think they were trying to emulate the success of The Shining, which added the twins, the elevator of blood and "all work and no play". The problem is, the mask kids didn't really add anything to the story.
@@CZsWorld makes sense
In the background Spongebob is playing. It is the episode where Spongebob and Patrick believe that they have killed Squidward and that he returned from the dead as an angry spirit. When the parents are telling Ellie that Church 'Ran away' Church comes in through the window and knocks over one off the wooden letters spelling Ellies name near the window leaving E Lie, the Lie part for the lie they told Ellie.
Just got back from seeing the movie. I believe I saw the Windego in the trees. Both me and my husband pointed it out so we did see it. It's kind of hard to notice because it blends in well with the trees
Definitely saw it too. The antlers move pretty clearly.
@@TeenoGames😊😊
I went and saw the movie last night. And I do agree with you about the ending. Speaking from a parent POV ((I've got two kids of my own.)) That was really fucked up. In my opinion, Gage should've been left back at his grandparent's house. Yeah, I get Rachel was worried and might've felt like leaving him there would've been a bit strenuous on her parents. However, if she honestly felt like something terrible was about to happen, dragging a toddler with you is just a bad idea all around.
Now speaking from a fellow horror lover this is all I have to say: "This is how our zombie overlords started?! Damn Wendigo!"
Wolfs Bane
But then endead Rachel, Ellie and Louis would have gone to that house and murdered everyone.
Pancake Productions lol, really? You think they would’ve (or could’ve) travelled from Maine to Chicago, a family of undead rotting corpses, to find Gage and kill him?? Slow and stupid and mean corpses? Sorry but just picturing this is making me laugh my ass off. They wouldn’t have made it out of Ludlow, the towns people would’ve taken care of them.
I know, I said the same thing, yeh a damn wendigo, tf really?. Omg man that's just I dont even know man,
Actually zombies were inspired from Haiti and voodoo
"Let God take his own kid..."
Well, He did lmao.
That's all i could think about when I heard him say it.
Spoiler for the ending and a little easter egg:
Rachel stabbed Louis at the end with a cross, I thought it's maybe related to the misery book (another Stephen King novel) where Annie Wilkes stabs a police officer with a cross of her dead cow
I think it was a reference to the beginning when he said he doesn't believe in God
Two years too late...but could also call attention to maybe...loosely...Salem' s Lot. Another Stephen King novel.
That " Wendigo call" you mention is just a Loon call dude.
Accurate
Blame Canada. Love your content dude 👍
Just realized your profile is from The Life Aquatic!
That did actually sound somewhat like an elk call, which is a stag like the wendigo
Steve Zissou It’s actually the Wendigo. In the book it mentions how he says it a loon out of denial
My mum named me Gage because of the original... Had a blast hearing ya say my name so many times hehe
Must have been exhilarating.
Did you used to say no fair no fair 😂
Lmao!
I did the same with my son
Best part of pet sematary remake is the cat
Halloween Heroes truth. That cat carried the whole film!
It needed to be put down but it was too damn cute 😩😂
Yeah, I loved that cat, it was cute even as a zombie. :)
Agreed!!
Halloween Heroes The CAT actually DIED a few weeks ago...... creepy as HELL !! The Cat playing " bad Church" REALLY passed away a few weeks ago !!
Elaborating on the butterflies... when Ellie comes back and is laying in bed talking to her father, there are butterfly shadows passing by on the wall from her lamp.
Also, the fire from Jud’s house may have triggered the Fire department to be called saving Gage.
This film felt like it was oddly messing with people who saw the original film.
"Oh, here's the scene where the truck kills Gage... just kidding, it's going to kill Ellie instead"
"Here's the part where the child cut's Jud's ankles from under the bed. Nah, we're not doing that, she does it on the stairs instead".
I am so glad that CZ is a fellow Stephen King fan, who has actually read his books. I think it adds a much deeper understanding of the movies he reviews.
Yea to reading!!!
I must have low standards. I loved the movie. Thanks for this video. I'm watching it on my way home. I'm proud I caught that Cujo reference, I thought I heard that while watching the movie!
I liked the movie too, I wasn't expecting much considering the original wasn't to good.
From what I’ve been reading, what he didn’t like was how rushed the movie could be, and how they didn’t set up character relationships the best. It didn’t bother me personally, but what do I know? Regardless, happy I’m not the only one who enjoyed it
@@saljpal3 the original was great. Boy, do you have terrible taste😒
I loved it too
Yeah, I don’t know why a lot of people are complaining about it. It’s definitely an improvement from the older version of the movie (I still loved that one though).
Another fun Easter egg is in the beginning! You can see Ellie watching spongebob and soon she would leave the house. The spongebob episode is all about how “squidward dies” and how he is now a ghost or a zombie. Perfect episode choice😂
I think there might be a Cujo reference in the book?
Jud talks about a Saint Bernard that went rabid and killed 6 people
I'm not for sure, but it would be really cool if it was!
Yes that's it
Don't know why these films always cut out the scariest part of the book: the walk through the forest. The crazy laughter, hallucinations, voices, Wendigo knocking trees down, and unknown thing that tries to follow Louis to the deadfall after he buries Gage.
The Wendigo can be clearly seen when he stops at the lake, but many people did miss it but it was there looking like a selketon body with a hunched back and head of dear like a famous drawing of it.
Ike Studios yea i saw it clearly. I was shook.
I’ve been trying to find this scene so I can see it again, but I did clearly see it during the movie and no one else is pointing it out.
I didn’t see it 😕

@@hookjock copy of what?
Found it funny how Louis tried to kill Church the same way he does in the novel and original film. As well as Rachel stabbing Louis through the back, similar to in the 1989 film. Plus, Gage almost getting ran over (but saved) and how before Louis attempts to kill Church and Ellie, they both try to look convincing towards Louis to not get killed. And the Wendigo does appear before Louis buries Ellie at the burial ground. Ellie even taunts Jud by talking and turning into Norma, somewhat similar to Gage in the novel.
I love the part in the book where Ellie is like "Let god take his own damn cat!"
12:24 It would be better if he heard "Hey-Ho let's go", because louis thinks about the song a lot.
There were 2 other nods to King movies I think were missed. When Ellie is killed by the gas truck it was similar to the way Christopher Walken's character is hit and seriously hurt in The Dead Zone. Also, when Rachel is reliving the dumb waiter incident a stream of blood shoots out of it much like the blood streaming out of the elevator in The Shining.
11:10 I took Gage's drawing not to be of a monster, but of post accident Pascow.
Oh my god I didn't pick up on that!
Yes! That's EXACTLY what that was! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
That's exactly what I was going to say! Was scrolling through the comments to see if anyone else noticed.😺
Herbert von Zinderneuf same
Wendigo is definitely shown in the trees, Louis turns and looks at him. He then fades into the trees, and Louis continues on the way to the burial ground.
Who here thinks CZ is precious the way he said Gweat and Tewwible??? I can't be the only one.
Was a little disappointed that they showed a sign to Derry in the movie but not Jerusalem’s Lot which Rachel passed on her way back to Ludlow in the book. But, Derry is clearly much better known among moviegoers so I see why they did that. I’m also happy to see other people commenting on the subtle shine that Ellie had in the book and Gage does in the 2019 movie
Thanks to your videos about the old Pet Semetary movie, I was able to understand and getting excited from all the part that the book talked and they were showing for the first on the screen like the wendigo and damn how i missed the Cujo easter egg and i knew there was going to be one of him
Also I’m pretty sure you get a dark shadow visual of the wendigo when Louis goes to bury Ellie
I thought I saw it when Jud looks up and notices “something” right before he changes his mind and takes Louis to the burial ground. It looks like a figure barely can be seen as he looks up
yeah it was the wendigo.
Isaw it
:06 I enjoy every episode on this channel. Even when I have no intention of seeing the movie.

Love this channel, you do really great work here :)
I love how you're digging into this movie and finding things we missed, the symbolism and foreshadowing leading up to the big events in this film is genius.
As it turns out, they were trying in part to avoid parallels with other movies that have featured killer kids - and dolls. Widmyer said
Then he literally picked the wrong film to remake lol.
You are wrong about the Zelda dress! It is not the same as the one the Shinning twins wore. It is dark turquoise with butterfly trim.
Similar enough
I love your videos so far; when the new pet Sematary comes out on DVD or digital download, I’m going to have to see if I can catch some of the things that you mentioned.
One other thing I will mention I liked was the visuals of the movie. Having Elly and Church have the half stroke look was a great idea, especially considering how they died. There was also a great amount of subtle makeup choices that really sold the off nature of those who have come back.
8:30 it is called a spirit circle it is cursed or blessed to keep life going even after death
If they were going to kill Gage in the end anyways then why didn't they kill him like in the OTHER Pet Sematary
THANK U SO MUCH FOR ALL THE BRILLIANT CHANNEL MAKING HORROR MORE FUN LOVE THE EASTER EGGS U SHOW OUT .
thank you asked you about this the other day, I am watching before I see cause I'm kinda of addicted to your videos, I'm seeing someone about it... but besides that, also I want to be on the lookout the 1st watch I did see the original as a kid and zelda still haunts my dreams is she as terrifying as she was at least? Keep up the great work.
The wendigo appears in the film for a very short while in the background
there was a scene when Elle was watching an episode of Spongebob. The episode was about how Squidward pretended to be a ghost after Spongebob and Patrick believed he was dead and came back to life. A hint to what sorta happens later in the movie or just me?
Ohhhhhhh,interesting
I also commented on how Spongebob is a children’s show, and in some cases could be a first introduction to death, something that both Rachel and Louis are conflicted about discussing with Ellie. But I also mentioned how Spongebob and Patrick think Squidward is dead, but then obviously at the end does come “back to life” as a symbol of what is to come of Church and Ellie (who ironically is the one watching the cartoon)
Great breakdown, thank you! Have you seen Castle Rock? Would love to see one of these breakdowns for that show!
Good job on this video
CZ out there throwing shade lol love it
It deserves shade. The movie is just plain bad.
I really disliked the ending, it turned into a zombie apocalypse movie and the "real" terror of death and grieving was somewhat erased.
.
Yup... sounds about right.
Not zombies but wendigo possessed dead bodies
Yup i agree. Didn't like the ending and I didn't like how it doesnt show what happens to Gage just ends abruptly.. So it just leaves us to guess what happened.. Even though its obvious Gage probably died, but I agree it might as well been a zombie family movie lmao
wtb two others endings?
@@cuckerinokripperino4216 Yup. Not zombies in the slightest. Much in the vein of Kandaarian demon possessed deadites ;)
Informative!
This was a cool list!
Another thing I noticed is that the truck driver who hits Ellie is typing "Christine" into his phone, referencing the movie + book of the same name.
I personally loved the movie, changes and all. The original had things that could be improved (mainly the acting for me) and I think this delivered. Ellie being the one to die worked since we got more development of her making it more tragic.
Saw it last night. I will say it is really fast paced, to me at least. But I did enjoy it and want to have a second viewing in theaters.
My question to you is how early do you get access to see screenings? I’m sure this video alone took time to put together, shoot and edit all in more than just one day, so I was just curious as to when you might’ve seen it.
LMAAOOOO BRO your jokes are amazing I loved the Shane dawson joke so much
Also, Pet Sematary by the Ramones wasn’t a reference to the song stuck in Louis’s head as much as it was done for Stephen King. (It’s one of his favorite bands.) For the ending, I like the book where Gage is killed, and he buries his wife believing it would be different. It leaves an open end much like other Stephen King novels such as IT, The Dark Tower, and The Mist.
Wow I haven't read the book yet so I didn't know that the Wendigo played such a huge part in it, but I do remember that I also saw it in the forest among the trees and the sound they heard when walking to the graveyard was definitely it. :) This is cool. :)
7:38 te kids dressed as ghosts were in the book when jud's wife died
I cant figure out if Victor is supposed to help the Creeds or the Windego. He was warning the family most of the movie just like he always does. When Gage and Rachel were being told to go home, Luis already buried Ellie looking like he was trying to get Gage and Rachel killed.
wow awesome one here man
the ending could have been better but overall it was a great remake imo
Yes call from Sheena! I picked up on the Easter egg right away!!! 🤗
Omg CZ that was awful but halarious. That Shane dawson joke is just cold man. I ❤ you so much though.
Nothing cold about making jokes about an e-celeb who talked about busting a nut on his cat. Was a clever use of the subject matter 😂😂
3:56 in this scene, too, Ellie’s night light projector thing are butterflies too hehe
can we just have CZ saying the phrase 'the gweat and tweible' just over and over again XD
I didn't get the notification but... I knew it was out anyway so I came over to watch it
RUclips is just being as broken as possible today.
I thought this was a solid horror film. The scares were legit. And it does stayed “kinda” true to the book
No, it was god awful. All the way through, awful. From the start. Kids in animal masks walking through the woods, just arbitrarily to bury a pet? That's so fucking stupid. The whole movie is fucking stupid.
@@newvocabulary I haven't watched the new film yet but I had a theory that the new kids with masks thing was gonna be because they are under the Wendigo's influence similar to Judd.. At least I thought that's what they were gonna do. Missed opportunity
J.E.M.'z The way I took it was that they were an illusion created by the Wendigo to draw Ellie in.
I actually liked the ending. It even leaves room for a cool new story about the "dead" family.
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS
LOVE THE WAY YOU PRESENT
LOVE YOUR PASSION
YOU. ARE. AWESOME
Maybe the butterfly shirt shows that if you look, they are not the same on both sides and because the wings aren’t actually the same it just looks it on the outside. This could reference the fact that the animals brought back look like the normal alive ones but are different on the inside.
Me and my dad noticed the Derry sign when we first saw it today.
I love your topic
Thank you I think?
Ok, great video so far. But two things. In the beginning, the sound you hear is the cry of a Loon, also, the picture that Gage drew is of Pascow.
So someone had balls enuf 2 bring a bull back from the dead? I can only imagine what that had 2 been like.......🤔😭😵😡
Dec. gyrrl not hard, it’s suggested the wendigo itself helped him do it which means it probably brought the bull there and/or cleared the path so it was a straight line walk to the sematary even when dragging the bull
How the fuck did they drag a bull to the middle of the woods over a dam?
Omg,yes
@@saljpal3 Bingo! I was wondering about this very thing when I watched the shitty reboot as well!
My favorite Stephen King books are It and Pet Cemetery/Semetery
I just watched it. I think the ending was really strong honestly a lot darker than in the books and the old movie. However it was missing a lot of important details like Timmy and explaining more about the addictiveness of the burial ground. It did feel pretty rushed but I still enjoyed it
I just saw this tonight And I actully really enjoyed myself
I loved the references, but hated the changes. I really hope this does set up a SKCU.
My mother: **walking out of the theater and across the street after seeing pet sematary with me**
Me: **almost gets hit by a car**
Mom: that wouldn't happen if you had stayed with me
Me: god mom do you WANT me to end up like Ellie?
And on our way home we almost hit a cat with our car
In the beginning of the remake , you see the car door open , a blood trail and a small bloody handprint on the doorframe of the house, indicating that Gage was killed as well.
I’m not sure if someone else has already mentioned this but the picture Gage drew was of Pascow, not a monster. He had already been seeing him before Elli dies.
I liked the movie. It could have done better but Im not hating it.
I noticed the sign labeled “Derry” and I was like WHOA!
The emerald city or at least an emerald castle also appears in Kings Dark Tower series, which overall as well has a lot of Wizard of Oz references.
Cool stuff😃
The wendigo is actually in the new version you just have to look closely. I literally just got out of seeing the movie.
Wow no Timmy that sucks
I know this video was done 5 years ago but I just watched it as I’m pretty new to the channel. Can you do a things you missed on Pet Sematery Bloodlines?
I think this was pretty good actually
In the trailer video, you mentioned "A more graphic depiction of 'The Scene'," what scene were you referring to?
In his review of the original movie, he said he calls Gage's death "The Scene" :)
Cool. Thanks for the reply.
Just got back from the premier :)
The spiral is also a very common image used in many tribes to signify spirits, origin/roots of a place or group of people, and connections between the spiritual world and physical world, especially nature. At least, from what i remember that was explained to me last year.
Hey CZ! I love you're vids, WHY can't we see the wendigo?! in one of the Pet Semataries? Also looking forward to seeing the Things you missed for Annabelle 3. You going to do a vid for The Curse of La Llorona?
They did show it though? Its tall and hard to see, kind of like spotting Slenderman in artwork. I only knew I saw it once it wasnt there anymore.
@@Mizunokage1 Oh yeah? Cool I haven't seen it at least yet sounded like the wendigo wasn't shown so if it was briefly that's cool and you caught something CZ had missed
