  • Sometimes dead is better...but sometimes Hollywood won't let a classic lay in rest. The latest Stephen King classic to be given the modern Hollywood greenlight is Pet Sematary. The 1989 film is not only my favorite Stephen King adaptation but it''s one of my favorite horror films of all time. Does this modern retelling deliver the scares or am I left with grief and mourning for what could have been?

No actor could have topped Dale Midkiff falling down and screaming over Gage. I'm not sure they could have found an actor to touch that performance. That shit turned my blood cold.

CatrinaDollsAndSugarSkulls yes!! That movie really got the emotion and the horror of loss right! Even as I kid that hit me hard . Then when he saw racheal when she came back and he literally looked like he couldn’t see anything wrong with her , like half her damn head wasn’t bleeding. His performance was pretty damn good when it came to that big stuff

CatrinaDollsAndSugarSkulls right? I think that scene gets harder to watch as I have gotten older because I have had nieces gages age and I think about them that little when I watch it and when he screams, “ noooooooo! OMG! You can feel his grief. That was real! My nieces are older now, but still… I think about them that young and how tragic that event would be.

It was a huge omission for the simple fact that it was important to have that in there because that was the warning for Lewis not to bury anything human in that burial ground. I have heard rumblings that there may be a prequel? So maybe we actually see that story play out.

    Spoilers
Pascow's actions in the first film was largely an invention for that version. Loius thinks a lot about the guys death and he dwells on the dream but the helpful part of Pascow really wasn't in the novel. Actually, the novel's ending was not so much rushed but it was a smaller part of the story than I remembered it when I listened to the audiobook recently.
I have my tickets to tomorrow so hopefully I like it. As for other King remakes, how about a better version of the Gunslinger Series that actually focussed on the stories of the individual novels and I hope the Stand works out.

I love John Lithgow, but Fred Gwynne just brought such a human reality to that part. You felt scared and nervous because he felt scared and nervous. You believed him. Gwynne was meant for that role. So I completely agree with you. The original dad was OK and I never loved Denise Crosby as the mom. Gauge was perfect though, even the daughter was almost perfect in the original. It is to bad to hear that this is not " IT ". But then again different writers, different director. I will see it even though it may not live up to the original. Thanks for another great and honest review. Love your channel.

the religious views happened in the old one and was much more emotional. The missed the mark for me, it went way to mainstream a fell far off the source material. The scenes seemed rushed and forced dialog, conversations happened for no reason for the sake of just trying to explain things as if the movie was trying to explain things for blind people. the original is still the best as far as material and acting. Like you said the original hit the mark on the emotional level , everytime I hear the father yell when gage dies sends chills through me everytime.

17:23 I don't get why studios think jumpscares actually scare people. They don't. People's reaction to them is quick shock because they don't expect them not fear. In films it gets more and more obvious when a jumpscare's coming anyway usually when there's an entire scene that's completely silent with no music.

I've been noticing that people who love the original and think it is a classic horror masterpiece are tending to not like this movie very much. On the opposite end, people who don't have strong feelings towards the original seem to be enjoying it for the most part (this is the camp I'm in). I agree with a few of your negatives though, particularly regarding Zelda. It seemed like her primary purpose was to act as a vehicle for half of the movie's jump scares, and they could have done more with her.

Completely agree with it all but especially that the first and 3rd act are the most important thing to making a movie. The 1st act grips us and the 3rd act leaves us talking. The 2nd act you shouldn't mess up but can and you will still have an affective movie as long as you don't mess up the 1st and 3rd acts. Which they did here. They done goofed.

Zelda and Patscow were completely mishandled. Almost feeling generic. The atmosphere was there but it didn't have nowhere near as much creepy or unnerving as the original was. Like just some typical modern day horror movie. The original was so good at being it's own thing it didn't feel like anything we've seen before. That ending...where I didn't hate it, it was definitely the most disappointing part about this movie. We watch her dance for her parents, we hear ler talk and we see her smile. She feels like our little sister and then bam, she’s gone. I just feel like it was more effective than Gage since he didn’t do much in either film. The true horror of the book is the grief and soul shattering thoughts that pass through one's mind when a tragedy of that magnitude occurs. Also the characters were very bland, and they completely missed the mark on the entire point of Jud, and Louis's relationship. They made changes to the source material which is totally fine with me, but the changes they made made the story much weaker in comparison to the original film/novel. The acting might have been bad in the first movie but the themes were much more powerful in comparison to this new adaptation. In my humble opinion of course. ;)

@@stonegasman3866 Your completely wrong, the whole reason of adaptation is to bring on screen. If you actually believe the filmmaker doesn't owe the source material anything the he or she should do their own film instead then, your logic is completely flawed and partly why adaptation's fail alot times. Whether you like or not source material and adaptation will always be compared.
For years creators have even taken elements from the adaptations add to their ongoing source material. My point source material and adaptations are closely related you can't completely separate them. For example Batman grappler hook was featured first in Batman 1989 and was added in the comics later. If creators thought like you there would be no improvement.

Great review Cody.I think someone should do a movie version of King's "Duma Key".I love the original "Pet Sematary" for all the reasons you and Lee love it;so I'm interested to see if I will like this remake(like you someone spoiled the twist for me darn it;which is why I have reservations).

I understand the concept of making bold and different changes But, you are right the change they made and then told us before we see the film was not as impactful as it could have been. You mentioned everything was rushed. While I agree in some scenes, other scenes were dragged out so long without any pay off in my opinion. And what was with "the sound from the second floor " the entire movie? That became annoying for me.

I do want to see this film, I'm not dead set against it like I am with child's play. But I don't understand I'll people can say it's closer to the novel than the original with that huge change. But thing about these remixes when it comes to the Stephen King's you have to remember that it's a book as well you're not remaking the original film your trying to readapt the book. I honestly have very low expectations for this movie and have to wait you say about the acting they just got lower. I like John lithgow but I don't know if I put him in the greatest of all time category. A great review my brother as always, you kill it.

I haven’t watched the remake and had never watched the original until tonight. I watched it tonight because of you Cody.
I think the original is a good movie but typical of pre Misery adaptations of King’s work. The novel of Pet Sematary is FAR superior to the movie. That’s always an issue if you read the source material.
Up until Misery I always felt that King’s work was represented disappointingly in the movie adaptations. I LOVE Carpenter but Christine comes across as silly to me.
Carrie was good for me. I think The Shining is fantastic but Kubrick was a master that just used King’s novel as an outline and made the movie his own vision.
I like the original Pet Sematary movie but I think that it’s a bit flat filming wise m, almost like a TV movie. The performances are pretty good but it lacks atmosphere for me.
This isn’t to criticise how people like yourself and other fans view the movie. I’m just looking at it from a different point of view. I’m a reader of the novel. So I’m viewing it and comparing it to the novel which is different to how you view it.
Misery wasn’t as good as the novel to me but it was a GREAT movie adaptation in my opinion. They got the tone right and it was one of his better novels to adapt. It was a horror in a psychological and realistic sense.
Christine for example reads well as a novel but comes across as silly on the screen for me personally without an explanation for why a car murders people. For me it would have worked better as a comedy satire. Not a Carpenter classic for me personally.
The Shawshank Redemption was amazing because it was a movie based on a short story and there were so many gaps to fill. I think the new IT is better than the original. King’s movie adaptations from Misery onwards have been far more consistent.
Loving your channel from the UK. Keep up the good work 👊🏻

With remakes i feel like you have to tread a very fine line, because if you change too many aspects of the original story, especially crucial elements, then you risk losing a large portion of your audience, and that's exactly what happened with this particular remake. Quite frankly, they blew it.

I just watched the remake bc the original is in my top 5 favorites. Finally I told myself to stop being a snob about it and just enjoy the ride and nostalgia. As a stand alone, I did enjoy it. I was really excited about the main twist but then disappointed bc they didn't take advantage. I know this will be my most unpopular opinion but I thought the ending was great. They made it their own while paying homage to the original by leaving on a cliffhanger

  • @DesmondsFlicks

Really good review, Cody. I do have to respectfully disagree. I wouldn't call this film a remake, but rather a new adaptation of the source material. I feel that the 1989 adaptation is very dated, doesn't give me that sense of dread, and the acting is incredibly cheesy. Mind you, I grew up watching the movie as a kid as well, and it scared me then, but does nothing for me now. With this film, although flawed, has a much better tone throughout. The acting is also hugely improved as well as the pacing. There seems to be a lot of folks looking at the 1989 adaption with rose colored glasses.
