    1. The shining- Main reason Jack Nicholson is my favorite actor and thought the guy deserved an Oscar nomination for his part and i loved the creepy hotel as a setting.
    2. Misery- I love this one almost as much as the shining. Very impressive that Kathy Bates won an Oscar for the movie as she should of. I really love this movie too because most of the film takes place in her house. I read the book and one thing that was different was the sheriff and his wife was not in the book and i love how the movie added that. I love the movie because it seems like something that could actually happen. The only question i have is who was gonna take care of misery the pig?
3- Carrie- I love Carrie because for Stephen Kings first it's great. I thought Sissy Spececk did a great job but the scene stealer was Piper Laurie as the psychotic mother. Plus it was cool seeing a young John Travolta.
    4. Creepshow- I've never watched a anthology movie where I loved all the stories. Although my favorite story was "The Create". I don't know who was crazier the monster or Billie. George Romero and Stephen King were a great team and wish they could've done more together. I understand that the effects are outdated but I think that's the charm about it. I loved seeing Stephen King, Ted Danson, Ed Harris, Tom Atkins and Tom Savini in the film as well. Also it was cool that Stephen Kings own son was in the prologue and epilogue of the film too.
    5. Christine- I loved what John Carpenter was able to do with this movie. I loved John Carpenter's soundtrack too. I always loved the look of the car too. Dennis was a really cool character, he was my favorite of the movie. It's a shame that John Stockwell didn't play in much after that. I also love all of the death scenes too. My favorite scene is when Christine killed the fat bully.
Hope these were good reasons, but these are my favorites and I'm sticking to them. Cool list Cody, I'm gonna have to watch
    "The Dead Zone".

Awesome choices (especially The Dead Zone). I'd also throw in: Cujo, Sometimes They Come Back (VERY underrated), The Langoliers, Salem's Lot, Creepshow, Silver Bullet, The Dark Half, Dolan's Cadillac, Children of the Corn, Graveyard Shift and 1408 and for guilty pleasures, I'd throw in Maximum Overdrive, The Mangler, Thinner, Cat's Eye, Creepshow 2 and Desperation.

I just love it when people talk about Stephen King because he's my favorite author, the guy who pretty much made me fall for horror. Your list is solid but here's mine:
    5. Pet Sematary 2019. I have no connection to the first adaptation so I watched it with fresh eyes and I really liked it. The ending is a bit rushed but I found it effective and it made me want to read the novel again.
    4. IT 2017. Opening scene is perfection, the cast is amazing and even though is not super scary (blame the cgi) it is unsettling and just an awesome ride.
    3. De Palma's Carrie. Come on, that movie is as perfect an adaptation as you can get. Mother is crazy scary and the third act is just awesome. There's a reason why it's classic.
    2. The Mist. Thomas Jane gives one of his greatest performances and the whole concept while crazy works so well. Some of the cgi feels dated, but still works because of the characters and atmosphere. The ending does not come from the novel but it is brilliant. My favorite ending to a horror movie ever.
    1. You talked about how Pet Sematary affects you, well, this one did a number on me: Gerald's Game. Carla Gugino carries the movie in a masterful way, the atmosphere is great, the couple of jumpscares that occur are real and effective as hell and the pinnacle of body horror for me happens in the Ungloving scene. I was shaking watching that scene. It really it got me, just thinking about it gives me goosebumps. My favorite King adaptation by far.
    Anyways, great video!

Thank you so much for talking about Christine in this list. You said that the movie had your favorite score of John Carpenter, and when I hear that a movie has a good score, I'm in. As soon as the video was over I went and watched Christine. Such an interesting film of Carpenter's. He literally put Michael Myers into car form, created another bad ass soundtrack (though it probably doesn't top Halloween for me), and oriented it all around a somewhat tragic story that is vaguely deep and relatable. Christine and Pet Sematary both represent what I love in horror movies, that deeper meaning, that symbolism of the hard parts of life, that's a horror masterpiece in my eyes.

    My list:
    1) Misery
    - Holy cow. What can I say? I love isolation movies done right! Kathy Bates is an amazing psychotic villain. She's manic, and sometimes has the pleasantness and goofiness of a child, but also, you know she's freaking smart! Even when you think you're hiding something from her, she already knows what you're up to. And Paul Sheldon! What a great character. He's a plain guy, yet so likable! One of the things I love about Paul is how smart his character is written. Most characters would be saying stupid stuff to Annie like, "You're crazy!" "You'll never get away with this!" "Someone will find me!" But not Paul. Paul picks up very early on that she's crazy so he plays it cool. He tries to appease her and make her happy. While behind her back, is doing everything he can to get out of there. He's smart enough to NOT antagonize his captor. And he's a character I can really root for! When you have a main character you can really like and root for, and an awesome villain, you've got a good movie automatically. I really like the songs they include, too. I love it when horror movies use songs that aren't meant to be scary. Liberace's I'll Be Seeing You somehow works so well.
    2) Christine
    - love the score! And the 50s era. I love how Carpenter was able to make 50s music creepy. And most of the time, when Christine played a song, it was in relation to what was going on. I laughed with pure delight when she started playing, "You keep a knockin' but you can't come in!" when Dennis was trying to break in. That was just too perfect. They do a good job of making Arnie someone you pity, but also making Dennis, "the jock," but also really likable.
    3) Cujo
    - we really have very few movies about killer dogs, at least that I know of. I like movies that can do a lot with a little and Cujo manages to do that for me!
    4) Stephen King's IT (1990 - yes, 1900, NOT the remake. lol.) Tim Curry as Pennywise. What more can I say? Plus, I think the characters are really likable for the most part. I'm probably one of the very few people who enjoys the adult half of the "movie" too!
    5) Pet Sematary (1989)
    - It's quite an impressive feat for a movie to make you MORE afraid/MORE disturbed as you get older. The reason Pet Sematary works so well is because even though we know what Lewis is doing is wrong, we can't help but wonder, "Would we be tempted to do the same were we in his place?"
Honorable mentions: Cat's Eye (awesome end credits song!) and Thinner

  • @KiramidHead
    @KiramidHead 5 лет назад +2

This is a tough one. Here goes:
    5) 1408: a very entertaining, creative haunted house (hotel room, but you get the idea) story
    4) The Shining: I love it, it really gets across the idea that the hotel is a living, breathing entity purely through editing, sound design, and cinematography.
    3) The Dead Zone: THE ICE! IS GONNA BREAK!
2)Christine: It just has that great Carpenter touch
    1) Creepshow: simply the best horror anthology film ever made
    Honorable mentions:
-1922 and Gerald's Game: both are on Netflix, check them out
-Carrie: the original is still very effective to me
-It 2017: I was going to put this on the list, but I'm waiting for the story to conclude in Chapter 2 before I say for sure
-The Night Flier: a unique vampire story
-Maximum Overdrive: stupid as hell but fun to watch
-The Mist: that ballsy ending, man

Misery is my absolute favorite! Kathy Bates is amazing, for sure, but I always felt James Caan's performance was brilliant as well. I love the way the character of Paul Sheldon is written, which is very intelligently. While he's trapped by Annie, he figures out that she's not quite right pretty early on so instead of antagonizing her, tries to keep her happy the best he can. Your bland, generic horror character would be saying dumb stuff, like "You're never gonna get away with this!" "My family will find me!" "You're crazy!" But Paul just plays along, trying to make her happy, while her eyes are on him.

Loved this video! You know, I have never seen the dead zone, but that is on my list of books to read and movies to see if I can find it. The Shining is one of my absolute favorite movies and it would be in my top five as well. I have also read the book several times which was very scary. All the scenes that you mentioned, Danny with the tricycle and how you hear the noise The tricycle as he is going to the hardwood to the carpet and seeing the twin girls… does it make it more scary that I am a twin? LOL! And then of course that ever famous, “Redrum. Quote I think that’s one of his scariest books as well as adaptations, although I cannot compare it to the miniseries. I know Stephen King didn’t care for this version of the shining, but it was one of my favorite movies of all time. When I first saw Christine, I think it was because I saw the TV version which cut out a lot of the good parts. LOL, but I hated it the first time I Sorret. Then I read the book and loved the book. After reading the book, I rewatched the movie and absolutely loved it!
Misery… That had better have been on the top five LOL! I think Annie Wilkes is the most disturbing psycho or at least one of them that I have ever seen. The hobbling scene? Oh my God! And then that last scene with the typewriter? Oh… That’s awesome! The acting in the movie primarily by Kathy Bates is just phenomenal. You’re number one is also I think my number one. I think as I get older, and having nieces of my own (don’t have kids), but picturing my nieces and that whole concept of dealing with what is talked about in the movie, as I get older, it gets scarier and more disturbing. Selda still scares the shit out of me, but when I was little, it was just a really awesome scary movie but as I have read the book and experienced grief of my own, then when my nieces were born, oh man! I just picture them at that certain scene at that age. The acting from everyone in that movie especially with Lewis and how he deals with grief and also the torment for Judd and Rachel,… Just wow! This is one of my go to movies and One of my favorite books as well.

Great list. Every single one of those movies are the shit. Here are some honorable mentions:
Carrie. A classic teenaged revenge fantasy. Gotta love Sissy Spacek. And even John Travolta played a good villain.
Cujo. Great movie. That whole predicament was just fucked up.
Maximum Overdrive. Semi trucks and every other machine on Earth on a killing spree? Forget about it.
Children of the Corn. "He wants you too, Malachi."
Needful Things. I loved the idea of the devil incarnate moving into town and slowly turning everyone against each other.
Thinner. What a curse. As a big man myself I can see how losing three pounds a day could seem like heaven...at first, but to keep losing weight at that rate would be a nightmare 😵. You'd be a skeleton before you know it.
Oh, and I'm sure that most of you die-hard Stephen King fans already know this, but for those of you who don't... The Running Man (with Arnold Shwartzenegger) is also a film based on the works of Stephen King. But you won't find that in the credits, because when the book was first published it was released under Stephen King's pin name Richard Bachman. Just a little Stephen King trivia. But, like I said, you probably already know this.

5.Maximum Overdrive(soundtrack(AC/DC), cool atmosphere, Emilio Estevez)
4.Misery(Kathy Bates in her nutty glory)
    3.Cujo complex protagonist(adultery)/mom
2.Carrie, was my 1st Stephen King book/movie adaptation and the movie still creeps me out! Also Sissy Spacek&Piper Laurie haunting performances.
1.Christine for watchability, can watch over and over, creepy/ funny at times(Darnell), muscle cars.

I got a bit of a Stephen King collection on Blu Ray, and yeah, all 5 that on your list, I got. As for my list, dang, don't like doing these because many times my thoughts change, but maybe number 1 anyways is Salem's Lot The 1970's Mini Series. I know, it's long, pretty cheesy, but was one of the first horror movies mum and dad let me watch of their tapes growing up when I was a little girl, so that might be why.

    3. It (2017) (Dang it! This is an amazing movie! Pennywise is the creepiest clown in this film!)

I completely agree with your "Pet Semetary" assessment. I always felt that Dale Midkiff gave the performance that the film needed, and as such he was eclipsed by Jud. But the personalities had to play out this way. I found it haunting, eerie, and heart-breaking. Miko Hughes was perfect in the role and i am so glad he didn't need extensive therapy after playing Gage.
So Cody, if anybody gives you a hard time about this list, at least you're not a person( like me) who really liked Alien3, Pet Semetary 2, Halloween 3, Nightmare on Elm St. 3, Wishmaster 1-4, and Maximum Overdrive.
Edit: aware that most of these are not SK related, but they are movies ya catch flack for liking...

I will say for me I would have 5. Salem's Lot 4. The Dead Zone 3. Christine 2. The Mist (that ending hurts so good) 1. The Shining the genius in King to me is one could easily argue the fact his non horror was better then his horror and he was unabashedly a horror writer that is how good is work is/was. Thanks for the list. Sorry you get the hate you get when you out yourself out there.... but just remember core sane people and "true" fans of the channel will always encourage you to be real an stay true to your own vision :) even if it is loving Hallowen 2 by Rob :). Heard 3 from hell is coming. @Cody L himself.... I have a semi more serious question. Is there ANY chance you will do a Devil's Rejects review sometime this year in 2019? I love your horror eye and passion and almost no one in the horror youtube space has done a review for it? Just curious. 5) The Dead Zone.
    4) Pet Sematary (89) I have lost loved ones including cats and dogs...haunting score by Elliot Goldenthal!
    3) Misery (An outstanding performance by Kathy Bates and Caan!)
    2) The Shining... although long, great cinematography, score, acting and loved the changes Kubrick made. I watched it late at night when I was a kid on HBO or Cinemax...nightmares!
    1) IT (remake)... perfect combination of horror and coming of age films...especially since I love the 80s.

Cody, I’d just like to thank you for convincing me to watch the original 1989 Pet Sematary, because I have to agree with you; I absolutely loved it, and I desperately want to read the novel now.
That being said, here’s a list!
    1. Pet Sematary (1989)
    2. The Shining
    3. IT (2017)
    4. Christine
    5. Carrie (1976)

#4. The Shinning. A slow burn of a movie that is a lot of fun to watch and quote.
#3. Carrie. Just a cool ass movie.
#2. MISERY. Need I say why??
#1. SALEM'S LOT (1979). This was my introduction to horror and it made me fear sleeping in a room with a large window.... you know the scenes.

    4. Pet Semetary (1989) -Zelda all the way
    3. Carrie -Spacek’s performance
    2. The Shining -Nicholson’s performance and it gave me nightmares as a kid
    1. It (2017) -The re-watchability factor makes this my top pick. It was a near perfect adaptation imho

    5. Pet Sematary (2019): Great acting, cinematography was amazing and the ending, while kinda abrupt, keeps you on the thrill ride
    4. Gerald's Game: Superb acting and the beautifully shot. On the edge of my seat the entire time.
    3. The Mist: suspenseful, monsters look amazing and the ending is so fucked up but amazing.
    2. Kubrick's The Shining: One of greatest performances by Nicholson, and just unnerving in every scene at the hotel.
    1. It (2017). Amazing story, great acting and Pennywise is creepy af.

  • @collinmurr3207

    5. Children of the Corn (1984): It's far from perfect but the atmosphere is great and that kid is terrifying.
    4. The Mist: For that ending alone.
    3. Carrie: Proves that nothing is scarier than high school.
    2. The Shining: A haunting, intriguing film that raises new questions every time I see it.
    1. Misery: As a writer, one of the scariest scenarios imaginable. The acting from Bates and Caan is brilliant. One of the best psychological horrors ever made.
That said, The Dead Zone and Pet Semetary are on my watchlist, so the list is subject to change.

My top 3 are: #3: Maximum Overdrive, the hobgoblin truck gave me nightmares as a kid. So I've a long history with this film and it starts there.
#2: Carrie: I was bullied growing up for being different so to see the victim get her revengeance was enjoyable. Also one of the first films I actually shed a tear to at the end. Any film that can make you feel a wide spectrum of emotion is worth a watch.
#1: IT: I always enjoyed films with a horror bend after a while and it wasn't until I was 8 and my aunt moved in with us that I really got to embrace it. It was one of the first horror films I enjoyed with my aunt and cousins, so it's a more personal reasoning behind it.

    My personal ranking
Quick Note: This is just going off my recent memory cause I've seen most of Stephen King's movies but I haven't watched many of them in years so I forgot about a lot of great movies, and after I rewatch the other movies I'm sure this list will change. With that said, here's my personal ranking for the top 5 Stephen King horror film adaptations.
    5.) The Langoliers
This is probably the most absurd pick on here but I watched this as a kid and one of the bits where people are trying to get on a plane and then one of the people gets ate has always stayed with me.
    4.) The Mist (2007)
The monsters all had cool designs, the atmosphere was eerie, and holy shit this movie has arguably the saddest ending to any movie ever.
    3.) Creepshow
This counts right? I love the aesthetic feel to it with all of the bold colors and all of the entertaining short films, my personal favorite being 'The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill' because of the sci-fi comedy horror mix.
    2.) Pet Sematary (1989)
You pretty much talked about everything I liked in this movie, there was a great atmosphere and the creep factor still holds up all these years later. Great film.
1.) IT (2017) : I really like this movie and as a remake I think everybody involved brought their A Game to make it as enjoyable as possible. I liked the cosmic horror elements and although I prefer Tim Curry's Pennywise, Bill Skarsgård did a great job. When I first bought the movie I watched it like 4 times a week and I never got tired of it.

I'm surprised that you didn't have The Mist on your top five. That film is a horror masterpiece. Dig your list though.
    1) The Mist
That movie is a fucking masterpiece. Anytime Frank Darabont's is attached to a Stephen King property, I extremely confident that will pure gold. He is a underappreciated writer and director. He co-wrote my favorite Nightmare film (Part III) and the cast is fucking phenomenal and that ending! My God what a masterpiece
    2)Christine
That has got to be John Carpenter's top 3 films of all time. I did not expect much from the film and then it blew me away. John, the actors, everyone who made this film did such an amazing job taking, what could have been a silly concept and made a very personal, intriguing and in a lot of ways kind of sad story. Genius film.
    3)The Shining
Kubrick made some bold decisions on this film and although it is a slow burn, that build was so good I forget how long the film is because each scene has is so well shot, lit up and so well placed. And the horror doesn't really stick out to me and to be frank, although it clearly is a horror film, I never really saw it that way, I saw it more as a mental thriller than anything.
    4)It (Chapter 1)
This film is a pure Hollywood franchise attempt and my God was it amazing. Having seen the original TV film and being entertained by it and then being turned off by as the years went by, I've always wanted to see a hard R, no holds bar attempt on this film and I felt that I got it on this one. One of the most satisfying adaptations I've seen.
    5)Misery
That movie was all Kathy Bates and her oscar win was well deserved. James Cann is fucking incredible as well. I'll never forget watching that film not feeling scared but the build up to Kathy's psychological breakdown started to get to me as kid when I watched the film, especially that famous scene when she fucks up James Cann character in his room. Pure classic and absolutely one of the best Stephen King's and just great horror film. Period.

    2. The Stand miniseries. Something about it. Maybe it's nostalgia but I watch it a few times a year.
    3. Christine
    4.Misery: constant tension. So good.
    5. Carrie: her psychotic mom made that movie so scary. It also made me think twice about making fun of people growing up. Not for fear, but seeing what Carrie had to endure at home and knowing there are other children that suffer like that.

Pet Sematary number 5 only because the ending was different from the book, possibly the greatest ending paragraph for any horror novel. Still in my top five, with The Mist just missing the list.

  • @randytaylor2485
    @randytaylor2485 5 лет назад

Carrie will always #1 and I think it's King's favorite as well. What Depalma did with the story, editing, characterization was brilliant. And the score is classic.
    2. Pet Semetary. Full of emotion. It starts eerie and ends eerie. Very creepy. No matter how old I get, this will always be scary..., and sad.
    3. Misery. Brilliant storyline. Drama, thriller and suspense all in one. Being held prisoner by your #1 fan is quite chilling.
    4. The Dead Zone. The scissor scene. Nuff said.
    5. Silver Bullet. It was a toss up between this, Maximum Overdrive, Cujo and Christine.,But I watched Silver Bullet not long ago and it has some scary really moments.
Now why I didn't put The Shining in here is a couple reasons. Let's get this out of the way first. I love the movie and everything that Kubrick did with it, however, it's almost too long and drawn out to be scary. It has more dry moments than not. But that moment when she realizes what he's been typing and how many pages is true horror. But It's not a "go to" movie for me. That's Carrie and Misery. But I still agree with your list.

King is synonymous with horror. It's impossible to pick just and I'm not 100 percent in agreement with your list but I do acknowledge that those are all terrific movies that I'd be happy to sit down and watch at any time I know that this is a horror edition but I gotta say that the Green mile or shawshank are my top two Stephen king movie adaptations just beautifully acted and the very definition of masterpieces. A bit off topic here. I remember you picked up Demon Knight a while back i dont think I saw your reaction to it
