Jordan Peele's sophomore Us, takes a more serious route and is filled with creepy symbols, hidden meanings, references, easter eggs, hidden secrets... just about everything that you look for in a Things You Missed™ episode, Us probably has.
In this video I'll look back at some of the Things I Missed In my original video on Us and find you 44 new Thing You (might have) Missed. This includes some tapes next to the TV that I didn't spot the first time, even more hidden examples of the number 11 and of twin imagery, the meaning behind the Black Flag shirts in Us, more references to the Hands Across America protests, more clues about the twist ending and the underground dwelling doppelgangers, more weird coincidences that you might not have caught.
I'll also be reading ALL of your comments from the previous video and pointing out some of the best viewer submitted Things You Missed, like the meanings behind some of the character names and connections to Jordan Peele's previous film, Get Out.
Finally, I'll address a couple of fan theories and supposedly hidden twists within the movie

About Us

Adelaide's voice box was crushed to an extent which is why she talks the way she does. Evidence for this is the shot of Addy as a child when she's underground and wakes up handcuffed to the bed. She grabs her throat as if to show that her throat hurts because it was crushed/damaged.

also lupita nyong’o mentioned that her voice for the character was inspired by a specific larynx disorder (spasmodic dysphonia), and that the voice for adult Adelaide was specifically crafted to sound like there was vocal damage

Another Thing You Missed In Us Was The Conversation Adelaide and Her Husband Were Having After Killing Their Friends Doppelgangers. Adelaide Was Convincing Her Family To Hurry And Leave, While The Husband Wanted To Stay In The House. Adelaide Screamed At Him, "You Don't Get To Make The Decisions Anymore!" I See This As A Clear Connection And Possible Reasoning As To Why Adelaide The Doppelganger Took and Switched Places With Her Original Because She Wanted To Be The Original And Make The Decisions For That Soul, And Stop Continuing To Be A Slave To The Originals Decisions. Which Is Also What The Other Doppelgangers Are Doing As Well Once They Escaped The Tunnels.

When “Adelaide” is at the therapy session with her parents. She is putting all of the animals in the sand box in a straight line. Looking just like how the hands across America movement looked. Maybe this has to do with her remembering the hands across America shirt on her tether that she switched with? Idk
But why would she do that if real one was the one who used the theme to rise. She shouldn’t even know what the heck they are when she is unable to do anything.
If you look closely one of the animals in the sandbox was also Rabbit 🐇

The damage to the vocal cords is extremely possibly, it doesn't take much force to do damage and it depends on how long she had to squeeze.
Lupits Nyong’o also said that the voice was based upon a real life condition that survivors of serious mental trauma experience.

Yeah also because they are to be opposites to their doppelgangers then it would make more sense for original Red to be strong enough to cause severe damage to her vocal chords
The condition called spasmodic dysphonia disorder
Red crushed Addys vocal cords to the point of damage for sure. Think about it, if she was able to speak from the beginning, she wouldve screamed for help when she woke up in a strange place. She wouldve tried speaking to an adult to help her figure out what was going on, she couldve taught other doppelgangers to speak, but only if she'd been able to. She couldnt speak because her vocal cords were crushed, crushed gard enough that Addy passed out and Red was able to relocate her.

Perhaps Pluto wasn't walking like a dog, but a spider.
Interestingly for Adelaide as the "real spider" Spider is associated with words and communication. Spider bestows the power to work magic over people and things. By weaving, it gains a certain element of control; once the prey is wrapped up, this control is complete.

Are the writer and Jordan Peele insane with all this layering and symbolism? It's like every shot they had to check off 75% of their underlining themes and find a set piece or clothing piece to mean something. Genius, but crazy genius.

I think Jordan Peele must have written this story a long time ago, and probably withdrew it from his closet to polish some of the finer details. Infact, I think he may have a couple more stories on which he may do the final touches before producing them.

Sabrina yes this movie is heavily layered, I’ve seen it 4 times and each time I learned something new.
this isn’t my thought but i thought it was cool (thanks to stefan_marin09 on twitter) i also saw something about how the 4 family members represent the four elements (earth, water, air, fire) :
-adelaide (earth) bc she is the only one who was born on earth and knows the way down to the underground land
-gabe (water) he is obsessed with his boat aka a form of water transportation, and his tether abraham dies in the water
-zora (air) she is in track and a popular saying for runners is “run like the wind” (yes i know it’s a reach but it kinda fits)
-jason (fire) kinda obvious, he’s obsessed with the match magic trick, pluto’s face is burned from his “truck actually working, when the tethered family first enters the house pluto is the one to light the fireplace, and he later dies by jason walking him backwards into a fire

I'm sure people already pointed this out, but the analysis of everyone's names compelled me to get Pluto's name out of my system. I realize it's pretty obvious, but I need to say it anyway. Pluto: Roman god of the Underworld, the same Underworld which modern believers would associate with Hell, and when you hear the word Hell, the first thing you think is Fire. So there's that. Now, lets look at the astronomical counterpart, Pluto, furthest known planetary-ish body from the sun, and in recent years reclassified from planet to sub-planet; with surface temperatures on average negative 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Ironically, the surface is also covered in methane ice, methane being an extremely flammable element when in a gaseous stage, it's extreme distance from the sun keeping it frozen, and in darkness. Born as the final child, treated as a subhuman among subhumans, living in a world of coldness, darkness, isolation, he uses fire as a sanctuary, scarring himself in the process.
ive already commented this, but it could also be a reference to mickey mouse and the characters goofy and pluto, both of which being dogs but only one of which being treated as a person while the other one is treated like an animal
The 4 bars on the Black Flag shirt also mirror the 4 family members

Dont know if you picked it up but when the family was in the car A was off beat while she was trying to teach the son how to snap his fingers...fast forward to when the boy tethered was backing up into the flames...he was actually able to snap his fingers. Proving he was an original.

Here's another pretty cool detail: the daughter Zora is presumably named after Harlem Renaissance author Zora Neale Hurston, who wrote Their Eyes Were Watching God, among other masterpieces. We all know Zora favors rabbit-themed shirts. Less well - known is the fact that Zora Neale Hurston began her writing career by collecting African-American folk tales in her 1935 ethnographic study Mules and Men that features a number of Brer Rabbit stories. Brer Rabbit, and the rabbit character in general, is one of the best-known trickster figures in oral and written American literature and folklore. Brer Rabbit stories typically involve the rabbit outwitting some larger animal and winning a prize, even if that prize is only the satisfaction of having successfully tricked the more powerful predator and thus having avoided being eaten. @@forensicbanana1875 I think 'Pluto' has more to do with the fact that Pluto was the god of the underworld in Greco-Roman mythology (to be more accurate, 'Hades' was the Greek name).
Jason is holding a rabbit in the ambulence at the end of the movie that you can see when he looks at his mom strangely. This signifies the fact that Jason, as has been pointed out, is part doppleganger as the rabbit is from the underground world.

Yeah, I think the mask is a werewolf too. Werewolves are often considered to be a reference to the two natures inside of humans - beastly and civilized. That would fit in nicely to the theme of Us.
I think everyone had the ability to control their doppelgänger. In one of the scenes close to the beginning when we saw the underground they was all doing the exact same as the “original” was doing at the time.

I said this in your other video but I wanted to point it out again about how you mentioned the news report the Wilson family watches and how the time "2:37" appears in the corner of the screen and I thought back on the Book of Jeremiah and tried to see if there's anything significant about "2:37" in the of that book and this is what I got...
"Moreover, you will leave that place with your hands on your head, for the LORD has rejected those you trust; you will not prosper by their help.”
I found that interesting and eerie since the Wilson's friends, the very people they trust, ended up dying quickly and could not help them.

Please, please read, its going to be a long one, sorry. Ok, this is my thought, there's a deference of doing something and thinking of doing it. So, when the dad "Gabe", is on the couch in front of "Abraham", you see Gabe, "think" and then push his glasses up to correct them, which cause Abraham to do it. Same thing when they're on the boat, Gabe thinks about hitting his own head to make Abraham to do it. So, the same goes for Jason and Pluto in the closest, Jason is thinking, I'm going to wave my hand around and then take my mask off and it makes Pluto do it too. Do you get what I'm saying? Also, with Jason/pluto, with the car being on fire. People do things all the time without thinking about it, but if they "think" about doing it. You know? So, Adelaide/Red, when Adie was a little girl, she thought about wondering off, which made Red react to coming up and meeting her, ok? Now they're switched. So the new Adie learns to dance, but said she never had the legs for it, but, when Adie dances she has to think about her moves, its cause Red to dance, but really creepy, which is my opinion. What if the dollpergangers down bellow could control us too, in that way? So the question is are any of us in control of are own actions?

i don’t know if you mentioned this in the last video, but pluto (jason’s doppelgänger)’s name is possibly a reference to an old disney clip called “pluto’s judgement day”where pluto creates a mess in mickeys house while chasing a kitten causing mickey to scold pluto. pluto then takes a nap in front of the fireplace, and dreams of his judgement day, being taken *underground* to hell, surrounded by *fire* and being tortured by the cats he wronged in his life, showing many cats pluto has killed. One of the cats was scared into a river by pluto and drowned. similar to the way Abraham died in the lake. another was traumatized by his bark, much like how ‘red’ was traumatized after being choked and locked in the underground, and also like the whole family, traumatized by this event. Pluto was about to be *burned alive* just like how pluto died in the movie, and in the short, pluto makes up with the cat. kinda like how jason seems to forgive alilade at the end of the movie while in the ambulance.

Jason was able to control Pluto due to the fact that he was the exact opposite in a way. The beach scene where the twins had mention how weird Jason was, his sister mentions that he is not able to focus on stuff for long. It seems like Pluto on the other hand, is able to focus on detail especially with Jason, thus causing a mirror effect on his tethered self.
You have apoint, those words aren't random at all.
I think there is another reference to Get Out...in the begining, where there was the shot with the rabbits...there was a shot where all of them were white, except for one black one at the bottom...if you look carefully enough, you'll notice it

Tuesday Knight is the name of the actress who plays Kristin in Nightmare 4. She also sings the title track that plays during the opening credits "Running from this nightmare".. yes I have no life lol

Adelaide must have some kind of empathy for the tethered ( at least the kid tethers) since she Is a tethered herself, I think she can somewhat understand pluto, Adelaide thought that Pluto could change and come with her and her family, but since Pluto is a reference to a dog and dogs are loyal to his master, He was on red's side. And jason realizes that Pluto was setting up a trap for them at the car scene. Adelaide didn't want to see another meaningless death
The actor who portrayed Jason and Pluto confirmed it was a werewolf mask before the film's release.
Either way both sets of kids are half doppelganger.
When the Wilson’s are stopped on their way to the beach they see an ambulance and paramedics loading the old man with the Jeremiah 11:11 sign, who was killed by the “Tethered” old man that Jason sees on the beach.

in regards to the mothers reveal notice what direction shes looking from in the fun house when it references the flashback notice it's from the direction of the clone
Didn't Gabe adjust his glasses in the first meeting with the tethers and Abraham followed, which shows that average humans control their tethers as well as tethers controlling humans as real adelaide explains that red's actions above ground (getting married and having kids) forced adelaide to do the same underground.

Justin Sanchez I also thought of something interesting, since on the trailer and movie it shows Adelaide’s face shocked that’s a red flag that her double was looking at her.
There were multiple scenes where the doppelfamily tried to mimic the movement of the real family. The daughter had this moment when her and her doppel were on both sides of the car. I suppose Pluto is the youngest and has the least amount of control over his own body on the surface, so he mimics Jason, because that's all he ever did. That's why he's easily tempted to mimic Jason's movement all the time.

I dont remember if this was said before but when the doppelganger below are playing "Rock, Papper, Scissors" they both playing Scissors.. the shape of their hand while making scissors resembles 11:11.
Red’s voice is weird because of the strangling. It was confirmed when Lupita talked about how she based the voice off of a disorder that occurs when a blunt injury damages nerves and vocal cords in the throat.

Okay so idk if I’m entirely convinced about the boy being switched, but how do you explain the drawing of the man on the beach? He draws it from a 3rd person point of view. Why would he draw the back of himself looking at the man?
Ressa Turner year and he seemed more intrigued than afraid and the way he said “ there’s a family in our driveway” he sounded like he was ready to have some fun. No fear at all and it was late night
Ressa Turner He is switched - At the beginning when the mom gets chocked - The therapist tells the parents she should DANCE OR DRAW to express herself . She dances . The son DRAWS . Also, that same scene they point and look at 11:11 together - knowing it’s about to start !

Also, the Hands Across America TV commercial at the beginning has 2 things that foreshadow the last scene. First one is the woman says "6 million people will 'tether' themselves together". and the second is the jingle that plays in the background is the same song that plays while it shows the Tethers actually joining hands across America. eli30013 wow great catch, and she lined up the rabbit in the middle, and during that scene when the dad went to take a smoke, he stood over her and pulled her ponytail and the ruffles on her shirt twice and you noticed the eerie sound in the background during that time. Did you find that kind of odd that he did that?

And in Lupita interview with Ellen she mentioned her Red character was traumatized and I know that has different meanings but when you see how her dad doppelgänger was acting down below .....

And another fact is that Pluto is a planet, which doesn't count as an actual planet, yet again, Another hint that pluto lives in the shadows of other planets, like all the other tethered
The use of Les Fleur by Minnie Ripperton at the end is also something to point out, the lyrics of the song are essentially about people coming together and rejoicing, darkness conquering light, and a "New time" being born - it's also used in the Hands Across America commercial at the start of the movie, although its an instrumental version
The first guy to die was actually the same homeless guy from the beginning holding the sign. Not a random dude that had the same sign.

I watch this movie all the time and I'm always just as interested and captivated by it each time. I noticed something new for the first time today. When tether Addie is at the therapist and she's putting all of the toys in a line, its because the real Addie is doing that with whatever sharp painful toys she talks about. She's already thinking about her plan.

The hands across America event happened for 15 minutes,along with that when Addy was a kid and she got strangled it took 15 minutes to switch places.
The fact that they were trying to decide who gets to drive based on kill count was something that I really appreciated as a much-needed light-hearted moment. 😆

6:19 there are a couple of shots where the "RX9000" bat logo is shown on purpose. If you know anything about RX9000 bats, each bat is stored at a certain humidity to stabilize wood fibers for peak performance. The RX9000 was literally made different (they are split from logs rather than sawn together), and has a COUNTERFEIT version (sawn) of it that is inferior, something cheaper bats are made of. RX9000's represent those above (stored at a certain humidity), and the counterfeit version of those below.
