  • This is the same 18hp that's in my other video. Ben you were right not a thing wrong with it like you said. It's on a StarCraft SF-14 very deep V 14ft boat 68" wide and the GPS showed 24MPH. I said in the video it's 1956 but we all know it's not. sorry

    What a smooth running motor👍Got a 56" 15 that isn't as pretty but runs like a Swiss watch

    Probably the VERY BEST motor in it's h.p. range! Way more reliable thaan the Merc, or the Chrysler in this range! Can't kill 'em!!!!

    Sweet motor! Gotta love those 50s OMCs. I have a similar 18hp '57 Evinrude Fastwin. Great, smooth running motor, throttles down to slow troll really well, and pretty quiet, too, as long as I keep the hood latch from clanking against the hood.

    Wow our family has this motor. Never done anything work just new plugs every few years. Used it on a 8 foot hydroplane we flew around the lake.

    Ahhh -- a fellow Hoosier, and no too far from me.
    I become the owner of a 1959 Johnson FD-13 18hp. I bought it off Craigslist for $200 to go on a 1975 Sears Gamefisher 14' Tri-hull I am restoring. One the advice of an aircraft mechanic I know - he said, since I do not know how long it was stored, that before I run it to fill the cylinders with Marvel Mystery Oil and let it sit 24 hours (apparently this is what they do with old aircraft engines) to make sure that the rings were not stuck and or rusted. He said then to pump the motor over slowly to push the oil out ---so on and so forth.
    I did all that, I had to rebuild the leaky carb (leaky being an understatement), it needs a slow idle needle still (tip on existing is bent) ...but other than that I have it running well. Runs smooth, runs through the throttle fine, does not cough or spit when coming back down to slow speeds (all of this is in a trough of course), and idles well when turned to "slow" ----
    Is there anything else I should look for or consider looking into for this motor?
    Or should I figure "if it is running fine is probably is fine"?

      I would change out water pump and lower gear case seals and gear oil

      Outboard Fun ...gear oil of course is planned. I will add the seals and pump to the list. thanks.

    I just got one that the junk man got and was gonna throw it away. It was locked. I put sea foam in it and it turns over with good compression. Missing tiller handle.

    What are you running for fuel/oil ratio? Factory recommendation back then was 24:1 but they ARE "fully jeweled" ie. needle bearings on both ends of the con rods so they'll run 50:1 w/ no problem. OMC still had models with the old bronze bushings so they didn't change their official mixture until all of those were jeweled which I believe was 1962. And, back then you were using basically 'straight weight" non-detergent crankcase oil for lubricant not the much better TC-W3 let alone plain ol' TC-W! That's what I run in my FD-12 and I don't expect to ever have a bearing failure or scuffed cylinder wall.

      I run it at 42:1 I know this is FULL ROLLER BEARING MOTOR

      I have 5 gallons tank I mix in then pour in the motor's tank. I put 16oz oil to 5 gallons then just keeping toping off the pressure tank before I go out I never go out with the tank in boat being full. Then when I use up can in my gar. I go and mix up 5 more gallons but your right I use 40 to 1 not 42

    sounds great to me. The 18s have some noticeable gear whine, which is normal for the design.

    Some one gave me this(making room in his garage) It pulls so hard! I would love to get and electric start for it. I haven't got it running yet Thinking about moding the carb so it accepts a NON pressurized fuel tank.

      @outboardfun3353  5 лет назад +1

      The carb don't need a mod you have to add a fuel pump to the motor

    Nice looking motor but too bad the original encapsulated plastic front badge gone. I have two motors just like that both with decent badges. Both run and have been converted to single-line tanks - it's not a tough job - just cannibalize an intake port cover and pump from a 1960 and up 18 and put a 1/8" pipe plug in the front.

    Now I got it running even better then in this video. I checked the timing and adjusted the points again and its running real good now.

      please help ic you can. i have what i believe is a 59 18hp golden jubalee and the water pump isnt working but i dont know how to disconnect the gear leaver linkages to fix it. any ideas?

    • @outboardfun3353
      @outboardfun3353  8 лет назад

      You have to remove that little cover on the side of the motor about half up from the water pump. It' haled on with just two screws. Here's a video showing how to do it. Your motor will have only the one cover on the outside not 2 like in this video but the linkage is the same.

      One more reccomendation run that baby out of gas when u come to the dock to take her outta the water that way the gas wont varnish up in the carb

      The old OMC were 18" or 23" I'm don't sure what year the motors went to the 15" and 20". If you look close in my videos I have built the transom up the 18" to match up my 1950"s OMC motors

      @russg1801 6 лет назад

      So, you're saying you can tell, from the audio and visual on this, that one cylinder's timing is a tad advanced? 'Cuz that would be the case if point gap were too wide - the rubbing block would ride up on the ignition cam early and the contacts would open sooner. Could lead to detonation if it's too far off, but honestly these old magneto motors never seemed to be that fussy - lots of 'em were probably gapped using a MATCHBOOK COVER Back in the Day with no ill effects.

    • @outboardfun3353
      @outboardfun3353  6 лет назад

      I now have one of the OMC timing fixtures. When I done this one I didn't have it. This was my first 18hp. I now have about six of then. I no longer have this one. What was causing the miss on this one ended up bring a bad crank seal.
