NOTE! Since this video was made Elektron released a firmware update with Sample Locks, so there's no need for my little hack (though it's still cool anyway!). They also reduced the price to $300 instead of $400.
Loopop I swear you make these devices because you know them in depth! You study these like some people do when getting ready for med exams! Of course I always gain lots of knowledge from your videos that’s for true thanks and be safe

My first 'Patreon'....so much useful stuff here from 'Loopop'....very grateful :) I'm a drummer with an interest in electronic percussion and MIDI.....looking to expand my consciousness ;-)
Oversynth has some really cool overlays for the model samples and cycles if you think the layout is too plain or not readable enough. got one for my cycles and love it
Your content is so inspiring. It always makes me want to dig deeper into my on machines and pass on the knowledge. Thanks for making your channel and videos. :) I have a long way to go for my explanation on my videos, but every-time watching yours gets me inspired.
This has to be one of the most understand and thorough tutorial I’ve seen. Thanks for it. Honestly I was just scratching a gear itch I was having but my money situation has been limited for a bit now, I picked up the unit, shipped to my door for $300. Wow I’m so stoked on this machine. Immediately intuitive and I watched your vid know that there’s more. There most certainly is. This is gotta be the most functional and useful budget box out there? More importantly for me, super fun. In the same box that was shipped with my Model was also the Skulpt which is funny because it’s been three day since but haven’t even plugging in yet! Too busy getting familiar with the Elektron. After your vid I’m thinking I’ve got my head around pretty much all of it? Once again thanks a million for this video. It’s really really great, I appreciate you. 🎶🖤⚡️⚡️🎛🎚
Thank you especially for highlighting Model:Samples unique capabilities. I really value the velocity and aftertouch for capturing a performance. I LOVE the dedicated parameter knobs with LEDs showing when they've been applied. And the ability to set per-track beat divisions - polyrhythms rule! Keep up the good work!
The digitakt is waay too convoluted for me. I want things as direct as possible. So I get the Model:Samples. Simplicity/limitations also forces you to be creative, if you embrace it
model samples is basically the sampler in Analog Rytm plus that chance thing. i love the feature where the LEDs light up with the parameter locks..such a nice touch
The Model Samples has class compliant USB Audio! That's a great feature for people like myself who enjoy producing on an iPad. Wasn't too interested in this device until I learned that.
I started off writing techno with trackers back in the 90s with an IBM386, and had some trouble explaining to people exactly what and how I was doing what I was doing, aside from "video-game music stuff" Once I found the term "sample-based sequencer" all I had to do was explain what a sample was... And what a sequencer was... Good times. And a good vid comparing some neat gear.
This was a great review/comparison as always, and really helps answer a lot of questions. Thanks! You make some of the best informational videos on youtube. There was one bit I found a bit misleading though. About USB Audio, I wouldn't describe the M:S as more limited, because it has USB Audio... while the Digitakt does not. This function has been present in hardware synths since about 2004, so in 2019 it's kind of a weird thing to not have. The M:S is a huge step forward in this way, because it finally fixed a major long-standing bug in Elektron's products. So I'd describe things a bit differently: The Model:Samples implements class-compliant USB Audio, which provides lossless audio in a way which "just works" automatically with virtually any software on virtually any computing device from now until the end of time. The M:S only provides only two channels though, which was an odd decision by Elektron, but it's still a step in the right direction. The Digitakt does not implement USB Audio, and has thus far mostly(*) been limited to only analog output. * As a footnote, Elektron has been working on a proprietary PC app which may be able to send lossless audio data over USB in some circumstances using a proprietary protocol. But two years after the Digitakt's release, this proprietary app still has not had a stable release, and was not even available as a beta until a month ago. It only works on two platforms so compatibility is very limited, it requires an account, it might cost extra if Elektron changes their mind again, and it is unlikely to be supported long-term. However, it may be a usable stopgap for a while until Elektron makes the device's firmware standards-compliant like they did with the Model:Samples.
Personally, I'm fine with just analog audio... but it'd be really nice if I could transfer samples and firmware to/from my Digitakt. It doesn't have USB Storage though, so I can't do that unless I convince someone with a compatible computer to let me install Elektron's app and then use it for a few minutes. That's enough of a hassle that I only bother for major firmware updates.
Hey - first, thanks for the first paragraph - I appreciate it. Regarding the rest - I don't think it's misleading to say MS is more limited if you look at what I think is the biggest upside of USB audio - and that's individual multitrack audio transfer for further editing. Like you, I don't mind recording analog audio if it's just the combined output of the instrument, so the whole audio interface feature is not a must. Where I think USB audio capabilities *are* important is if I've created a multi track piece that I want to further edit on a computer. In that case, having multichannel USB is a big time saver. You're right that ideally multi channel class compliant would be best, and the plugin could be an additional bonus so that people don't have to deal with aggregate devices if MS/DT only appear as class compliant interfaces. All that said, in 2019 we still see many instruments come out with USB MIDI, but no USB audio at all, so something is better than nothing, and better late than never.
I hope it didn't come across as disrespectful, because you do fantastic work here. Your videos about synths go well beyond mere reviews and are a wonderful educational series in their own right. The world is a better place because of you. Mostly, I'm concerned about reviews which portray the latest product's standards compliance as a downgrade from the proprietary system used before. The class-compliant USB Audio in the Model:Samples appears to signal an extremely positive change in the company. I hope they will continue along that path and include it in all their future products, and reviewers have some influence over that by giving the change a warm or cold reception. Positive press here could help guide the company toward designs which are more compatible and more future-proofed. So I don't use the phrase "USB audio" to describe what the Digitakt and other Overbridge-dependent products do. I try to use wording which makes it clear that it is not the standards-compliant sort usually implied by that phrase. Rather, it's a proprietary system with proprietary baggage. And although in this case it has an expanded feature set when it works, it intentionally has a much more limited scope of where and how it can function at all. Elektron originally locked those features behind a proprietary protocol in order to offer access for an additional fee. It was kind of a customer-hostile move, and the market's response to it was very negative, so the company aborted the plan and decided not to charge additional money for it. So that makes it free as in beer. But it's still locked behind a proprietary protocol, so it's not free as in speech. It's artificially limited for reasons which are monetary rather than technological, the remnants of a failed money-making scheme. I see the Model:Samples as an opportunity to reward the company for taking steps to correct a bad decision made years ago, an attempt to make things right by replacing customer-hostile tactics with customer-friendly tactics. I don't really care much about it as a product, since it's mostly just a lightweight version of something I already have. But I care about it a lot as a sign of positive change. I hope this makes sense. You're awesome, and I'm optimistic that Elektron will continue on its path toward awesomeness too. Apologies for the wall of text.
@@ToyKeeper no worries an again thanks for the first paragraph ;) ...and I agree with you 100% that class compliant audio is the better way to go (with overbridge as a sugar on top that saves you the trouble of aggregating audio interfaces). I don't know which reviews you're talking about that portray class compliant as being a downgrade, but lack of per track audio streaming is a limitation compared to Digitakt, which, to people who mix on a PC is important.
well there is only one loopop. love your content. a lot of people are complaining about the model samples. i think it is a good way to get in the elektron world with the extrodinary sequencer. i am not into elektron gear until now. i always loved the possibilties but the menu diving and double/triple function workflow kept me away from the machines. the model samples could be my first elektron machine.
Thanks! People complain about everything, and this isn’t perfect, but what I think they did brilliantly here is carefully select the performance features that would be most fun to play with and make them accessible
Doleegop thats for sure but i am a mpc live user. it goes far beyond the digitakt imo. i only want that sequencer for my nord drum 3p. looks like a perfect match to me.
Thanks for the thorough review as always. The Model Samples is nice especially the polyrhythmic and aftertouch possibilities but the highly comparable Circuit released years ago still wins on scales and general playing fun if you ask me. Sample flipping is also easier to use (and fun to improvise on) compared to the single sample divided into sub samples.
I wrangled between the MS and Circuit and went with the MS because I love Elektron stuff, and the 1 gig of sample storage. I needed many minutes of sampling rather than 1.
@@poodlebites69 In case the one you bought didn't come with OS 1.8 make sure to put it on as it adds micro-step based unquantized recording. Also individual note velocity tracking for chords (which you can disable I believe), also editable after the fact for ultra-nerdy access. I don't believe there is a piece of gear that was so good to start with that received so many relevant enhancements with each OS release. And if you want to get into the amazing soft synth and/or download patches you can make it even more like you want it. I've actually made jazz and ska backup tracks on it that sound like real people playing and also super dynamic house tracks with side chaining and weird bass. It's just crazy!!! I think you'll enjoy both machines. I love the actual sound of the Electron machines and the interface on this one seems like even me and my thick head could get into it
Great video, now i understand the difference. Here in Europe the Sample is 440 and digitakt is around 620 Euros. Given the differences i think Model sample should be a bit cheaper.
Agree price difference doesn't make a ton of sense when you look at features - but they seem to be making it as something a little different not just a bare bones digitakt
agreed. i think it will be cheaper. the digitakt started at 750€. when the model samples is at 350€ therre will be a lot more people buying it. even if is a different concept/machine i think electribe 2 and drumbrute impact are the competitors.
I understand people have different requirements. Someone with small budged with only a couple of machines is better off with a used Electribe 2 sampler for 250. 16 Tracks, some level of synth, built in sampler, card slot...like no competition. However i can also see how the Model Sample is attractive. The Elektron workflow, the direct controls, the mighty elektron sequencer. I still paid more for a Digitakt even though i could have a electribe for half a price. But the working with an Electron is such a joy.
I really really like the look of this product. Would love a digitakt but the model has a much better chance of making into my house. Great bang for buck. Can’t wait to see what other model offerings they bring out
Yep - as I mention in the video it’s in the same price range as the Red Electribe 2 - I partied ways with mine but I’ve created quite a few extensive videos about it which reflect what it can do as well as attempt to extend it as much as possible...
@@Redegard - if you’ve got external midi gear the DT has 8 midi tracks in addition to the 8 sample tracks. The screen on the DT is excellent, plus you can sample on the machine itself, no need for sample transfer. But if you only need 6 sample tracks and are happy to use a computer to add samples the m:s will do the job nicely. One thing I don’t like on the Model:Cycles which I assume is the same as the m:s is having to press func and the track pad to mute. Difficult to do with one hand so awkward if you’re using more than one machine live.
elektron model:samples reminds me of the first sampler I fell in love with, the Akai S-20, which was pretty much Akai's answer to Roland's (Boss) Dr. Sample, both all real time, no sequencing ability, the only thing bad about the Akai device. I want one of these elektron devices, thanks for opening up about it.
Nice story. For me,S/M,is like Yamaha answer was. SU700. beatiful instrument. Almost no menu. Kind of knob per function. Now,in SM, I see incarnation of SU700...
Hey, thanks for the video, I’m a Sp404 and Eps user, I use Maschine and Live, but I hesitate between a Digitakt or a model sample to complete my set up with or without My Daw, contrôle my synths, play with my Sp. Old Mpc user I’m really interested by the Elektron workflow, Plocks, conditional trigs etc...,
I think digitakt now has the per track scale length which helps to run polyrhythm however I'm still struggling with he CH.LEN and M.LEN .. not able to figure out it's use. I got it for the track length and scale stuffs .
If you had the first 5 Volcas (inc Sample), a Minilogue, a Monologue, a Behringer Model D, a Keystep and you were recording samples with a Zoom H5N, and your DAW was Ableton 9; which mid range Sampler/Sample player would you choose?: - Elektron Model:Samples. (Great sample sculpting & training yourself up in the Ekektron workflow. Seems fresh tech and stepping into the future). - Korg Electribe 2 (Does it integrate better with Volcas & Minilogue? I do like Korg on Korg action, so it’s tempting). - Novation Circuit (No screen, but intuitive workflow). - Roland SP404 (Ultra playable Lo-Fi Hipster favourite & direct sampling) - Something else in this price range I’ve forgotten. I’ll probably one day use more than one, but what do you peeps think is the logical step up from the Volca Sample for a year or two? 🚶♂️
I don't have as many synths as you, but my collection is growing and I'm at a similar decision point. I'm choosing the Model Samples because it can sequence up to 6 external synths via MIDI, has a screen, and the UI seems excellent and really tuned for live performance. Standard price is now $300, so it seems a better value than the other options. You may end up selling your Volca Sample, as it would be pretty obsolete if you had the M:S as well. As for KORG integration, the M:S can send MIDI over TRS cable directly for instruments that accept that (such as the excellent KORG NTS-1). For all others, you would use the adapter cable to convert to 5 pin MIDI. You can also pass your Keystep through the M:S, but I think I would have it hooked up to one or more synths directly, so you could use the Keysteps sequencer as well as the M:S one.
@@stephenshumaker8444 - Wow, awesome reply. Really handy to know it plays nice with the other equip. Thank you. Somehow missed it before. Full disclosure - I’m the buyer for a family member (not the user) & I go down research rabbit holes in my own weird non-musician GAS issue. Lol. Since this post they haven’t got a lot of equipment other than a couple of Behringer clones (303 & 606). Next thing will be a Yamaha MG mixer & Keystep 37, then maybe and 808 clone. But I’m still looking at samplers for the long haul. I just think Elektron is a good journey no matter the exact need at the time. So I’m leaning waaay towards anything Elektron. I’ve gotten some advice to not bother with Samples or other entry equip like Cycles and jump straight to Digitakt. I really like “intro” gear though. So unless budget jumps up, I can see getting them a surprise Samples and just say “here is an upgrade to your Volca Samples” & if they take to it then look at Digitakt waaay down the line.
Plus yeah, they seem to be more on a synth/drum machine, into Ableton and using a mixer live kinda journey with old school electro, ambient & IDM type tracks. Not a sample player, or clip triggerer. I think that’s why a novation MIDI grid I got has gone largely unused. I’ll focus on drum machines and synths and wait for equip requests like the mixer. I always do this. I kinda jump the gun in their technical evolution/current process. Well certainly at the start anyway. At the start I had no idea and pretty much bought a beginner midi keyboard from every company so they could compare. Crazy stuff like that. I mean trying lots of gear doesn’t hurt. And Arturia seemed to win that tech showdown. I think maybe the Elektron ecosystem is for much further down the line. But it’s fun to research. Lol. And yeah, this Samples looks great to me. But maybe a couple of years away. Just rambling. Thanks again for your initial great input.
maybe i missed something regarding sample locks (around 20:00), but it is possible during a sequence to change the sample at any time. for exemple having on step "8" a different sample loaded and played instead of the one currently used on the pad.
Could model samples be used with the rk002 smart midi cable? If a sample could be a waveform, and each track can be played via midi, it should work as a poly synth. Sort of similar to how the digitakt does it.
Did Elektron ever update the firmware to the Digitakt to allow each track to run at a different "scale" (1x, 1/2x, 2x, etc)? Like the Model:Samples can do? I sure hope they updated that, three years after the release of the M:S, haha.
Great explanation, as always. You mentioned an external sequencer, if needed something more sophisticated for MIDI controlling external gear. Any advice what can be used for that? Something with conditional trigs, chance and all that stuff.
You can't do it directly, but you can pan individual trigs, by using velocity levels, set to control the pan (then you can choose weather, to have velocity also control volume, or not). You can also apply LFO to panning the track. Hope they add normal per trig panning, in a future update.
Great video, as ever. Would love to see that LFO quick-assign shortcut on the DT one day. The list ain't fun. Though, if I had my druthers, I'd rather see 'scale' per track on the DT. We could eek a lot more out of 64 steps if we could cut the tempo in 1/2 or 1/4. Here's to hoping they share firmware code and those are just in line to be ported... :)
Is it possible to feed one long sample into a track and change/lock the start point per pad on the Digitakt as well? You showed it as a workaround trick that can be used on the Cycles, but didn't say whether such trick is possible on the Digitakt also.. Cheers!
Yeah, me too. Its gotta blend or trouble. But I'm lucky cause wifey doesn't come down to the man cave so my mission impossible is getting it from the front door to the mancave without her noticing...
I know its more a joke, but the clichee and toxic relationship this kind of joke normalizes is not cool. if your partner is like this, solve it or get out.
Surprised I missed this video... haha. Still LOVE my Model:Samples (my only Elektron gear). It needs an ATTACK parameter (for pad-type samples), and some small tweaks (including SMALLER FONT for the browser!! UGH....).... but in general, I think it's a perfect box, especially with the $100 price drop in 2019. :)
@@lukegregg5944 The Cycles is cool but just wait until Sonicware releases their Liven XFM... really dope. Still love my Model:Samples and use it nearly every day. So worth it.
thanks, great as always loopop! I wonder if the loops can run infinitely without the sequencer. triggering a loop with a track pad with something like hold-mode on or holding itself? (the background is, that I don't like that the sequencer determines the loop. the same problem is with octatrack and digitakt. they trigger a loop, but it gets retriggered with the sequencer, so I have to set the bpm that it matches exactly the "perfect loop I found" & it is really annoying. similar problem is even with ableton. nobody has "calculate bpm from loop length"-function. "warp 2 bars" in simpler comes from the other side of the problem (force loop to a generic bpm) and is pretty cool, but if you have a beautiful, hazy loop, you don't necessarily hear the 2 bars. I wrote already to ableton & elektron & they offered only workarounds. The only thing that comes close is having a modular sampler (with flexible start & end points) then "end-of-loop" trigger out into a multiplier module... maybe you can understand what I am rambling about & have a tip? thaaaanx
Yeah sorry... I don't think I understand... I mean octatrack stretches quite nicely and extracts BPM from a sample - doesn't that give you what you need? Here's a different idea, may or may not be what you want but I think is quite nice: load up a few samples from different songs you like, set decay to infinity, and the samples to loop. Then trigger the tracks just by hitting the track keys (without running the sequencer) and mess with pitches down or up (down works better), and trim start and end points, until you get wonderfully polyrhythmic mashups from whatever songs you picked. Just ignore the BPM ;) No need for a time stretch algorithm, on the contrary, pitching down will change the loop length into different polyrhythms every time.... Now I'm rambling ;)
A question about the Ctrl All function (really awesome) : So, basically when you start holding the Track button, entering the CtrlAll mode basically, the previous state of the pattern is automatically temporarily saved? Or you need to save it yourself BEFORE starting to use the CtrAll ? Thanks!
Do you know if you can create a multitrack sequence using your DAW? Basically using various MIDI In channels to control individual tracks/instruments? Love your channel!
Can a MIDI track on the Model just send out clock to a synth with it’s own seq/arp? Maybe Track 6 is always Clock Out - and the other tracks just play drums/perc?
I beseech you make a video overview plus tips exploring/explaining the mpc live, pretty pretty please. The OP-1 also deserves your clear and articulate analysis, review, and workflow insights.
loopop you are a mensch and a gentleman. The hardest thing about op-1 is how to optimize the workflow and still be able to important and finish a project in a daw at least that’s what I struggle with. The MPC live is something of a blunt instrument compared to the elegance of elektron or teenage engineering but it’s rock solid for what it is. With the immediacy and intuitive of 80’s sampling drum computers that has been largely absent in most drum machines after the mpc 3000. It shouldn’t be dismissed just because of it’s association with rudimentary rap production. even without all the bells and whistles that of other samplers have. Sorry to rant thank you for the reply I look forward to your future videos 🖖
Thanks! Yeah I love the OP-1 but the tape workflow stresses me out - one mistake and it’s over ;) still, it has things no one else does, and it’s fun...
loopop I know what you mean, red means recording seems to have figured something out about composing and arranging on the OP-1 that sadly escapes my intellect :/
can you use a different set of pads (maschine) and midi connect to the sequencer and still use the knobs, etc.? Also would it work for using midi keyboard to control melodic sounds?
Amazing comparison as always. That sample start hack makes this a lot more appealing to me... Mono samples though! No love for wide claps, or unison. I'm all for limitations, but that's pushing it IMO.
Great video, that said 17:55 sample locks, and this is nothing on Loopop, he still rocks in my opinion. That sample chain “hack” is such a boring, mediocre and self defeating workflow because it’s inconsistent with the 576 sample feature per project on the model samples. It makes more sense to have sample locks as a feature in regard to complement in that other 576 samples per project feature. Not to mention you have six and not eight track to work with. The digitone has four tracks but has the sample locks feature and it does make an great difference in workflow speed. We want real flexibility.😍 Much love L.
Crazy though here. I have not idea no idea how midi works from a technical standpoint, but let's say you want to sequence 2 external devices that both use the same TRS wiring standard. could you use a mini audio "mixer" like the myVolts mickXer as a midi hub? sounds dumb but I'm asking anyway lol
What Loopop he is doing at 17:55 with some trick is basically a sample lock at each step and this is before the Electron firmware update, am I right? I’m asking this because Electron has as minimum requirement for this update for Pc users the computer to be I - core 5 and I have icore3. So, my question is if I won’t be able to download and install the firmware update, at least by using with this trick can I have multiple samples per track assigned on different steps? I want to get this beauty but this is crucial for me, because only 6 tracks are kind of limited. Great review and thank you very much Loopop!
Thanks! Yes, they've updated the firmware to make my hack obsolete. I recommend finding a friend with a computer that can perform the update and doing it!
Can the Rev/Delay be edited and stored per step/per track? so one can have 6 diff FX algorhythms :D Can trig/chance conditions be set per track as well? What are the LFO destinations? How does one save the samples (or you can load as many as 1GB samples of 1MB)? How to get sample into the Model:S from say an iPhone...ie. recorded in voice memos iOS app? 4give me if i missed these in the vid....didnt hear...so maybe a timepoint, or if u mentioned it just say and i will watch for the 4th time :D
NOTE! Since this video was made Elektron released a firmware update with Sample Locks, so there's no need for my little hack (though it's still cool anyway!). They also reduced the price to $300 instead of $400.
Was just going to applaud you for coming up with a workaround only to read this comment. Nice!
Scored my samples for $200!!! feel like ive already got my moneys worth.

New to this channel, considering buying the Model Samples. Thank you for such a comprehensive overview.
The Model Samples has class compliant USB Audio! That's a great feature for people like myself who enjoy producing on an iPad. Wasn't too interested in this device until I learned that.
I started off writing techno with trackers back in the 90s with an IBM386, and had some trouble explaining to people exactly what and how I was doing what I was doing, aside from "video-game music stuff"
Once I found the term "sample-based sequencer" all I had to do was explain what a sample was...
So I'd describe things a bit differently:
The Model:Samples implements class-compliant USB Audio, which provides lossless audio in a way which "just works" automatically with virtually any software on virtually any computing device from now until the end of time.
@@ToyKeeper no worries an again thanks for the first paragraph ;)
...and I agree with you 100% that class compliant audio is the better way to go (with overbridge as a sugar on top that saves you the trouble of aggregating audio interfaces). I don't know which reviews you're talking about that portray class compliant as being a downgrade, but lack of per track audio streaming is a limitation compared to Digitakt, which, to people who mix on a PC is important.
Literally the Review God. Thank you for another quality video.
Excellent review.
That sample lock hack tho!
That hack was brilliant!
well there is only one loopop. love your content. a lot of people are complaining about the model samples. i think it is a good way to get in the elektron world with the extrodinary sequencer. i am not into elektron gear until now. i always loved the possibilties but the menu diving and double/triple function workflow kept me away from the machines. the model samples could be my first elektron machine.
Thanks! People complain about everything, and this isn’t perfect, but what I think they did brilliantly here is carefully select the performance features that would be most fun to play with and make them accessible
I have both. If you want the true joys of Elektron, start with the digitakt. I just goes way deeper.
Doleegop thats for sure but i am a mpc live user. it goes far beyond the digitakt imo. i only want that sequencer for my nord drum 3p. looks like a perfect match to me.
@@poodlebites69 some people evaluate immediance of instrument much higher than depth.
(Edit) I ended up buying the Circuit as well to replace a synth I didnt like--it's awesome.
I love the actual sound of the Electron machines and the interface on this one seems like even me and my thick head could get into it
they're both great, howa bout dat
Great video, now i understand the difference. Here in Europe the Sample is 440 and digitakt is around 620 Euros. Given the differences i think Model sample should be a bit cheaper.
It should be 350-375 euros
Agree price difference doesn't make a ton of sense when you look at features - but they seem to be making it as something a little different not just a bare bones digitakt
agreed. i think it will be cheaper. the digitakt started at 750€. when the model samples is at 350€ therre will be a lot more people buying it. even if is a different concept/machine i think electribe 2 and drumbrute impact are the competitors.
xXkupsuXx definitely true about competition
I understand people have different requirements. Someone with small budged with only a couple of machines is better off with a used Electribe 2 sampler for 250. 16 Tracks, some level of synth, built in sampler, card slot...like no competition. However i can also see how the Model Sample is attractive. The Elektron workflow, the direct controls, the mighty elektron sequencer. I still paid more for a Digitakt even though i could have a electribe for half a price. But the working with an Electron is such a joy.
Thanks for this!! I'm deciding between the two for use on the road. Cycles is perfect to start, but I'll need to get Digitakt as well sometime.
I really really like the look of this product. Would love a digitakt but the model has a much better chance of making into my house. Great bang for buck. Can’t wait to see what other model offerings they bring out
I'd love to see a proper comparison between the model samples and the electribe sampler.
Yep - as I mention in the video it’s in the same price range as the Red Electribe 2 - I partied ways with mine but I’ve created quite a few extensive videos about it which reflect what it can do as well as attempt to extend it as much as possible...
always the best, I never miss one of your videos introducing us to new gear. Thank you! :-)
Wow. I'm glad I kept watching. Awesome: Sample start work around, you could be very clever and create a kit in one sample.
Informative as always!
Samples won me over! Digitakt frustrates me and Samples is now my backup drum/bass for live gigs.
I am trying to decide between the too. Still think it was a good move, to get rid of the digitakt?
@@Redegard I do! Still have the samples and use it mainly for interesting drum sounds/styles when I'm not using the drums on my OP-1.
The model samples can sample locks. I think there was a firmware update since this review.
Yay, I had been waiting for this review.
Thank you very much for that video!
I would love to see 1010 Blackbox vs digitakt. Or BB vs octatrack.
Хороший сравнительный обзор! Всё понятно, доступно и интересно рассказано и показано. Спасибо!
Hi, on Sample Model can I connect a keystep and play/rec sequences live for each track on separate midi channels?
Yes
Sold. Thanks for another excellent review! :)
Great video! I don't regret having the Digitakt in the studio. *ggg*
Great comparison! Would love to play with either of these machines
Hey, thanks for the video, I’m a Sp404 and Eps user, I use Maschine and Live, but I hesitate between a Digitakt or a model sample to complete my set up with or without My Daw, contrôle my synths, play with my Sp. Old Mpc user I’m really interested by the
Elektron workflow, Plocks, conditional trigs etc...,
Its like an Elektron Digitakt and a Korg Electribe 2 met, fell in love and had a baby. I own both of them!
Very informative! Thanks!
best youtube channel, thank you so much for this!
Thanks so much... I am literally just looking at these two devices.
I think digitakt now has the per track scale length which helps to run polyrhythm however I'm still struggling with he CH.LEN and M.LEN .. not able to figure out it's use. I got it for the track length and scale stuffs .
Or probably the ch.len is the length to play before switch to next pattern in pattern chain mode? But what is max length then?
If you had the first 5 Volcas (inc Sample), a Minilogue, a Monologue, a Behringer Model D, a Keystep and you were recording samples with a Zoom H5N, and your DAW was Ableton 9; which mid range Sampler/Sample player would you choose?:
- Elektron Model:Samples.
- Roland SP404 (Ultra playable Lo-Fi Hipster favourite & direct sampling)
- Something else in this price range I’ve forgotten.
As Digitakt owner, I only wish you could send midi from the audio tracks as an option like the Model:Samples
maybe i missed something regarding sample locks (around 20:00), but it is possible during a sequence to change the sample at any time. for exemple having on step "8" a different sample loaded and played instead of the one currently used on the pad.
indeed they added that feature in a firmware update after this video was made
JEXUS IS BACK!!
All the believers know Jexus has resurrected
@Fernando Mercado That took me a minute to realize. Well played.
Jarrod Charlifue Yes, now go and tell all the unbelievers...!
Could model samples be used with the rk002 smart midi cable? If a sample could be a waveform, and each track can be played via midi, it should work as a poly synth. Sort of similar to how the digitakt does it.
I haven’t tried it, but there’s a good chance it could work
Interesting idea! Could you expand on how that would work?
Did Elektron ever update the firmware to the Digitakt to allow each track to run at a different "scale" (1x, 1/2x, 2x, etc)? Like the Model:Samples can do? I sure hope they updated that, three years after the release of the M:S, haha.
yes
Great explanation, as always. You mentioned an external sequencer, if needed something more sophisticated for MIDI controlling external gear. Any advice what can be used for that? Something with conditional trigs, chance and all that stuff.
wow what an awesome video, solved all my questions
Hi Loopop, does model samples has the trig panning like digitakt? I see only track level panning so far.
You can't do it directly, but you can pan individual trigs, by using velocity levels, set to control the pan (then you can choose weather, to have velocity also control volume, or not).
You can also apply LFO to panning the track.
Hope they add normal per trig panning, in a future update.
If you ever get your hands on a Liven Lofi 12, we need you to cover it up - and even compare it to the Samples
Really interesting machine. But what about all the complaints from users about faulty buttons, breaking up easily?
I'd give my left ball to have this kind of velocity sensitive pads in Digitakt
Maschine mk3 :p is insane as wel
Great video, as ever. Would love to see that LFO quick-assign shortcut on the DT one day. The list ain't fun. Though, if I had my druthers, I'd rather see 'scale' per track on the DT. We could eek a lot more out of 64 steps if we could cut the tempo in 1/2 or 1/4. Here's to hoping they share firmware code and those are just in line to be ported... :)
The Digitakt would be impossible to play in a live environment, whereas this looks super manageable... I'm sold
Please do the analog rtym mk2! :D
Yes!
Snap, had mine about an hour now. Don't worry I have broken off to watch your review.
Is it possible to feed one long sample into a track and change/lock the start point per pad on the Digitakt as well? You showed it as a workaround trick that can be used on the Cycles, but didn't say whether such trick is possible on the Digitakt also.. Cheers!
thanks, really great review as usual!
Samples has now got Sample Locks. That kinda makes them even more similar.
Thanks, I've been waiting for your video. I thought I ended up with a glorified Volca sample but, now I see glorified it really is!
Do they do this in black as i need to be able to tell the mrs I’ve had it for ages.. I think a white one she’ll notice 🤫
Yeah, me too. Its gotta blend or trouble. But I'm lucky cause wifey doesn't come down to the man cave so my mission impossible is getting it from the front door to the mancave without her noticing...
Been there. Good luck mate.
TechtronicMountain its all good I managed to get it passed security.....🤫
I was ready with the "I got it used!" defense (I actually did get it second hand). I got a stern, stink-eye look from her, but that was it.
I know its more a joke, but the clichee and toxic relationship this kind of joke normalizes is not cool. if your partner is like this, solve it or get out.
Loopop is too deep when breaking boxes down. Certified tutoring at it's best.
I'm really torn between this and the cycles....
@@lukegregg5944 The Cycles is cool but just wait until Sonicware releases their Liven XFM... really dope. Still love my Model:Samples and use it nearly every day. So worth it.
start sample is attack?
That first bassline is straight out of The Mash and the Fury
I know this is long after this video was first uploaded, but did I miss the bit on the swing/nudge encoder?
Great video, very understandable!
thanks, great as always loopop!
A question about the Ctrl All function (really awesome) :
So, basically when you start holding the Track button, entering the CtrlAll mode basically, the previous state of the pattern is automatically temporarily saved?
Or you need to save it yourself BEFORE starting to use the CtrAll ?
Thanks!
Do you know if you can create a multitrack sequence using your DAW?
Basically using various MIDI In channels to control individual
tracks/instruments? Love your channel!
Thanks! and yes
sampling time is total 33 secs? or 33secs per track ?
Can a MIDI track on the Model just send out clock to a synth with it’s own seq/arp? Maybe Track 6 is always Clock Out - and the other tracks just play drums/perc?
It probably just sends MIDI clock out regardless of the track - I haven't tried it yet.
This was excatly what I was waiting for!! Thanks A LOT!
I beseech you make a video overview plus tips exploring/explaining the mpc live, pretty pretty please. The OP-1 also deserves your clear and articulate analysis, review, and workflow insights.
I don't have an MPC live unfortunately. OP-1 however I've been thinking of revisiting for a while... will try and find time!
loopop you are a mensch and a gentleman.
Yes.
why no samples solo review? it’s good enough to warrant one
It is - I did things differently - I don’t think there’s any info missing about it here though
Is there any workaround for the lack of a proper envelope?
Amazing comparison as always.
That sample start hack makes this a lot more appealing to me...
Mono samples though! No love for wide claps, or unison. I'm all for limitations, but that's pushing it IMO.
Great review. I really like the model sampler, great for adding some beats to my Modular system. Just got one for € 200,- second hand :)
We want real flexibility.😍
Much love
L.
wow amazing, thanks!
Can u make a indepth video about the digitakt? Great channel you have.
Thanks - check out my Digitakt tips and tricks video - there’s a lot in there!
Can the Rev/Delay be edited and stored per step/per track? so one can have 6 diff FX algorhythms :D
Can trig/chance conditions be set per track as well?
What are the LFO destinations?
How does one save the samples (or you can load as many as 1GB samples of 1MB)?
How to get sample into the Model:S from say an iPhone...ie. recorded in voice memos iOS app?
4give me if i missed these in the vid....didnt hear...so maybe a timepoint, or if u mentioned it just say and i will watch for the 4th time :D
