The Microkorg gets hate proportional to how insanely well it's sold. It's arguably one of the very best selling synths ever and certainly the best selling synth of the last 20 years. That's gonna breed some haters...

The great thing about your channel to me, is this: Some folks will wake up, discovering it's not the machine that makes or breaks a musician. Great machines are the ones that allow your expression to flow. What's terrible for one, is great for another. Wanna know what one of my favorite machines of all time is? Don't laugh! Promise? -Yamaha SU700. I bought one new, when it came out in 99. I worked in kbds/pro audio at Guitar Center in Roseville Michigan at the time. I made so much music on that weird thing, I literally had to turn one entire large dresser drawer into a 3.5" disk storage. I bought 3.5"'s by the case. Before I went to the SU700, I was on the Akai S900, sequenced by various other machines. 🤪😁 Kero over in Canada has my old SU now. He installed a microSD drive. (I think) 😂

I feel a line has been crossed with this episode. I don't even care about the Digitakt but so many do. Now, every machine is free game as the haters start to gather fresh victims to the sacrificial altar of Bad Gear. Even my sacred Rhythm Wolf is howling in terror. What if the sound of non-special audio equipment overflow the ether. ;)

I admit, I'm an Elektron virgin. My first purchase was the Model:Samples based on the strength of Stimming's review. There seems to be a special nature to the Elektron workflow and people who know it inside and out seem to love it for what it is. I haven't familiarized myself with the Model:Samples enough yet to know whether I like that workflow, but I'm pretty sure I do. The M:S is an absolutely amazing machine for its (admittedly discounted) price and you cannot go wrong with buying one for $299. I think it's a damn steal. The thing has a way of making me want to play with it and I often find myself fairly shocked at what it can do. If Elekton's more expensive stuff is as good as it seems, then I think they're probably worth buying. It seems like opinions heavily depend upon whether they like the Elektron workflow or not. I rather like it. It's one of the most intuitive instruments I've ever owned.
True, the M:S is a real bargain
All of the complaints on the BAD GEAR check seemed the same, but "this was like programming a Commodore 64 with boxing gloves on." was a unique lol.
Complaints aside, all my favourite youtubers love this thing, so by transitive property, I love this thing.

The Digitakt is a great machine but I sold mine. Actually, I've bought and sold two. It's not because it's a bad machine, it's because in my setup it was too redundant. I have a MPC One and a TR8s and the Digitakt just wasn't needed. Also, the MPC One can do a lot of stuff that the DT can't. My main gripe about the DT is the lack of timestretch. That said, the DT is an excellent machine and I think the form factor is just about perfect. It's also a hell of a lot easier to learn and use than the Octatrack.

I'm along the same lines. I'm selling my Digitakt because I'm just more comfortable with Impact XT in Studio One with a Presonus ATOM controller. More immediate too as I constantly end up fiddling with the Digitakt to get the sounds I'm after and tend to just lose my creative vision with the song I'm working on because of it.
once again proof that only people too stupid to learn the complexity of these machines are the ones who criticize it. maybe the problem is you. the elektron boxes are much more powerful than you will ever realize

I appreciate this comment. I too have an MPC One and a TR8S as was intrigued by the Digitakt but like you say, there's not a whole lot it can do that the gear I already have can't. Thanks for saving me $800 ;)
This video definitely needed to be made! You never truly understand a piece of gear until you understand it’s flaws. Then the creative process kicks in and you start to figure out ways around those flaws. We need a Bad Gear video now on the Octotrac.

The Elektron workflow will always have its critics, for sure. Their instruments require a bit of patience, but once you get there, it's awesome. I find I don't mind the mono samples, because of the ability to change panning per step (and any setting per step). It beats other samplers hands down with its modulation and trig conditions. Given what some other companies charge for grooveboxes, its price is reasonable, given the quality of the device. I get the hate over the learning curve, and surprising limitations, but frankly they couldn't do everything. It's jumping over to the Elektron way of thinking that leads to "bad gear" quotes. Nice episode!

OP1 next please! Anyways glad to see somebody approaching it with a critical style rather than only trying to justify the massive price. When you can for example buy a midi controller and an ipad and apps that turn it to a music making beast that can do more than a digitakt or op1 and for about half their price you really start to question... Sure these devices have that tactile feel and the aesthetics are on point but these are all computers at the end of the day and a pc/ipad can do everything a digitakt does better for a better price with the right software and midi controllers also you get a device that you can do other stuff besides music! But I also understand why elektron/teenage engineering devices are overpriced after all they appeal to a much smaller audience compared to general computers so if they wanna make money the profit has to be high per unit too.

You looked pretty fleet of fingers zipping around that UI. Looked terrifying to me. I love immediacy, learning curves are not really my bag. It didn't sound to me like anything in that box was particularly special and worth the effort, but I'm always amazed by what you are able to coax out equipment in the music you create for your show. Another great vid!

yeah shoddy build quality is not rally somethin that is typical for Elektron gear. Maybe some sharp edges of the metal but that's about t.

"Nukes and grannies" :) And yeah, after wanting one since they first came out, I bought a used Elektron Analog Four. Wobbly knobs, flat sound, clumsy work-flow etc .... I was expecting a 10 out of Elektron, but now that I've owned one (and sold it,) I would give them a four.

I sold my MPC1000 for one of these and regretted the lost functionality....but really enjoyed the sound quality.
It has a very finished, ready to release kind of sound. Respect.
But I really wasn't having fun with it and needed to move on.

This has been a great episode! The "Eyes Wide Shut" clip. The subject, which is the controversial, Elektron Digitakt. The demonstration that shows that this thing sounds bad-ass. Sure, you have to commit to learning how to operate this magic machine, but that is part of the fun. I don't have one of my own yet, but it is just a matter of time and someone will be needing quick cash on Reverb to get me ordering...

I feel like the Digitakt is insanely overpriced, for what it does/can do. It's now $60 more than the Akai MPC One. It used to be about the same price until everything went up.
Digitakt:
- audio tracks are monophonic
- midi tracks are polyphonic, but you need external hardware (and only 4 notes per track)
- basically a "9-track sequencer" if you think about it-- the audio track (8 sounds, with sample locks, etc), plus 8 four-note midi tracks
- Chance / Probability (HUGE plus)
- mildly confusing screen
- no touch-sensitive pads (same-feel step buttons, as function buttons)
- step / chromatic layout (a little confusing for some)
- no timestretch
- 64mb of sample storage (per project)
- 128 total patterns (per project)
- sampling directly into it
- great effects
- 64-step sequencer
MPC One:
- way more than 64-step sequencer
- drumkits alone, are essentially 128 audio tracks (polyphonic, if you want)
- 128 MIDI tracks (per Sequence / Project)
- 8 linear audio tracks (per Sequence / Project)
- detailed, full-color screen (touch if you want... you don't need to touch it, most of the time)
- touch-sensitive pads (classic 4x4 grid)
- polyphonic sequencing (internally or externally), more than 4 notes
- monophonic sequencing (internally / externally)
- timestretch / looping mode
- 2GB of onboard RAM
- SD card storage (up to 512GB, I think, maybe more)
- sampling directly into it
- built-in plugins (quite nice-sounding!)

- step-sequencing (not as intuitive as Elektron's, of course)
I like Elektron stuff a lot. I own a Model:Samples, which satisfies my cravings for chance/probability sequencing. It has two less tracks than the Digitakt, and no sampling... but, it's only $300. Transferring samples is pretty easy, via a computer. And while I wish the font was a LOT smaller when browsing for samples... (hello Elektron??), it truly does a great job. If you're craving a Digitakt... go straight for the MPC One and save yourself a few bucks. It's totally worth it. And this is coming from a longtime Akai hater. I LOVE my One. Every time I watch videos on the Digitakt, I just don't find it worth the insanely high asking price. It should be $500, not $860. And what it does, it does well.... but... I don't know. It needs some more firmware updates to make it worth the asking price.

I enjoyed your thoughts on this. This is maybe the 10th item I own that you've covered. lol. The Digitakt was my third Elektron box after the Analog 4 and Analog Rytm (both Mk 1). I have zero regrets about buying it even though I would have been fine to just stick with the Rytm. I had several years with the Elektron workflow so it was easy to jump onboard with the Digitakt. It's actually a lot of fun to play both drum boxes together.

The pitch range of the DT is limited to 24 steps in each direction. WTF
@@AudioPilz Did you know that the tempo on the Volca Sample can be set to 10bpm to 600bpm. Korg puts little Easter eggs into each all their gear - it's just a matter of pressing the correct buttons together before powering on.

Great Job! It's without question my favorite instrument in my setup. It just has to be placed in the correct context. Its a sampling drum machine, with an incredible sequencer attached. Don't bother trying to do anything else with it other than maybe sequencing a mono synth. Sample into a daw or an mpc, edit your samples there, and then import them. Its entirely worth the effort. I wish it had some extra effects built in, but that's my only gripe.

The newest OS update gives the DT song mode and time stretching so…
You should check out the Model:Cycles. It's a dumbed down Digitone that has a distinct and very limited audio palette. I still struggle to get it to sound good in my setups.

the cycles rules. it is actually incredibly cheap for it's complex sequencing and performance abilities and the interface is extremely intuitive. you can produce percussion sounds that aren't possible with other drum machines and it's not so limited once you learn how to properly utilize synthesis and sound design techniques, especially once you understand the power of elektron machines is in combining the internal modular capabilities (modulation/p locking/sound locks/retrigs/ctrl all/pattern reload) with the sound sources. the only people that criticize elektron are the people that didnt take the time to properly get to know what they are capable of

I bought it in 2018, with a lot of love and excitement in my heart. It was finally going to be my 'go anywhere, ditch the laptop, MY sampler'. Nope. Couldn't get into it. Could barely get it to make a sound. And I've been making electronic music for over two decades. Watched some videos, read the manual, decided to just dive into it, and nothing. At some point, the Digitakt started to piss me off. Sort of like a malcontented ex: no matter how much attention you pay her/him, it's never enough. Eventually, I returned it to the retailer, even though it actually cost me shipping. Boo. I've since thought about getting it again, but each time I look lovingly at my all software studio, my Akai APC 40 MKII and my classic Roland A-49 controller, and think: oh Digitakt, there is no room for you here. Sad, because the demo tune at 6:05 is a thing of beauty. Excellent video.

Secondly, you could fill a screen of gear nerds complaining about a Fender Strat, so if that's the only benchmark for "bad", then I feel like almost anything can make it into the series.

I personally LOVE my Digitakt and it took me at least a year to *really* have it click. I can come up with ideas faster on my DT than anything else and it's my go-to starting point for all tracks. And a main thing that drew me to it WAS that it was limited... it forces me to try things and avoid "analysis paralysis". It DOES need a version 2 with an extra LFO or two, song mode, parameter slide on trigless trigs, and more filter options. The overdrive also doesn't do much to really crush up sounds. But using single-cycle waveforms, automation of looping/playback direction, polymetric tracks, etc.... it's just so simple and fast to work with (unlike the Octatrack.) Elektron needs to combine the expanded features of the aging Octatrack with the fluidity of the Digi series, and I'd buy it in a second. I don't really think it's too overpriced though for how high quality the design and build are.

Nice vid, thanks - kind of tempted to buy one now! Here's one for a future vid, perhaps: MPC5000...it promises sooo much on paper and yet....plenty of complaints online about it: poorly written/unfinished OS, software bugs, terrible storage logic, random midi glitches, and lots more! Although if you obtain one for the show it will of course work perfectly! ;)

Great episode ! We use the Takt as main sequencer for our live show, it also provides additional sounds, mostly FX ; the great thing about it is the small size and light weight, makes it easy to carry :)

I have long admired Elektron as well, and I have many friends that stand by this piece of kit, but it can be somewhat daunting if you a) don't know the "elektron way." and b) don't use hardware sequencers. It seems like you are treading on dangerous turf, Florian, but you (as always) handled it with grace. Danke!

This was a very good, and fair presentation. I think a lot of us feel inspired by but also frustrated with Elektron.
“The Elektron Way” is actually a thing. I have owned several pieces of Elektron gear, and the only piece I still have is the Analog Heat, which I really love both as a distortion box and stereo analog filter. It is a must for digital synthesizers. I even bring plugin synths out through Analog Heat, or take drum samples I like and resample them through Analog Heat.
I got comfortable enough with Octatrack and this, but couldn’t find a way to make it fun or useful for what I do. I’m just so married to ITB drums now, and have worked for so long at how to make them not sound boring, that whenever I use hardware drum machines now.....its almost lacking for me.

far and away my favorite youtube channel. how does the interface compare to something like Yamaha's QY100? Curious because I pretty much learned all my sequencing off a QY70.

You either really vibe with the elektron work flow or you hate it. Its not for everyone. I like the digitakt but wouldn’t be able to work with say an octa. Especially the mk1. i think for the money it makes a great central control of a 2/3 machine dawless set up altho it can support up to 8 if say you just do dawless jamming for fun. Its also very portable. Its a great grrovebox and drum machine imo as well.

I just put mine up for sale a week ago mainly due to the the lack of song mode, limited voices, 8 tracks and the fact that it's a pretty crappy sampler. Killer drum machine though, but in typical Elektron style they give you an incomplete product so you'll buy their others to fill the gaps they've left 😑

You shouldn't be upset when you find out something you like is bad gear. If you like it, that's because you can make it sound good, and if you can make bad gear sound good, then you're a hell of a musician. :)

Digitakt+Digitone is absolute epic duo for me... Had many grooveboxes in past, but this is completely different planet. Somehow my brain is tuned exactly rhe way like Elektron devs :-)
Yeah, it came to me quite naturally too!
I add an external synth (or two) to the mix, and it's by far the most powerful groovebox experience possible. Small gripes, like pattern mute not sending from takt -> tone and some heavy workarounds required for relatively simple things they could add as features, but comparing it to everything else, it's just so much faster and better.
I Watched till the end. I see you Volca Sample. Is that next on bad gear or better gear??? Keep up the good work!

I love my digitakt but it does take a long time , very long time, to master. I have been using only basic functions so far. and it's really good for sequencing vintage gear. the biggest issue for me now is the rubber coating on the buttons that is starting to degrade and become sticky.
Agreed! Haven't experienced the rubber coating issue (yet). Thanks for posting!
Update! Water and baking soda solution worked wonders. Brush all buttons with an old toothbrush. That got rid of the external gooey degraded rubber layer, the buttons still feel good (the rubber is still mostly preserved) but now they're dry and feel like new.

Alright, I've never had a suggestion, but this one made me think of a REAL piece of bad gear. The Akai MPX8 / MPX16. Without a doubt THE WORST piece of equipment I have, I literally can't give it away.
True that, they're on top of my list but I want a used one that is totally messed up to make it more interesting;)
@@AudioPilz I use the MPX8 to augment the short samples of my OP-1 (and have some vel pads) and it's portable with a powerbank - it's cheap and is missing a bunch, and the start time and sample load time sucks, but I found it's a decent companion for a specific workflow

lol I got both of those samplers. Not the best pieces of gear. I use them to trigger samples and loops.
Yeah, you're right. You either love or hate the Elektron workflow. I tried to learn the octatrack and failed miserably.
Then i tried the Digitakt together with the Digitone, it was better, but still not my cup of tea, so i sold those.
At the moment, i have an Model:Cycles here, but i mostly use it as a drum synth, which is controlled by the DAW, cause it's FM drum engines are just gorgeous!
Cycles is such an interesting instrument!
omg man, the octatrack has a steep learning curve just like this too. I feel like I have to make videos for myself about the things I've discovered so that I could remember them later :-)

Jeremy aka @RedMeansRecording did a whole album called “Soft Music To Do Nothing To” which was a live jam with only the Digitakt, Digitone & Analog Heat & it’s one of my favourite works. I think it & also a lot of Jeremy’s RMR videos as well as the other creators you mentioned do a great job of demonstrating the strengths of Elektron gear being so different to the norm instead of behaving so similarly to common gear edit paradigms. It makes sense that some bounce off it so hard, yet so many end up really digging the creativity it offers.

If the Digitakt had stereo sample playback, then it would definitely be better, but still super limited to what's expected from gear in 2017+
True that but the Elektron guys really like to stick to their concepts
I'm pretty certain that the only reason the Digitakt is mono is because Elektron don't want to cannibalise sales of the Octatrak. I really hate that way of doing things!

If the Digitakt is anything like the Digitone, it's more than worth the price for the fun factor alone, imo. I never thought I'd get along as well with a groovebox as I have with the Digitone. On another note, your jams in these videos are always great fun to listen to, and this is no exception.

I didn't hear back so I watched this and I am impressed. Even though the specs on this sexy black box are toast compared to my 2003 MPC 100 (stereo sampling, 128MB Ram, 32 voice polyphony, 16 tracks- need I say more)- I want to be like you in a black shirt with this cool sounding more modern machine. Drum and bass can sound excellent even in mono (albeit here with stereo outs) and the tight controlled workflow of this beast with high frequency sampling makes a great sound and stands out in the mix. Like you always say, diiferent applications. The MPC 1000 can be a true DAWless DAW with full vocals, lyrics and massive synth leads where as the Digitakt is a master of drum and bass.

I can see both sides here. On one hand this is clearly a highly usable, well sounding instrument that you can do a lot of things with. On the other none of the Elektron instruments work for me, for some reason. Just doesn't click with my meat calculator.

The only real nice thing is the parameter step programming. That's what all my old gear mostly misses. But he made me aware of some cheap newer stuff i should get though.
