Haha, thanks. I was trying my best to find the humor in it. I'm not a mean spirited type of person but like I said in the video, this solo fascinates me. I'm a little bit obsessed with it.
Love that solo, it’s raw, dirty and unpolished. Artistically it’s a beautiful fit, nothing is perfect in life and doesn’t have to be. Thanks for the video!
I play this song when jamming with friends.... man I LOVE that solo!!! Totally flips the song on it’s head and turns it into something different.... ☺️😆
Hearing you describe the song before revealing it, I absolutely knew exactly what was coming! I've always loved the solo cause it was so out of place and insane. Great video again!
"Heat Of The Moment" - Asia "Knockin' At Your Back Door" - Deep Purple "Whiskey In The Sand" - Dwight Bailey As a lifelong guitar player, these were truly WTF moments...😊 Guess I'll add this one to the list.
Agree about Knocking at your Back Door. Blackmore’s soloing on the whole Perfect Strangers album is just way off his usual standard. It’s so lame I have problems listening to this album from my favourite band and guitarist. If only Blackmore had been on form during that reunion.
@@stephenfiore9960 If you really want to get your mind blown, type Dwight Bailey into RUclips search engine. His latest single, "The Robot Monster", is a real banger... With another "memorable" solo
I dunno, I watched this last night but it's sticking with me. This is legitimately one of my favourite solos. Before got and listened to their albums I'd only ever heard the video edit of the song, which only has a piano solo and just a taste of the guitar getting rowdy before the piano steps up again. When I put "Five Days in July" (album is 'July', song is "May' for anyone unfamiliar) and and this solo arrived I was really blown away. I was so familiar with the nurtured, polite version of the song that it caught me off guard. I had a view of Blue Rodeo as these radio friendly, clean cut, guys with polished tunes. Hearing that solo come along showed me there was something edgier to them than what was on the video channels and radio. It told me there was a Greg's Lennon to Jim's McCartney. (As an aside, "Diamond Mine" got this treatment as well.) Think of "Getting Better" by the Beatles. Paul sings "got to admit it's getting better, a little better all the time!" while John sings back "it can't get no worse!" John could have agreed, that's the expected thing. Where's the fun in that? I love the roughness, the rawness, the recklessness, the sheer inappropriateness. Greg probably could have played something slicker, Jim probably could have played some thing slicker, Glenn (the drummer) definitely could have played something slicker (as he does on 'Falling Down Blue'). It's a wonderful thing to play like Gilmour or Knopfler - something like the of "Tunnel of Love" could have been amazing - but sometimes Neil Young is what you need to get the job done.
I LOVE this solo, idk what it is but you can feel the soul through it. Reminds me of the solo from The Band - Harvest King from the Woodstock sessions. Simple, messy, full of emotion.
It's like the guitarist heard fellow Canadian Neil Young's solo to Cortez the Killer once and thought about it six months later and thought "I can do that"
Ha, this was fun! I suspected what song you were talking about about a minute in! I love soloing over this song, and I sound way worse than Greg, but it’s so much fun! The Live at Massey Hall version of this song, Colin Kripps ( not sure on spelling) has an entirely different take. I think they are both amazing, but for different reasons.
An oddity for sure! But it has a certain charm to it too. Totally unexpected within the context of the song. A surprise! I particularly liked your playing on it.
Great video! Excellent analysis and I agree with you 100%. The first time I heard this solo I immediately thought "??? WTF is this? This doesn't sound good at all. What was Blue Rodeo thinking?" I've never heard anyone ever discuss it like you have. For a famous, well-established band with a long track record of making good records over the years ----- how could they ever allow this solo to pass? LOL thanks Kelly, your comments are extremely accurate. This solo is so bad it's good --- for teaching guitar players about bad guitar solos!!
So, I was searching videos on 50’s wiring vs modern wiring for Les Paul guitars and for some reason this video popped up. And for some reason I watched it (maybe the pseudo-clickbait title). Either way, I absolutely adored the solo because it IS so bad that it’s brilliant IMO. I am a professional guitarist, and I occasionally play shows with friends for fun. One of those friends plays very similarly to this guitarist on this solo, and I just let him take as many solos as possible every time I play with him, because it is endlessly entertaining to me. I just yell encouragement to him and chuckle on the inside, cuz I love the guy’s enthusiasm.
Hey K.D., you have me watching your vidio`s daily lately and I find them both fun and a great way for a guitarist of 40 years now. My students come to me for a tune they wanna learn and there are things I just plain forgot , and sometimes were playing different or even wrong! Your energy is contagious and I always come out with a new set of ears or a new chord shape, single note on a riff, etc. Keep up the great content man!! You surely have a subscriber in me !!
It is definitely a memorable solo. Some of the live versions are better executed (he avoids the pinched harmonics altogether), which seems odd for a studio recording. As you said, what were they thinking during the post-recording production? In fairness, wiki says that the whole album was recorded on Greg's farm and was intended only to serve as demos. Being a big Neil Young fan, I am not adverse to the style of solo, but it could perhaps have been executed better. But if it had, would you be dedicating a video talking about it? Memorable!
so funny while you were building the premise I was thinking of this song. The solo in this song has divided my whole family lol. My wife who's not a musician loves it. My mom hates it and thinks it ruins a beautiful song. My brother is in different to it. My sister in law dislikes it. My dad is indifferent. I like the Greg just let it all hang out. Sometimes I feel like " Okay buddy - you could've reigned it in a little there" and many other times I really enjoy it. Ultimately it's a win, because it's heartfelt and provoking. Great video btw
I feel somewhat the same way. It's a mood type of solo. Sometimes if I'm in the right mood, I kind of enjoy it. Other times I just shake my head and wonder just what in the hell they were thinking, especially on THAT track. It's such a laid back song.
I've always preferred Blue Rodeo over the Hip. Not sure why. Cuddy can bring you to tears with his vocals and songwriting. Both bands are great but BR just hits me in the feels more. Great video. I also wanted to comment on the fact that you are one of the only Tubers who mod a guitar and ACTUALLY USE IT. That custom job is a beauty and sounds awesome. I've got a modded Squire Bullet with a JB humbucker and Wilkinson hot pups in the neck and middle just like your setup and I LOVE it. Plays metal, punk, rock. Such a versatile beast. Keep up the great work, man. Looking forward to more videos! 🤘
I agree that it’s a big hairy mess, but for some reason it fits. I’ve really grown to like it, just seems like something you’d expect from a gritty character like Greg. I can’t imagine the song without it.
Well Kelly, I see it's been two years since you posted this video and asked - WELL NOW, WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THAT? (I just happened to stumble on to this video today and it caught my attention). My answer and most humble opinion are as follows: 1. I like it; or wait, no; I mean I love it!!! 2. I think the artist is keeping it real. 3. I understand your perspective and do not disagree in the least; but to add to the things you pointed out - I can feel a driven passion in the solo, and I can somehow say it does fit even though it doesn't fit. Now I know that doesn't make much sense, but that's my best way of describing my take on that solo performance. Just thought I'd say so my brother and friend, since you asked. You take care, and as always YAWEH BLESS!!! Update: well a couple hours have passed since I typed the text that precedes this sentence and here out. I've since listened to the song in its entirety (made my eyes well up with tears, really hit home). The solo fits perfect in my opinion; ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!! AGAIN, MY TAKE ON SUBJECT: It's all about raw passion and love: the relationship, the song, the girl, the guy, the solo!!! I have no other way to express my soul on this one. THANK YOU FOR SHARING WITH US, AND THANK YOU FOR TURNING ME ON TO THAT ONE.
And it is a nice song. Perhaps craft a better solo over that outro section. I make take that on as a little project. See if I can sound any better., lol. Enjoy!
HAHA! I have to commend you on your determination to be accurate. I find it difficult to learn something that I don't "dig" but you definitely aced it! 😆
Thank you for introducing me to Blue Rodeo and indeed, this song. I really love it. The guitar playing makes you sit up and take notice and that's for sure, matey! Have to say, though, that I rather enjoyed it. It's clearly an 'anti-guitar-solo', the type of which gives plonkers like me (who are stuck at intermediate level on guitar) a bit of hope. I was struck by how the guitarist went all out to break the rules of what musicians, producers, listeners might be expecting in the solo. I think that's great. To hell with convention! If the solo was a wine I'd say that I was getting 'notes' of the soloing of Neil Finn of Crowded House and Patterson Hood of Drive By Truckers - 2 of my favourite players. A nice mix of those two in this one. Long live the 'anti-solo', I say! That guitar player was clearly saying something, making a statement, if you will. Interesting trying to figure that one out... Nice one again, KDA. Ciao for now - PT x
I thought this would be "Big Brother and the Holding Company"'s excruciating "Summertime", where ambition and ability just don't align, but this was ...wow...great video, though and kudos for working out the solo.
Yeah.... that was harsh to listen to. Sounded like a bad day at Guitar Center. Wow. I really was not expecting it to be like what you described , but it literally was "exactly" how you described it. I don't ever want to hear that again. Jeez !😱
I could believe that the "out of the box" vibe was intentional, but that combined with repeating certain notes way too many times, and (in places) horrible technique, (?) to do all of that intentionally seems far fetched, to say the least. As you noted, it's a head scratcher that no one in the whole, production effort raised enough concern to fix the broken parts of that solo (?)
Clean the pinch harmonics and roll off the Vol before the jarring swells if that's what he was going for ? I could play it straight and make it sound good at the least !!
Haha. I listen to the song 2 nights ago and totally forgot about the lead part. Once it started I said to myself I wonder if anyone tried to figure out the riff. Then this popped up today. Well great job of figuring it out. I figured if you took the time to learn it you have every right to have an opinion on it. Good or bad. 😂
That entire song really sticks out on that album. I always assumed they were smoking piles of weed. You can practically smell it when listening to that solo.
My favorite intentionally bad guitar solo is from "Cover Of The Rolling Stone," by Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show. But as for this one, I was thinking that I'd heard worse...until we got to the pinch harmonics.
heat of the moment wins worst solo that I can think of. it's got this "I need to go to the pub now and I will not do another take tomorrow as i can't be bothered" feel. you have way too much time to learn this, haha.
When I read the title to this video, Blue Rodeo immediately popped into my head! I have a theory that the guitarist just discovered pinch harmonics and thought they sounded so cool. I love the song, but have to skip as soon as the solo starts to lose it. I believe it is definitely an objectively bad solo.
Hey Kelly, That really was one weird guitar solo thing. Is the band known to have an odd sense of humor...maybe it was suppose to be funny or ironic in a otherwise gentle song...? Or, maybe the guitarist was having a minor stroke during the recording...? It really would be interesting to know what they were thinking when they decided to use that in this song, (or any song for that matter). One thing's for sure...it was hilarious watching you while you listened to it with us...almost like it was painful for you...hehehe lmao!
I don't think it was a sense of humor thing. They're a pretty serious bunch and this song is one of their biggest hits. It's an obviously very well written song that they must have known would be a big hit. To throw in this jarring solo at the end of it makes little sense, at least to me.
I love everything in the solo other than the pinch harmonics. I think all of the bends and such sound beautiful but my favourite Neil young song is Cortez the killer and this solo is very reminiscent of that
He went into a Neil Young thing. It's kind of an off solo that's a little heavy, but for some odd reason, I get the jazz aspect of the guitar going in a different sound, a very slow methodical solo that turns chaotic when you see Neil Young perform Rocking In The Free World and he does his solo, kind of like that.
While describing the song (love song with a jarring end guitar solo), I thought you were going to say 'Goodbye to Love' by The Carpenters. But you are right, this one is... weird. Good job playing it, though!
Thanks Luis! Had fun with it. Missed the timing of one phrase near the end, but overall got it pretty close I think. Nailing the pinch harmonics (or in this case, NOT nailing them) wasn't as hard as I thought. Just pick in a spot where no harmonic exists. That was the key.
I really like the beginning of the solo. Then it goes from love to angry, then from angry to angry confused 🤔 Kinda sounds like some bullsh*t I would come up with. Lol 😁 But you would be correct, it's intriguing 🤔 But it does leave you with the wtf was that all about?🤨😁
Your solo was much easier on the ears. I've always been baffled by this one. That said, I'd love to hear it redone but "cleaned up" a little to see what it could have been.
This solo is a clear tribute to Neil Young..."they met in a hurricane " (like a hurricane) I absolutely love it, but understand that it's a strange choice. That's what makes it brilliant. If it was as expected, we wouldn't be chatting about it. As for Andy Summers, he has always been a painter, and almost never solos. Kind of like the Edge, but waaaaay better.
You could do unknown solo's videos. There are some great ones out there. Bob Segarini's Goodbye LA has a great solo & Teenage Head Let's Shake had a simple but to the point solo.
Congrats for tackling such an out of control solo. If I were to judge honestly, I'd have to say it sounds like something I might have played when I don't really feel into it and my mind is unwillingly wandering someplace else. I'm surprised it's on record, but I'm pretty sure these things happen to everyone trying to play. I won't say it's a good solo, certainly not "most awesome" in any way, but I can respect the effort.
Ha! I finally had to bite on this video Kelly….. it started of pleasant enough, nice country vibe …. THEN….. it went to heck… and kept getting worse , the screeching unison bends, no melody, horrific pinch harmonics, Jeez ….. that’s pretty ragged. But of course- one man’s trash is another’s treasure, what the heck do I know ?
Love Bue Rodeo and over the years this song made me question the quality of my guitar listening ears. Now when I hear it I'll be thing of your humorous critique.
I know! I think it's so bad that it's good. At least I'm still trying to convince myself of that fact. It's grown on me over the past few days. I mean, it's still bad, but it has a certain charm to it somehow.
Kelly, I found this video/song mesmerizing: the long buildup set up expectations that were more than met when we finally hear the original and your clone. As others have said, your facial expressions and body language upon playing the original are priceless. I'm guessing your experience as a fine-dining waiter have honed your communication skills. BTW, you somehow have been able to match the tone of this and all the solos you've done unbelievably. I too have BIAS FX 2 and you're much better at tone matching than I am. I even have the Elite version, which goes to show you that when it comes to tone, without the fingers even the greatest tools (amps, effects, software, etc.) aren't enough.
I thought I'd suggest Poisons' Unskinny Bop as a dishonourable mention? But that was pretty terrible.. like the last time I recorded my guitar playing..
First thing that comes to mind is that he was wasted when he played it as a joke and that it then either accidentally got left in, or someone intentionally left it in as a joke.
Sounds like the first few bars were intended to go over a planned fade & after that he just kept going, basically arseing around for a laugh. And for some reason when they mixed it, they decided not to do the fade.
Hahaha😄 Thank you!! I had so much fun watching this video. And I'm sorry (not really sorry) but you failed to nail all the pinch harmonics😏 They didn't sound half as bad as the original😆
Ha your version actually sounded better! Up to a point and then everything went to hell. I wanna hear your polished version of what you think it should be!
The studio version was absolutely horrendous and like you said the first 30 seconds aren't so bad. Honestly I was digging it but theeeen.... Yeah. Your take was actually pretty interesting because I really liked the tone and I could kind of understand what the soloist was trying to do, despite the jarring notes, it just seems like he just executed it really poorly. Clean it up and take out the excessive pinch harmonics and it has potential to be a great solo that builds up to an awesome outro that you could fade out on. Would you be interested in making a video doing your own take on how you think it should have been? I think it'd be really cool to hear a more 'proper' solo with no mistakes and some expression.
I like blue rodeo, but I don't think they have the chops for good solos. The recording sounded like a one take run to me, but more than the solo just being wonky, I can't stand the feedback when he hits those low notes at the end. It's an offense that it wasn't rerecorded imo.
Bad, but still not as bad as the worst solo, by a band with also one of the best -- Van Halen. The worst is Dreams. While of course well played, it's a horrid monstrosity with no place in that song or in any song. The best is Feel Your Love Tonight; a true masterpiece that is perfectly executed and perfectly melodic and harmonic.
Your facial expressions while listening to the solo were gold! lol
Haha, thanks. I was trying my best to find the humor in it. I'm not a mean spirited type of person but like I said in the video, this solo fascinates me. I'm a little bit obsessed with it.

heat of the moment wins worst solo that I can think of. it's got this "I need to go to the pub now and I will not do another take tomorrow as i can't be bothered" feel. you have way too much time to learn this, haha.
Thanks bro, You played it way to well😛
Hey, I like in the heat of the moment solo!
Priceless
After the first set of pinched harmonics i could hear the Neil Young feel kick in.
OMG I laughed so loud my wife thought I was choking...btw I love Blue Rodeo
Thanks man. I love Blue Rodeo as well. Fantastic band.
You are right. They were grooving and he starting playing another song. Maybe, he forgot how to play during the song.
Haha.. Damn ineesting topic. And I do agree...is this solo intentional crappy or what? Me neither can decide what to think on that one
I just cracked it. They met in a hurricane, this was the on coming storm.
Good grief Speechless….. funny stuff !!!
Hey Kelly,
That really was one weird guitar solo thing.
@@KellyDeanAllenGuitar
A serious bunch...yeah that makes it even worse...
Reminds of Joe's Garage from the other day... "TURN THAT DOWN...!!! "
I love everything in the solo other than the pinch harmonics. I think all of the bends and such sound beautiful but my favourite Neil young song is Cortez the killer and this solo is very reminiscent of that
you should do one of ron asheton's solos from the stooges...they're kind of bad, but great in context.
I’m speechless
I really like the beginning of the solo.
Then it goes from love to angry, then from angry to angry confused 🤔
Kinda sounds like some bullsh*t I would come up with. Lol 😁
But you would be correct, it's intriguing 🤔
But it does leave you with the wtf was that all about?🤨😁
Your solo was much easier on the ears. I've always been baffled by this one. That said, I'd love to hear it redone but "cleaned up" a little to see what it could have been.
I don’t mind it. I would say it’s a bit loud in the mix.
Hahaha bro you killing me 😂😂😂
I liked it when you played it.
Great song. Good solo, bud bad played.
I respectfully suggest you listen to the band that Dwight Yokam fronted in 'Slingblade'...That's some best/worst stuff of all time 😂😂🤘🤘
Love Blue Rodeo. I forgot that band.
best facial expressions come while listening to the worst solos it seems :D
This solo is a clear tribute to Neil Young..."they met in a hurricane " (like a hurricane) I absolutely love it, but understand that it's a strange choice. That's what makes it brilliant. If it was as expected, we wouldn't be chatting about it.
As for Andy Summers, he has always been a painter, and almost never solos. Kind of like the Edge, but waaaaay better.
You could do unknown solo's videos. There are some great ones out there. Bob Segarini's Goodbye LA has a great solo & Teenage Head Let's Shake had a simple but to the point solo.
Teenage Head! Loved those guys.
I have played solos that sounded similar - drunk outta my mind & flat on my back. Oh well... never would have let it stay a recording tho.
Respectfully disagree about Richards in general -- his leads on Sympathy for thr Devil, fantastic stuff.
Something about it i really lik
I know! I think it's so bad that it's good. At least I'm still trying to convince myself of that fact. It's grown on me over the past few days. I mean, it's still bad, but it has a certain charm to it somehow.
The double stops a few seconds into the solo just come out of bloody nowhere. That is my favorite part
Oh man... oh man
I LOVE it! I think it’s a great guitar solo. However, I am drunk.
Wow i have hope now at least
First thing that comes to mind is that he was wasted when he played it as a joke and that it then either accidentally got left in, or someone intentionally left it in as a joke.
Like Neil Young playing a solo to Riders On The Storm.
Pffff, it's my solo !
Sounds like the first few bars were intended to go over a planned fade & after that he just kept going, basically arseing around for a laugh. And for some reason when they mixed it, they decided not to do the fade.
I agree. That's what it sounds like.
Must admit to never hearing this band before, And i sure don't wanna hear this solo/noodling mess again.
What guitar is that?
That is some real shit
Ah hell to da nah naz! Are you sure that's not Lil Wayne recording that solo lol!
I’d have to say drunk and stoned. 😵💫
That....was.....painful
Pure Neil Young hyperbole! Genius!
That's a damn fine idea actually. Gonna give that some thought.
I like blue rodeo, but I don't think they have the chops for good solos. The recording sounded like a one take run to me, but more than the solo just being wonky, I can't stand the feedback when he hits those low notes at the end. It's an offense that it wasn't rerecorded imo.
You'd have to go a long way to beat Neil Innes's guitar solo on 'Canyons of your mind' by Bonzo Dog Do Da Band. Brilliantly awful and wholly intended
It definitely sounds drunk. It, shall we say, expresses emotional distress. Intentional? Who can say?
