  • A supercut of the top 25 greatest guitar solos of all time according to Guitar World magazine. Having recently completed learning and playing the entire list of 100, I figured that I would make a video concentrating on the top 25 from the list.
    Hope you like it!
Edit: after just sitting down and watching my own video, something is bothering me and I have to clear it up.
I've since bought a new DSLR camera for recording and am in the process of learning how to use it. the vast majority of these were recording on an old HTC smartphone at 24FPS. my video editor of choice defaulted to an output of 60FPS. That was a problem. when hand motion, (or any motion really) got too fast, my videos got choppy and sometimes blurry, because of the conversion from 24fps to 60fps.
a problem that I have recently rectified and it's no longer an issue.
apologies for that. it's only taken me two years to figure out how to record guitar. Christ!
Case in point. I recently recorded Tornado of souls by Marty Friedman and Megadeth with my new camera at 60fps. • TORNADO OF SOULS - Meg...
it's one of the hardest and fastest solos that I've ever played. no motion blur.
it took a comment on Reddit just a few weeks ago telling me to start recording at 60 fps to get rid of the blur. I honestly had no idea. I just set up the camera in front of me, press record and play my guitar. didn't know one thing about FPS, ISO settings, and the like.
it's something that's always bothered me and I didn't know how to fix it because I'm old and dumb to such things. especially when I get the odd (but rare) comment that I'm speeding up my videos. Nothing irritates me more. To be absolutely clear....I do no such thing. I just really suck at video recording and editing.
but hopefully no more. New camera, new laptop, new video editing software, all in the past three weeks. learning how to properly use it all going forward. if there's one thing with regards to my channel that I am extremely dissatisfied with, it's my video making and editing skills. they're not very good. I'm working on getting better.
    Cheers, Kelly

i don't know anybody that could do what you accomplished. there are plenty of great guitarists in the world, but taking on a list like this and nailing it, with all the diverse styles is just something i'm doubtful even the greatest players could pull off. i don't suspect trickery at all...just hard work. skill, a great ear for music, and an incredible memory. way to go!

Cheers mate, and thanks! Certainly no trickery involved. Took me over two years to learn them all (the whole hundred). A lot of time and effort put into it. Back when I did this project, I wouldn't have even known how to fake something, haha. You know, video edits and whatnot. Didn't know how to do it.

This is incredible. I only learned of your project a couple of days ago, when you had finished it. For the solos I'm familiar with, you absolutely nailed them. Not just note-for-note, but the feels too. Really good resource for guitarists, with the simple framing of fretboard and picking. I've only watched a few of the individual videos, but it's great to hear your in depth thoughts on each one. Great job!

Absolutely stellar playing Kelly Dean! ❤❤👍👍🎸🎸Just watched this video and once again in amazement. Each one of the solos was brilliant playing, there were definitely some standouts for me -including heartbreaker, Hotel California, all along the watchtower, cliffs of Dover, eruption , comfortably numb and Time, finger picking sultans of swing! Bohemian Rhapsody Its one thing to just be able to play the notes of a solo, but you put your heart and soul into it and capture all the subtleties of a particular solo such as spot on vibrato, bends , note and phrase intervals, and the most elusive thing of all which is in my opinion the emotion of the original artist Inspired playing Kelly !

Also, it amazes me how the 50+ year old classic solos from Hendrix, Page, Clapton, Gilmour, Beck, Blackmore, Duane Allman and even Chuck Berry just continue to astound with their melody, phrasing, taste, balls, emotion and ingenuity. Then you’d have to add in Iommi, Mick Taylor, Billy Gibbons, Montrose, Terri Kath, Skunk Baxter, Michael Schenker, Joe Perry, Skynyrd dudes, Frampton and on and on before you even get to the VH era.

Been following since the 80s-ish on reddit. So stoked to see you make it man. Making me want to try this myself it seems like you grew a lot as a player in the process. Also happy to see another "bad form" thumb placement dude still shredding. Mayer, Frusciante and Hendrix taught me to play that way and some of the more proper shred songs always seemed out of reach because of that to me.

Speed is unfortunately something that can't be taught. It's takes time and practice. I do find that muscle memory helps though. Wonderful playing by you but too much tasteless Heavy Metal in there for me instead of the more soulful solos I grew up with in the 60s and 70s. That Allen Collins one was so basic and utterly boring and Stairway To Heaven “the winner” is unexceptional. Page was the understudy to Jeff Beck in the Yardbirds and that’s where he stays in my mind. A strange mix in that choice by the magazine as though the “judges” had a very limited knowledge of their subject.
