Non-rigid open-mindedness is: open your eyes, and do it the exact correct way! Lol~
Also, I may have a problem - I tried wiggling my fretting hand fingers, and I couldn’t wiggle then nearly as fast as my picking hand fingers. I’m not keen on switching handedness at 60.
Overall, some great advise. I'm currently considering going from 9's to 8's. Cheers~

I use a 3mm jazz pick. I can’t get along with a flexible pick, mits just not accurate enough. I pick very lightly and movements are very minimal that way so it’s very efficient .

    • @IshredGuitar
      @IshredGuitar 4 месяца назад +1

I concur! I agree also with Johnsomani as well. I too use 3mm Jim Dunlap USA 205 jazz picks. I use to use the JD 3mm Deep Purple jazz picks, but the USA 205 are just lighting smooth and fast due to their slightly round tip. I still like the deep purples though, Nick the psychologist on the movie "Metal Lords" puts this issue in perspective perfectly explaining the physics behind this pick issue.

“Slow is smooth, smooth is fast” has its origins in the military and law enforcement circles. Most people heard it first in the movie Shooter, with Mark Walberg as a marine sniper. The Navy SEALs use it all the time. Better than spraying bullets everywhere, take the time, aim and maximize your effectiveness and efficiency. It's perfect for what you are discussing. I've been trying to go faster in my practice and often find my teeth gritted and my hand hurting. Thanks for this lesson.

I don’t necessarily disagree with you but what is your reasoning?

    • @IshredGuitar
      @IshredGuitar 4 месяца назад +15

Any guitar exercise you do will only calibrate your brain to hand signals, so there's literally no bad guitar technique or bad exercise. Just like I tell new shredders hold the pick the way it feels comfortable to you. the secret is in the attack, you have to alternate pick super lightly and soft, and you must relax your left hand. Telling someone their holding the pick wrong is horrible advise just as telling them "chromatic exercise is not good is bad advise, its all about your left hand fingers moving and responding when your brain ask them to do so, in conclusion, human beings master things and techniques differently, they always have and always will. Some pick it up quickly and some never can pick it up. Sadly some players that teach guitar believe everyone can learn to play at high levels, not true! 40 years playing guitar and I've opened for large acts. Sorry to inform but some will never get it! It takes a deep deep passion and years of commitment.

As always Tom this is an incredible lesson with legit golden advice. As a race car engineer I connected to the track ideology instantly. Playing guitar is a LOT similar to trying to go fast around the track. You need to understand the limitations, isolate them, and drill out these isolated limitations till they're ironed out to make a cohesive, well functioning machine.
BTW Swedish Shred Secrets is truly a godsend, I am blown away by my progress. I'm able to play Yngwie phrases effortlessly, which just a few months ago I was convinced I'll never be able to do in my life. This is the best feeling in the world.

So well put! Id rather learn how to play melodic phrases that are pleasing to the soul than just shredding a flurry of notes with no meaning. Thats like learning how to be an eloquent speaker that delivers a message that will change people's lives as opposed to learning to talk as fast as possible and ramble on like an auctioneer and leave people emotionally drained and confused when he's done...... " SOLD"!!! if its going to be fast at least make it melodic and sound like its intelligent!

  • @anightmare2remember

Probably the best advice “use lighter string gauge” I was so stubborn using 10’s on my PRS custom 24 for years. I’ve been using 9’s for 6 months now, my left hand is so relaxed, it took some time ny right hand to adjust. Vibratos are so important for me, it’s so much easier.
Tom,I wonder if a set of 8-38 would make my overall playing more easier. I saw an interview of Mateus Asato on Rick Beato where they talk about super light string gauges.

    • @omnamahshivaya6299

I like to use sharpie picks and I'm tuned half a step down on a Schecter C7 SLS Elite MultiScale..
Using 10-48+62 is perfect for me, the strings are too floppy when I use 9-46 for example. Even 9.5's didn't work.
I get better accuracy and attack with a sharpie pick but I need that perfect string tension.. Can take lots of experimentation to find an ideal setup..

Only time you should be playing slow is until you know the notes in the riff, and which finger presses them. Then try and get it up to speed, but concentrate on making it as effortless as possible. This foes mean relaxing the muscles and figuring out which ones to use and what position to have your body, arms, shoulder, and hands in. This is why i like vs. they work better for my body, and they work best in the classical position in between your leg.

Good reminder video... I know what I need to do, but often stray away because of boredom or laziness. I can play many Yngwie/Alcatraz solos correct. I can even play the separate licks up to speed. What I'm struggling with is connecting the licks together at full speed. I know I need to practice on the movements in between. Maybe just play a couple of notes of the first luck and a couple of notes on the following one, and try to glue it all together... But it's not easy....

I always enjoy watching your videos. The first song I ever learned how to shred on when I was first starting out years and years ago, I go back to playing this every now and then. Actually its a combination of two songs I've mished mashed together. The old cartoon Woody Woodpecker, the intro to that where you mimic Woodys voice followed by the swing loose feel of the rest of the song. For the ending of the song, The 3 stooges, I use the last few bars of the intro title. So mimicking Woody voice with arpeggio phrasing, the swing feel and incorporating another song has always been a fun exercise that I incorporate into my playing. I come back to this and play it from time to time. It taught me precision, speed, swing, and integration in all of one exercise. Maybe somebody might find this info useful. Try it and see.

could I toss this "Peak Yngwie" ditty in for a video suggestion? It's got everything: Spinal Tap props, mismatched lead singers & Yngwie's best solo ever because he must've snorted all the cocaine. As a bonus, this is Yngwie before donuts, big wigs & the worst facial known to mankind!

Great tips. Best I've heard about playing fast.
What about scallops. Does it help with speed ? ❤❤ Thanks so much. I might have to buy your course. ❤

At the 14 minute mark on picking, you sort of scuffed it. Not only did you not explain what was different in your picking, you cut from camera angles, which doesn't allow the viewer to see what notes you started on, thus it's almost impossible to see what you are doing. I know what you did, but. . . I share not to tease or hate, but more so, so you are aware because I do believe you are trying to help so kudo's to that.

Funny, I've always found a passion for motorsports-speed and curves...as a guitarist. Also as a man, I wondered if it was the flows and curves of a woman, guitar, car, road/track or the way music has movement. I do believe that there is a psychological connection between humans and the excitement of motion.

The power of shred is in your sword arm the faster you can swing the faster you can play notes...your shield arm will catch up very quickly...i play super fast and im totally relaxed with little effort my dad listenning to me is how do you move so fast...i said the holy trinity of picking elbow...wrist and the holy grail your thumb and forefinger...all 3 combine will generate sonic speeds with little movement and be conscious of how a string feels against a pick...i use a super thick pick so there is no reflection and i only move just enough to strick a string and keep the most minimal movement

You want to try to play pieces of music Fretted the same way whoever wrote the piece played it. You also need to take into account the players technique and your own. If i was learning cliffs of dover by Eric Johnson he uses upward pickslanting (Troy Grady's channel talks about pickslanting) the way he holds the pick in conjunction with the pick being at an upward angle causes him to alternate pick if it ends on an up stroke and sweep if it ends on a downstroke. My technique is the opposite downstroke alternate picking and upstroke sweeping that is the default while you can work on both I would have to fret cliffs of Dover in a whole different way to get it to work with my technique.

Playing slow will not teach you to play fast. Period. Playing slow might help you learn licks, think about fingering, etc, but biomechanically? Neurologically? They're completely different. If you can't play 16ths at 160BPM playing a solo or scales at 25% or 50% speed will NEVER allow you to play it at full speed. If you watch people play the same thing at 50% and 100% their picking mechanics usually change completely -- and playing something over and over slow WILL. NOT. TEACH YOU. TO PLAY. IT. FAST.

Right, classical musicians have been doing it wrong for hundreds of years and none of them can play fast... because Troy Grady or something. 🤣

@@monsterram6617 for one, that's exactly how you are taught to play tremolo on classical guitar. You demonstrate you have an understanding of the movement and then play faster than you can cleanly in bursts and work on cleaning up the motions. Second, a closer example would be fast bowed sections on the violin. If you want to see a deconstruction of that look at TwoSet's video on "the world's fastest violinist" and they talk about the slow->fast thing

@@austinyun Finding a few outliers in a sea of information isn't insight or truth; it's cherry picking. But you do you, and play fast until you're blue in the face with hope that some day you'll play with accuracy, consistency, and quality tone. Just realize that's what it is: hope. Hope that you're going to get it right with luck. What ends up happening is that the person will play a line 20 times with mistakes and then, by chance, play it decent once and think they've nailed it. This is not how to train or build good habits. It's actually the opposite. This way builds *bad* habits by ingraining mistakes into your muscle memory which are much more difficult to remove than building good habits in the first place.
There's a saying in classical music that goes something like, "If you can play it slow, you can play it fast". And it's true. Conversely, take 100 guitar players who want to "shred" and their technique will be littered with inconsistencies and they will struggle to play the piece slow without errors. And it's because they are trying to play faster than their hands are comfortable moving. This is usually accompanied by excess muscular tension - another byproduct of _trying_ to play fast vs playing with precision regardless of the tempo or subdivision.
So yeah, there's millions of musicians out there who will tell you what I'm telling you, and about 5 who say the opposite. Btw, I can play fast and accurate and it didn't come from forcing a square peg into a round hole. It came from developing good technique by focusing on consistent quality; not speed. And for a long period of time too; years in fact.
I'm also a professional musician that plays live about 80 shows a year (2x1.5 hour sets) and I can tell you right now that you will not be able to play fast with accuracy and consistency live unless you really put in the time to build good habits. This is the ultimate test and really, the gold standard. If you can't play whatever perfect out of a dead sleep at 3am... you don't have it down. And playing fast with hope of getting lucky will never get you there. Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast. That is the way.
      Good luck.

I would say it's more logical to practice licks slow at 3NPS and then build your speed up to a super fast 7NPS shred speed.

Your RUclips videos and Swedish shred course has help me improve so much. I’ve been doing Troy Grady’s course as well to get my picking dialed in. That has led me here to focus more on Yngwie’s style. I actually practice now rather than just play without improving.

My issue is definitely tension in my fret hand. To heavy on the strings. I gotta work on that.
