Well done Gajan ❤ exellent overall picture. Leica is not for masses and its philosophy is quality and not quantity. My Leica SL2 with SL Summilux produces exceptional images which are unique and rich and only rivalled my Hasselblad. Q3 with that stunning 28 mm lens is a master piece . Most RUclipsrs are plain noobs and have no idea what they are talking about . It’s like comparing a Porsche Macan EV with a Chinese or Korean at 1/5 of the price and then talk BS about Porsche . Just wait and watch online forums plagued with comments how overpriced this is and how Sony offers three cameras with better specs at 1/3rd of Price without realising what it is . Majority of them have never seen , held or used Leica
So ready to buy this. I’ve been waiting since my OG SL for just this model. Thanks for the great overview.

To be honest I really really like your videos including these first impressions, but as I mentioned before, your long term stuff are the real gems and they are just so damn good and unique on YT. Can't wait for this happening for the SL3! (and perhaps the X100VI? - That Fuji is so hyped right now, it makes even my small channel grow :D)

Thanks for the very nice and informative video. I was glued to the end and absorbed every bit of it. It was clear that the engineers at Wetzlar put their heart and soul into designing this camera, but in contrast to what Andrea Pacella mentioned as the SL3 being the state of the art as of 2024, I was a bit puzzled by the autofocus tracking (or lack of it) which you mentioned is only good till 4fps, then what is the use of having a 15fps speed. Not sure whether these features have the potential to improve with future firmware updates. Till then I am holding on to my SL2 and looking forward to more on-field reviews, especially concerning the autofocus tracking.
With a 60MP sensor, those readout speeds aren’t conducive for significantly faster burst rates with continuous AF right now. I imagine they gotta release and S model gear for speed.
Am excited for your full review! I just got a Z8…and what resonated is not the features added to the SL3 is the simplicity versus the wealth of features in the Z8

In my opinion , Leica should start creating " How to videos " which will talk about their design sense and other aesthetic part of the product . Hope some one from Leica will see this comment and start working on this . Very few people know about Leica and their legacy and lens craftsmanship and coatings . Looking forward to see these videos in future . As always your video gives clear idea and inspiration about using the gears . Cheers and best luck .

I don’t know what they have available for the SL3, but the Leica Australia channel folks do an amazing job of explaining and tutoring.

I have been waiting for this camera since the beginning of digital era, coming from film time with RB67, I love Leica engineering
Great work! Probably the biggest update that matters to me is size and weight. Good thing I kept my M-L adapter, extra battery and of course, all my M lenses. Wont buy right away but eventually when I have some more demanding jobs on the way. Looks like a camera that will last a decade.
Agreed. I’m also excited for how much better it’ll get over time. The SL2 series saw so many firmware updates and the team is eager to drop a bunch more with this.

Unlikely for the M because I imagine much of it tied to the Maestro IV processor. The Q3 should be possible. I did my part by asking the team to bring it to as many cameras as possible lol.
Very excited to see the tilt screen... but the power button has me hesitant. I switched from other brands to LUMIX because they had the switch. I definitely need to swing by the Meatpacking District store and check this out though.
Everyone was feeling the same way when we saw it. I gotta spend more time to see how it benefits users.
Enticing, definitely! I need to look into what lens would pair nicely with this body and then see where I land budget-wise. But enticing indeed! 🍣

Great video! I've never used an SL camera. Does this camera give you any focus confirmation indication (a la green square) when you use an M lens? Or do you have to punch in/use focus peaking to confirm focus?
You’d have to use peaking to confirm focus in that way.
@@GajanBalan Thanks for the quick response! That's slightly disappointing. I have an M11 and a Nikon Zf. The Zf has that feature and I love using my M lenses on it. I would have sold my Zf and M11 and got this if you had said yes.... ;)

Which one would you choose between Hasselblad X2d vs Leica SL3 for portraits and landscape? thank you for your review on SL3...
I gotta put the SL3 through a proper trial in some of my shooting situations. I feel like it’ll let me shoot in more places, where the X2D will deliver richer files in specific environments. But again, gotta test them properly to find out.

Hi Gajan ! 🍓 Thanks for this introduction video. I can't wait for the full review, especially as yours are always very interesting to watch ! If you can do one like you did for the SL2-S it will be great ! I just received my SL3 right after launch and I will start using it today, trying to compare with my M11 in terms of image rendering, and user experience to decide which one I keep. I know both are in a very different area of usage and actually very complementary but I can't afford to have both at the end 😄 I'd love to see your honest thoughts and feedbacks on comparing the SL3 with the SL2-S (for video, and also low light performance : Leica seem to promote the idea that the SL3 is as good as the SL2-S in low light, but with of course the higher resolution). And also, comparing it with the M11. Both sensors are "the same", but are they for real in the final results... ? Having tested the Q3 a few months ago, I felt there was a difference with the M11 too, in terms of colors etc...

If you had to pick one camera and lens, would you have the Fuji GFX 100ii or the Leica SL3 ? Nicholas
Between the two, I’m more interested in the SL3. It caters to my type of work better.

Was there any discussion about the blockchain capabilities of the M11-P being ported across to the SL3? Does that require incremental hardware or just firmware?
The production of this product began earlier than the M11-P and so the hardware chip for CAI encryption was not on the table. By the time it became available, it was too far along to be incorporated with the SL3. There was also the belief that an M product would be the better introduction into the authenticity space, and improving upon it in later generations.
This is what I was told by Leica.

I'm not in the market for this one though - the M is my choice when it comes to shooting Leica and for more "modern" setups I still stick to my Canon setups, however I loved watching what the company is doing with their SL line. I've been accidentally turning on my GRIII and G7XII for years with the playback button. 🥘
I don't think buttons are bad, but maybe make it a double click, shutter+press, or a long press just so you don't arrive to your destination with a dead battery because it got bumped and took 1400 images of the inside of your bag. 🤔
Very good review! How is the IBIS in the SL3 compared to SL2? In numbers the IBIS in the SL3 is inferior (5 EV in SL3 vs 6 EV in SL2).
On paper it’s less, in practice I couldn’t see the difference yet. Looking forward to testing it further in person.
I just want to know if the image quality, the color science, are top and how they compare with previous cameras from Leica

I somehow love the on/off button :-) might wear off… any hint on comparing it to the X2D? In your personal opinion?

Does the plastic shutter button still make that noisy click? On a quiet set it was too noisy in the SL2-S.

Gajan, are you meaning the shutter or the shutter button? Reason I ask is I was shooting using electronic shutter in a completely silent set with the SL2-S and the plastic click of the shutter button was so noticeable that I had to stop. I would have expected the shutter button to be silent to offer completely silent shooting. A small detail perhaps but important I feel.
@@picturemaker Ah okay, that's interesting. I was talking about the actual shutter sound not the button itself. I didn't get the sense of the button (which is redesigned a bit) had a clickiness but I'll review it properly when I test this further.

🍪 I’m curious which len produces the better photograph on the SL3, a Leica SL lens or the Leica M lens if it’s a 🍎 to 🍏 comparison when both lens are of equal quality, say a 50mm APO lens SL or M. Reason I ask is I’ve heard the M APO lens are good to at least 200 megapixels. Thanks for the video!
Better is subjective but if we’re largely looking from a technical perspective, that SL is gonna drive better results. They’re engineered to resolve details well beyond 100MP.

I love the Q system, and wish for an M system…but the SL…it is a Leica with a lot of the brand touch points, but it seems like this is in a much more crowded competitive field.
Should have given it a tilt viewfinder like Fuji GFX and make it more svelte

Gonna spend the next few months with the SL3. I should have a better opinion by the end of it.

As much as I love Leica, no it doesn't compete with what's out there - yet. The AF system is still miles behind the Canon R5 and lightyears behind Sony (it was straight out atrocious on the SL2 and that's coming from an event and commercial photographer). Let's just be realistic instead of overhyping a camera to something that it simply isn't. For most users it'll still be more than enough, of course.
How many modern cameras can keep working in 45 degree weather?
There’s this strange thing with Leica that compels people to speak in absolutes. ‘Can’t compete’ is such a weird thing to believe because like I mentioned at the end of the video, it all comes down to how people leverage the differentiating features. Sometimes it’s just one thing that tips the scale and suddenly, something like a Sony A7R V can’t compete because it overheats.
Different tools for different jobs.

It's not for me! I don't buy any new cameras and lenses. I'm happily not a pro, but a daily photographer, using old equipment! M3,Nikon-F and some very compact, older digital cameras! Don't forget the elephant in the room! The Phone! Bravo!

The weight reduction is welcome (I had an S1R and it was not fun to carry and use) but I find the giant logo mystifying.
It’s been that way since the very beginning of the SL
Sold off my S1R because of the weight and the user interface that rivaled calculus.

I find the shutter way more noisy that sl2 and sl2-s
Was it impossible to have the screen be flush to the body like the x100v?
Also with the new X100VI!..all that German engineering and yeah..they can't figure out a way to have the screen seemingly flush with the body in their Q3's haha maybe the Q4 by that time they will have figured it out..haha
It’s possible yes, but the priority here was accessibility and durability. Having something you can access from any angle while being IP54 rated.

I think I’ll always reach for an M11 first, but that’s largely because of how I shoot. But this SL3 sure feels like a perfect partner.

This camera is not for me. Still I believe that Canon, Nikon, and Sony provide better all rounder performance. For me Leica means the M system.
For all the talk of creating a more streamlined user experience, I think the comment about camera technology having reached a plateau is one that won't age well. Typical of Leica to launch a camera that is inferior in features to the Nikon, Sony, Canon etc of 5 years ago. When those Japanese manufacturers release their updates later this year, this camera is going to look dated very quickly. It's essentially a Panasonic rehoused in a Leica branded body. It looks great, but it is very confusing as a flagship offering. Just seems like a bit of a suckers camera that can do a great job but can't justify its own price or existence.
People have been saying this for years and somehow, it never really sticks. And that’s largely because people try to equate products along spec sheets over user experience.
I can sense a hint of frustration in your comment. I’m unsure if you’re disappointed with this new release or if you simply don’t favor Leica as a brand. Nevertheless, I’m intrigued by your thoughts on technology. I share a similar perspective with the guy discussing the plateau of technology. What advancements do you wish for in the near future? What are your needs? Do you believe other brands possess breakthrough technologies that will soon demonstrate we are not hitting a plateau?

Why is it so expensive ? Leica lenses are no better than other brands, those days are long gone.
They’re priced because of how and where they’re made. Leica makes a range of lenses with different characteristics. Their SL APO line is hard to beat.

Andrea Pacella's opinion perfectly encapsulates why Leica has failed in the modern era. As "romantic" as it may sound, It's naïve to assume that photography technology has plateaued. This is why for nearly the same price of an SL3 you can buy a GFX system which completely overshadows it. Leica's slip up is that it never considered Japanese manufacturers its "competition" and that arrogance has turned them from industry leaders to luxury fashion brand in little over a decade.
Please elaborate how Leica has failed in the modern era. Last I checked, they continue to sell out of their most popular products and have had their third consecutive record-breaking sales year.

@@GajanBalan Photography as an industry has grown and Leica's growth rate has been stunted relative to its competitors. But you can't just think of Leica as any camera company. It has the heritage of being the "Ferrari" of the camera world- both extreme performance machine and work of art. However, unlike a Ferrari Leica's continual lack of innovation has significantly reduced their value proposition in the modern era. My point being that while more people are buying Leica's, its relative appeal has not scaled with its prior industry leading position in the market. From a consumers perspective this makes total sense because if your average BMW was faster than a Ferrari, I don't think Ferrari's would sell as well.

You mix up innovation and with adding more and more technical features, that most people think they need, but most of the time never use. So, it’s good that guys like you can find alternatives in the marked; no need to share your view on Leica.
@@goldfinch2283 I didn't say anything about adding more features. I said lack of innovation. It's ridiculous that 6k+ camera has far worse autofocus than a $800 Sony. It's also unacceptable that a 6K+ camera has worse jpeg's than a $900 Fuji. These are not "additional" features, they are the basics that Leica is falling behind at. I obviously haven't tried the SL3, but my experience with the Q3 was incredibly disappointing. That camera has worse than average corner focus and has a poorly installed OIS system that constantly rattles as you move the camera like a cheap toy. I'm saying this as a fan of the Leica, that they're falling behind and I can't justify owning a modern Leica anymore. They have not improved over their competitors and praising them benefits no one. I get that its cool to own a Leica and show off, but It's also got to do the job at that price point.
I noticed the different style of presentation and content, and I dig it. It didn't feel like a fluff piece, and offered genuine useful thoughts and information. I'm curious about the SL3 and I'll definitely keep my eye on it and the (hopefully) inevitable Panasonic counterpart whenever that happens.

Ah yes, a 60MP camera with 8K recording, IP54 weather resistance, IBIS, and phase-detect autofocus just feels incredibly behind in 2024 🙄
