Honestly, my favorite has to be the CHONKEY one. I'm normally not one for (lack of a better term) fat robots, I just don't find a point to making a humanoid machine fat, but there is something about him that makes him stand out more than his girth. I see that particular robot being some kind of guardian for an endangered princess, but not one that's super weak or anything, one that fights beside him. He takes on the big, tougher machines while she handles all the smaller ones. If there are tiny ones trying to climb all over him, she's got him covered with magic, or hacking tools, or a beam weapon of sorts. And if there's a massive one trying to claw over the guardian to get to her, he's never letting that claw near her. They compliment each other and nothing can stop them. Oh, and those aren't wings on his back, in my mind, it's a giant shield with THICC armor and barrier technology.
This is a great analysis and interesting viewpoint! I also imagine them super huge like a gundam or something, and in the chonkey one there are room compartments for the pilot, but engineers and control systems on board like a submarine or something 😂 Either way coming up with ideas for characters is always a super fun part of the process and it was interesting to hear your take on this! I use a drawing tablet for the 2D version, you really don’t need an expensive one at all. I really want to make food and character icons that are very detailed like my typical digital art, but pixel art is alluding me haha.
It depends how large you go really, the beauty of pixel art is it's not always about explicitly showing the detail but hinting at it with a careful arrangement of pixels, especially at the smaller sizes. That doesn't mean you can't make larger pixel art canvases and show all the detail you want, but at a point it becomes closer to digital art and you lose control over the individual pixels. No right or wrong, just do what you feel comfortable with, try increasing canvas size if it's not working out for you, but sometimes it can help to force the small limits on yourself as well. I love CSP for drawing and painting and I use it for hours every day. Unfortunately I find it next to useless for pixel art because the brush engine doesn't make pixel perfect marks. Take a round brush with a small size and make a few clicks and you'll find it doesn't create perfect circles and every mark is inconsistent from the other. Making line art with a one pixel brush is also a pain because it creates a lot of overlapping pixels and doesn't connect with the corners like it does in virtually every other software.
