This is such a good tutorial. There are way too many tutorials where someone tries to explain the one way they create art while showing bad examples of how NOT to do something and more often than not I even prefer the bad example. This often discourages me, making me believe that my taste is just so bad that I'll never be able to create something others like. You only told us what effects different methods have and how it can be bad if its done unintentionally, while showing examples of how to utilizing it to make incredible art. Yeah I try to keep an open mind with techniques. I’ve seen some incredible art which uses what some may consider bad, and I think by understanding the effect these techniques have allows you to use them effectively. You kind of limit yourself to a specific art style if you see something as good or bad, and good and bad is subjective so I don’t think it’s so effective to teach that as that would just be my opinion. Greetings from Russia with love! This is the best pixel art video I've been able to find on Russian and English-speaking RUclips. Dude, you're just awesome, keep it up!
When I make pixel art, I usually use a desaturated pallet for most things, but for glowing things or places of interest, I use a higher saturated pallet. It really helps make certain places of the art pop and give the illusion of glowing or it can make places catch your eyes.
This is the first video I have watched of yours, and I can say that it was very handy , as I have no true experience in creating art, however it has always interested me, and pixel art seems like the way to go. I say that because I love pixel art, and have always wanted to make art of the characters that I have come up with over the years. Thank You!
wow, thank you! I just start to have some interest in pixel art, and found there are so much to learn! It appears simple when looking at other people's work, and when I get started, I know that there are a lot to learn to get the result I want
This video was definitely a good place to start as someone just getting into pixel art :) and despite being in AP art, some of the basic art concepts you explained really helped me further with my regular art!!
Glad it was helpful Anna! Yeah I've been doing art for years but coming back to the basic concepts and trying to understand them further always helps me, glad it could help you too :D
You are a lovely person. Even when I already knew almost all these info and hate long videos, I stand to the end. Thank you for the content! I really enjoy it.
Thanks so much for watching until the end Richard! It’s always nice to get a good refresher on the basic so hopefully it at least served that purpose for you 😄
I'm a beginner digital artist on illustration and comics and I found most of the things I've learnt in the past few years summarized in your pixel art video 😇 This was very interesting and refreshing to watch.
Thanks Rizwan, yes a lot of this is applicable to digital art too, that's where I started and I still love making digital art, illustrations and comics, maybe i'll do more on this channel in the future :D
Thanks! I'm starting a project of a simple Gameboy Color game and this really helped! I haven't touched pixel art since I envied pixel artists who would make custom trainer and Pokemon images back on Pokemon role play fan forums in about 2006-2008 lol, so this helped a lot as a starting point!
You gave me back motivation to dwell into pixel art. I used to draw a little, then stopped because I got frustrated with my lack of talent. But as I slowly realised that it's mostly about learning the theory and putting it into practice - and not so much about having a natural gift - I regained some interest in pixels. And your video was the selling point for me to trully give it another chance!
Jesus Christ how did you explain shadow and lighting so simply it literally clicked in my brain so fast when it’s always been the thing I had the trouble with.
This guide is awesome, i like that each section is fast paste and tell the important thing in it, it helps not loose focus on the entire video. It is very informative, i learned a lot and it was entertaining to watch. I like the fact you take this wizard as an exemple for the whole video as well, it helps with consistancy and we don't get lost!
Yeah I was worried that there might be too much information in this video and be difficult to watch, but hopefully it stays fresh enough, and also people can always rewatch parts if they’re struggling to understand anything. Thanks for the support Emilie :D
for aseprite you can get it for free but have to compile all the files yourself. there are plenty of tutorials on youtube but always use the most recently uploaded one
Concise, detailed, and informative once again. Thank you so much for doing these videos - seriously helping me learn so much more than I could have otherwise!
haha thank you! In regards to your question, it all comes down to style consistency. For different things to appear cohesive they should share similar style attributes, including, but not limited to: value ranges, saturations, and colours palettes, shape language, outline style (if any)... :) I'll probably make a video exclusively on style at some point in the future
I usually dont write comments like this and you probably get this a lot but i just wanna say that i really really appreciate the way you explained all that in DETAILS and that also for free. This was one of the best free toturials i’ve seen in a while
Hi! Thanks a lot for taking the time to leave a nice comment, I really appreciate every single person that takes the time to share their experience, it wasn't that long ago that no-one would watch my videos so it's definitely not something I think I'll ever get used to, which is why I try to reply to all of them! I'm glad you found the tutorial useful, I hope your learning goes well :D Thanks Jisoo, feel free to share your work with me anytime on socials, I'd love to see!
This video is the best art fundamental video. Aside from the pixel art, the key fundamentals you pointed out are so concise and accurate. I'm a digital illustrator, stepping into the new world of pixel art and this video is just perfect. Definitely becoming a Patron. Thank you so much Saultoons!
Thank you so much!! I've been stuck in the same style and techniques for a long time and didn't know how to improve! Also you explained everything amazingly so thanks again!
I would like to add that not only Aseprite is great, but it's also open source, so technically free. You can get a pre-compiled and auto-updatable version by buying it; but you can also do the leg work yourself and compile it from the source code for free, and it's completely legal! The open source version is the same in every aspect, the only difference is it being non-auto updatable

Yeah it helps me a lot, it's nice to have a bunch of different approaches to try :)
Holy hell the amount of knowledge required to be able to communicate these concepts so clearly and so concisely is insane - so impressed by this video
Thanks for the love J BT! :D
I’ll just say this: you’re very handsome, but that animation where your head explodes is just disturbing, it is undeserving of your handsomeness.
Hahaha my head actually going to explode with that comment
@@saultoons do not explode that head. It is such a good head.
Hahaha
I lol'd HARD at this comment! XD (in a nice way, not a reddit way =P )
hahahahah
One of the most well-written, succinct, useful, and information-packed tutorials I've ever seen. Thank you so much and congratulations
Thanks so much for the kind words Arnouth! This was certainly a beast to produce 😂 best of luck with your learning!
this was... surprisingly helpful, wow! i've watched so many pixel art tutorials by now, trying to find ways to improve my sel-out, hueshifted artstyle, and the explanation of value, dithering and "light bouncing" shed some new light on the difficulties i was having. i think this deserves the title as the ultimate pixel art tutorial indeed, hah
Thanks for the kind words! I did my best to compile some stuff in there that I definitely find useful so im glad it can help 😄
This is one of the best videos of just basic art fundamentals I've seen on youtube.
Thanks for the kind words!
I just got into game dev and since I've been watching game code videos I've seen this video recommended multiple times. I finally watched it and holy shit this video is so good. I've been into art longer than game dev and pixel art is never really talked about but I've realized i like it a lot and this video was mind-blowingly good
Glad you enjoyed the video spaghetti :D Thanks for the kind words, and thanks for watching! Good luck with your game dev :)
I felt like my mind was just blown at the hue shifting part. That was amazing
Yeah there are so many little things like that :'D
I'm not a complete beginner but still find it hard to start drawing pixel art and simply to believe in myself. This video was really inspirational.
You got this Helena!!! Just try and keep it fun, no pressure, no need to compare to others. Do something for you :D
Greetings from Russia with love! This is the best pixel art video I've been able to find on Russian and English-speaking RUclips. Dude, you're just awesome, keep it up!
Greetings Russia :D Thanks for the kind words
8:55 Idk why but that wizard looks cool that way
Yah :D
Me too
When I make pixel art, I usually use a desaturated pallet for most things, but for glowing things or places of interest, I use a higher saturated pallet. It really helps make certain places of the art pop and give the illusion of glowing or it can make places catch your eyes.
Contrast lets go!!!
I have zero interest in drawing (mainly because my hands are very shaky )
But from pixel art it just gives a different vibe and I love it !
Yeah doing pixel art definitely is a different vibe from drawing, can be really chill 😄
@@saultoons true just Spotify running in the background and drawing pixel art , W H A T A V I B E ✨💖
firstly i wanted to make it very clear that i love you man... secondly: make a tutorial teaching how to make shadows in pixel art
hahah thank you! And perhaps, I'd recommend checking out my isometric tutorial actually, it has a nice section on shadows! :)
This is the first video I have watched of yours, and I can say that it was very handy , as I have no true experience in creating art, however it has always interested me, and pixel art seems like the way to go. I say that because I love pixel art, and have always wanted to make art of the characters that I have come up with over the years. Thank You!
You got this Nintonic, can't wait to see those characters you came up with :D
@@saultoons Thanks!
wow, thank you! I just start to have some interest in pixel art, and found there are so much to learn! It appears simple when looking at other people's work, and when I get started, I know that there are a lot to learn to get the result I want
Yes there's a lot to learn, but most important to have fun and learn as you go
This video was definitely a good place to start as someone just getting into pixel art :) and despite being in AP art, some of the basic art concepts you explained really helped me further with my regular art!!
It’s always nice to get a good refresher on the basic so hopefully it at least served that purpose for you 😄
You sir are the most solid teacher on this subject ever , I’m not even half way through the video
Glad I could help! Good luck with your learning :D
Easily one of the best videos I've ever seen. Love u man
@@kvazimodo2642 thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 🥰
This video would have saved me years of learning pixel art 😂. There was even a couple of things I had forgot. Great stuff.
Haha yeah it always helps to have a refresh too! Glad it helped :)
You got this Stardusting, best of luck with the gameboy color game!!! Glad the video could be useful for you :)
"Art is lifelong process" Did you know how beautiful that sentences is ?
hahah just the truth my friend, glad you liked it! :)
Glad I could help! Yeah it takes time and learning and practise. Make sure you’re having fun and it will fly by :D
Don’t give up trust me I have no talent when comes art for most part you just learn and grow and can get good 😌
Jesus Christ how did you explain shadow and lighting so simply it literally clicked in my brain so fast when it’s always been the thing I had the trouble with.
This is Criminally Underrated.
This comment is Criminally Underrated :D
@@saultoons well played :D
Another good tool to use is squinting a bit at what you've created, it always helps me pick out areas that don't fit well or need refining.
Solid tip!
I look use peripheral vision and tilt or shake my head slowly.
Careful with squinting too much, it can hurt your eyes during longer sessions.
Thank you!
I was seeking for more information to level up my pixel art, and the last part was the most important!
3:14 The all doubles looks way better than no doubles
It's certainly a very valid style :D I think it looks cool too :)
@@saultoons Yeah it's awesome :3
I remember watching this vid around a year ago when I started making pixel art, love this vid so much 💗💗💗
thank you!
No problem at all, thanks for watching :D
for aseprite you can get it for free but have to compile all the files yourself. there are plenty of tutorials on youtube but always use the most recently uploaded one
Concise, detailed, and informative once again. Thank you so much for doing these videos - seriously helping me learn so much more than I could have otherwise!
No worries at all I’m glad I can help! Thanks for the kind words 😄
Found you first on steam and now in my recommendations. Glad I watched the videos. Very inspiring and helpful. Thank you!
Oh yeh!!! Thanks for watching DK I appreciate it :D
omg these guys are so quick, im not the fastest anymore ;-; (i never was) good video saul :D
hahah thanks Bill! You were close :'D
I learned more in this video than I did in 4 years of art classes about lighing.
Hahaha glad I could help Sebastian 😄
This is so helpful, thank you
No problem at all Axel, I’m glad it could help!
thanks for enlightening me❤
Wish i could give you 10 stars :D I have a Question, how do you make different sprites fit together? Like furniture, trees and enemy's...
haha thank you!
Where did you find the font of the thumbnail? Its so pretty
This video is the best art fundamental video. Aside from the pixel art, the key fundamentals you pointed out are so concise and accurate. I'm a digital illustrator, stepping into the new world of pixel art and this video is just perfect. Definitely becoming a Patron. Thank you so much Saultoons!
I came from digital art too so you’re on the right path, the pixel art community is amazing thanks for the kind words 😄
Damn, this video is so necessary to pixel art enthusiasts, man. Thank you for this!
Glad you like it Breno, thanks for the support
So much love and dedication in this video.
Great job, @Saultoons!
Thanks Nuno! I worked super hard on this one and it knocked me out for a while haha, hope it can help :)

Haha I try my best to respond to those who take the time to comment, thanks, I hope your day is going well too :)
Thank you so much!! I've been stuck in the same style and techniques for a long time and didn't know how to improve! Also you explained everything amazingly so thanks again!
No worries at all Carolina, keep learning!!! :D Thanks for watching
This is like college level education in 15 minutes
Wow big compliment thanks a lot!
