What does impact ring mean as it pertains to tire noise?

You hear a ringing or pinging noise after hitting a sharp edge on the road. Imagine you're driving on a concrete road that had the concrete poured into block sections. If one of those sections was slightly higher, and your tire hits it, you would hear a ring from the sudden shock to the tire.
