Tyler, The Creator easily has the best drop strats. Man's does the regular 2 years between albums, but is also still doing random shit like the Grinch soundtrack, features on his friends songs, producing, and when it comes album time he always has a dope rollout. The CMIYGL billboards where you called the number on it and it played the dialup he would use in the album was genius. He's around just enough to never leave you hanging but he also doesn't drop a lot of music until the album is ready. Best rapper out rn no lie
This so true. I also love how he teases an album and the finished product is out in a matter of weeks. It's a perfect way to build hype without leading his fans on.
Yessss🙌🏻 he is my favorite and most trustworthy drops , he always delivers just the right amount of hype without it being saturated, he also always brings something new like a character.

I actually think SZA has done a really good job lately of being in that sweet spot between gone too long and oversaturation. She dropped CTRL in 2017 (an album that I still revisit today as if it dropped last week) and was silent for a bit. But since 2020 it’s been a steady stream of features, singles, and leaks. Which has kept her fans fed juuust enough to keep them in anticipation without all the pressure of trying to outdo her previous album had it been radio silence all along. And everything she’s dropped has been a hit, so it also makes people more confident that her next album will be just as good. Like personally any album that has Hit Different, Good Days, I Hate You on it will never be a flop imo.
I think that’s the sweet spot that I personally like seeing artists be in: take your time when it comes to albums but if you wanna drop a single or be on a feature here and there in between that’d also be great!
Agreed! And the singles keep getting better. “I Hate U” sounds so fresh and is definitely a step up from good days and good days was a step up from hit different.

stromae dropped racine carrée (one of the best albums ever) in 2013 and then *disappeared* because he got tired of being famous (edit: and also got a horrible reaction from a malaria medicine, including a serious depression; i just thought it might be a bit tasteless to not mention this), and then in 2022 he dropped a new album and it's so good i could cry. the wait was worth it, it sounds like the best parts of his earlier music but it has a new maturity to it. the darkness and humour are still there, perfectly balanced, but the sound is new and he's trying out new stuff musically. i also love how all the new music videos are filled with comments in different languages all saying "WELCOME BACK KING" bc yeah they're absolutely correct.
Oh I was starting to think that he would never come back. Racine Carrée is literally one of the best album, and just him leaving after that was haaaaaard for fans. The new album is so good too!

The one artist that is so connected with his fanbase and the reception of his music is The Weeknd. The guy is a master of crafting attention in the media, and zooming past expectations. Dawn FM was a fabulous sequel to After Hours, progressing musically, with a sweet-spot 2 year gap, progressing the story and his legacy. And this is coming from a fan of his oldest projects, he is sure Abel to stay relevant and change his fanbase's musical appreciation by experimenting with sounds. No wonder he's so popular, and will continue to be. The artist-fan connection is vital in such a saturated market, and he's a professional at it
idk bc while i think dawn fm is probably the better album, after hours singles are still being played EVERYWHERE. like I haven't heard anything from dawn fm when going out in public but i'll hear save your tears constantly
but I also gotta respect the amount of dedication he puts in his album cycles and aesthetic choices

@@Zaftheguy Dawn FM strikes me as an almost decidedly less commercial album than After Hours. That one had very defined ready-made radio singles that Dawn clearly doesn't, with a couple exceptions here and there. Abel clearly wanted to put the concept above all else, which is in detriment of current commercial practices. And I respect the hell out of that. But he could have probably done better had he given Dawn some more space from After Hours.

I feel this way about Normani. When Motivation came out there was so much hype about her debut solo album even Beyonce co-signed she was up next then everything went silent for two years. No updates, no interviews, no lives, fed us nothing but IG model pics. Then pops up again with Wild Side and we're like FINALLY!! and sis deads us yet again smh. Her album is going to have to be incredible to live up to the wait.

Chance the rapper’s downfall has to be the most heartbreaking ones I’ve seen. I used to admire this man so much. His lyricism, his passion, his talent. From his early work, 10 day, acid rap, colouring book. To see his journey truly inspired me. I remember the first ever public RUclips video I made was for him (still on my channel).
When his album came out, I spent months hyping it up. I told everyone I love to do a Spotify watch party with me.
Holy fk that was the worst album I’ve anticipated to date. You can tell he only made majority of the songs to trend and get hype. Which he did (hot shower did blow up on tik tok). But he didn’t do anything that would set him apart from other rappers.
The only tolerable song was we go high. That song had meaning, it had substance.
I wish we didn’t live in an age where musicians only made music to trend (Justin Bieber - Yummy, is the prime example of this for me).

Literally especially when you love an artist and then they get big and only make music that will be trendy for TikTok. Megan thee stallion is a huge example of this for me because I fell in love with her when I listened to Tina snow. Her flow and writing was amazing I’d watch her freestyles and then as she got bigger I’d just watch the quality decline to songs like “body”
i think i'm in the minority but i don't really anticipate any artists releasing new music, i'm just happy when they do. i have so much music to listen to already and a whole lot more left to discover

I feel like The Weeknd strikes a good balance. He’s drops often enough that you don’t feel like you’re starving for music but there’s enough time in between releases that you’re still excited for each new project.
Idk im personally feeling listeners fatigue from the weeknd. He's one artist i wish who would go on break. Also his latest album felt like a dry rehash of his previous hits.

The Weeknd is one artist that does that very well. After Starboy he started dropping once every 2 years, but the way he builds his hype is something else, with his aesthetic and features. After Dawn FM for example, the album is so good I don’t mind waiting for the next one
If I dropped an album that made me a millionare I would just chill and have fun until I feel creative again so I release another masterpiece

Tyler, the Creator nails the wait time imo. Always 2 years between new projects, perfect amount of time to digest the music and let it embed itself in your life while still keeping fans hungry and guessing at what new sounds he’ll be making next.

The emotions that Ye, Frank and Kendrick make you go through with either not releasing music or doing what Ye did…really makes you appreciate the album roll out from artist like The Weeknd and Tyler the Creator.
Franks brother died, one of the main reasons he slowed down. It’s not all about what the audience wants, Frank obviously needed time away from producing and recording. Put it into perspective before you say how it impacts you

Lorde was gone for 4 years until Solar Power, everyone was waiting for a melodrama kind of album, and she drops something really different from her other works and even her fans dislike the album, but I think that she prefered to make a album that she'd like and will be reflected herself in there, than making what just the public was expecting for her, and i think that’s kinda cool

im from takapuna/auckland Newzealand and knew lorde when she was growing up. signing to UMG was probably the worst choice she made but over here you dont have a lot of choices. the indie route is 100x harder when the total population is smaller than most of the states in the US

An artist that is absolutely killing me with the wait is PARAMORE! After Laughter was released almost 5 years ago and even though we've had two solo Hayley albums, i miss the band more than anything. I feel like (or at least hope so) that this is gonna be a case of an album that, even though the wait was excruciating, the payoff is going to be massive.

honestly tho sza being insecure about her AMAZING music and album is inspiring for any creative out there because think of all the art that you're sitting on that the world might love just because you're insecure about it...just release it (talking to myself as a producer)

I agree with everything you said, but i have something to add. I too was one of those people who gets high expectations when an artist drops an album. But in doing so, I end up ruining the whole listening experience for myself.
Nowadays I don’t have any expectations when I first hear it, but instead allow myself to fully listen to the artist. What are they trying to say? Why did they choose to create this song this way?
Idk, maybe this will help for anyone who gets disappointed after album hype🤷🏾♀️
If there’s an artist I love I won’t listen/watch any promo, if there are singles I MIGHT listen to one or two, and on release day I block all the reviews and takes and let it sit for a week and then jump in when everyone done being loud as hell. I’ve found that even if it’s a bit extreme it really helps me create such a unique listening experience and keeps others out
It definitely helps. I went into Solar Power, Scaled and Icy, Donda, The off season and Dawn FM with zero absolutely zero expectations no matter the hype or what the artists dropped before that and each album has blown me away. We often like to think that every song is gonna hit like a drug the way Blinding Lights does for example, yet we often forget that thoughtful artists are all gonna hit you in a different way and spot with their music, and if you only leave a gap open for it that doesn’t exist while closing off all the others you’re most definitely gonna be disappointed

I've been really enjoying Rex Orange County's release strategy. He went silent for a few years after the last album, and then came back with a finished album releasing tomorrow, a tour, and three consistently good features proceeding it. Whoever's doing his marketing has it on lock

Lil Nas X really has the best marketing strategies, he releases singles at the same time as his controversial music videos, leaves the right amount of time between each single and the album, and gets a bunch of people mad at him in exactly the way he wants them to be mad at him.

As a kpop fan, I'm eating well, but what's scary is when a group does actually take a break, especially over 18 months. Not many people release an album after that amount of time because the group has just silently disbanded. Otherwise, I love that there's constantly new music and sometimes the longest I have to wait between albums can be as short as 4 months, but it comes at the cost of artists being overworked and me being broke.
the only group that doesn’t constantly drop music but yet still maintains the hype is blackpink. they haven’t released music in like 2 years which is very unexpected for a kpop group, having 2 years in between releases for western artists is normal or even longer it just kinda shows how crazy the kpop industry is expecting a comeback every 4 months, i feel so bad for twice their company is constantly milking them for money giving them comebacks as frequently as possible, those poor girls must be so tired and overworked.

I think every artist should try a more personal and solo approach once and a while so they can explore their craft in every way that’s true to themselves.
Same. I'm excited to see where she is going with her music. I'd love to hear great instrumentation and soul, kind of Stevie Wonder'esque. However, while I think everybody agrees that Beyonce is an icon, I am not sure if B7, whatever it will be, will be as commercially successful as her previous solo projects (I hope it will). All her little projects since the Lemonade era (incl. Coachella in this) haven't really garnered that much hype. People weren't really that crazy about Everything is Love or The Lion King album. "Be Alive" didn't really create any sort of buzz (she of course didn't promote it at all and I honestly don't think that the song was that exciting). While Beyonce is a superstar, a Queen, who put out genre-bending, uber-successful albums in the 10s, she didn't really have that many radio/streaming hits in the last decade. I think the last real hit-single people remember was Drunk in Love in 2014. All that said, the music industry has changed so much, there is a whole new generation out there who only know Beyonce as a legacy act, an icon, but not as the hot artist of the moment (like she was in the 2000s).

I’m not a fan of Taulor Swifts music but she does a good job of staying relevant and supplying content for her fans. She’s been topping charts since I’ve been in high school, and there are times where after I’ve listened to her music that I wonder why.
I feel like Beyoncé needs to drop and album asap because everything is love and the gift do not count as Beyoncé albums in my mind, her last album was Lemonade and that dropped in 2016, please give us new music

My view on if the wait was ever truly worth it depends how re-watchable/timeless the project was.

I feel Lana Del rey falls into the category of making music pretty much every year but each album is beautifully crafted and clearly a lot of passion is put into each one
Disagree, i can appreciate her music and artistry, love her songs and a some albums but i lowkey think she works on new music too often. Its starting to feel a little bland , and she kinds is just pumping out albums that aren't memorable and repeating the same things she already does. Blue banisters is not memorable , it has a few songs that you can listen to more than once but after a while you really forget about it. Same with chemtrails, her last good album was norman. Too little music is bad and too much music isn't good either. She is starting to lose her spark and all her songs are starting to sound the same . She is releasing a lot of fillers , no true works of art .

I don’t know a lot of times I can feel when an artist doesn’t put as much passion in the music as usual.
Just a general feeling. For me it’s similar to Ariana Grande. Her newest effort felt underwhelming to me. Something was missing when I listened to it and I don’t go back to the project often.
Like they should take more time on the music and live life a little so they don’t just get stuck in the same zone when they make songs.

Then there's bands like King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, who've released 20 albums in 10 years (5 of them in 1 year) all varying in styles and the fans go wild every time! They've mastered the over saturation to the point where they can't go wrong

lorde is a great example of making people wait. she won't be spotted for 3 years in between albums- she went to frickin antartcia. people never know what to expect with her new music because she's in such different stages of her life when she writes albums that they seem like different genres. always works so well for her solar power is a classic

Solar Power was cute but definitely not a classic. The hype died down after a week and there was no follow up single. I just wish she came in with something more impactful after being gone for so many years.

man i've been following nathan so long, i remember when we were waiting for blonde and he was rickrolling us on twitter, making fun of us for believing when he linked the album
One excellent example of waiting long, but also making the wait worth it and signifying growth in music, that I always refer to and think about when it comes to this, is Aly & AJ's Ten Years. Album was literally dropped in 2018 once everybody had forgotten about them, their last album was literally a Disney teen star album, and everyone had just written them off as such, like Ashley Tisdale, Miranda Cosgrove, etc etc. Then they come and BUST thru the doors with a no-skip album after 11 years of hearing nothing from them besides from the few shows and movies they acted in. And it was AMAZING. The entire album has no skips, and even propelled them to have a sustainability to continue their music, go on tours and festivals, and consistently drop amazing albums, INCLUDING A Touch Of The Beat, which is honestly one of my Albums of The Year for 2021. I could write an essay on their comeback honestly because its, THAT GREAT.
There are so many people consuming without thought, uncritically. It's rather transparent who's just looking for a vibe that matches their whatever party bio-rhythm, and who's taking these in as art rather than product.
For those who churn through music without taking into an artist's growth as a person as well as an entertainer and condense it down to "MID", I hope a critique isn't all they're making. And I hope they're opening themselves up as much as they're trying to dissect a soul letting someone in to their human experience. Great Vid

I feel like this problem is so prevalent in all forms of media. Whether it’s music, video games, or books and television. Bottom line, I think it’s OK if somebody takes a break. As long as they’re doing it to replenish themselves and not just act lazy. I feel like I’m saying this more for myself because I feel like I take too much time off from work seriously. LMAO.

We should respect artists who take their time creating art. If Kendrick thinks that the current album he is working on isn't up to his standards, he - as the artist - has the ability to continue working on it until completion. Those who fault artists for "holding onto music" are the same people who'd fault an artist's latest work for not living up to expectations. Let them take their time if time is needed.

Brooo it’s so hard to make good art especially when you’ve set your own bar so high. The anxiety of following up great work makes it difficult to be satisfied with what you’re doing. Artists should be able to take as much time as they can to create, they don’t owe any of us anything at all.

The first artist I thought of when it comes to waiting for so long to release anything new is Dean. He’s a Korean R&B artist and his album, 130 mood : TRBL, was incredible. He has a few singles here and there, but he hasn’t released a new album since. He teased it last year but still. I do hope he comes back.

Nah cuz once I learned that I should just live in the moment and not in anticipation life became better
i used to wait 2 or 3 years for an album without much of a problem, but i got into kpop and that changed everything for me. the most popular kpop groups release music all the time. if you're just counting studio albums and eps, twice have had 17 releases since 2015. most fans expect at least an ep every six months, and if they don't get something in over a year, it's usually fair to assume the company isn't doing a great job. it really warped my expectations of music turnover and i'm really upset it did! trying to build my patience for release dates again. it also helps me enjoy one release for a longer time.
The GOAT of not dropping music is D'Angelo though. Went away for 14 years with great features here and there but no other studio release.
Came back with Black Messiah (2014), to me, the best thing he ever made. I'll argue that To Pimp A Butterfly probably wouldn't have happened without that album.
The black and white cover art, the focus on analog sounds and musicianship, the throwback yet modern trippy feel. The content in the lyrics.
I feel like those albums are connected, maybe I'm just making that connection but I'll die on that hill.

The gap between Lust for Life and NFR, as torturous as it was, was PERFECT and NEEDED. Probably the best time to be in the Lana fandom. Chemtrails and Blue Banisters being released in the same year was such a poor decision tho imo, both albums came and went. Also, the production on Blue Banisters... Miss Lana doing me wrong
i love seeing your takes on music, honestly so good and true. my "killing me with the wait" artist is arcade fire, it's been almost five years since their last release, i am what you would call a stan, however right now, they're slowly teasing something new and it's been what feels like forever that i don't have the excitement i have had with previous teases and releases. maybe I've changed a lot in the last five years but i never thought i wouldn't go crazy at the thought of a new arcade fire release🤷🏻♀️
I wish the band fun. would make a return. I knew about them since their Aim and Ignite album (which is criminally underrated btw), then out of nowhere they got like 3 of their songs from their Some Nights album on top 40 radio at the same time. So suddenly everybody knew about them. Their lead singer even did a collab with P!nk, and another with P!ATD (even tho that might've been sliiightly before they blew up). Then they just kinda... gave up as a band? they didn't officially split, but we also haven't heard from them since. like how are you gonna drop all these massive bangers then just.... leave??? they've left me with musical blue balls for the last 10 years i swear

A strategy I don’t like is releasing a single for the album like a year before the album comes out. Then when the album comes out it’s like I don’t even wanna play that song with the album cus it feels so separate and the single is already played out. Cordae did this with a few songs on his new album and overall I think it’s a great body of work but the way I consumed it was very hurt by him releasing all of 3 of his hype tracks a year to a few months before the album came out. Another thing is Don’t show your whole hand either save the best songs for the release of the album
The Weeknd also did this with Take My Breath right? (Although on Dawn FM it’s a bit different)
