Robert Pattinson should have been mentioned here aswell. Going from playing a teenage heartthrob vampire to doing films like Good time, the Lighthouse, Tenet and Batman just shows how well he has evolved from the the start of his career.
If we're going to shout out Robert we're going to shout Kristen Stewart out too. She went from Twilight to Happiest Season to Spencer is pretty while. Both actors are much more talented than most of us thought.
The Weeknnds Dawn fm not being appreciated is a crime that album is a masterpiece and it has so much potential and its a shame that people are ignoring it.
@@unhelpfulrevelations7989 exactly all of his albums especially Dawn fm and After hours are a grower it will get better and better with each listen. After a while I find myself liking different couple of song each time from the album and will stuck in my mind.
I love The Weeknd, but as Nathan put it, artists should do things that have not been done before. Dawn FM is unfortunately just a rehash of 80s pop in a generic way. Just my opinion though.
@@LivinThins Is it tho? I feel like the Dawn FM's got a lot more soul vibes than strict 80s pop, then there's the Japanese pop sample on Out of Time, the new-wave-ism of Gasoline, etc
It’s a good album but after hours was still in transition that was the problem… a lot of people was still hype off of that plus he’s done better 80’s type songs it’s just most of it was ehh and I love xo but kissland better than dawn
Mac Miller changed in his style between his albums so much while growing older, you could listen to him growing up und getting wiser with the time. He changed from the young and experimantal boy, who’s focused on the money and lifestyle, to the young man in love and finally the man, who really knows what life is about. His change in music, while his perspective on life changed, touched me in a way no other artist ever did.
Even though Zendaya is still young I like how she is always trying new projects. I have not watched Euphoria myself but that doesn't take away the fact that she went from doing Disney to portraying a person with a serious addiction problem. Not to mention her other projects like Malcolm and Marie and the Greatest Showman. Love her.
But with actors it's a bit different. They have to do the roles they get. They can go after other roles but it's hard. Mathew McConnaghey is always talking about how he stopped doing movies for like 2 years because all he was getting was like romcom roles. He had to put his foot down to get something different. It's not easy for actors to just switch it up unless they were big drama actors trying out comedy or blockbuster roles. Like if Leo DiCaprio decided to star in the next James Gunn movie or something. The real culprits are musicians and directors who refuse to switch things up. They have all the power and they get comfortable.
This man cannot stop spewing banger takes. This is such a relevant topic nowadays with 'sequels' just remaking movies and artists sticking to a sound for years on end *coughdrake* I just crave those artists that keep things fresh and exciting for their fans (not unlike Nathan himself tackling all sorts of new topics to talk about-)
I agree but the fact that he said drake never made a bad album and then make a video literally about the reason why everyone dislikes drake since 2015 is kinda stupid and to me is a bad take.
Thinking about change ups, it's absolutely incredible to me that Ludwig Goransson, who composed the music for Community and New Girl also composed the music for Black Panther and Tenet. That's not only a glow up imo, but also displaying some insane creative range for composing.
Aaliyah is a great example of this. Though she remained dominantly R&B, she stretched the limits of being an Urban Pop artist. She invented herself with each album, from a teen that rocked baggy clothes to a confident woman in a span of her short, but highly influential career.
Yes! , she reminded me of Michael Jackson in the sense that, pop music videos in the 80s were just people singing infront of a camera changing scenes. But MJ was dancing and gave us movies. Aaliyah was the same, and, while her other female r&b artists were wearing dresses and just singing infront the camera , she came out the gate at 14 with her first album wearing baggy clothes and shades. Then her One in A Million era where she wore her signature side part hairstyle that covered her right eye. omg! In her 22 years she did more than most artists would on a lifetime. She influenced fashion and most of the shades you see people rocking now, she wore them first
So on point! Her three albums Age, One In A Million and the Red (self-titled) album were all sonically and lyrically different. She really did have eras’s.
Radiohead is definitely an example. Each of their albums are so vastly different from each other and I love them for it, they're truly pushing themselves out of their comfort zone
When Beyoncé drop her self title without any promotions I thought that was one of the most iconic things to happen in music history. Switch it up completely from her previous album 4, and we saw the Beyoncé that was more grown up and intimate with her audience.
@@soaribb32 What's awesome about that is that she probably will. She's never been comfortable doing the bare minimum so I have hope she'll change it up again.
She's also someone who experiments and it always turns out so well. Everything from Dangerously In Love to Black is King is so versatile and unique. She doesn't put herself in a box and it's iconic af.
Very surprised tyler the creator wasn’t talked about in this, his albums are the definition of growth. Not just sonically but maturity. Bro went from talking about killing people and sadness to love interests and boats. He truly to me is the definition of change
@@basicallydeadbooks000 I have said this for so long about the black eyed peas and people scoff at me, they constantly produce hits and change and innovate and I wish more people would take them seriously I blame fergie lol
Honestly impressed that there was no mentioning of Tyler considering how his last 4 projects are insanely different one from another and it’s when he started throwing out unexpected projects after another that were all so good and cohesive and it felt as if he was an expert of those specific sounds, excited asf for his project next year
DOJA CAT. When she had to keep performing Say So, I was nervous especially because it was already EVERYWHERE. But then every other performance, she would completely change up the genre, my favourite being when she did a rock version at the MTVs I believe. Seriously y'all, look that version up, it's surprisingly good but also showcased that she really is super talented and not afraid to try something new.
Oh yes! I’m not really a fan of her music like that but man that performance was sooooo good! I had to give her , her props. She is definitely extremely talented .
When the Kendrick Lamar album came out I realised how few artists I get excited for because I don't know what they will sound like next. Kendrick is a great example of that. This video just reflected my feelings towards artists and media in general. I've never seen any of your videos until this point but this was an amazing one and now I have a boatload of your videos to watch.
For me denzel curry is the same where each album has a different sound and meaning. Melt my eyez is so different sonically than his other albums which are all different from each other
I feel like some musical artists are not just.. well, musical artists, but an "everything artist". People like Childish Gambino (as mentioned in the video) can do anything
It’s insane how adeptly he can alternate between different arts. If you think about how uniquely impressive it is for artists like Andre 3k, Radiohead, Gorillaz to master different genres of MUSIC. And Gambino is doing the same thing across art forms! The man has successfully genre hopped in his music and he’s also refused to let himself be typecast from his role in Community and gone on to play dramatic roles! It’s ridiculous
Childish Gambino really felt ahead of his time. BTI really influenced a lot of the 2010s with musicians really changing their styles and flows now and really understanding the difference between “artists” and “musicians”
*Pushes up nerdy classical music glasses* My man Beethoven was exactly this. His music was constantly evolving and growing overtime, from traditional classical-era style music in his early years, to triumphant and powerful pieces like his third and fifth symphonies, and eventually to deeply emotional and profound pieces like his 14th string quartet that birthed an entirely new era of classical music in Europe. In his later years, people straight up though he was lossing it and was going mad, then he dropped his ninth symphony and shook the goddamn world. I mean, who else is insane enough to write a symphony where the first three movements have no vocals, then in the fourth movement you suddenly have not only FOUR SOLOISTS, but an ENTIRE FUCKING CHOIR?! The madlad, Beethoven! And those changes, even if they don't match expectations, shift and shape entire eras of music and art.
Arctic Monkeys switched up their sound completely for AM and a lot of people wanted their album after that to just be AM part 2 so they could relive their tumblr days but Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino is so different from anything else they’ve put out and they did it so well that I think it’s my favorite album by them
THIS. Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino really grew on me. First listen, it was admittedly a little jarrimg. But I love that album now, and just love the band so much.
the ONLY time Kanye West released a body of work that the public was expecting from him and was something that they wanted was Late Registration after College dropout. (both 10's) every single other album of his is different than the last and changed the perception of him and what kind of music he makes
Donald Glover has to be the best example of this. He plays a hilarious character on community and then has music all over the place that’s incredible. And then Atlanta, his range in music and acting is incredible.
I love that Zed is more so about Quality over Quantity. Idc how long it takes to drop a video cause I know when he does drop the content, editing and visuals will be amazing!
@26 Mic if you keep doing this, you won't get an audience of people who like your content. Focus on making videos, be patient and let RUclips push your videos. If your low on views it might mean your video isn't great and you need to focus on retention and CTR
Lady Gaga has never not innovated, she has always showcased her talent and vision and she has range. Artpop, to Joanne, to a collaboration with Tony Bennet. She followed up the A Star is Born soundtrack with Chromatica. Iconic.
@@MoonOffSpringC OMG YOU'RE RIGHT I FORGOT ABOUT THAT LMAO I was thinking About Stupid Love because that video was literally recorded with an iphone, guess she still doesn't know about cameras lol
Wes Anderson is cool cause he’s able to make multiple types of visual media like stop motion and live action while never really straying from his style that he perfected and his fans love
@@Pizza_Rat I guess that's fair. He really had a unique style to begin with. CB was his first big risk, but people didn't like it (I love it btw.) He knew he had to make something clean and excessable, but personal also-Flower Boy. But Igor is the combination of the instrumental uniqueness AND emotion that makes Igor Tyler's best for me. And he came with big mixtape energy on CMIYGL. I love his variety, personally
People don’t realise the Kendrick discourse happens with every album, depending on when you hop on. GKMC made him a superstar so when TPAB came out his current fans wanted GKMC 2, not a new unfamiliar sound. Then after TPAB’s acclaim his fans were initially disappointed with DAMN as it wasn’t a jazz rap black empowerment album like TPAB but a commercial conceptual album. Then with MM&TBS he makes an experimental self-reflection album that sounds nothing like the commercial stuff on DAMN. People have to learn to expect the unexpected, especially when the artist as shown that their whole career.
It's definetly not kendrick fans it's mostly the haters, numbers lover and club bangers seekers that's complaining, a real Kendrick fan knows this already
@@aldialad True to an extent but people do have favourite albums, which is typically the one they discover him with. So each release always has some level of discourse from part of the fanbase
"He'll give us what we need, it may not be what we want" of course kanye would sample this. Applies exactly to how nathan felt about the Kendrick album
Janet Jackson. She is a blueprint for different and diverse eras. From the black and white, social justice Rhythm Nation to the warm, sensual, funky janet. to the red, mental health, R&B Velvet Rope era. Truly legendary and iconic.
I think part of why the new Beyoncé album is so insanely good is because of how she really switched up her style. And even within the album each song is so unique but have a common musical thread between them that makes them flow so well too!
As someone who was carried through my teenage years by early-mid 2010s "Tumblr" pop (feels derogatory but that's the term I see used most often), Marina is the literal definition of reinventing herself to me. Electra Heart was a game changer. She was barely recognisable from her debut era and she was doing something no one else was doing at the time in terms of not only lyrics and instrumentation/production, but visual storytelling, aesthetic and satirical commentary. And critics weren't really there for it but those of us who got it, GOT it.
Marina is such a versatile artist and I love that each one of her albums is uniquely itself. You can’t really compare her albums because they’re just so different. I would have never expected her to follow up EH with Froot, but she did and miraculously, both albums sounded authentically Marina. She is a true artist, in every sense of the word
electra heart DEFINED that era for me but i was way too young to understand the satire. looking back that album is genius b it i absolutely shouldn’t have been listening lmao
Expecting every single thing to be completely different from the other is unrealistic imo, but it's healthy to switches it up from time to time and keep things fresh 🤷🏾♂️
dawgg i cant believe i didnt listen to MESMF until like a month after it dropped… favorite album of the year and literally only one that i catch myself keep going back to
Blackpink is one of these artists, to be honest. I don't understand how people aren't tired of them making the same song over and over again with the same formula. The song structure is expected at this point and you know what you're getting every time. When they do switch it up, it doesn't last long and they go back to what makes them money. I just want to see some variety because I truly think variety is how an artist proves themself. No one wants to see stagnancy.
i agree! they do the "cool badass loud-ass" style really well, but we were robbed of so many different sides of them, to be honest... like imagine horror concept blackpink??? fun summer concept blackpink?? sеху concept blackpink??? something jazzy from them??? something angsty??? something tender and romantic??? i want to see the range, something different 😭😭😭
So true!!! A horror theme blackpink like with witchy vibes!!! One day just one day!!! A group that does something different every time is Gidle. A different look and concept every time!!!
Michael Giacchino is one of the best soundtrack composers because of how much variety you can find in his soundtracks. He can go from creating whimsical disney soundtracks to dark superhero scores and they all sound interesting and unique to each film but you can still recognise that it's his work.
This right here. Man composed the score for animated classics like Up and Inside Out. Then also superhero films like The Batman and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy. Range.
I really love Tyler the Creator her went from dark edgy vibes to beautiful masterpieces that still come with his impeccable delivery anyways I really liked the fact you put wait for you at the end
I think that Michael Jackson was one of the best artists when it came to "switching it up". After the success of 'Off the Wall' and the cultural phenomenon that was 'Thriller', I think that everyone was expecting for him to come out with more soulful and RnB music, or more ballads. Yes, he had pop songs on 'Thriller', but I think that at the time he was rather revered for his more soulful sounds. He did the complete unexpected when he came out with 'Bad'. Not only did he change his fashion style (switching out the leather and glittery jackets for the straps and the studs) but he also changed his musical style for a more edgier sound. There was a lot more synth sounds and futuristic kind of songs. That was also when Michael started to write more world anthems like 'Man in the Mirror'. Bad was a major success, however, and people were probably expecting for Michael to come out with an album that was similar to Bad afterwards, but he didn't. The next album was 'Dangerous' and it had a more New Jack Swing (Can't Let Her Get Away) and hip-hop kind of style. It also had a lot more sensual songs (In The Closet) and gospel-like tracks (Will You Be There) on it. It was very different from the rest of his catalogue. He also changed his fashion style with this era as he wore simpler outfits with hints of the militant style he had adopted previously, but more toned down. The next album, History, was his most personal album as he spoke more about his relationship with the media, the injustices of the world, and the struggles with fame. It was a successful album but it's my least favourite out of his entire catalogue. He changed his fashion style again for this era because this is when he started wearing the golden/metallic hockey knee pads with his outfits. He still looked cool, though. So, in my opinion, Michael Jackson was one of the best artists when it came to switching things up. He invented the whole 'era' of music' thing because of the way he changed his entire style to match the type of album he was putting out. It was lowkey genius because it made him unpredictable and interesting.
Definitely the best at it. He even got completely new fits for every era. Dangerous, History and Invincible are so different yet so good. His discography is just undefeated tbh
@@tinaye8638 Probably the best at it when it comes to men bc women gave/give him a run for his money in that aspects. Especially Madonna and his little sister Janet. They did some 180 type of shit. Looks, hair style, make up, sound, asthetics .....
Mj changed up all the time going from disco and funk to doing hard rock and rnb and then heavy metal and power ballads to hip hop and gospel soul to russian waltz and orchestral he could do any style
In the movie realm, Stanley Kubrick is the first person who came to mind. Just with his final four films he made a period piece, a horror, a Vietnam war movie, and an erotic thriller, and all four of which are widely considered masterpieces.
Also a good example of how experimenting and stepping outside your comfort zone won't always bring immediate success. 808s was ye's least well-recieved album at the time; he ditched everything he made his name on - souful sampling, bragadocious raps, larger-than-life persona - for autotune crooning over synths. It was a bold move, which divided fans & critics at the time, but would be later be cited as a huge influence on the styles of artists like Drake, Travis Scott, Lil Uzi Vert and Juice WRLD, and taught Kanye creative & technical skills that he'd go on to use in making albums like MBDTF and Yeezus. You have to take risks in order to grow; every experiment, whether successful or failure, expands your range and teaches you new lessons that will help you on the road to doing bigger & better things.
There's a lot of different people my mind go to but god damn the world will never forget the music of David Bowie because this man did not repeat himself ONCE. This man had like 6 different personalities in the 70's ALONE. A true GOAT
He certainly repeated himself musically once or twice, although his sounds would grow. Ziggy/Aladdin/Pin Ups are all linked and that's also true for things like Low/Heroes and Heathen/Reality. Still tons of variation though, not only in his music but paintings and film.
Coldplay is my favorite band. Regardless of all the seemingly ignorant hate they receive, they went from UK acoustic, Post brit pop in their early years to experimental rock, pop rock, world music, gospel, Dance EDM, acoustic folk, classical music, cinematic ambient, choir music and more sub genres.Just recently they released a ten minute classically influenced soft rock ballad. Say what you want about them, but Coldplay does not follow what everyone wants them to do.
@@edjamaz4636 it's so funny cause i can be that type of snob with certain groups; i turn away when they start making generic pop, but with coldplay i feel like their pop is still very creative and instrumentally good (most of the time). it's surprising that even the snobbiest of people can't acknowledge universally loved pop songs like paradise or clocks or even recent ones like adventure of a lifetime or hymn for the weekend. like those are undeniably BANGERS
Like every single song on the album Viva la Vida is unique from each other yet it still feels incredibly cohesive. And even on albums where I do not enjoy every single song like "A Head Full of Dreams", it still creates such a celebratory, joyous vibe that I cannot help but just get sucked in. Similarly with Mylo Xyloto though that one feels way more manic and sad-happy. Also, this is just my opinion, but I find it funny that the only album I don't really enjoy as a full body of work is X&Y, and that was the album where the band was being weighed down by the neverending hatred towards them and tensions between the members. Soooooo yeah
I think there are people who get stale from doing one thing but there are some people where they just get more specific and defined as they progress. Wes Anderson is my favorite example of this because now his movies are so ridiculously unique that he’s at the point where literally nobody but him can make a movie in that style
6 minutes old and already this video is an instant classic. Also daft punk with Random Access Memories I think is a perfect example of "fuck it gonna do what we wanna do. Sorry not sorry that it's different"
I'm not as familiar with rap as you are but I love how passionately you speak about it! I love that I can take this idea, this passion that you have for art, and apply it to the art I consume. Great video as always!
lorde’s new album was the epitome of this. and people hated it because they expected melodrama 2, but it’s such an amazing summer album with what i believe are some of her best songs.
Dawn FM was a masterpiece, as is most of his bodies of work. completely agree with you. i didn’t love Kendrick’s new album, but i can respect that he did something he actually wanted to do.

This topic has intrigued me for awhile - since the 1920s each decade has had it’s own cultural characteristic seemingly up until the second half of the 2010s… now we are generally more interested in replicating/modernizing/combining the cultural things of past decades. But the curiosity for me is why this has happened and how long will this last.
Mac Miller started out with the “kids” and moved into a more RnB rap. Swimming had rap, RnB, and piano rap(2009) He never stopped changing which is why he’s one of the greatest. Also, at 7:19, that’s the Mac Miller “Self Care” instrumental where he LITERALLY switches the entire beat halfway through. Masterpiece song, Masterpiece vid.
Honestly, my favourite artist. Every single one of his projects sounded fresh, but still had that Mac Miller touch to them, they all had a specific sound...The man literally made Faces, one of the most self aware and dark hip hop projects ever made, and then went on to make GO:OD AM, a bright and fun sounding album, all in the span of a year. Wow. Self Care might be my fav song of all time.
Florence + The Machine has grown so much across her albums! I love the early and I love the new, the vibes are different, but all moving and captivating!
Leonardo Da Vinci was basically the embodiment of what you're talking about. Dude was involved in pretty much everything and was the original goat of switching it up
"like if we look at kanye this man is the definition of not doing what people want to see" "anytime he does anything, it becomes the biggest news" with the hitler fiasco, that has DEFINITELY aged well
Genndy tartakovsky is a textbook example of an artist who’s always switching things up. Each one of his animated projects is different and distinct. And that’s why he’s lasted so long in the field of animation. Hideki Anno is also good at switching it up. Whether you’re looking at his live action or anime works, he’s always doing something new.
Unironically I think you've switched up amazingly. Growing up watching your highschool comedy sketches and now watching the mini pop culture video essays has been amazing to see how you grow with your content while still keeping a unique vibe that's all your own has been awesome
If we are talking about artists changing and expirimenting with their sound, its impossible to leave out Radiohead. I truly believe Radiohead would be left into obscurity without Kid A, and the shift it was from OK computer. OK computer was this crazy, campy, emotional rollercoaster, showing (and borderline predicting) a dystopian society were weve all becomed Paranoid Androids, But Kid A completly forgets that, now having this bottomless, almost painfully empty, lonely, dark vibe, (i remind you this is a complement). Everything in its right place beautifully opens the doors to this new part of the bands mind, giving us a peak for whats about to come. From the busily complex The National Anthem, to it being followed by one of the best, most raw radiohead songs (how to disapear completely). This album has such amazing versitality and alterations to it its insane. As much as i dont worship Kid A as the average radiohead fan (i actually like amnesiac better lmaoooo) . Its unrealistic, almost offensive to ignore this drastic yet beautiful change in the bands discography.
I'm not sure if they would be left completely into obscurity considering OKC was hailed as a classic right upon release, but I believe they would have certainly broken up if they tried a conventional arena rock album as a follow up. Also this is a bit dark to say but I actually think Thom would be dead if they did OKC part 2. We would probably remember Radiohead as a once promising band who caught lightning in a bottle with this one album but eventually succumbed to public pressure. At least on this sense we live in the good timeline!
This is how I feel about Moon Knight. It’s my favorite series Marvel has ever done because there is not a single cameo from one of the main Marvel superheroes, it’s just like this little insane world of the main 4 characters, and one of those was the same actor playing two characters brilliantly. The directing style felt fresh and different and there was some thriller, horror, action vibes mixed with little breaths of comedy that made it so enjoyable for me. Not a lot of people agree with me but I LOVED it and felt so refreshed watching it.
I that about the MCU shows in general. They go from giant nerdy in joke with What if? to stand alone psychodrama with Moon Knight. I definitely don't like them all equally but I like that there's always a chance the next show is going to be something I really love. I can also just skip a show and watch the next one since they're not interconnected with each other. And the worst faith complaints are all "why is show not what I expected?!". Either the characters are doing something new, or new characters or just the show isn't like the other MCU show they liked. Or it's not Daredevil. And they don't seem to notice that everyone is saying that about different shows. Unlike the Netflix Marvel shows or Arrowverse where people mostly agree about which shows are the best and worst, there really is increasingly something for everyone in the MCU shows. And it's because of that choice we get Moon Knight and whatever the next really fun show will turn out to be.
Twenty One Pilots did this very well. Their spoken word, more piano-driven depressing melodies got them aa cult following, but they have updated their sound so much to be more popular mainstream, while keeping their signature sound. Their newest album is just strait up pop, while their 2010's albums are so recognizably them.
i like that they often do that even within one album! i don't really know their new stuff, but in regional at best, vessel, blurryface and trench every song just goes on it's own somewhere, in a completely different direction. it's just so fun!
I think my favorite band that could've fit into this video is "King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard". Part of their whole shtick is they try to make every album a different genre or concept than the last. They've done psychedelic rock, folk, thrash metal, jazz, synth pop and even spoken word audio books. It makes their whole line of work really fun to binge because it never sounds repetitive or blends together. You would think that this constant switching of sounds would cause fans to turn away, but they've released 20 records in the past decade and never disappointed their fans once. Anyways, great banger of a video as always Nathan! :)
Tomorrow is my last day of school and I'm honestly really scared to start highschool but I really want to say how much I appreciate your videos. Your videos always come out at the right time like when I'm feeling down or when I really am appreciating life or like right now at transitions in my life. I remember you saying that when you graduated that you listened to the graduation album so I plan to do the same. Love your videos man thank you
Just had my last day of high school yesterday. Ive got 3 pieces of advice. 1 Join things like clubs freshman year. 2 Don't let things pass you by. 3 Do not have a worldwide pandemic in the middle of your HS career.
All of the Beatles switched it up a lot in there solo careers even Ringo. And also they reinvented themselves as a band like 5 times in 5 years. Nick Cave is one of my favourite all round artists, he is a poet, Author, Screenwriter, singer, songwriter who has done everything love the man.
I think it really depends on how over-saturated an artist's sound, style, etc. is. If there's a lot of other people doing what they do, they yeah they would benefit on switching it up. But if no one else really does what they do, then they can stay the same.
i agree. Only switch it up if you want to. Like adele. I'm not a huge fan but i think she likes the type of music she makes and no one is doing the genre like her.
Honestly, i can´t think of an artist that better fits the description than David Bowie. The man did rock, dnb (and toured with NiN for this album), jazz, soul, funk, ambient music, soundtracks, was one of the founders of glam rock, has one of the most iconic album covers of all time and made it all classic. He literally reinvented himself until his last days by releasing an album (inspired by TPAB) about his death and coping with it without anyone knowing that he was dying. Truly a genius
Radiohead, went from making one of the best alternative rock albums ever made with ok computer and then went to experimental techno while still not losing what made them great, this is why they have such a legendary status.
A good example is how The Weeknd tried to do another House of Balloons type of music with Kissland but it blew up in his face and didn't really work out, so he switched it up with features and then Beauty Behind the Madness and then blew the fuck up.
Hard disagree. Kissland doesn’t sound like any of The Weeknd’s mixtape era. It’s similarly dark but with way fuller (less skeletal) production. It’s more commercial than House of Balloons or anything like that but it’s not all that mainstream (unlike his subsequent albums). I also think Kissland is dope because it foreshadows his experimentation with the 80s sound. It’s a very nice harmony between the earlier phase of his career and his later (recent) phase. Great album for me and an important artistic point in his discography.
@@XOclone9928 ngl After Hours is some of his best work. It may not seem like it now but in time most people will see that it stands toe to toe with his more iconic albums.
That's what is so incredible about The Clone Wars. It kept the good parts of Star Wars the same, while taking the bad parts and making them INSANELY better. Dozens of new planets, hundreds of new characters, and unique storylines while keeping the same nostalgia of the movies. I don't think Star Wars will ever be topped again until they decide to do a fresh trilogy with competent writers.
A really good example of an artist changing up their style is the band Talk Talk. In the 80s they were this new wave British pop rock band. Since they had a couple of hits, the record company said that they could do whatever they want. So, they stopped doing pop music and invented post-rock (a genre of rock music that sounds nothing like rock music at all) They had all this jazz experimentation and purposely badly tuned guitars. It was no longer about riffs or solos; it was all atmospheres. I think everyone should listen to their last album "Laughing Stock" though if you don't want to jump into the deep end, maybe listen to Spirit of Eden first. (sorry for being a nerd btw)
You didn’t mention her in this video, but this is what I appreciate about Lorde’s new album. I’ve seen so much hate for Solar Power since it’s such a different vibe from her other two albums, but I think that’s what’s so great about it. Its like people just want artists to recreate their most popular album, but if that’s the only goal they’ll never be able to recreate anything as good as the original. It’s necessary that artist evolve with their own passions, and even if you don’t like the direction they’ve gone in, the albums you do like will always be there to listen to.
Solar power is just not good lol also i dont always find this critique valid but u gotta understand that an album basically about chilling in new zealand beaches wasn't gonna connect with many people in 2021
Solar Power was really about the songwriting, imo. While I didn't vibe with the music at first (it was good, just not interesting), I've really come to like it. I saw her live earlier this month and the new songs really rounded out the show and made it very unique.
also to add, melodrama and pure heroine sounded super different from each other in both their lyrics and production! she’s amazing and switching it up each era
lowkey surprised you didnt mention beyonce - ever since b-day, no album of hers has been the same (sonically, visually, vocally, etc) and she BEEN switching it up her whole career. Crazy in love, Me, Myself, and I, Irreplaceable, Freakum Dress, Single Ladies, Love on Top, Don't Hurt Yourself, Blow, Countdown, the list goes on. Not only that but now she does film, has a fashion brand, etc.
Massive respect for Porter Robinson for releasing an album that was not just the sequel to his last project but completely reinvented his sound and lyrics, while still retaining exactly what made him so good in the first place. His sheer passion to pursue what he finds fresh and exciting in the current moment is why so many people stuck around for years waiting for his next release
Yeah, there’s his second album and also his Virtual Self stuff that are so different, but even before Worlds, his sound was harsh and heavy matching the fad of 2010 dubstep. Porter Robinson creates to his moods.
Doja is a great example as well. When ever she does a feature, she makes sure her sound matches the beat and the vibe. Also, she has done so many genres already like rock, pop, r&b, hip hop, rap, and who knows what’s next for her
Bo Burnham had his own unique style of comedy/music for years and then completely switched it up and dropped one of the most relevant projects of 2021 and it was the best piece of art he's made. But still he was never stuck in the box of stand up comic. Guy made music, comedy, tv show, movie (maybe the most relatable movie i've ever seen), and a god damn poetry book. He can do anything.
I’m so happy someone else agrees. Switching up sounds is one of my favorite things. I love getting something I’ve never heard from an artist. Kendrick’s new album is amazing yet people won’t give it credit cuz it’s not a bunch of bangers. It’s so disappointing to see that
I spend so much time consuming art without really thinking about it or how it evolves. Your videos always provide and interesting perspective and never disappoint.
I've always compared Kendrick to Radiohead in the way that no 2 of their albums sound entirely alike. They all fit into the broader rap and rock genres, but each album draws from a certain subgenre(s) to break the mold of what they did before.
Eh I feel like a lot of his movies use the same kitschy aesthetic and direction. Like you know what to expect when you walk into a Wes Anderson film. Fantastic Mr Fox is still goated tho
Finally someone speaking the truth! Fans who berate artists for deviating from the sound they know frustrates me because their discouraging them for pushing the art to a new place and moving us forward. If you want the same thing just listen to the old stuff smh
I like it when art is fresh, new, innovative and creative, but it always annoys me how people only stick to what they're familiar with, never even bothering to try something that is new and recognizable to them. It's kinda sad that artists that rely on art as their profit, just stick to what they usually do, to not drive off their mainstream audience. Art is very uninspiring these days :/
The weeknd has grown sooooooo much. I know every other artist you’ve mentioned has also done so but the weeknd went from continuously depressed and enjoyable low vibes to vibing to whatever life is putting him through. It’s such a beautiful change to see
Robert Pattinson should have been mentioned here aswell.

I didn't like it when it came out but in retrospect it's just as good as After Hours if not a little better

None of his albums are the same besides his first two, also Faces is an underrated masterpiece, literally his best project
Facts, all his albums are different and it’s gets better than more you listen to them
The one artist to whom i looked forward to his growth. I am still hurt by his death
Watching him grow from 2010 onwards was absolutely beautiful. That’s why his death hit so hard for me
Even though Zendaya is still young I like how she is always trying new projects. I have not watched Euphoria myself but that doesn't take away the fact that she went from doing Disney to portraying a person with a serious addiction problem. Not to mention her other projects like Malcolm and Marie and the Greatest Showman. Love her.
And then dune. A sci if movie
She plays the same quirky half rebel in every one of her shows nigga
But with actors it's a bit different. They have to do the roles they get. They can go after other roles but it's hard. Mathew McConnaghey is always talking about how he stopped doing movies for like 2 years because all he was getting was like romcom roles. He had to put his foot down to get something different. It's not easy for actors to just switch it up unless they were big drama actors trying out comedy or blockbuster roles. Like if Leo DiCaprio decided to star in the next James Gunn movie or something.
The real culprits are musicians and directors who refuse to switch things up. They have all the power and they get comfortable.

Aaliyah is a great example of this. Though she remained dominantly R&B, she stretched the limits of being an Urban Pop artist. She invented herself with each album, from a teen that rocked baggy clothes to a confident woman in a span of her short, but highly influential career.
I definitely approve of this. I like some of her songs but really that style she brought and the way she carried herself definitely was a evolution .
Yes! , she reminded me of Michael Jackson in the sense that, pop music videos in the 80s were just people singing infront of a camera changing scenes.
"urban pop"
so just r&b lol
I believe Aaliyah woulda given us a pop/rock phase the way her switches was goin

My man Beethoven was exactly this.

@26 Mic Yo I like yo stuff it Hella I like the SoundCloud rapper one

In the movie realm, Stanley Kubrick is the first person who came to mind. Just with his final four films he made a period piece, a horror, a Vietnam war movie, and an erotic thriller, and all four of which are widely considered masterpieces.
This video is about people keeping up with the times, but Kanye is actually ahead; literally influenced almost every rapper to listen to 808’s
Not no more, he lost it after he went bat shit crazy. Let's be honest with ourselves about that. Kendrick surpassed Kanye by light years...

@@user1990dm yea ik them, never connected with their sound
nathan bro i’m begging you keep making these videos, seeing a new nathan zed video in my feed is genuinely a top 5 feeling
Tyler is a very good example - every album is a distinct phase and each of them works within its own box which was different to the last
I think there are people who get stale from doing one thing but there are some people where they just get more specific and defined as they progress. Wes Anderson is my favorite example of this because now his movies are so ridiculously unique that he’s at the point where literally nobody but him can make a movie in that style
Same w taika waititi, both of their range is really good and they can kinda just make what they want
6 minutes old and already this video is an instant classic.
Also daft punk with Random Access Memories I think is a perfect example of "fuck it gonna do what we wanna do. Sorry not sorry that it's different"
That is what I love about Kanye, he is the definition of authenticity and artistry as far as I've seen and heard anything he has done
Donda was definitely authentic
Every album he made was so different, it’s insane. Ye da 🐐 no 🧢
I'm not as familiar with rap as you are but I love how passionately you speak about it! I love that I can take this idea, this passion that you have for art, and apply it to the art I consume. Great video as always!
lorde’s new album was the epitome of this. and people hated it because they expected melodrama 2, but it’s such an amazing summer album with what i believe are some of her best songs.
Wtf she still makes music Royals was heat
Dawn FM was a masterpiece, as is most of his bodies of work. completely agree with you. i didn’t love Kendrick’s new album, but i can respect that he did something he actually wanted to do.
Imagine thinking damn fm is a masterpiece and not liking kendrick album. Maybe because the subject matter in mr morale was too grown for a tik tok girl like you.
The Weeknd was terrible that’s why his album sales tanked

@@omelet-du-fromage9293 tell me about it. I had tickets to go see Haley in concert and then the pandemic hit and never got the chance. I'm still really bummed about it.
This is why I'm a huge fan of The Weeknd. He changes up his styles and personas every album.
Initially I was on the same boat of wanting him to return to his old sound, but now I love the sound of his newer albums too.
That is why he is one of the best today
fr i'm happy that when abel comes out with a new album, it comes with it's own vibe. lowkey imagine if every time he came out w something new it was just "house of balloons part 1,000,000", we wouldn't have gotten shit like dawn fm, starboy, after hours, kissland w it's own universe and character. it would just get boring.
Huge Weeknd fan myself from the older days and the only sound I wanted him to revisit was kissland other than that I loved his newer music. Dawn FM was fantastic!
That was to his detriment. He hasn't been good in year's because of it.
That is so true
Honestly Nevermind has made this video age perfectly
honestly yehh HAH in terms of music, it was the first thing i thought of
Mac Miller started out with the “kids” and moved into a more RnB rap.
Faces was a work of art
Florence + The Machine has grown so much across her albums! I love the early and I love the new, the vibes are different, but all moving and captivating!
Leonardo Da Vinci was basically the embodiment of what you're talking about. Dude was involved in pretty much everything and was the original goat of switching it up

Primal is soo good
@@victorzelo4304 I’m looking forward to the next season. I just know it’s gonna be worth the wait.
100% agreed, was going to comment about them. Every time they drop an album you don't know what you'll get.
Yessss
Well swid
Good luck in high school you got this
Just had my last day of high school yesterday. Ive got 3 pieces of advice. 1 Join things like clubs freshman year. 2 Don't let things pass you by. 3 Do not have a worldwide pandemic in the middle of your HS career.
You’ll be fine
You got this, stay dedicated and do what makes YOU happy and feel like the best person that you already are💯
All of the Beatles switched it up a lot in there solo careers even Ringo. And also they reinvented themselves as a band like 5 times in 5 years. Nick Cave is one of my favourite all round artists, he is a poet, Author, Screenwriter, singer, songwriter who has done everything love the man.
"If you DONT try something that people may not like, how else is it gonna be a Classic?!" - Ghandi
Radiohead, went from making one of the best alternative rock albums ever made with ok computer and then went to experimental techno while still not losing what made them great, this is why they have such a legendary status.
u syncing up u saying “in my head” with a clip of kendrick saying it at 3:23 did not go unnoticed
@@ericseni4875 agree I actually love that album after hours and kiss land are my favorite of his great discography
@@XOclone9928 ngl After Hours is some of his best work. It may not seem like it now but in time most people will see that it stands toe to toe with his more iconic albums.
Lmao, he wasn’t trying to do new “hob” with kiss land. You are absolutely wrong
(sorry for being a nerd btw)
no nerd would have a king crimson album as their profile pic. that's top tier shit, dawg.

Lorde
I was surprised by the solar power hate. I think it's a vibe
Beyoncé is absolutely one of those artists
Massive respect for Porter Robinson for releasing an album that was not just the sequel to his last project but completely reinvented his sound and lyrics, while still retaining exactly what made him so good in the first place. His sheer passion to pursue what he finds fresh and exciting in the current moment is why so many people stuck around for years waiting for his next release
Yeah, there’s his second album and also his Virtual Self stuff that are so different, but even before Worlds, his sound was harsh and heavy matching the fad of 2010 dubstep. Porter Robinson creates to his moods.
Soooooo much this.
Yessss, love him
This man predicted Drakes new album
Not in a good way
Doja is a great example as well.
Broooooo preach. I hate how if a piece doesn’t match peoples expectations they just get pissed and hate it
I thought about how Wes Anderson could do both his directing style is the same but every one of his movies are unique
It's a bubble but a nice bubble. Same with nolan
Eh I feel like a lot of his movies use the same kitschy aesthetic and direction. Like you know what to expect when you walk into a Wes Anderson film. Fantastic Mr Fox is still goated tho
Just to be clear I’m not hating on Wes Anderson, I’d class him as someone who’s refined his style and he’s definitely unique in broader cinema
Taylor’s reinvention with Folklore and Evermore was another unexpected and bold move
