I’m not surprised. They’re ideologically opposed. Most people in the industry would disagree with much of what Kanye has to say, when it comes to social and political topics. And since these will naturally come up in conversation, and in tabloids, there’s no reason to work with someone which such a startling contrast of viewpoints.
I really relate to what Gambino said. Ever since I was a baby, people have been trying to tell me what black folks do and don’t do when frankly, I don’t give a damn about their opinion.

In hindsight the era was great, however, in the moment Kanye aswell as Yeezus was being heavily bashed and criticized by audiences - just like the majority of people, chances are that one would have brushed of Kanyes statement as antics.

Amazing! The chokehold that Childish Gambino had over me in 2013 was intense. I am that weird black kid and i liked rap music without ever feeling like i could actually resonate with it. I wasn’t from the hood, i had never seen a gun let alone a gang banger in my life. When i first heard freaks and geeks and could understand the nuances and the references it’s like i finally understood how someone could be a true fan of someone. How someone could know every lyric to every song, every beat, it made me truly understand rap music. Childish Gambino made me confidant to just be me.Because the internet is still my favorite album and screen play.
Because the Internet became my favorite album of all time in 2014 and I don't think anything will ever top it at this point. I went through a full-blown existential crisis for 9 months last year and that album and story were ironically my anchor to reality lol

In HS I used to think that I would 100% have to marry Donald Glover one day because he was the only rapper I could truly relate to as a black nerd in a nearly all white private school. Those parts at the end of part three of the recent documentary series where he sounds like a crazy person talking to people and the guy had to cut the camera, I was like... what the hell is he on about... I remember hearing "3005" for the first time in the first ever Apple Music ad in theatres. It was so good from the moment I heard it, so after that movie in 2013/14ish I immediately went home and streamed Because the Internet. I still listen to that album and all of his discography to this day! :)

After watching Season 4 ep. 8 The Goof Who Sat By The Door I had to come back to this video. He was called corny, “white acting” and all kinds of stupid stuff because he didn’t fit into the common narrative of what a black man is supposed to be. He was nerdy and weird and never changed who he was throughout his career. To me, he’s inspiring because he stayed true to himself no matter anyone thought about him. I don’t believe a lot of people in the entertainment industry are that brave or maybe just don’t have the luxury to do so. Donald GLover and Kanye West are the two biggest inspirations in my life creatively, not musically. I'm not saying that as hyperbole. They look at music the same way I do, a vehicle for progression and expressive art, not just a way to make a cool or catchy song and make cash. I approach writing songs and projects visually, audibly, emotionally and create a world for the project, and it feels good to see artists on this level doing the same type of work. The creation of those worlds leads to other creations besides music... it leads to stories, to film, to fashion and art, to technology and new types of play... music is a lens and a tool, not just a "hobby".
Bro! It’s incredibly difficult to find people who thinks this way about art. I think of art the same way. That’s why both childish and Kanye can move between different mediums well. And it’s not just about approaching things with all senses, but the intuitiveness of it. And the intellect of it. Poetry is nothing different than painting. A different medium with different tools. But you can translate ideas as though you are translating a language, there’s no barrier unless we draw the line . Just like categorization, you automatically put a limit. Michael Jackson’s loved music, he didn’t think genre. How you use your tools and what you do with your tools tells how much of a great creative you are. It’s easy to fall into what things should be, but not much explores what could be. And what could be is the voice of the creator . It’s the eyes of the creator.There’s soo much to be said about this subject.
Kanye inspired me to get back into fashion, I thought I would never go back, I even started a new graduation but then Kanye just showed up and changed my whole perspective in the fashion world. I understand that his fans love him for his music, but he is an Artist and he likes to explore his full potential. Donald is amazing, I remember him in community, the This is America video was iconic, he really uses some surrealism just like Kanye in his work, and Atlanta is juts a masterpiece.

Because of the internet made me hype, laugh, think, and cry when I was only 16 in 2013. I was fan before Camp and I’m glad to see more people give him the recognition he deserves. This man is beyond the norm and the trend.

Super insightful analysis, very thorough and articulate. It makes me sad because true artistry, not just in rap but in all mediums, is often overlooked because people don't have the time or patience to understand it completely, they're always too busy. Not to blame society, everyone feels a degree of self-importance and therefore cannot all spare the necessary time to recognize the meaning and philosophy behind its conception. They dismiss things that require more than a surface level glance over, they cannot understand the visceral process beyond what they immediately see or hear. Maybe I'm preachy, but even personally, if I could share this video with people who are willing to patiently watch the entire thing, then there's already a connection. The truth is, however, as a ratio I could share this with ten people I know and only one of them would actually recognize the depth or these two great artists.
This is precisely why I think most of us have hard time making friends in adulthood. Some people are sleepwalking through life, while others like to pay attention to the finer details of everyday life. The brain is operating on two different frequencies.
I don’t know much about Donald but I enjoy many of his works. I was really into Community and watched a lot of their behind the scenes and interviews and I remember many of the actors mentioning how busy Donald was basically when he wasn’t acting he was always on his laptop, working on something. This video essay just made me realise how much effort he’s putting in that we may not see… Didn’t expect to watch all the way through (haven’t done so in a while my attention span is shit) but I’m so glad I did that was beautiful..
I really loved this analysis and have lots of respect for both artists, but especially Donald Glover. Personally, I think they are definitely some of, if not the most, talented artists of the modern era. Childish Gambino has breached so many industries, from standup comedy to becoming a 70’s funk pop artist on “Awaken, My Love!”. Being truly talented and unique is tough, but both Kanye and Donald have embraced that. Both excel in different ways. I personally think that Donald always makes a stand in his music. From him identifying struggles of our internet-absorbed world and embracing his self- labeled social awkwardness to singing to his child and taking stands on oppression of black people in America, he is very influential. What may be conveyed as self-absorbed ego due to his firm self belief is Kanye just being confident. His struggle to gain public affirmation, but still contributing huge influence in many fields makes him very influential. Both have broke a glass ceiling, but both have not done it easily.

This was such a deep and insightful look into the careers of these two men, these two artists. The misfits of their respective decades, defying expectations through sheer self-confidence and willpower, to come out on top as visionaries. The acoustic Redbone guitar in the background was also very subtly scratching at my ears until I focused it down, and a huge smile just lit up my face when I recognised it. That's a beautiful little touch, mate!

it's funny how ive been watching Donald since Derrick Comedy days doing all his skits in school to my friends that was back in 7th grade or 2008 or 2007 something like that and now look at how much he has risen. That's my inspiration.

I think the thing about Gambino and the reason he's got such a mixed reception is that he walks that fine line between doing something groundbreaking and doing something that falls apart when you poke it wrong, and he almost has a similar issue to Kanye where he kind find the right way to translate what he wants right. For a lot of people, there are maybe one or two songs off each record that are standout tracks, but essentially he never really proved that he had the fundamental groundwork for a lot of people to take him seriously as an artist. To bring up that Kendrick comparison he never quite had that well paced, tight writing of a Section 80 to the more conceptual Good Kid/TPAB/DAMN that makes you actually take him seriously before slowly unpacking the record even more and finding much deeper meaning. It really wasn't until This Is America where he came out with something explosive where he really proved himself and his fundamentals, but then with 3.15.20 he essentially took the momentum and threw it into a completely different, muted path. He's not quite mastered how to properly market himself and is always in the shadows of his peers as a result.
That is probably the only thing that breaks apart the Kanye and Gambino comparison. Camp (and the projects before and a little after it) is a mediocre album at best, there are the common complaints that it hasn't aged well and that his corny lyrics and delivery hurt the album but as much as Gambino fans try to dismiss those points they never truly deny it. You'll only see fans say that it's good but when Donald himself never comes back to Camp in any shape or form then you know it's a album that should be left in the past. BTI is a good project but it still has that left over new age Eminem/Camp era delivery in some places. Where the break off of the Kanye/Gambino comparison starts is during this era and how you perceive it. During this time began what many would say is the birth of new/crazy Kanye something that has split his image and fans to this day whereas Donald's issue more so had to do with him being seen as the Oreo, only for backpackers, corny plus on top of that he wanted to portray the character of "the boy" in certain interviews (not saying what he said in those interviews are somehow invalid because of that). I'd say a more reasonable comparison would be pre 2004/CD Kanye as both were told they couldn't do certain things especially as a black man who had to fit that image for both blacks and whites yet those same people still saw their talent. Both weren't seen as the typical "hard" rapper but still wanted to prove their talent by showing a different view. Yes, Yeezus Kanye was told the same things towards fashion but the issue lied more with how the public saw his "crazy" antics at that time rather than what he said specifically like how Glover did when he said he was the best rapper. On the note of Glover's best rapper comments the rappers he said he was better than most of them are better rappers than him (at least to me) especially at that time where he had only released BTI, an album that to most was his only decent project. Awaken,my love spawned his biggest hit with Redbone and his most well received album to date, only criticism being that it shows it's influences heavily. Around this point and onward Donald gained massive respect from every one but his inconsistent methods really showed. I don't really count This is America as his biggest song as the music video is the only reason it got popular but his respect only grew more from that on top of Atlanta, a few singles, and acting roles but that is pretty much it at the moment. You might say his career is good but to most outside of his fanbase he has never had an album that dominated the medium only really moments. His most recent album being a perfect example of this inconsistent method as while fans swear it's ahead of it's time the general public on the other hand has already forgotten about it and sad part is that I don't think there is a bad song on it. The choice to have nearly nothing from the album cover, promotion/rollout, song titles might work for the message of the album but when around that time you said you are retiring the Gambino name it really just comes across as wasted potential a term that ,if he did retire then, would be what I'd call his career.
@@tylerreede6375 I have to really disagree. Obviously CAMP is the weakpoint of his career but BTI, STN MTN/Kauai, ROYALTY, and Culdesac are really all gems. His 2010-2014 loosee run is great too. All still so much better than Awaken my Love imo. Culdesac and Royalty's consistency is pretty underrated.

I will admit though that I was a little harsh in some places.

Kevin Abstract!!! In many ways Kevin is the direct byproduct of both Ye and Gambino and there's a lot of evidence to back it up. I think he would probably tell you so himself. First off, some of the members of BROCKHAMPTON quite literally met on Kanyetothe through a post Kevin made back in 2011, so there's that. But also, Kevin wrote an entire article back in 2014 detailing how Gambino paved the way for him as a creative!!! You can't even make this stuff up... He was 17 at the time and it was right around when he dropped his album MTV1987 and was still trying to make a name for himself. The article is called "How Childish Gambino Made Things Easier for Kids Like Me" and here's a direct quote from it that perfectly shows the continued ripple effect of influence that Ye and Gambino had on him: “Kanye gave people careers off of a sound he made with an album. He kicked down doors and made it possible for guys like Cudi and Gambino to work. Gambino is doing the same for kids like me-kids who are in their bedroom, spending hours trying to create something that’s bigger than the music. Bigger than uploading a song on SoundCloud. It’s bigger than themselves. Gambino has created a world and all of his fans have gotten lost in it. They want to know what comes next. Where does the story go? That inspires the fuck out of me. That’s what I’m doing with my art, and that’s how Childish Gambino made things easier for kids like me. He made it clear” Kanye -> Donald Glover -> Kevin Abstract I could go on detailing all the parallels of why Kevin is a byproduct of both Ye and Gambino but maybe that'll have to be a full video haha. I used to listen to Brockhampton a lot. These days not so much. There are songs on their last album I love. I’m ngl Kevin is one of my lesser favorite members of the group but I respect that he fronted the whole thing and a lot of it was his vision I think that people like Donald totally paved the way for something like then and I didn’t know about that article so that’s super cool. I think something id like to see more from them is art that is less random, or less melodramatic. I know that’s crazy judge mental, but sometimes when I listen to him in interviews i feel like he’s a bit lost in the sauce of these big ideas he has because he wants to the the first of stuff, but it makes it seem like he gets overwhelmed and doesn’t have time to consider why he’s making what he’s making. I think they have a lot of potential. My favorite rapper is my friend lil QWERTY and he’d probably get mad at me for sayin this on a public RUclips comment but man QWERTY is a fuckin brilliant writer for music and comedy and I love the music videos we make, and we got some hella dope ideas in the works. @@tallskeleton I'll forever appreciate BROCKHAMPTON and what they accomplished because similar to how you first heard BTI when you were a senior in high school, I first heard the SAT trilogy around that time in my life. I think there's definitely something to be said for the albums and artists we listen to in such transitional periods of our lives, and how they tend to have they biggest impact on us! Just the idea of a bunch of guys coming together off of nothing but a dream and making it completely independently, many of whom met though the internet, was so inspiring to see. Although I don't think they ever quite reached the same level of magic they had during the SAT trilogy, I think the narrative that they fell off is completely unfair. The music they released on their next 3 albums has some of their best work sonically, I think it just lacked the whole group aspect and hunger they initially had overall. Unfortunately I know what you mean when you say Kevin has been a bit lost lately and I would agree. It's like he has visions for all sorts of projects but tends to announce things before they even really get rolling, and then later abandons them. Reminds me a lot of Ye actually haha. Maybe being in a group led to some of that though? Just having to balance so many things at once? I'm not sure we'll see where he goes from here I'm hoping he can focus in on things more. I truly believe he has the potential to be as influential as someone like Donald Glover when we look back in 10 years time. Can't forget he's only 25, a year younger than Kanye was when he dropped The College Dropout, and 5 years younger than Gambino was when he released BTI. Can't say Kevin doesn't have the drive and the vision he's been constantly creating ever since he was in middle school. There's the old story that he called up Def Jam asking for a deal when he was like 11 lmao. Also I'm going to have to check out Lil Qwerty's stuff and I would agree with you that Peggy might be the most impressive rapper in hip-hop right now! Hoping he works with Ye at one point he's another one that lists Ye as his biggest influence. I remember listening to him talk about Ye in that interview with Cambridge he did. donald glover has literally shaped a lot of my teenage years- finding his music on pandora in 2013, the spark of mutual understanding and connection whenever I shared with someone new that I'm a big fan of his music (before redbone blew him tf up), the nostalgia, the hours of listening to his comedy and finding it hilarious every time, the role model to show that I don't have to fit the stereotype of the spicy latina and it doesn't make me any less latina just how how he's not any less black (i.e.: "real ****** i rep those, why though? cause i said so.") I don't necessarily relate to his experiences but his way of thinking and awareness has always made me really admire him

Amazing content as always. These two show that anybody with real success has done so by not allowing themselves to be boxed into any one thing. It’s always amazed me how multi talented they are but the key is they never thought they couldn’t achieve any of these things to begin with. I think their biggest connection is the ability to start a conversation. When I listen to yeezus, or watch teddy Perkins in Atlanta, I leave with less answers, and more to talk and think about. They are open minded and want to share the faith they have in themselves with others. Communication is messy, but ideas and principles are foundational. I’m really thankful to have artists like Donald and ye today.
I've always seen the similarities of these two. When you see the hunger of two Artists and the personification of confidence, it's hard not to ignore. The depth in the details of their careers emphasized this. This video was so eloquently put together.
I think this video finally helped me understand Kanye. I knew he was talented, and have enjoyed some of his work, but didn't really "get it" before. Learning much more about Donald Glover, whom I don't know much about beyond his time on Community and making "This is America", was also a treat.

Being able to look back at that fork, through this timeless video, and knowing at the same time its outcome made this even more valuable. I think this video unintentionally explains why Kanye became what he became. Kanye and Glover’s 2013s remain unmatched. Yeezus and Because The Internet are arguably both of their respective artists’ peaks musically. Both have gone onto great things, but the sheer talent, focus, and passion put into these projects is insane.

Its nice to find something like this to give us some insight and comprehension about these two. I wasn’t a fan of Kanye because of a lot of the statements that were in this video. But when his wife divorced him and social media made it seem like he was crazy because he wasn’t willing to just throw away his love for his wife and even though the ink was still wet on their divorce papers he should just be okay with her bringing new men into his kids I found myself expectedly relating with him. In 2013 I went through a break up with my fiancé of 9 years who was also the mother of my two daughters and I was treated the same way. My mental health during that time was very unstable. I began to question if I was crazy because I couldn’t just throw the idea of our family in the trash and I was tired of everyone telling me “just get over it” On Christmas Day 2021 was when I realized I may have misinterpreted Kanye after watching his concert In Los Angeles. On Amazon prime. Since then I’ve been digging deep into his discography and realizing the genius in the music he’s given us and how unselfish he was with the music he was giving other artist when he first hit the industry.

This is a beautiful documentary/commentary, i wish more people saw artists for what they are instead of the wild, weird, out there individuals the media often portrays them to be, its often overlooked how much effort these two put into their work and art and rather everything "negative" about them is pointed out by media outlets often just looking for attention. Even up to recently kanye is being looked upon as the crazy guy that raps, when he has been doing so much more and trying to show everything things for what they were. Amazing! The chokehold that Childish Gambino had over me in 2013 was intense. I am that weird black kid and i liked rap music without ever feeling like i could actually resonate with it. When i first heard freaks and geeks and could understand the nuances and the references it’s like i finally understood how someone could be a true fan of someone. How someone could know every lyric to every song, every beat, it made me truly understand rap music. He was nerdy and weird and never changed who he was throughout his career. To me, he’s inspiring because he stayed true to himself no matter anyone thought about him. I don’t believe a lot of people in the entertainment industry are that brave or maybe just don’t have the luxury to do so. Donald GLover and Kanye West are the two biggest inspirations in my life creatively, not musically. I'm not saying that as hyperbole. They look at music the same way I do, a vehicle for progression and expressive art, not just a way to make a cool or catchy song and make cash. I approach writing songs and projects visually, audibly, emotionally and create a world for the project, and it feels good to see artists on this level doing the same type of work. The creation of those worlds leads to other creations besides music... it leads to stories, to film, to fashion and art, to technology and new types of play... music is a lens and a tool, not just a "hobby".
Bro! It’s incredibly difficult to find people who thinks this way about art. I think of art the same way. That’s why both childish and Kanye can move between different mediums well. And it’s not just about approaching things with all senses, but the intuitiveness of it. And the intellect of it. Poetry is nothing different than painting. A different medium with different tools. But you can translate ideas as though you are translating a language, there’s no barrier unless we draw the line . Just like categorization, you automatically put a limit. Michael Jackson’s loved music, he didn’t think genre. How you use your tools and what you do with your tools tells how much of a great creative you are. It’s easy to fall into what things should be, but not much explores what could be. And what could be is the voice of the creator . It’s the eyes of the creator.There’s soo much to be said about this subject.
Kanye inspired me to get back into fashion, I thought I would never go back, I even started a new graduation but then Kanye just showed up and changed my whole perspective in the fashion world. I understand that his fans love him for his music, but he is an Artist and he likes to explore his full potential. Donald is amazing, I remember him in community, the This is America video was iconic, he really uses some surrealism just like Kanye in his work, and Atlanta is juts a masterpiece.

Super insightful analysis, very thorough and articulate. It makes me sad because true artistry, not just in rap but in all mediums, is often overlooked because people don't have the time or patience to understand it completely, they're always too busy. Not to blame society, everyone feels a degree of self-importance and therefore cannot all spare the necessary time to recognize the meaning and philosophy behind its conception. They dismiss things that require more than a surface level glance over, they cannot understand the visceral process beyond what they immediately see or hear. Maybe I'm preachy, but even personally, if I could share this video with people who are willing to patiently watch the entire thing, then there's already a connection. The truth is, however, as a ratio I could share this with ten people I know and only one of them would actually recognize the depth or these two great artists.

I don’t know much about Donald but I enjoy many of his works. I was really into Community and watched a lot of their behind the scenes and interviews and I remember many of the actors mentioning how busy Donald was basically when he wasn’t acting he was always on his laptop, working on something. This video essay just made me realise how much effort he’s putting in that we may not see…

I really loved this analysis and have lots of respect for both artists, but especially Donald Glover. Personally, I think they are definitely some of, if not the most, talented artists of the modern era. Childish Gambino has breached so many industries, from standup comedy to becoming a 70’s funk pop artist on “Awaken, My Love!”. Being truly talented and unique is tough, but both Kanye and Donald have embraced that. Both excel in different ways. I personally think that Donald always makes a stand in his music. From him identifying struggles of our internet-absorbed world and embracing his self- labeled social awkwardness to singing to his child and taking stands on oppression of black people in America, he is very influential. What may be conveyed as self-absorbed ego due to his firm self belief is Kanye just being confident. His struggle to gain public affirmation, but still contributing huge influence in many fields makes him very influential. Both have broke a glass ceiling, but both have not done it easily.

This was such a deep and insightful look into the careers of these two men, these two artists. The misfits of their respective decades, defying expectations through sheer self-confidence and willpower, to come out on top as visionaries.
The acoustic Redbone guitar in the background was also very subtly scratching at my ears until I focused it down, and a huge smile just lit up my face when I recognised it. That's a beautiful little touch, mate!

I think the thing about Gambino and the reason he's got such a mixed reception is that he walks that fine line between doing something groundbreaking and doing something that falls apart when you poke it wrong, and he almost has a similar issue to Kanye where he kind find the right way to translate what he wants right. For a lot of people, there are maybe one or two songs off each record that are standout tracks, but essentially he never really proved that he had the fundamental groundwork for a lot of people to take him seriously as an artist. To bring up that Kendrick comparison he never quite had that well paced, tight writing of a Section 80 to the more conceptual Good Kid/TPAB/DAMN that makes you actually take him seriously before slowly unpacking the record even more and finding much deeper meaning. It really wasn't until This Is America where he came out with something explosive where he really proved himself and his fundamentals, but then with 3.15.20 he essentially took the momentum and threw it into a completely different, muted path. He's not quite mastered how to properly market himself and is always in the shadows of his peers as a result.
That is probably the only thing that breaks apart the Kanye and Gambino comparison. Camp (and the projects before and a little after it) is a mediocre album at best, there are the common complaints that it hasn't aged well and that his corny lyrics and delivery hurt the album but as much as Gambino fans try to dismiss those points they never truly deny it. You'll only see fans say that it's good but when Donald himself never comes back to Camp in any shape or form then you know it's a album that should be left in the past.
BTI is a good project but it still has that left over new age Eminem/Camp era delivery in some places. Where the break off of the Kanye/Gambino comparison starts is during this era and how you perceive it. During this time began what many would say is the birth of new/crazy Kanye something that has split his image and fans to this day whereas Donald's issue more so had to do with him being seen as the Oreo, only for backpackers, corny plus on top of that he wanted to portray the character of "the boy" in certain interviews (not saying what he said in those interviews are somehow invalid because of that). I'd say a more reasonable comparison would be pre 2004/CD Kanye as both were told they couldn't do certain things especially as a black man who had to fit that image for both blacks and whites yet those same people still saw their talent. Both weren't seen as the typical "hard" rapper but still wanted to prove their talent by showing a different view. Yes, Yeezus Kanye was told the same things towards fashion but the issue lied more with how the public saw his "crazy" antics at that time rather than what he said specifically like how Glover did when he said he was the best rapper. On the note of Glover's best rapper comments the rappers he said he was better than most of them are better rappers than him (at least to me) especially at that time where he had only released BTI, an album that to most was his only decent project.
Awaken,my love spawned his biggest hit with Redbone and his most well received album to date, only criticism being that it shows it's influences heavily. Around this point and onward Donald gained massive respect from every one but his inconsistent methods really showed. I don't really count This is America as his biggest song as the music video is the only reason it got popular but his respect only grew more from that on top of Atlanta, a few singles, and acting roles but that is pretty much it at the moment. You might say his career is good but to most outside of his fanbase he has never had an album that dominated the medium only really moments. His most recent album being a perfect example of this inconsistent method as while fans swear it's ahead of it's time the general public on the other hand has already forgotten about it and sad part is that I don't think there is a bad song on it. The choice to have nearly nothing from the album cover, promotion/rollout, song titles might work for the message of the album but when around that time you said you are retiring the Gambino name it really just comes across as wasted potential a term that ,if he did retire then, would be what I'd call his career.
@@tylerreede6375 I have to really disagree. Obviously CAMP is the weakpoint of his career but BTI, STN MTN/Kauai, ROYALTY, and Culdesac are really all gems. His 2010-2014 loosee run is great too. All still so much better than Awaken my Love imo. Culdesac and Royalty's consistency is pretty underrated.
@@otterdonnelly9959 I agree that some of the stuff off those projects is great, I especially prefer how he raps on Kauai more than on BTI although stuff like Culdesac has that weak delivery Donald always had around that time. The inconsistent stuff comes in once you consider those are mixtapes and I wouldn't go as far as to say they are better than Awaken my love. I will admit though that I was a little harsh in some places.

In many ways Kevin is the direct byproduct of both Ye and Gambino and there's a lot of evidence to back it up. I think he would probably tell you so himself.
First off, some of the members of BROCKHAMPTON quite literally met on Kanyetothe through a post Kevin made back in 2011, so there's that. But also, Kevin wrote an entire article back in 2014 detailing how Gambino paved the way for him as a creative!!! You can't even make this stuff up... He was 17 at the time and it was right around when he dropped his album MTV1987 and was still trying to make a name for himself. The article is called "How Childish Gambino Made Things Easier for Kids Like Me" and here's a direct quote from it that perfectly shows the continued ripple effect of influence that Ye and Gambino had on him:
“Kanye gave people careers off of a sound he made with an album. He kicked down doors and made it possible for guys like Cudi and Gambino to work. Gambino is doing the same for kids like me-kids who are in their bedroom, spending hours trying to create something that’s bigger than the music. Bigger than uploading a song on SoundCloud. It’s bigger than themselves. Gambino has created a world and all of his fans have gotten lost in it. They want to know what comes next. Where does the story go? That inspires the fuck out of me. That’s what I’m doing with my art, and that’s how Childish Gambino made things easier for kids like me. He made it clear”

I used to listen to Brockhampton a lot. These days not so much. There are songs on their last album I love. I’m ngl Kevin is one of my lesser favorite members of the group but I respect that he fronted the whole thing and a lot of it was his vision
I think that people like Donald totally paved the way for something like then and I didn’t know about that article so that’s super cool.
I think something id like to see more from them is art that is less random, or less melodramatic. I know that’s crazy judge mental, but sometimes when I listen to him in interviews i feel like he’s a bit lost in the sauce of these big ideas he has because he wants to the the first of stuff, but it makes it seem like he gets overwhelmed and doesn’t have time to consider why he’s making what he’s making.
I think they have a lot of potential.

@@tallskeleton I'll forever appreciate BROCKHAMPTON and what they accomplished because similar to how you first heard BTI when you were a senior in high school, I first heard the SAT trilogy around that time in my life. I think there's definitely something to be said for the albums and artists we listen to in such transitional periods of our lives, and how they tend to have they biggest impact on us!
Just the idea of a bunch of guys coming together off of nothing but a dream and making it completely independently, many of whom met though the internet, was so inspiring to see. Although I don't think they ever quite reached the same level of magic they had during the SAT trilogy, I think the narrative that they fell off is completely unfair. The music they released on their next 3 albums has some of their best work sonically, I think it just lacked the whole group aspect and hunger they initially had overall.
Unfortunately I know what you mean when you say Kevin has been a bit lost lately and I would agree. It's like he has visions for all sorts of projects but tends to announce things before they even really get rolling, and then later abandons them. Reminds me a lot of Ye actually haha.
Maybe being in a group led to some of that though? Just having to balance so many things at once? I'm not sure we'll see where he goes from here I'm hoping he can focus in on things more. I truly believe he has the potential to be as influential as someone like Donald Glover when we look back in 10 years time. Can't forget he's only 25, a year younger than Kanye was when he dropped The College Dropout, and 5 years younger than Gambino was when he released BTI. Can't say Kevin doesn't have the drive and the vision he's been constantly creating ever since he was in middle school. There's the old story that he called up Def Jam asking for a deal when he was like 11 lmao.
Also I'm going to have to check out Lil Qwerty's stuff and I would agree with you that Peggy might be the most impressive rapper in hip-hop right now! Hoping he works with Ye at one point he's another one that lists Ye as his biggest influence. I remember listening to him talk about Ye in that interview with Cambridge he did.

donald glover has literally shaped a lot of my teenage years- finding his music on pandora in 2013, the spark of mutual understanding and connection whenever I shared with someone new that I'm a big fan of his music (before redbone blew him tf up), the nostalgia, the hours of listening to his comedy and finding it hilarious every time, the role model to show that I don't have to fit the stereotype of the spicy latina and it doesn't make me any less latina just how how he's not any less black (i.e.: "real ****** i rep those, why though? cause i said so.")
I don't necessarily relate to his experiences but his way of thinking and awareness has always made me really admire him

Amazing content as always. These two show that anybody with real success has done so by not allowing themselves to be boxed into any one thing. It’s always amazed me how multi talented they are but the key is they never thought they couldn’t achieve any of these things to begin with.

I think their biggest connection is the ability to start a conversation. When I listen to yeezus, or watch teddy Perkins in Atlanta, I leave with less answers, and more to talk and think about. They are open minded and want to share the faith they have in themselves with others. Communication is messy, but ideas and principles are foundational. I’m really thankful to have artists like Donald and ye today.

It probably is very hard to have this video up considering what happened. It is also a hard video to watch and understand now, as the perspective has changed so much in the past 10 months. But however hard it gets, I urge you not to take it down.
This video has become a time piece. A view through a window of what Kanye was a year ago. A view onto a person that stood at a fork in their path and chose the wrong one. Being able to look back at that fork, through this timeless video, and knowing at the same time its outcome made this even more valuable. I think this video unintentionally explains why Kanye became what he became. Kanye and Glover’s 2013s remain unmatched. Yeezus and Because The Internet are arguably both of their respective artists’ peaks musically. Both have gone onto great things, but the sheer talent, focus, and passion put into these projects is insane.
Yeezus is not arguably Kanye’s musical peak at ALL.

Its nice to find something like this to give us some insight and comprehension about these two. I wasn’t a fan of Kanye because of a lot of the statements that were in this video. But when his wife divorced him and social media made it seem like he was crazy because he wasn’t willing to just throw away his love for his wife and even though the ink was still wet on their divorce papers he should just be okay with her bringing new men into his kids I found myself expectedly relating with him.
In 2013 I went through a break up with my fiancé of 9 years who was also the mother of my two daughters and I was treated the same way. My mental health during that time was very unstable. I began to question if I was crazy because I couldn’t just throw the idea of our family in the trash and I was tired of everyone telling me “just get over it”
On Christmas Day 2021 was when I realized I may have misinterpreted Kanye after watching his concert In Los Angeles. On Amazon prime. Since then I’ve been digging deep into his discography and realizing the genius in the music he’s given us and how unselfish he was with the music he was giving other artist when he first hit the industry.

I remember right after Gambino dropped “Freaks & Geeks” I was in like 6th grade and I wrote on the white board that he would be one of the biggest rappers ever.
A lot of kids were like wtf are you talking about and I’m like just watch, this dude is more talented than a lot of others.
I did the same with Tyler as well.
I wasn’t surprised when they broke their glass ceilings and got the recognition they deserved.

This is a beautiful documentary/commentary, i wish more people saw artists for what they are instead of the wild, weird, out there individuals the media often portrays them to be, its often overlooked how much effort these two put into their work and art and rather everything "negative" about them is pointed out by media outlets often just looking for attention. Even up to recently kanye is being looked upon as the crazy guy that raps, when he has been doing so much more and trying to show everything things for what they were. It has to be extremely upsetting to know that the same people you are trying to educate and provide better lives for are the same ones clowning you. I wish both Donald and Kanye got the true respect they both deserve.
Everyone comments that Donald Glover's a genius. And they usually say something like "he's the next Prince", Kanye, Spike Lee or whoever their favorite artist is.

Thank you for making his beautifully written and edited video essay. A lot of the time I over look these albums as the it trying to be “deep” in which it is. I didn’t realize how much more goes into the music and the message behind it. It’s super inspiring to see two people who are just trying to prove themselves, and to other who don’t believe in them. Makes me want to take the time and do that with myself too.
