On 11/20-21, Amtrak ran Siemens Charger test train up from Philadelphia to NYC and then up to Croton Harmon via the Empire Connection and Metro-North's Hudson Line to test cab signal compatibility and measure third rail clearances. With advanced notice, I was able to catch the train at Edison NJ, New York Penn, Riverdale NY, and Elizabeth NJ. Enjoy =)
Also the emissions on these units are impressive. They’re all diesel but don’t seem to smoke up the place in confined spaces. I heard the potential dual mode versions of these are supposed to utilize the 3rd rail beyond terminal areas in revenue service. I’m looking forward to it while holding on to my beloved Genesis locomotives.
Metro North units are confirmed to be duel mode
I hope so, but it’s a bit difficult to power a train with just one locomotive with a third rail pickup. I hope they find some efficient way to power a whole train with a locomotive using 600-750V DC. That would be impressive
The existing Chargers have a third rail shoe installed, but it's not connected to anything. Metro-North has ordered Chargers with a traditional dual-mode. Amtrak has ordered Chargers with either a battery car or a pantagraph car behind them. The ones with battery cars will be used for Empire Services, running on battery power in NYP, and diesel everywhere else. The ones with pantograph cars will be used for regional and long-hall services that head south on the NEC, but continue past electrification.
Hello Northeasttrainman. Well said, as the Genesis units are my favorite as well. Cool to see something new, but keep the older equipment around, too. As the saying goes, don't put all of our eggs in one basket! NJT is amazing with the many types of motive power on their roster!😃👍
Nice! Judging from your video, it looks like 342 lead the way from Philly to NYP, looped at Sunnyside, then ran to Croton Harmon, where they switched the locomotives around. Since 340 was leading after dark & all 3 ALCs were coupled together. I was surprised they didn’t change ends in NYP & lead with 301 to Croton Harmon. Interesting.
301 was equipped with test equipment and not allowed to lead. Hence the double diesel formation with the 40 and 42.
Guessing they got special permission to run the diesels on the test train in Penn, at least the tier 4 engines won't smoke up the place.
No diesels allowed in NY Penn Station!!!! I hope someone called the cops for having diesels running in NYP, lol. Like I said, if I didn't have to be up early I would've chased it as well. Glad you were able to get them at different locations.
Riverdale and Elizabeth wouldn't have happened if not for that fire at Brick Church axing my original plan to take the train back to Gladstone after catching the test train at NYP lol. Ben and I ended up driving to the last two locations, then all the way back to my car at Gladstone. I didn't get home until like 4 am lmao.
Great footage! I wasn't able to catch the return run at Riverdale, but I managed to get one of the two runs there.
Excellent video! Very beautiful captures! 💯
Nice! Did you see the HHP-8 test train yet?
3 years later we see these on The NEC & Empire Service. With Venture Cars. Running in passenger service hopefully Amtrak could upgrade the speeds from 80 to 110 or 125
So that’s where the chargers ran away to! Just seen them sitting in the yard at 30th Street station!
How Do I join your Facebook Group to get a heads up on Amtrak Test Train
3 years from now these will enter service on the Northeast corridor with Venture Cars, An APV for electricity, an ALC-42E, with a top speed of 125 MPH/201 KMH, running the NER, Keystone, Vermonter, Valley Flyer, Hartford line, Pennsylvanian, Palmetto, Carolinian, & Service From Philly-Reading NYC - Scranton, Allentown - NYC in the future. Tbh The late 2020s - Early 2030s is gonna be crazy.
Thank You!
Wow. When’s the next time 301 will be at Penn Station I wonder?
Is that Penn Station? i thought only the ALC-42E when availible is permitted into through Penn Station, no Diesels allowed?
That locomotive doesn’t exist yet. It’s a railfan myth that diesels are banned from Penn station.
Generally speaking, trains with emissions are prohibited by law. They are also just plain dangerous in poorly ventilated spaces.
There are, however, any number of exceptions. This having been a test train using ultra-low-emissions locomotives, they were able to get away with it. If, however, an entire fleet of Chargers were idling in NYP on a regular basis, that could be a problem.
This will be ALC-44E and SC42DM
Is Amtrak getting new passenger cars? To go along with the new Siemens locomotives
Yup. Siemens Venture cars. Already in service in the Midwest.
And Airo (ventures) for the nec + cascades
As for LD routes; TBD
Is the MTA considering purchasing some of these?
yes, they will have to, to replace their P32 dual modes. Metro-North and LIRR are planning to purchase the 3rd rail dual mode version of the Charger.
The MTA placed an order for Metro-North. The contract included options for ConnDoT, which has been exercised, and options for the LIRR, which have not, as far as I can tell, been exercised, yet.
@@FanRailerWhy doesn’t state and /or feds step in to fund more electrification projects? The more of the MTA regional rail network gets electrified less the of a need to buy as many dual modes.
