I have been using LED strips around the perimeter of my tank under the plastic lip for about 2 years now. They're not super bright so probably not great for heavily planted tanks, but having a bunch of color options and patterns makes the tank look really great! It's also great not having anything on top of the tank. And for only $20 for the strip, it was a good value compared to some of the more expensive "official" aquarium lights. Thanks for your tips!
I really appreciate the options under $100 for new fish keepers. Working in a LFS, it’s difficult to justify expensive lights to someone just getting started. They are usually more focused on the fish they want to keep, so the first goal is to help them enjoy and be successful with what they can afford.
If you want the most bang for your buck and you can do simple wiring just convert T12 or T8 fixtures over to LED. It's very simple and fast once you do one. Then buy the LED tube lights that fit the sockets in whatever spectrum, type and watts you want.
One budget lighting solution that works awesome are high CRI SMD5630 LED strips. U-Home/Marswell are the ones I've used (5500-6000K 95CRI). You get a 16 foot reel for about $35 (each foot of light is about 7W). I'd recommend the 24V strips, since it reduces the power supply current needed to run them. All you need is a 24V 5A power supply, some aluminum bar or sheet around 1/16" thick to mount it on, and you can create a light fixture that will fit any tank dimensions you need. Colors of the fish and decor look outstanding under them too.
I have 2 beams work lights, a 12" and a 24". Both seem to be growing the plants well. The full spectrum works better that the all white led one tank came with. And I love the price. Have a blessed day.

I have a Beamswork that I have been using for one year. I started a heavy planted tank that I started one year ago. They have worked fine for me with medium light plants. I would recommend Beamswork. I have also purchased the timer that I really like. (I have a 30 gal long)
I have a 20g regular tank. Planted. I don't know wich is better between hygger full spectrum 18 to 24 inch (14 watts). Or hygger full espectrym 24 to 30 inch (16 watts). The length of tank is just stucked in the middle of these 2 sizes (24 inch). What to choose?

Hi there am just wondering if I can use my previous led maxspect lights on a tropical setup will be ok to use. witch I can put on a timer and change the spectrum of the light too
I have had no problems with the beamswork lights. Currently I have the 10,000 K full spectrum beamswork light and grow hi tech plants with no problem whatsoever. But I have to say that the light is on a relatively shallow aquarium, maybe somewhere around 12 inches or so high and I am using DIY CO2, and for over four months I have had no problems in growing any hi tech plant. The plants grow fast and lush. I have had this beamswork light on this aquarium for at least two years and it’s still growing plants very well. For a deeper aquarium I would put two beamswork lights on aquarium, or spend more money and get a more powerful light.
I am setting up a 29 gal standard fully planted tank and was going to use the Fluval 3.0 plant light. It is 32 watts and according to online specs, this is just over 1 watt per gal which is considered low light for plants. You stated that it is a medium light. Can I put my older Fluval Aquasky 2.0 light next to it to increase the density?
Got a 35 gal hex tank want to grow some plants in it. But it's 24 inches deep around 18 inches wide. What light would be bright enough for low to medium light plants?
Does the material that tank is made affect how deep the light penetrates, I got a clear for life 40 gallon with built in filter and the top of it it's acrylic, does not come of so I would have to put the light on top of the acrylic lid, should I get a stronger light than what I need I want to have different kind of plants and a carpet,
Hey man I appreciate the content! Although it's 3 years old it's still very relevant. Just got my first tank today and picking lights out now. What kind of lid are you using on your tanks? That's next on my list lol
i mainly focus on fish not an aquascaper . but i want to give my fish a suitable environment and also get their vibrant colours out by giving a good setup . so i do simple setups like biotopes with some plants . for lighting what should i choose . warm white , cool white or white RGB lights . what is the most effective for both fish and plants . can you explain it sir
Jason, I’ve got a 220 gallon that’s 72” L x 24” Deep x 30” Tall. What light would I necessarily need? I’ve struggled with it for 2 years and can’t keep my plants alive, I believe it’s something to do with my spread, I’ve tried only low light, no co2
Which is the best L.E.D light for a 60 L hexagon tank. The lid is a single piece of plastic (doesn't have a feeding hatch), so I have to remove the whole lid for feeding, & maintenance.
Depends on what you are looking for and how much you want to spend. If you have plants with that kind of depth you may need the Kessil Lights (very expensive though). Fluval 3.0 may be ok for most beginner plants though. If there are no plants and you don't want to spend a lot of money the Hygger lights are pretty good.
Thank you for this information. You've been most helpful. What do you think about the Fluval 2.0? Im not looking to do any coral or plants. Just saltwater fish. Would you say the 2.0 are on the same level as the finnex sting rays or better?
I think they are better than the finnex. I'm not sure they sell them anymore though with the 3.0s out for the last few years (unless you find someone who has some old inventory)?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thanks for the reply, so the Fluval Aquasky lights are available. I didn't mean the 2.0. The Aquasky lights come in around $115 and they have the Bluetooth capability. Thank you for your knowledge. SUBSCRIBED!!!
So the led light that came with my 55g kit broke, the company replaced it but also said the replacement doesnt come with a guarantee. Well just a few months, one section is out already! Im considering the finnex but i want a glass top, will it work ok thru the glass?
Awesome video! I was wondering about what light to get for my new 36 gallon high tank. It's so high that my clip on light just doesn't penetrate very deep into the water column to reach my plants, so I don't really know what to do. Recommendations?
I tell you what, I do love the look of t5 lights. I’m having a difficult time parting with the one I have but it’s just not bright enough and the fixtures are becoming more difficult to find and there’s few options. Edit: in fact what you’ll find is the higher end brands have put tremendous effort into matching the spectrums of t5 lighting especially in marine lighting.
Great discussion! I like the Fluval plant 3.0. Do you know if the moonlight mode causes algae to grow? If it doesn't seems like a great feature to have.
I recently purchased a new aquarium that came with a LED white light bar on the lid. Everytime it is On, my Butterfly Balloon Molly starts to freeze up, shakes like it is having a seizure and swims vertically. When I turn the light Off it resumes to normal behavior. Is it because of the Light or is it a condition of the Molly? Thank you
Great video as always. How is the light that came with the fluval spec v? I am going to plant the aquarium and I am wondering how strong the light us and what kind of plants I can put in there.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I decided to go for the Beamswork brand. Even though the Hygger brand is at a reasonable price, the energy wattage is much higher than Beamswork; I would rather spend a few more bucks up front to save some energy on my hobby. Anyway, I appreciate your input! As always, fantastic videos, please do keep up the good work!
hello friends how r u? about a month ago i got myself the new hygger light right now my tank is all filled with green aelge the tank is 100 cm long and 45 cm high could it be becuase of the new light? maybe it is too bright for this size? i personally don't think so... can i have your thoughts please thank u
If i put my black water semi planted tank on balcony and knowing its receiving a bit of light from outside, is it fine to turn the light on at night and turn it off until morning? Knowing it’s bright in the morning, I couldn’t mimic the day and night when I turn the light during night. Doe s that mean I should turn the lights on in the morning?
i have the finnex 24/7 planted light on a 20high is that just one you hadn't had as part of your lights list or different class of of light than said mentioned ? thanks for all your help on this one cause im shopping for a new light for a 55gl with java fern and hornwort the few plants left alone with my mbunas... but thought an led shop light would suffice for the 55
What i noticed is, my light doesnt hit the fishes body at the right angles to really show their colors. If i shine a light on the side of my fish, their colors POP (talking about my purple mosaic guppies and green rasboras) but the light above them, doesnt show their color. This being said, i am using the aqueon LED hood light that came with the 55g. Is it because its a cheap LED or is there a way to angle a light to shine in kinda sideways?
In day mode, is the Beamswork more blue or yellow? I understand the night mode is definitely blue, but as I have looked for new lighting I have found that a slight warm cast (yellow) shoe off my fish better. Thank you for taking the time to answer my question when you can. I appreciate all of your videos.
Hi Jason , what is that blue fish with yellow tail name at beginning of the video ?? Tks. I have a planted tank and what i use is Finnex FugeRay , real good Led light and not so expensive , Tks
So i have a 6 foot long tank and all lights are high price that i can't afford. I bought a LED light from walmart. It's rated at 5000k. My plants are all look great and i have plants growing my fish look great.
Excellent video. So very informative! I have a finnex ll. It produces quite a bit of light. But I just have anubias and java fern in my goldfish tank 🤣
I enjoy this video. Just like any other video you produced. It looks like you compare different brands. Some lights only have white + blue LEDs. Are those any good? Someone even uses 6500K flood lights as the budget lights. Should we stick with full spectrum LED even for non planted tanks?
I am thinking of buying a 6.5k 30watt LED flood lights and adding a adapter to it and hanging it over aquarium. Would that work!? Tank is 2*2*1.⁵ cube. For carpet plants.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics actually as advised by another friend, this could be lil too bright. But that's not the issue it would lack blue n red spectrum so for best result I might have to add them. So that gets me back to square one of looking for LED lights having RGBW variations..!! I was looking forward to use the time for DIY stuff like these but it's quite confusing.!
Another great video mate perfect timing im still debating on lights for the racks im thinking about just doing 8ft led shop lights with 6500k becuase while cheaper beamswork is still going to cost me a lot but the 280g im still undecided
Ya, in your case I might go shop LEDs. Just make sure they are the color temp you want (maybe get a shorter strand of a few different spectrums and see what you like).
@@PrimeTimeAquatics yeah i was thinking about that get few small then when i find the one i want just get 8ft ones but talking to a few others it needs to be 6500k But the 280g is really throwing me for a loop on what to do
I have a fluval Aquasky led in my 20 gal, but theres just something i dont like about it, i don't find the colors to look good, i want a more natural white light with some blue that can grow some plants too
Which beamswork model are you using? They make so many that I'm not sure which one to choose. I need a 72" light, or two 36". Two aquaneats looked pretty good on there but those lights got repurposed to other tanks, and the Walmart 5000 lumen shop light works great for the money but its just too yellow for me at 5000k.
I have both the EA and DA versions and like them both - full spectrum. I actually like having two 36" lights because I can move one over a little and create a darker area in the tank. : -)
I am building a fish tank coffee table, can you recommend any lights that are submersible as I have a glass tabletop and would want an ugly bar light stuck to the underneath of it as it will be seen and inhibit view from the top of the tank
Which lights have the easiest to use timer/tech? I bought a cheaper Wifi connected light with an app for timer and spectrum, but one just recently crapped out on me and I’m looking to upgrade. I don’t keep anything that needs crazy lighting (mostly java fern, dwarf sag, low light stuff) and cichlids, but I work crazy hours so a consistent and east to use timer is really important to me.
The Fluval lights have nice apps for light control - 3.0s and aquasky. That being said, I find it easier to get something like a Beamswork or Hygger and plug it into a $10 timer.
is the ability to 'ramp up' the lights for the day and 'dim down' the lights important? (simulating day/night cycle) i've seen some timer products that can do that but i'm not seeing many talking about this as to if its important?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Right, my question was more around "is it important" as it doesnt seem to be something common (or at least not mentioned much)? Like do fish not seem to care if the lights just "come one" vs being ramped up slowly

If you can change the spectrum they’ll probably work just fine.
You can, but I still think the Fluval 3.0 is probably going to be sufficient. You can always remove the aquasky if you get too much algae.
Got a 35 gal hex tank want to grow some plants in it. But it's 24 inches deep around 18 inches wide. What light would be bright enough for low to medium light plants?
Beamswork and Fluval 3.0 would both work.
I have a couple of the stringray 2s I wish they came in black. 😁
Recommendation for a 125 Gallon tank? It's going to be moderately planted. Was looking into Dual Aquasky units.
I have dual 3ft Fluval 3.0s and like them.
Does the material that tank is made affect how deep the light penetrates, I got a clear for life 40 gallon with built in filter and the top of it it's acrylic, does not come of so I would have to put the light on top of the acrylic lid, should I get a stronger light than what I need I want to have different kind of plants and a carpet,
It doesn’t have a major impact.
I like the Finnex FugeRay Planted+. Its simple button control just wish it was dimmable.
Hey man I appreciate the content! Although it's 3 years old it's still very relevant. Just got my first tank today and picking lights out now. What kind of lid are you using on your tanks? That's next on my list lol
Depends on the tank. I either use glass or these: ruclips.net/video/xyQcuxJ7QV4/видео.html
i mainly focus on fish not an aquascaper . but i want to give my fish a suitable environment and also get their vibrant colours out by giving a good setup . so i do simple setups like biotopes with some plants . for lighting what should i choose . warm white , cool white or white RGB lights . what is the most effective for both fish and plants . can you explain it sir
Depends on your price point. The lights featured here will show fish off well and allow plants to grow.
What is your experience with light with led 4g bulbs?
Hey what led do you recommend for a 4ft 90 gallon it’s tall so I need something that shines deep
Fluval 3.0!
Any suggestions for what light would work best for a well planted ten gallon?
I have a beamswork on a planted tank and the plants are doing well. I also have stingrays on some tens and those plants are doing well too.
Great! That's about what I was thinking, Thank you for the great vids! @Prime Time Aquatics
Nice tank! You’d probably have to go with the 3.0s or something like Kessil.
Very helpful video. I think I'm gonna go with the Stingray 2 since the silver/transparent scheme is more aesthetically suitable on my frameless tank.
It's a good light!
Which is the best L.E.D light for a 60 L hexagon tank. The lid is a single piece of plastic (doesn't have a feeding hatch), so I have to remove the whole lid for feeding, & maintenance.
The hygger lights are pretty good .
got a q i got a 22 long aqamax i got light brown sand in my tank and my sand looks like white sand could it be my light
What i want to test is use more blue light on blue fish. To see if they pop out differently/better.
They certainly can!
Hi what light would you recommend for a 300 gallon aquarium?
Depends on what you are looking for and how much you want to spend. If you have plants with that kind of depth you may need the Kessil Lights (very expensive though). Fluval 3.0 may be ok for most beginner plants though. If there are no plants and you don't want to spend a lot of money the Hygger lights are pretty good.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics
Yes, thank you. I just wanted one which was bright enough to display my prized koi fishes
Professor thank you thinking of upgrading light on my super red bushy nose tank this was very helpful!
John Wood good to hear! Thanks for watching!
Sure!
Awesome video! I was wondering about what light to get for my new 36 gallon high tank. It's so high that my clip on light just doesn't penetrate very deep into the water column to reach my plants, so I don't really know what to do. Recommendations?
Depends on the types of plants, but either the Fluval 3.0 for plants that need higher light or you could look at Hygger or Finnex Stingray 2.
I have a 1" glass tank thats 3ft wide and 3ft deep and really want a planted tank any idea on what lights I should be using?
The Kessil lights or Fluval 3.0 Wild be your best bet.
I have a 90 corner tank. I have some plants. I am curious what would give me the best light coverage. The back is squared and from bowed.
Perhaps two AI Prime lights?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you I will try that.
I've got 1 common goldfish with plastic plants in a 10 gallon tank. Any suggestions on lighting?
You don't need a lot of light or an expensive light - Maybe Hygger? We have done a review on them and like them.
Will the beamswork led light work for a 23in deep it is 30in long
For most beginner plants it will probably do well.
I just ordered a multi coloured fish tank light that comes with a remote. Red, blue, white, pink, etc
Glad I found your channel.....and subscribed. Great stuff.
Glad you are here.
new subscriber, do you still recommend the Fluval 3.0?
Glad you are here! Yes - no issues with them!
thanks, also not sure why I was not subscribed to your channel, I do enjoy all your videos. Keep up the good work.
What is recommended for a planted 55 gallon. Most reviews I can find is for a lower tank. I need the light that will get to the bottom.
Fluval 3.0 should do well.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics the light I have is a hygger 72w led. Will it be strong enough?
@@Funsun39 did you have luck with that hygger?
@@monokendo I went with a chihiros.
It can contribute a little, but probably not very much.
Thank you
I’ve never seen that before! I guess it could be the light - any chance there is an electrical leak coming from the light into the water?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics it does not seem like there is a electrical leak. Because the other fish are doing fine in the tank with the lights on or off.
Great video as always. How is the light that came with the fluval spec v? I am going to plant the aquarium and I am wondering how strong the light us and what kind of plants I can put in there.
It's doing a good job of growing low tech plants (crypts, anubias, etc).
Awesome video! What is your recommendation for a 36 Bowfront Aquarium? Because of the lid, it is hard to pick out a good light. Thank you in advance!
Check out the hygger lights - reasonably priced and decent quality
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Awesome! Will do. Thank you!
Can I use uv light for planted aquarium?is it harmful for fishes and also kill the beneficial bacteria?is kid needed for planted aquarium?
Sure - it won't harm your microbes or plants. The beneficial bacteria are attached to surfaces and generally aren't found in the water column.
do you have one for clip on lights for planted tanks?
The Aqueon planted nano light is good as is the Lifegard Aquatics lights.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics What is the purpose of the blue light mode in the light? Just looks?
hello friends
how r u?
about a month ago i got myself the new hygger light
right now my tank is all filled with green aelge
the tank is 100 cm long and 45 cm high
could it be becuase of the new light?
maybe it is too bright for this size?
i personally don't think so...
can i have your thoughts please
thank u
Algae growth is usually a combination of too much light or lights left on too long combined with nitrate levels that are elevated.
Keep it up guys!!! Great content!!!!
Infantry Veteran thank you!
I dig being a sub of yours, no BS !!
Glad you are here!
What's the best affordable light for a mbuna 4 ft tank?
Nicrew or hygger
If i put my black water semi planted tank on balcony and knowing its receiving a bit of light from outside, is it fine to turn the light on at night and turn it off until morning? Knowing it’s bright in the morning, I couldn’t mimic the day and night when I turn the light during night. Doe s that mean I should turn the lights on in the morning?
You'll have to see how much algae you get? The wild card is what will happen with the outside light.
i have the finnex 24/7 planted light on a 20high is that just one you hadn't had as part of your lights list or different class of of light than said mentioned ? thanks for all your help on this one cause im shopping for a new light for a 55gl with java fern and hornwort the few plants left alone with my mbunas... but thought an led shop light would suffice for the 55
I have one on a 20 gallon and like it too.
It would be nice if you showed us what they look like off to tank at the same time
What i noticed is, my light doesnt hit the fishes body at the right angles to really show their colors.
Ya, that’s the case for a lot of fish. Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do about the angle.
@PrimeTimeAquatics seems like someone should invent lights on a lil swivel so you can aet it more in the front but angle it back towards the tank..
In day mode, is the Beamswork more blue or yellow? I understand the night mode is definitely blue, but as I have looked for new lighting I have found that a slight warm cast (yellow) shoe off my fish better. Thank you for taking the time to answer my question when you can. I appreciate all of your videos.
DrawerFullofRocks I think it’s a little more blue.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Ah. Thank you so much for letting me know. I appreciate you very much.
Can you use indirect sunlight in front of a window with semi open blinds for a planted aquarium ?
You can, but it almost always leads to algae issues.
Hi Jason , what is that blue fish with yellow tail name at beginning of the video ?? Tks.
I have a planted tank and what i use is Finnex FugeRay , real good Led light and not so expensive , Tks
That is a Lake Tanganyika cichlid - Cyprichromis leptosoma
@@PrimeTimeAquatics .. Thank you for the information , very colorful nice little fish.
So i have a 6 foot long tank and all lights are high price that i can't afford. I bought a LED light from walmart. It's rated at 5000k. My plants are all look great and i have plants growing my fish look great.
@@zafishguy5166 I have a lot don't know the names lol
what do you think of ring lights?
I haven’t used them so I’m not sure?
Excellent video. So very informative! I have a finnex ll. It produces quite a bit of light. But I just have anubias and java fern in my goldfish tank 🤣
You’re a beast getting a like!
what to u have for your mbuna tank?
One Finnex Stringray light - 48"
I enjoy this video. Just like any other video you produced. It looks like you compare different brands. Some lights only have white + blue LEDs. Are those any good? Someone even uses 6500K flood lights as the budget lights. Should we stick with full spectrum LED even for non planted tanks?
I would go with full spectrum for plants. Plus, they just look better in general.
I am thinking of buying a 6.5k 30watt LED flood lights and adding a adapter to it and hanging it over aquarium. Would that work!? Tank is 2*2*1.⁵ cube. For carpet plants.
I wonder what the par will be on that light? Might be really high?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics yeah i was thinking about that get few small then when i find the one i want just get 8ft ones but talking to a few others it needs to be 6500k
But the 280g is really throwing me for a loop on what to do
I have a fluval Aquasky led in my 20 gal, but theres just something i dont like about it, i don't find the colors to look good, i want a more natural white light with some blue that can grow some plants too
How long should a light be kept on during the day and night.. very open question
All my lights are set for 2.5hrs in the morning and 6.5hrs in the evening.
Two 36 inch will give you a shadow in the middle
I have both the EA and DA versions and like them both - full spectrum. I actually like having two 36" lights because I can move one over a little and create a darker area in the tank. : -)
What’s a good light for med - high light in a 55 other than the 210$ fluval? Been trying to find something cheaper but haven’t had any luck.
The Beamswork lights tend to be very bright.
I am building a fish tank coffee table, can you recommend any lights that are submersible as I have a glass tabletop and would want an ugly bar light stuck to the underneath of it as it will be seen and inhibit view from the top of the tank
Good question. Unfortunately, I haven't used submersible lighting so I'm not sure which are best?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics all good cheers mate
Prime Time Aquatics thanks for your help and your response! I’ll look into those options.
So, Lights we like. :P
is the ability to 'ramp up' the lights for the day and 'dim down' the lights important? (simulating day/night cycle) i've seen some timer products that can do that but i'm not seeing many talking about this as to if its important?
You would need the extra controller for that.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Right, my question was more around "is it important" as it doesnt seem to be something common (or at least not mentioned much)? Like do fish not seem to care if the lights just "come one" vs being ramped up slowly
Great your aquariums and cichliden fich. Very nice and like.
Br Antov thank you!
Thx for this video. It is a great resource
