Jason Johnson - President, Law Enforcement Legal Defense Fund
Rafael Mangual - Deputy Director of Legal Policy, Manhattan Institute

Take a look at the ways Just SAYING politeand orderly, respectful debating is nice but is not enough.Take a look at how other countries fund their elections. Do those who were asked to respond hear the answers of the other so-called debaters. We do need vigorous debate on this subject. We spend an inordinate amount of money on police forces and the results are often poor. The problems is that the police are asked to do just about everything. A man trained and armed and ready to respond to a dangerous ituation like a bank robbery in progress should not be asked to respond to a man or women acting strangely or a achild playing with a toy gun in a park. We need a separate organization to respond to traffic problems. Such people do not need guns, uniforms or training in the use of force. Police often act in an authoritarian manner or too hastily. Our drug laws are out of date. Many societies treat drug problems as a medical problem and not a problem of crime. We need a highly trained and intelligent group of men to investigate serious crimes such as the wholesale production and importation of drugs or of murders or fraud. I fear that many are attracted to a job in law enforcement by the gun, the uniform and the authority which they believe it gives them. A policeman is not a soldier but a citizen in uniform who should know that he must obey the law of the law as any citizen. Why must police chiefs oftren look like generals or be called captain. The slogan "Defund the police" is misleading and unfortunate.

Bravo. I'm yelling at my TV.
Fox news really needs to stop fear bating and America needs to pull it's head out of it's butt. We love our police force, but you are absolutely correct and I bet some officers would agree with more training or better explanation of what it is that they are required to do. Our officers should not be labeled as Jack of All Trades (counsellor, mental health technician, traffic controller, eviction specialist, affidavit services, domestic negotiator, and so much more.
Even if they are officers, there should be divisions within the police department.

Why do people still serve in justice departments despite the constant ridicule, harassment, and its dangers? It's because of the money. The careers have great financial benefits, security, and unionization. After 20-25 years service, retired members still are paid out 50-100 grand yearly pensions, and this includes retirement investments which are usually about 1-2 million after 20 or so years of service. This security cannot be found in most other careers. But the moment the nation defunds, it will just invite gang violence and chaos to reign in cities.

To defund means to reduce an already over stretched workforce who lack the replacements needed for those who say retire or are unfortunately lost in the line of duty, whilst yes redirecting mismanaged funds should be looked at ie increases in training and social awareness ie how to handle a crowd and be more talkative whilst unnecessarily needed makes communication between the two seem more apparent for those on the side line ie those with cameras, also by defining the police you not only remove active officers but also inactive officers ie cyber security, crime scene investigators and even those in the courts who deal with evidence ie a woman was brutally raped, her arms were broken and so on, they catch the criminal responsible and was freed due to a lack of evidence also personally I think that officers should be equipped with head cameras since whilst body cameras do work they can be blacked by say the arms or obstacles at chest height and don’t reflect on what the officers are observing (this is my personal opinion). Also personally more interactions with local areas should be enforced and by that I mean events, concerts and other forms of entertainment allowing the community to feel more secure and have a deeper understanding of what officers go through plus it could be used as a charity event ie helping out the homeless or supporting a cancer patient or last wishes and so on. Lastly a secondary police force who’s job it is to ensure the ((purity)) of the police force in order to prevent discrimination or internal corruption where members are forbidden from interacting with local police officers and must be from a separate state, this is to ensure that the overseers aren’t connected to the police of a particular state or area and whilst this may be overkill as stated it’s in order to prevent say a chief of police or even court members from say taking bribes and what not, they will have to adhere to strict rules and regulations where punishment is tough and severe and with a clear set of guidelines in order to prevent ambiguity and miss understandings like i said before this is just my personal opinion

So a school shooter walks into school with a gun how should that be handled and for pure semantics say that it was a former student who was bullied and harassed by their teachers and simply broke, then again how would you sort out the problem,
If a person who was violating a woman who should be called to deal with that problem? Since I’m sure the criminals only wanted a conversation as for the parking violations and the like they have to have the power to stop someone and if needed arrest them, if say a car was stopped and it wasn’t a police officer how much respect (lack off) or authority will that person have and if there’s say drugs in the back of the car? Then what? Or say a person was drunk driving and nearly kills a child and a social worker rocks up, then what? They have no say nor authority to do anything until the actual police arrive and by then the suspect has already run off and killed a pedestrian? Now you have a chase which is extremely dangerous? Whilst I understand the view point of oh no I’m in trouble or it’s the ruddy police again then why do you need to waste a police officer in a useless position, again if say it’s illegal to double park and some idiot does it then a social worker without the ability to arrest lacks the power of the law and therefore criminals can simply ignore them.

What most people won't tell you here is that for the vast majority of human history, policing was private, is was not a state, public, labor union role. And it was done well. The private cops knew the neighborhoods. They knew the customer. It was only with the modern state and modern policing that the problem arose. The monopoly by the state, supported by labor unions, is a problem. They are not talking here about ending the state policing system. They are just debating what form the monopoly should take.

Defunding the police is NOT the way to end bad policing, if you look at police forces across the planet the ones that have issues with police either being corrupt or breaking the law themselves are underfunded and in particular under trained.
