This was the hardest fight. I had to start my game over from the beginning because you cannot leave the castle once you have saved inside. I was too low-leveled. There is no chance to grind if you save over your old file!
I was in the same exact boat and it took me a month or so to finally beat this fight without starting over. Got very lucky and it ended on a dragoon leap. Broke a controller over this encounter lol

This bring me memories, first time I fought Velius I was celebrating the millenian New year evenight 1999- 2000 I was drinking and playing, I could not beat velius until several attempts all new year 2000 night was trying to win this guy so I was successful in 5 or 6 attempt... I Drank a whole wine bottle that night!!
This is a real gameplay . You can follow instructions from others and make them your strategies, but a real gammer is able to create his own strategies. Awesome game, childhood flashback.
Too true. I can barely remember how I passed it, but involved being a ninja and having a handy chemist... I feel so sophomoric now not having the auto-potion. At the same time I went for the throat and killed the main boss within 5-6 turns; I knew I did not want to f around with those warlocks. lol.
Got that right. The one time when Velius was easy for me was when I was doing an atheist playthrough. You'd be amazed at how easy this fight was when your characters have their faith in single digits. It was like Velius and his demons had no real answers.

This is one of those battles that due to the sheer atmosphere, music, and difficulty combined with the MANY people who've stated over the years to screwing their save files; makes it a most memorable moment in gaming history. The sounds of the transformation into Velius and Dark Holy have never left my mind since I was a child.
I loved this battle in Final Fantasy Tactics. It's the first of the Lucavi battles where you feel there challenged and the victory is more than sweet.....until you meet a possessed Marquis Elmdor and his assassins in the next fight.
Cheap but really effective trick to this boss: 1) Make Ramza into a Chemist. Equip him with the best gun you can and give him auto potion. Give him squire abilities. Load up with the best potions you can find. 2) During the 1v1 phase of the fight, keep casting speed up on yourself. Your auto potion should make it so you are never in any danger of dying (manually heal if you are). 3) At max speed, heal up, kill him, then decimate Velius by going 2-3 times for every one time he goes.
I don't think the problem is the battle difficulty. Mid-bosses *should* be harder than the final boss in my view (mainly on your party having less access to game-breaking abilities). But that "Do you wish to save?" before this battle! Especially with Gafgarion being tougher than Queklain a chapter earlier. Tactics Ogre didn't set you up like that without giving you fair warning.
Wiegraf and Velius are the gear-check boss of this game. Every game has one. He was also a lot of people's first lesson in "use multiple save slots, you dunce!".
my favorite boss =D Velius is such a kickass name. this fight was pretty good too. but i had much more trouble against Adramelk (Adrammelech) or Ramza's brother Dycedarg.
This fight was crazy. I had to start the game over because I got stuck on this fight and didn't save at the right spot or something...I forget but basically I had to start from the beginning of the game and I made sure to fight more random fights before this one so that I was so strong I rekt him easily :D The reason I randomly looked this up is because I have been listening to static-x lately and I used to listen to them back 20+ years ago when I played this game and there was a song that came on while I was fighting velius. I think it's called Bled For Days and he says "meaningless" over and over and back then I almost thought he was saying velius! Then he says things like "bled for days", "take the hold", "make my weapons", etc. so it was pretty much Velius' song. I had that song on repeat when I finally made it back to him and beat him LMAO I know i'm weird but I never told anyone this goofy story :D
Hahaha this happened to me the first time I played the game (somany years ago), but believe me, this is still the most rewarding "finished game feeling" I have to date
Wow the game changes between the original ps1 version and PSP/iOS version is weird, this boss is called Belias the Gigas in PSP version and when he appears he said "I am come" instead of "Sorry to keep you waiting."
This is the battle I would level up 20-30 times or something. I always stay 1 space away from his lightning sword range, and yell until I had 50 speed, then I would accumulate to 99 lol... And you keep those same bonus stats when you fight Velius -- making him CAKE WALK lol.
Okay, I gotta say it even after all this time, but this fight took you 8 or so minutes with a team you find fun? Good lordy man, I remember fighting Velius with a crack team able to tackle other bosses ans fights easily, yet I got repeatedly stomped by him and the shortest fight was about, twenty minutes at least. I salute you man.
I still remember exactly how I beat this guy, thats how hard he was, my wizard casts flare on him and was hit by another demon while casting so she was almost dead, after she casted it it did around 250 damage, while all my other party members were dead xd, my dragon lancer was still up in the air so he was the only alive, after 2 turns he comes down and hits velius and kills him, I actually jumped up and down when I realized I just won.

I remember i kept making things hard on myself,not really on purpose,but because i wanted to level my characters up without wasting a battles experience points. I ended up using unmastered job classes like usual for the battle. I remember i had Ramza as a calculator which barely survived the battle with Wiegraf then the rest of the party was half time mage/half oracle. Took forever to win....lol
OMG, this is THE hardest battle i've ever played in my life (i mean, in strategy RPGs)!!!!!!!!! I thought that it was impossible to win even using A WHOLE PARTY WITH AUTO-POTION ABILITY, but eventually i made it using the Lich summon once.
Fun combo I just tried against this guy: two of my units had status protection gear, Counter Magic, and Magic DefendUP abilities. He never cast Cyclops on them, but it was nice to know that combo was there. Nice kill, by the way. I just beat him tonight (not for the first time, but it was a particularly epic kill), and hopped on RUclips to see what videos might be out there. On this time through, I've been messing with zodiac a lot. Pisces Ramza makes Wiegraf a joke...
I think they should make a prequal so you can play as Balbanes where Ivalice fought against it's neighboring nations Ordalia and Romanda to experience the 50 year war first hand! Anyway, yeah I spent three days trying to win this battle, it's by far the most difficult battle in the game and at such an unsuspecting time if your a first timer and your characters are not prepared.
Velius was the hardest boss fight of the entire game. The first time around, I tried again and again with as many setups as I could think of and could not beat him without cheesing. The second time when I knew how the game worked, it wasn't as hard..... but man this fight comes out of nowhere and completely kicks your ass if you don't go in knowing how to beat it. Good job with your setup, the time mage was more useful than I expected.

I love how this video shows all those spell quotes. Some interesting tactical choices (and mistakes) in this fight. Getting the demons to focus on Ramza and having the Time Mage attack instead of heal seem to have been key. Having the Summoner wasted before getting his spell off was an embarrassment. I'm sure I've been there, too.
Losing the Summoner was half surprise, half blessing in disguise. Velius rarely uses his physical attack...in fact, when I made this video, that was the first time I'd *ever seen it.* He usually prefers to use Cyclops or Seal on his enemies, regardless of what's going on around him. If I'd bothered to check the ATB like a sane person, I probably *wouldn't* have used Bahamut there, either. But in a freak coincidence, Velius seemed to value not taking nearly 300 damage more than possibly wiping out 2 members of my team, and thus he chose to one-shot my Summoner. The irony is that had he used Cyclops, he might have actually won, but that's the way the cookie crumbles I guess. ...my god this Video is almost 10 years old.
As ROMHackers have proven, the AI in Final Fantasy Tactics is shockingly good...but the base game gives it very little to work with. It purposely hamstrings the options of enemy NPCs and gives them sub-par jobs to work with, while you are ever-growing. When you give the AI something to work with, it becomes downright *terrifying.*
This is the part of final fantasy tactics where it gets Heavy AF and you realize the story and the battles are important and you’re going to have to use every ounce of effort to defeat your enemies
@Lance241151 Well put, man. It took me a LOT longer to beat this battle on the PSX, and I wore that reset button down! I would have wasted more time trying to revive my characters than taking out Velius.
@MeercatMonstro The only "ultimate" caster in FFT is the Calculator, and that requires a LOT of work to get anywhere near good. In terms of raw power, Summoners actually fall behind Wizards in MA. The difference is that summoners get huge AoE and spells that discern ally from enemy. They're a tad OP with the right setup.
One of the battles I had with this fucker, the way it ended was so weird and cool at the same time, Agrias was the only one left (Ramza was turned to stone, thank god...) and she was confused, everyone else was either dead or stoned, and for some odd reason, Velius/Belias wouldn't attack her, he'd keep following her, while she was confused, eventually she kept attacking Velius and I won eventually, the confusion wouln't ware off... it was so weird and cool... :P
Tks alot SRXTeam8888 about the math skill + demi2 if it wasnt for it i wouldnt have been able to pwn velius.....still my calculator got hit by the demi2 but as he has MP switch on his mp was damage and not is hp.....still it was a very close fight almost everone was dead......
I was at lvl 21 when I 1st did this battle.....20 yrs ago. Mind you, it took me 10+ tries to do it. Much luck was on my side. Wish I recalled my loadout config.

Thanks. I don't really know how I do it, but no matter what fight I come at Velius with, I manage to find victory. This comes from being dominated by him more times than I care to count.
"This fight makes a LOT of people quit FFT for good." I quit here the first time. Ramza was a Knight with only enough HP to take 2 Lightning Stabs before he died (Didn't know about the Chameleon Robe trick at the time), and I only had 1 save slot right before here. I restarted like a year later, and I'm glad I did because I realized just how great this game was, which I somehow didn't notice back then. In a sense, Wiegraf kicking my ass is what made me see what a masterpiece this game was. :D
This is an epic and very hard battle. However, it can also turn easy if you use: Arithmeticks (Math Skill) + Gravity (Demi) / Graviga (Demi 2)/ Invigoration (Life Drain) = Ownage. Summoners with Lich works too. Two Lich's will skin this sheep to doom. Dragoon w/ Doublehand + Partisan + Jump, another effective strategy.
@MeercatMonstro By saying that, you're neglecting how ridiculously useful the Time Mage is. Also, later summons take too long to cast unless you have Short Charge....which you need the Time Mage to get :P
Actually I can explain that one. The AI reacts weirdly to confusion, especially if there's only one person on the field with it. They won't attack that person unless they can deal over half their HP in damage...but only with a physical attack. For some reason, they just won't use magic against the confused. So yeah...stupid AI.
@DonAgalloch From what I remember, they changed the game to be on 1 CD instead of two, which forced them to cut some bits and pieces out and trim the dialogue. It was given a translation that could barely be understood by third graders (which makes understanding the entire story REALLY painfully hard if you don't have War of the Lions). Many abilities had their JP costs decreased, and JP gain was increased. That's just the short list. Hey, Peter Pan isn't bad!
this game is a masterpiece please dont break it. you just have to level up your characters good or use diferent classes its hard. but i beat him at like 8 or 9 years of age

back then I had to almost start the game over because of this fight, cause I couldn't get my characters strong enough to survive this, so I had to stall and keep the knights alive outside the gates and try to level as much as possible
This fight, and the fight against Gafgarion are the hardest on the game! You're placed in a disadvantage to start because they have attacks that have greater range than your movement. I think I fought Velius like 9 times before I beat him, and I did it with a knight with ninja skill.
I'm still to this day of the belief that Short Charge on a summoner is the wrong way to go, especially if you have Haste at your disposal. Half MP lets a summoner summon constantly throughout the battle without needing to worry about replenishing their pool. Short Charge is also FAR easier to acquire in Chapter 4 than in chapters 2 and 3....unless you're a grinding fanatic.
Well, I really don't care about how special everyone thinks they are for managing to defeat Velius with ease, I actually managed to BEAT Battletoads on NES (As well as Ninja Gaiden) and yet I still found this battle to be BRUTAL when I first encountered it on my PS1 back when this game came out. I've never played the follow up versions of this game but the original was a welcome surprise... beautiful music and great gameplay. It is rare to see a game capable of such enjoyment these days.

I have no clue what I had, years ago, other than a random soldier was a Ninja, but I downed Velius before he had a turn. I'm sure I had a Time Magic involved, or something. My older brother couldn't get past 'em. (Not that lucky every time.)
Yeah, I played FFT in PS1 and, man, the battle against Velius is the hardest one. I'm like you, stunned about people who want to teach us how to play FFT just because they beat WotL with x or y units setup. There are that bunch of jobs and almost infinite setups, but no, they just call us dumb and noob if we didn't use the "right setup" to win.
The level up animations when the monsters is hilarious. The music and little dance but theyre demons.

I think the battle was an oversight in the making of this game and not tested properly . This stage was harder than the last boss

@MeercatMonstro The only "ultimate" caster in FFT is the Calculator, and that requires a LOT of work to get anywhere near good.
In terms of raw power, Summoners actually fall behind Wizards in MA. The difference is that summoners get huge AoE and spells that discern ally from enemy. They're a tad OP with the right setup.

One of the battles I had with this fucker, the way it ended was so weird and cool at the same time, Agrias was the only one left (Ramza was turned to stone, thank god...) and she was confused, everyone else was either dead or stoned, and for some odd reason, Velius/Belias wouldn't attack her, he'd keep following her, while she was confused, eventually she kept attacking Velius and I won eventually, the confusion wouln't ware off... it was so weird and cool... :P
The Lucavi cursed moan was always one of the best sounds.
Wiegraf and Zalbag, two guys you wanted in your party for one reason or another.
Tks alot SRXTeam8888 about the math skill + demi2 if it wasnt for it i wouldnt have been able to pwn velius.....still my calculator got hit by the demi2 but as he has MP switch on his mp was damage and not is hp.....still it was a very close fight almost everone was dead......
I was at lvl 21 when I 1st did this battle.....20 yrs ago. Mind you, it took me 10+ tries to do it. Much luck was on my side. Wish I recalled my loadout config.

Thanks. I don't really know how I do it, but no matter what fight I come at Velius with, I manage to find victory. This comes from being dominated by him more times than I care to count.

Ramza was a Knight with only enough HP to take 2 Lightning Stabs before he died (Didn't know about the Chameleon Robe trick at the time), and I only had 1 save slot right before here. I restarted like a year later, and I'm glad I did because I realized just how great this game was, which I somehow didn't notice back then. In a sense, Wiegraf kicking my ass is what made me see what a masterpiece this game was. :D
This is an epic and very hard battle. However, it can also turn easy if you use:
Arithmeticks (Math Skill) + Gravity (Demi) / Graviga (Demi 2)/ Invigoration (Life Drain) = Ownage.
Summoners with Lich works too. Two Lich's will skin this sheep to doom.
Dragoon w/ Doublehand + Partisan + Jump, another effective strategy.
@MeercatMonstro By saying that, you're neglecting how ridiculously useful the Time Mage is.
Also, later summons take too long to cast unless you have Short Charge....which you need the Time Mage to get :P
Actually I can explain that one. The AI reacts weirdly to confusion, especially if there's only one person on the field with it. They won't attack that person unless they can deal over half their HP in damage...but only with a physical attack. For some reason, they just won't use magic against the confused. So yeah...stupid AI.
@DonAgalloch From what I remember, they changed the game to be on 1 CD instead of two, which forced them to cut some bits and pieces out and trim the dialogue. It was given a translation that could barely be understood by third graders (which makes understanding the entire story REALLY painfully hard if you don't have War of the Lions). Many abilities had their JP costs decreased, and JP gain was increased. That's just the short list.

I’ve done it with Ramza as lancer, Agrias, a Priest with holy, a black wizard with flare and a samurai with punch art as second ability…it was tough 😅

back then I had to almost start the game over because of this fight, cause I couldn't get my characters strong enough to survive this, so I had to stall and keep the knights alive outside the gates and try to level as much as possible

i found that lich was very effective against velius
Lich is surprisingly effective against most if not all Lucavi. Real time saver.

This fight, and the fight against Gafgarion are the hardest on the game! You're placed in a disadvantage to start because they have attacks that have greater range than your movement. I think I fought Velius like 9 times before I beat him, and I did it with a knight with ninja skill.
No short charge on your summoner??
I'm still to this day of the belief that Short Charge on a summoner is the wrong way to go, especially if you have Haste at your disposal. Half MP lets a summoner summon constantly throughout the battle without needing to worry about replenishing their pool.
Short Charge is also FAR easier to acquire in Chapter 4 than in chapters 2 and 3....unless you're a grinding fanatic.

Well, I really don't care about how special everyone thinks they are for managing to defeat Velius with ease, I actually managed to BEAT Battletoads on NES (As well as Ninja Gaiden) and yet I still found this battle to be BRUTAL when I first encountered it on my PS1 back when this game came out. I've never played the follow up versions of this game but the original was a welcome surprise... beautiful music and great gameplay. It is rare to see a game capable of such enjoyment these days.
This was the toughest battle ever and I barely made it through just once before getting pissed off with the game!! Figured it out with some time magic tactics...

hardest strategy-rpg battle ever, it took me like 30 tries because i didn't buy the chameleon robe and my ramza was a low level ninja :( , but Lich worked ! :D
I did this one at lvl 23 a LOOOONG time ago. Summon, Geo, BM, Ninja double attacks IIRC.
I have no clue what I had, years ago, other than a random soldier was a Ninja, but I downed Velius before he had a turn. I'm sure I had a Time Magic involved, or something. My older brother couldn't get past 'em. (Not that lucky every time.)

Yeah, I played FFT in PS1 and, man, the battle against Velius is the hardest one. I'm like you, stunned about people who want to teach us how to play FFT just because they beat WotL with x or y units setup. There are that bunch of jobs and almost infinite setups, but no, they just call us dumb and noob if we didn't use the "right setup" to win.
Then someone levels up and completely kills the mood.
