Cutting My Thermarest Xtherm Shorter!!!

- I always sleep with my pack under my knees when camping, so I don't need a full length sleeping pad. That doesn't change the fact that I sleep cold. The Theramarest xTherm has the highest weight to warmth ratio in the line but only comes in full length and extra long. So... today, I take a leap of faith and show you what happens when I try to cut down a Thermarest xtherm and save 8 ounces off my packweight.

Thank you so much!!!
I'm going to cut mine too.
I love Xtherm but I'm 5'1" so it is so long. I always hated the extra length when I'm blowing up in my little tent. They really need to make a shorter version.
Thanks again! 🥰
I'm 5'2" tell us your results! how short did you go?
I was gritting my teeth the entire time!! Lol. You are a brave woman, that pad is not cheap. But you're right, it's just too long at 6' 7.
I did this and it works really well. Excellent advice from a very brave lady. Thanks!
a few years later, is it still holding together?
Well done! I just ordered an XTherm intending to do this as well. I wanted a warm wide pad, but I'm only 5'2" so this one is just too long. I'm hope I'm as successful as you were. I've done this before with another less expensive pad, so I believe it will work, and your video gives me more confidence. Thanks!
How is it holding up three years later? Looking to do the same thing but still too scared...
Very clean bathtub. Nice.
How's the seal holding up? I've had an Xtherm long for two years now. I'm only 5'8 but I'm broad shouldered. Not sure I'd go full torso length at first, but definitely want to take it down to my height. Such a great pad, just wish it was for short fat kids! Thanks for the video, I know what I'm doing this weekend!
Thanks for this video! Just wanted to ask- did you use any glue? Or was it just the heat from the iron which created a new seal? Did you iron just from the top side or did you turn it over and use the iron on the bottom side too? How big was the seal area? i.e. 1inch in depth?
Thanks so much!!
Do you use quilt with zipped footbox? If yes, do you find any cold draft coming into your quilt due to uneven backpack surface ?
Would you make a video of cutting up the extra piece so we can see the insulation on the inside?
Can I ask, what setting did you have the iron on?
Any updates? I'm thinking of getting a long mummy or the reg wide max and doing this. I'm short but there's no room for my arms to stay on the regular.
I wish someone would shorten a long mummy. I wonder if there are any differences needed in approach.
Anyhow, I hope You're doing ok and that your seams are still holding!
Holly shi...
Do you know if you can do this with an Uberlite?
I'm asking out of curiosity. Why shorten the pad? For weight purposes? To cut down on space went traveling?
quotidianlight Thanks for he response! I'm glad you were successful with cutting and resealing. I'd be so nervous since that mat is not cheap!
Torso length pads are quite common in the backpacking community. Thermarest offers the neoair xlite in torso length but is has a smaller r-value and its much more narrow than this wonderful rectangular pad.
yeah but the problem with the torso length ones are they are too narrow and it keeps sliding out from under me when I turn..............need a wide/short mat
Has there been any issue with the seal since this was done?
how many trail nights have you used this mat now since you shortened it ?
